I bought them to replace shimano spd after they failed me on a very rainy and muddy race. I could not clip in. at the time of this review i have had them for 6 years. the metal rails have clear worn marks through years of abuse and a piece of the carbon platform is broken but they still work fine. I had to replace the cleats and i think they too expensive. Time ATAC work great in mud. I think the Egg beaters are a better design and are lighter. I needed a new set of Time ATAC pedals and saw these pedals on special so bought a set. I'm a Time ATAC convert ever since I borrowed a friend's set when my old pedals broke, and have used a set of Aliums since.
The carbons are very light, but they're also much more fragile. Having now done 5 years and 25,000km on the Aliums with no problems at all aside from a lost dust-cap, the Carbons were a major disappointment.
The back spring on my left pedal broke on both sides after just a year's use (even though using it with a broken spring doesn't seem to hurt its performance at all.
The right pedal unscrews itself on a regular basis and sometimes the only way you'd notice is when you pull up on air on an upstroke to find a pedal securely attached to your cleat but not to the spindle. Eventually the carbon part broke apart on one of these occasions and that was it. I can't justify paying such a high premium over the Time Alium and having an inferior, more unreliable product.
Carbon version of the Time ATAC is installed using 6mm allen key, and this means it's almost impossible to remove at the best of times, simply don't get much leverage on a 6mm allen key. Another mark against the carbon.
The moral of the story seems to be: Lighter is never better. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I'd always ridden with platforms and toe clips but decided to switch to clipless when I got my Cinder Cone. I bought the ATAC Carbons after reading the many positive reviews on this site and I haven't been disappointed. The ATACs have made the transition to clipless quite easy. I've fallen a few times but that's just part of the learning curve. I've used the Carbons in heavy mud and did not have any problems clipping in. Unclipping is quite easy as well and the amount of lateral float allows for a comfortable degree of foot movement. They are well made and built to take a beating. I ride all year, ice and snow in the winter and 60 to 100 miles per week in the summer. they have lasted me 4 1/2 yrs and have only been rebuilt a handfull of times. Only now, just short of the 5 year mark they are they beginning to die. I ride hard and alot and have never had the reason to use any other pedals since i began to use these. The bearings so far as i can tell are non replacible...maybe a custom size...and mine are beginning to ride rough, but i still have no real play and am way too stubborn to replace them anytime soon, so i guess we'll see how much longer they last Im going for 7 yrs, without new bearings if i can find new ones ill never replace them...Oh yea sometimes the plastic guards, the ones that are yellow or blue or green , sometimes they crack, but it doesnt really effect the engagement too much, atleast for me. | | Value Rating:Overall Rating: |

With that said, I did not like the stiff engagment and disengagment. On the wet rooty trails in the South you are at high risk for a quick ejection and with these pedals you might eject your ankle out of its socket. I have been very happy with my Shimano 959.
If you are a novice,have knee or ankle problems, or are a fan of old school clip pedals(like me) these pedals are not for you.

Basicly out here in Long Island we get some of the nastiest mud around and we all use some form of Time pedals if your looking for the best mud shedding pedal with a good price tag get time. If you can afford a set of triple ti Eggbeaters get em and send me blank check while your at it. Thinking of going cheapo just tell me how stupid you feel falling over in mud getting cover with it and then having to remove your shoe to get off the bike. It happened to me and I felt like a Dumb A$$. As for all the people who have had release problems there are a set of directions for mounting the cleats try reading them. At first, I just thought that I would always have problems with clipless, and I got very discouraged. Then I caved in and bought new pedals. After alot of research, I chose the Times and I am so glad that I did!!! These things are a cinch to work. And with my new found confidence, I am trying more and more technical terrain without fear of getting stuck in the pedals at the last second when I need to be getting out of them. Another awesome thing is that no adjustments mean you spend more time riding the trails then making sure the pedals work right. 5 CHILIS!!!
