from Upstate NY Date Reviewed: April 3, 2000 | | Duration Product Used: | 3 months | | Strengths: | strong, relatively light, SUN RIMS stickers look cool | | Weaknesses: | none, yet | | Similar Products Used: | Crosslinks and 217's w/ various hubs | | Bike Setup: | Azonic DS | | Bottom Line: | Great wheelset overall. I ride them on my DS bike which I do a lot of jumping and city riding on. They haven't even shown signs of a little wobble. They are as straight as the day I bought them. I'd recommend them to anyone that needs strong wheels w/o breaking the bank. I wouldn't recommend them to any weight weenie that doesn't understand the importance of strenght over weight (always!). They're not the lightest wheels in the world but I'd use them for XC based on their strength alone. Value wise I really couldn't tell you, I work at a shop and I get everything cheap. He, he, he, heeee. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from College Station, Texas Date Reviewed: February 28, 1999 | | Bottom Line: | Sun RPM's rule!!! I ride really heavily, and when I race I let it all out on my bike, and these wheels are holding up beautifully. I got them a week ago, and they were perfectly true out of the box. I broke them in at my local trail before this weekend, which I had a collegiate race and a NORBA race back-to-back. Although both wheels, after each race, were a little out of true, they were easy to true back up. After the wheels get a little more stress in them, they'll hold their true more easily. They're light, but strong enough for my bomber riding style. I'm flat-out rough on my equipment, and I have no complaints about the RPM's. In fact, I'm giving them 5 chilies because they combine great strength, value, and quality into an affordable wheelset. The Ringle hubs are beautiful works out mechanical art, and I love how the rear hub sounds. It's really quick at engaging, and the front hub is stiff as hell. They will roll forever!!!! I'll report back to see if these wheels survive being owned by me over time..... | Overall Rating: |

Got a set of the RPM Lights from my local bike shop were my friend works. I was able to pick them up for about $325. I figure I didn't get the best price but I prefer to by from them rather than mail-order. But anyway I've used them for trials and to my suprise they very strong. I went riding and found they perform well on the trail too. These were my first pair of high end wheels and I think that these babies are excellent. | Overall Rating: |

The ringle rpm wheelset is awesome. They can do it all.Ive ridden some trials, some long technical vermont downhills even a little dirt jumping(dont tell ringle if i have to warreanty them) and some long steep vermont climbs. Besides a little ding in the rear rim and the rear wheel slightly out of true they were flawless. I would suggest these wheels to anyone in the market for high end wheels, if you can swing the 300bean pricetag. | Overall Rating: |

I got the black RPM's (0*XC rim) with black Marwi DB spokes (FYI, DT revos silver spokes means they are '98, Black DB Marwi spokes mean they are the newer '98/'99 Version) and silver alloy nipples (ummm, nipples!) and let me tell you they are as good as they look (NO not the nipples, the wheels), these rims are the strongest XC rims out there, they are just 24 grms heavier than your lightweight rim but is three times as strong, and is a lot cheaper to replace too, let's not say an awful lot more if you have Crapmax's or Craplands...the front wheel is Extremely light by itself, not the lightest but it is well under the 700's and that is with a STRONG, Beefy rim. The rear is a little heavy (970 grms aprox) BUT, check this out, starting in january you can order an alloy Cog carrier that will shave about 80 grms off the rear hub/wheel, making it light enough to compete with all the specialty wheels out there, and if you choose to replace (I wouldn't) the O*XC rims with sub IV (390 grms) or valiants you're going to have one pair of sickly light wheels. The best part of all is that even though this set of hoops go for up to $500 (cbo) and $435 (supergo) for the old '98 version I got mine for the sickly cheap price of $225(axxis-sports, they are $250 now)!!!!How's that? I STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THEM FOR UP TO $350-$400 range, Five flaming piles of shit!!! | Overall Rating: |

I have the R.P.M. wheelset and they've been a great wheelset. I've had them fo about 3-4 months and the rear is still true, the front isn't because of a little mishap, but under normal conditions I'm sure it would be. There were a couple of problems, the axle is a very tight fit for both my rear and front dropouts. Also the cassette was a very tight fit, other than that though these wheels have been awesome. Had a pair of LX's and these roll a hell of a lot faster and are a bit lighter and I've actually been pushing one or two gears more on hills. Overall four chiles because of the problems of installation. | Overall Rating: |

I bought these fairly cheap as an add on to my bike. I initially had problems installing them. I couldn't get them on the frame in the rear, and they were kind of tight up front. I ended up having to sand out my rear dropout to accommadate the wheel. I don't know whether it was the frame's fault (being that it was too small) or the hubs (being that it was too large). B!tched and moaned about it then, but in hindsight, it wasn't that big a deal. These wheels have held up great for me so far, haven't had to true 'em yet (ridden for about two months, 200+ rider). I've bashed 'em against curbs, pinch flatted a couple of times, and ridden off some high drops and they're doing fine. Now that I've said this they'll probably snap on my ride tomorrow morning, but hey, that's life. I'll give em four since I had to break a sweat sanding out my frame. | Overall Rating: |

These rims are pretty amazing (I've got the RPM's w/ 0'XC rims). I'm tipping 200#, and when I first got 'em, the skinny spokes and radial lacing kind of freaked me out. And when I put 'em on the bike, grabbing the tire and pushing back and forth between the stays, I thought they were awfully bendy. Oh well, so's my Ti frame. Like the Ti frame though, they ride beautifully, and are strong as hel(l). It's only been about 3 months, but after lots of rough downhills, air, 1 pinch-flat w/ a small rim-ding (luckily can't feel it in the brakes), and some brutal crashes, they are still perfectly round and true; haven't had to touch them yet. I don't know what's up w/ the quality control issues expressed below, but mine arrived well-tensioned and true (I touched them up just the tiniest bit). No problem putting on an XTR cassette, though it is consistently a be-yotch to remove, despite greasing it every time -- not a big deal though. Hubs seem way-solid; freehub is pretty noisy. The machined brake surface shows no wear yet. Badass looks (mine are all black, including the spokes). I'd recommend 'em to anybody, esp'y since they seem to be available for cheeeep all over the place (seen sets as low as $249). | Overall Rating: |

I have the RPM's-I couldn't find a set of Clydes. I paid $350.00 for these wheels at Bike Wave in Indy. (they were on sale, but they're cheap here anyway) I weigh 250 and haven't had to true them yet (approximately 3 months) Some people have had trouble with the cassette not fitting on the splines. I lubed the cassette body with Finish Line and lightly tapped the cassette on with a small dead blow hammer. No big deal. These wheels rock. Mavic sucks. | Overall Rating: |

Riding the RpM lites for 3 weeks now. 130lb rider, switchback and long rocky 12 mile long downhills in the mountains. Very light, stiff, and are still true. The front is light, the rear is Ok. The rear hub catches a lot due to the thingy only having three things that engage the pawl thing in the clutch-cassette body thing. Anyway, you don't get instant engagement, but you do get a very positive solid feel when jamming on the pedals. While downhilling, the crank gets smacked around and feels clunky because the rear hub body is engaging and disengaging constantly. I never had this happen with my old XT hubs. Beautiful, quality is top notch. the ratchet noise is kinda cool, unless you're trying to sneak up on a squirel.4 because the rear hub is kinda smack happy. | Overall Rating: |

Sun/Ringle RPM Wheelset After the first 2 rides, spokes loosened to where they could be turned by hand. 2 more rides after they were tightened and trued by local wheelbuilder and they were shot beyond repair. Sent back to Sun/Ringle where they were rebuilt with new spokes and rims to original hubs. About 2 months later, they are shot again after yet another truing session by a fine local wheelbuilder. The company's response is that a rider over 175lbs may require the welded version of that rim. I am a 190 lb. rider. I was told that a person from the company will call me back to discuss rebuild options. As good as this sounds, I am still waiting for the phone call 1 1/2 weeks later. I must admit that I am surprised at the poor durability of this wheelset as well as the customer service follow through. | Overall Rating: |

Let me start by saying that this review is for the new Ringle RPM cross-country wheelset. I go to school full-time at Johns Hopkins University ( Chemical engineer major), and work at Mt. Washington Bike Shop. I ordered a pair of the wheels at the interbike show, and final decided to put them on my FAT for the first race of the season. But when I went to slide on my cassette, it didn't fit. So I called up the guys at Ringle (latin for bullshit)and he told me that their tolerances were higher than Shimano, and that 1 in like 5 shimano cassettes would not meet their standards. He suggested that I try a different cassette, so I tried every cassette in the shop; none fit. I call back and they suggest sanding down the edges of the freewheel body, I did; no go. Now I'm pissed and told them I shouldn't have to sand-down anything on a $500 wheelset. I also told them that Shimano cassettes have no problem on other wheelsets, and I've installed a lot of them. They promised to send me a new freewheel body in 3 days in time for my race, it's been a week! Intial review is bad, very bad. | Overall Rating: |

Sun/Ringle deserves a pat on the back. This wheelset is amazing, strong, fairly light and price is reasonable for the quality. If you are a larger rider and are looking for a great wheelset then check out the specs on these babies at www.sunrims.com/ I promise you will not be dissapointed with these in any way. If you are smaller and don't want the extra 1/4 pound then check out the RPM's. ( Poser value is very high as well, You look at them and drool. )
