Never pinch flats, increases the volume of your tire so you can run really low PSI, down to 15. Makes your bike look scary. | | Weaknesses: | Majorly wide, makes your tire square, but its not too bad. | | Similar Products Used: | Lots | | Bike Setup: | 05 kona stab supreme, 888rc, dhx5, etc | | Bottom Line: | I run a doublewide only on my back wheel. $55.00 | | Purchased At: | Beyond Bikes, (price match it from Jenson USA) | | Strengths: | They are only as strong as you make them. They are tough rims, mainly because they are so wide, they can handle a wide tire, a 3.0" tire shouldn't be on anything else but a doublewide or something of this size. The wider the rim, the better the performance of the rim. But it all comes down to who strung it...if you are making a wheel for the first time...dont, you'll screw yourself, they are hard to string, so let a pro do them, and get them checked after 25 miles to double check. other than that, these things are rougg and tough rims! | | Weaknesses: | They are no modo's or deemax's but for the price, they are great. I would recommend a Sun doubletrack or an Intense Ma 30 over the Sun Doublewide, but if you want it fat, this is as big as you can get...I am a trials rider myself, so i use 47mm echo and koxx drilled rims, so i know about flat spots and dicking around on rims...and if you dont know how to ride or land right, you will break these rims, or get flat spots... for the price u can import a koxxdrilled rim...which id recommend if you're a fair weather rider, but real downhillers, stick with a dh rim, the drilled rims get the tub wet and you'll get flats all day if you go dhing in the rain.. | | Similar Products Used: | Intense Mag 30, Doubletrack, sun single track, Modo, Maxxis D531 | | Bike Setup: | My dh bike: 2003 Foes DHS Mono, M frame, black, Sun doubletrack rim with a kenda 2.7 on the rear, sun doublewide and an intense 3.0 on the front with the ti-currnet shox and the new Manitou Dorado DH 180 | | Bottom Line: | If you want fat rims, this is for you, if you want something wide, for 2.5+ tires, id reccomend a Mag 30, but the sun doubletrack is pretty much the same thing for about 20 bucks cheaper... if you want to mix it up, go with a doubleTRACK on the rear for strength, then a doubleWIDE on the front with a bigger tire for good control...little weaker, but like 10mm wider, makes a 3.0 or 2.7 tire look like a square, SO NICE!
But if you dont ride hard and just have alot of money...buy 2 doublewides, and pimp out your bike, it looks cooler... | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

The best way to mount those fatty tires. | | Weaknesses: | None thus far. | | Similar Products Used: | Singletrack, WTB, etc. | | Bike Setup: | GSR Hooligan DH HT | | Bottom Line: | I run this rim up front because I like the extra stablity that a more parallel and stiffer sidewall gives the bike. My Doublewide and 2.65 Kujo tire combination are shaped more like a "U" than a "V" because this rim is so wide. I had this 2.65 tire on a Sun Singletrack rim and it just didn't look or feel right. If you want to run the fatties, ya gotta get the wider rim. Just makes sense. With a DH tube in this front tire and this pinch resistant Doublewide rim, I have not had one flat in the past four months. I ain't easy on my equipment and this rim is lasting thus far. Don't worry about the weight or the rolling mass, you'll get used to it and adapt accordingly. It might even make you a better rider. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$50.00 | | Purchased At: | Lifecycles | | Strengths: | EXTREMELY good side to side strenge. Will stay straight no matter what. Looks WICKED. Makes tires grip 10x better, because it spreads the tread out. | | Weaknesses: | Flat spots VERY easily, even on little things. | | Similar Products Used: | Rhyno Lite, Doubletrack, Singletrack, Alex MT28 | | Bike Setup: | 2003 Norco VPS A-Line, Monster T2, | | Bottom Line: | Very "cool" rim but not necessarily the best. I bought it thinking that since it was the biggest of the Sun rims, it would be the best, not true. Only reason I dont regret buying it was because i got it half price since it was the only white one that the shop had. GREAT feeling rim when first put on the bike, feels solid and strong, Great improvement in the tire grip since the change in width. Under a week of riding, LOTS of flat spots. I didnt even ride it as sketchy or hard as my old Rhynolites that I had on my old bike. I think that the Width helps in keeping them straight but the shallowness of the rim doesnt do alot for the flatting. Overall, Id say go for a DoubleTrack Or a MAG30. You may get a bit of side to side bending but thats fixable unlike flats. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

MC tire levers work well, though. | | Similar Products Used: | Rhyno Lite XL, Mavic | | Bike Setup: | Rotec DH Pro, Stratos MX6, Kooka cranks, 8" rotors, flat pedals.... | | Bottom Line: | So much of a rims strength can be traced back to the overall quality of the wheel build. If you have the wheel purpose built by a competent wheel builder, these rims can be VERY strong as will be the wheel. I ride Baffin Island were there are no trails, just massive amounts of rock and tundra with huge drops and long technical dh runs. The bottom line is that this rim as any rim needs to be built right. So make sure you have a great wheel builder at your local shop or find one. By the way, I've rode this rim for 1 year now with no truing. Besides, my local mechanic is 1500 miles away. in Ottawa. $175.00 | | Purchased At: | with wheel and discs from trader | | Strengths: | Looks very tough. Has been abused and is still in perfect true. VERY LIGHT. I have been using xc wheels that go out of true over 1.5 foot drops. These weigh a lot more, but what do you expect cumparing an xc wheel. I still think these are really easy to throw around and climb with. | | Weaknesses: | there are little it bitty bulges cuming out of the sides. can't really describe, but efect the performance in NO way, yet.
little expensive too. I find this rim online in the 30-45$ range. | | Similar Products Used: | nuthin this tough | | Bike Setup: | schwinn rocket, ew, gettin sumthin new | | Bottom Line: | oh cmon guys, they are very light. i have mine set up with a julu hub and 14/15 guage spokes, plus the intense 50 comp 2.35 with all the tread is on it. it weighs exactly 6lbs... remeasures... now 9.5 lbs.... hmmm, i think my scale is broken... i will have to get back to you on this weight thing. less just say it is pretty lite. it prolly only weighs 1-1.5 lbs more than a xc wheel, than again i have a 2.35 tire compared to a 2.1 tire. also i have much heavier tubes. If you are getting a freeride/ dh rim, this is pretty tough. I will give you an update in about 3-6 months after i get a good measure on the weight and after i have more run time on it. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I on the other hand suffered a lot- concussion, broken wrist, broken jaw(where was my fillface helmet?), both shoulders dislocated. when i was lying there on the ground bleeding i was already thinking about what frame and what components i should buy next(i didn't expect these to survive) but when i saw my bike i was really surprised, i checked the front wheel and it had only about 1/4 of an inch out of true, and i think that's pretty good considering the fact that i bent the tubes on my fork. Bottom Line is.. if i ever break these i'll buy them again | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Stiffness again. Looks burly. | | Weaknesses: | Well, Doublewides are not heat treated, and while being laterally stiff, they tend to dent up and egg out REALLY easily. Even running correct air pressure. | | Similar Products Used: | Not yet, but soon will try Arrow or Intense rim. | | Bike Setup: | TMX. Risse Champ 8" with upgraded upper tubes (basically a shorter Bigfoot), Doublewides, 3" tires, Hayes brakes, Shinburgers,Profiles, etc. | | Bottom Line: | Okay-I've had my rear 24" Doublewide for about four months. It is a pretty bad sight. Sure they stay true, but they egg out real easy, and I can plainly see plenty of spots where they are dented in. My front 26" Doublewide is cracked at the weld. Hopefully they warranty. And I never run real low pressure with 3 inchers. Never had a single problem with them. | | Weaknesses: | Heavy? I think that one could expect that before going ahead and buying them. I can't consider that a weakness. 36 spoke, 24" wheels are strong as Hell (especially so on the RIGHT hubs...what type of hubs are you folks running?) | | Similar Products Used: | None......there are NO 24" wheelsets like this out there. | | Bike Setup: | Shockwave/24" doublewides/AVALANCHE rear shock/ Monster T'/...... | | Bottom Line: | Buy the 36 spoke version no matter what size, but run 24's and I doubt that you will EVER have a "catastrophic" problem with them (as one reviewer wrote below)..it all sounds like the typical "jump on the band wagon bashing" that starts on this site whenever one person begins trashing an item.
I gap staircases in urban settings, drop boulders and chutes in the woods, and have run DH courses at 4 different mountains with these wheels and have never had any problems. It's the one part of my bike that never seems to need any attention. If you want strong burly looking wheels, then buy the doublewides. Don't listen to the negativity. If you are a gram shaver with low cut socks go bend some rhino lites. Just re-learn how to throw your bike around and you will get used to these rims in a week. As far as I'm concerned the best rims I have yet to destroy is a Avro. I bought A set in Italy when visiting. I blew my Ditch Witch sun rims out on a stair drop. The local bike shops had nothing for me exept this massive yellow rim that looked like pure steel. I had no choice, I bought it thinking it was crap. 8 months and 2 frames later I still have them. They look like crap with all the flat spots and chipped yellow paint but have never even been tweaked out yet. I only ride Doubles since I can't find a canadian dealer for Avro yet, but doubles can hold there own if they are built up right. Just run them with a fat tire 2.5 and up, if your flatting them out to much your air pressure and tire size need to be increased. If any one knows of Avro rims in N America email me. Cheers! www.in_format.it/greg/ is my cheesy italian made web page with shots of me beating my rims up. Theres a gallery with pictures mostly from Italy but click on the link button then onto the symbol to see a few pictures of some stairs that were also done in Cranked 2 (the Italy scenes at saint luca church) I was hucking to flat on my hardtail, in the vid they are just rolling into them with the fullies. | | Weaknesses: | NONE they are the best | | Similar Products Used: | mammoth(weak) hed. mavic deemax etc... | | Bike Setup: | trek pro issue DH boxxer hayes azonic | | Bottom Line: | these rims are indestructable. the people that say they are too heavy should just grow some BALLS and train harder. the person that traded these out for mammoths is not the brightest star in the sky. these rims take a lickin and keep on tickin. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from Montreal Date Reviewed: November 23, 2000 | | Favorite Trail: | WC at Bromont (fun) | | Duration Product Used: | 6 months | | Strengths: | Really wide so you get an awesome profile with 2.6-3.0 tires. Strong as hell although I managed to bend my front rim during a crash...I was really surprised. I guess it was a really hard crash. | | Weaknesses: | A little on the heavy side. But that kind of width and strength, they have to be heavy. But is does suck when you have to sorta pedal a bit on a flat or slight-uphill section of a trail. | | Similar Products Used: | -Sun Mammoth (awesome, just need to be a little wider) -Mavic 321cd (awesome too! Only have good things to say about them) -Mavic 521cd (awesome, strong. A little narrow) | | Bike Setup: | Long story.... | | Bottom Line: | Amazing rims. I don't race so I don't know if they'd slow you down or not. I've been running a 24" rear and 26" front and I never bent them at all except for a big crash I took. Unfortunatly, there are a couple flat spots and uphill spots on the DH trails I do at a local Mt. and it's a b!tch to pedal these wheels...especially with Gazz tires. But, the weight is an acceptable trade-off for strength and width. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

LOOK FRUITCAKE'S, IT'S A DOWNHILL RIM. CAN YOU SAY DOWNHILL KIDDIES? WATCH MR. ROGERS AND LEARN. IF YOUR NOT TOO BRIGHT, HERE'S THE FORMULA: STRENGTH = WEIGHT. STRENGTH + ABILITY = SPEED. GOT IT! YOU WANT TO DOWNHILL WITH A LITE, WHIMPY LITTLE 28mm RIM, THEN DO SO, BUT SAVE SOME TIME EVERY DAY WHILE YOUR IN THE HOSPITAL TO TRUE IT. THESE RIMS WORK. THERE WIDE, SOLID, AND WAY BETTER AND CHEAPER THAN MAVIC 321'S. TRUE, THE TIRE IS A LITTLE HARD TO GET ON AND OFF ON ALL SUN RIMS, BUT IF YOU GOT A FLAT DOWNHILLING, WOULDN'T YOU WANT THE TIRE TO STAY ON? YOU DON'T NEED TO THINK ABOUT THAT ONE. SIMPLY PUT THEY'RE AWESOME!! TRY EM'. YOU WON'T BE LEFT HANGIN' | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

(not if there is any pedaling envolved) They are so wide that the rims ding easily. I am trading my for some new lighter D321. They my not be as strong, but I'll be able to pedal with out looseing a lung or two. The weight diffrerence is about .5 lbs per rim. That's a lot of extra weight to turn. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from USA Date Reviewed: December 4, 1998 | | Bottom Line: | Anybody else ridden their NEW DoubleWide's by Sun Rims. Holy S*@T. Now that's what we're talking about. I got these as replacements to my Phat Alberts...we all remember those hunks. What an improvement, they still are wide about 46mm, a little heavier only about 100 grams, and they still have the rounded bead thing to stop pinch flats. I saw a cross section in a drawing one of the bike shops had. They should have just waited.Anyways I built them up on Ringle's new ABBAH DH disc hubs, which I must recommend also. And I have beat them into curbs and logs on purpose to see if they hold up longer than the Phat ALberts. Yup. These might be the strongest rims available anywhere, next to those big motocross Excel rims. They're only $5 more than my Phat's were and they come in White, Black, and Kawasaki Green. Check out the decal too. You'll laugh, get it - double wide (like the trailers).I also heard Shaums March tested the first set in Vermont... He road 1/2 the course on a flat tire and when they put the rim in the truing stand it was fine. Wish my Alberts did that. | Overall Rating: |
