Favorite Trail:Big Bend Ranch State Park
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $40.00
Purchased At:Unreal Cycles
Strengths:Hands-down the strongest rim I have ever ridden.
Weaknesses:A little heavy, but worth the weight because they're indestructible. Destroy rim brake pads quickly.
Similar Products Used:Sun BFR (BMX version of same rim), DT Swiss, Atomlab, Araya, WTB, bontrager
Bike Setup:Wheel is Sun Mammoth front/rear, DT Swiss spokes, Hadley Ti SS 10 mm thru-axle (converted to run 5 cogs) rear and 20mm thru-axle front; Current bike: Rocky Mountain Vertex w/ Manitou Minute MRD Absolute, XT drive train, WTB Wolverine Race tires... Previous bikes used w/ these rims: Rocky Mountain RM7FR, Evil Imperial, Gack Trail Mod
Bottom Line:I have ridden these wheels on nearly every bike I've had that needed to be able to take abuse. Yes, I even ride them on my cross-country rig because I would rather feel absolutely confident on the trail that my wheel will never fail than save a little bit of rolling weight.

I weigh 150 and have taken 20-30 ft drops on these and they've not only survived, they've excelled--didn't even need to be trued afterward.

I'd give them 10 chilis each for value and overall if I could.

(I have seen one break, though: I screwed up big time on a massive drop. In that fall, I broke my Marzocchi Monster T fork, ovaled my head tube, snapped the rear linkage on my Rocky Mountain RM7FR. ANY wheel would have broken under that circumstance.)

One less-than-positive note, though. I rode them on a DJ bike with Magura hydraulic rim brakes for a while, and while the brakes worked well, that anodized finish tore through the incredibly expensive pads like a rotweiller chewing on a newspaper. Would definitely recommend disc brakes w/ these, or at least rim brakes with cheap replacement pads.

Price Paid: $15.00
Purchased At:nashbar
Strengths:Cheap, Super strong, good looking.
Weaknesses:welded seam would make them a bit better for rim brakes, but they are pretty smooth braking compared to most pinned seam rims i have used. It looks like sun has discontinued them :(.
Similar Products Used:Rhynolites, Atomlab DHR
Bike Setup:I use these on my BMX street/jumper, 26" Dirt Jump/Urban bike, Rear trials rim. Used with and without discs
Bottom Line:The previous reviewer carlos n. was INCORRECT in his post that these are only for disc brakes. I don't no why his LBS told him that. You can check with Sun-Ringle directly on this. These were on the market before discs bacame the popular brake of choice, and the BMX BFR (same rim without the plastic center strip) were disigned for use with rim brakes. I only wish they made the 26" version in chrome like the BMX ones for good braking (at least for urban/dry conditions chrome sucks for wet riding), But the BMX ones also come in silver and black (both anodized) also so those finishes are fine and work pretty well with rim brakes too. Just make sure you are using a soft compound brake pad. Harder pads are for machined or cermaic rims and won't work as well. Machined wall rims do brake better, but The concave sidewall design of the BFR/Mammoth prevents these from having machined sidewalls, but this design adds to the strength. It's a bit of a trade off, but to be honest, with the correct pads (eagle claw, or cool stop red pads work the best). I have had no problems stopping with these. If you want to carefully grind the sidewalls (just to remove the annodizing) they should brake a bit better. But be careful not to grind too deep and weaken the rim. Get these while you can. It looks like Sun-Ringle has discontinued these for 2008. There are alot of shops and mail orders with good stock of these, probably will be on close-out soon (nashbar already has some 26 hole for $15 each). Disc brakes have taken over, and all of Sun-Ringle's new 2008 DH/FR rims are disc specific now. I hope they keep the Rhynolite XL (my favorite all-around XC/City/SS rim) though.

Bottom Line:these are great rims for dh. yers there a little heavy- but for how strong they are that doesn't matter. they are very cheap and reliable. i have not had any problems yet- and i am pretty heavy and i am still learning so i land some drops VERY badly, and theyre still holdin up!!.

Bottom Line:Swapped out the KHS stock rims for the Mammoths pre-mounted with Shimano DeOre hubs, DT spokes & Kenda Nevegal 2.3 tires. Had to replace the stock Tektro LP brakes with longer arm RPB's because the cable wouldn't clear the knobs - this is a big rim. So far, running fine with stock rim brake pads. They seem pretty light to me with the Nevegals and I probably won't ever be able to test out their strength since my old knees won't allow me to re-live my childhood & really beat these up. Got them for reliability, no-hassle, minimal truing & cheap price reasons. Recommened by an old-newbee.

Strengths:Strength
Weaknesses:Weight
Similar Products Used:Rhyno Lites
Bike Setup:Jamis Dakar w/ 5", Rockshox Tora 110 mm, Avid BB7, Shimano, Fats
Bottom Line:I just wanted to note to everyone using Rim Brakes on these rims. The reason you're having to grind them before mounting your brakes, and your pads are chewing through, and the black rim has an anodized surface, is because these rims are Disc Specific. I know they don't look it, but there wide, flared design is strictly for added strength. I know this, because I've asked around. Plus, I bought them at the local bike shop (where I've been going to for years). They made clear, to me, not to use rim brakes on them. They're Disc Specific!

When you buy parts for your bike, don't just assume... find out for sure. Remember, that bike is the only thing keeping your ass alive, on your ride.

very strong rim, used on rear wheel on a hardtail and still very true.

Weaknesses:a bit heavy.
the spokes often come loose, but im not sure if thats the rims fault. i probably just need threadlock.

Bottom Line:i would definitly recomend this rim for people who want a good strong rim and are on a budget.
once for some reason i lost control of the bike while manualing very fast and the rear wheel smacked in to a 8 inch tall cement block with a square edge at about 50 km/h. the fact that the rim dosent have even a slight flat spot truly shows the strength and quality of the rim
buy this and you will not be dissapointed

ive had this rim as my rear rim for about a year now. was strong as hell. i once cased it off a jump onto a sharp concrete block, right on the corner and the walls didnt even fold - just a tiny dent (and im heavy - 95kgs). plus the spokes and nipples were all rotten - i was snapping one of them at least weekly.
yesterday however, off a 6ft north shore drop my rims sadly died. 5 spokes snapped and the thing is bent like a snake now. however i am still very impressed with this rim. it took a hell of a beating over one year, with minimal maintenance - i personally trued it quickly two or three times over the year (not including inserting new spokes or nipples :)). id buy one again but im gonna try something a bit lighter to see how it goes.
definitely recommended.

Purchased At:Varsity Bikes (LBS)
Strengths:Likely the strongest rim for rim brake users, inexpensive
Weaknesses:not disc specific, maybe heavier than they need to be
Similar Products Used:none
Bike Setup:5 inch travel urban free ride
Bottom Line:These days almost anybody running such a heavy rim has disc brakes, but my bike won't run them on the rear- its that old. Magura HS33's grab HARD on this rim and never seem to fade, so who needs discs?
Its a good design, but old and thus maybe not as good as some newer disc specific models. The "plastic thing" keeps mud and dirt from accumulating inside the H shaped cross section.
They need to be laced with HIGH tension, because they are really stiff. Mine wouldn't stay tru until I maxed out the tension- my spoke wrench was bending, and the gauge indicates 130+ kgs on the drive side.

Bottom line? If you need a burly rim and are on a tight budget or need rim brakes, they are the way to go. Just make sure the builder knows thier job- half tight spokes won't cut it with these rims.

although the mammoth has a wierd nylon black stuff that really serves no purpose but to mask the ugly welds and whatnot.

But then again I'm 280 pounds riding on a hardtail. But now after the break in period I can't knock them out of true. Yes for everbody reading most wheels have a break in peroid. So don't be pissed if it comes out of true a few times. It will settle down and then almost never get bent. Great rim I love it but they are WAy overkill for a front rim on a XC/trail bike. Try a sun rhino lite. Also dose anyone know if thease will work well with vee breaks? If so email me. Later,

Bottom Line:I'm massive, my bike is massive, the earth is even more massive and despite our best attempts (100Kg from 2m 20deg of axel & yes it hurt) we haven’t buckled them (irreparably) yet. But my brakes are about to chew through. I found the Mavics my rim breaks eat first (and faster!) were just as strong, marginally lighter to ride, but were more expensive and harder to get the tyres off. Bottom Line:I use the rims for XC, not downhill. I have had bad experience with Mavic, in particular with the X517. I don't care about weight, I wan't the best. I've ridden a few hundred miles with them and no problems so far. On the front I use 2mm DT spokes and on the rear butted spokes (2,0/1,8/2,0). I built those wheels myself (the first ones) and they're still in true.
As mentioned, I have rather thin spokes on the rear. I bought the Rohloff Speedhub and some DT Alpine III spokes (2,3 mm). The Alpine spokes didn't fit very well, therefore I contacted the Rohloff Company. They recommended using butted spokes because they haven't heard of any problems using butted spokes. Today I haven't had any problems at all.

Strengths:VALUE is the name of the game with these rims. For the price, nothing comes close for a good strong all-around rim that will hold up to jumping, drops, street, and even XC if you're a pro-class dirt-roadie. The all-black version looks tough.
Weaknesses:Posers won't think you're cool.
Weight, I guess. But if it was lighter, it would be weaker, so I take that back.
Similar Products Used:WTB Laser Disc, Rhyno Lite, Bontrager Mustang, and more over the years.
Bike Setup:GT Ruckus, DJ1, Hayes, Profile
Bottom Line:I have been through a couple of these rims in the last two years, but ANY rims would have given in to what I did. Big, fast x-up to flat collapsed the front (I landed nose down, hard)and a big no-footer to crooked landing warped the rear beyond repair. In between these events, the rims hold up to a lot of abuse and don't even usually need truing. I also run these on my bmx cruiser, and after two seasons of racing, I flat-spotted one rim by casing a double real hard, but otherwise they have held up great. I would much rather spend ~$40 for a new rim when I screw up, than paying $80-$100 for "Brand X" stuff that will not hold up any better. If you jump or ride street, GET THESE RIMS! If you are in it for *looking* like a pro, save up and buy something overpriced and pretty!

They are perfectly straight, no flat spots, nothing. Recommend these to anyone that doesn't care about weight, like me. Bottom Line:Nice and strong. I got this rim after I broke my Velocity, and it is just so much better. Really deep section is good for flat spot resistance and wide enough foot print to run low enough pressure to get grip. The alloy seems to be really hard as well and I like that. Strengths:This is simply the best wheel ever. Not only does the wide look make your bike look like real a machine instead of those sissy "race" wheels, they are very strong... so far.... I have LX hubs on them and do lots of jumping on concrete, riding down railroad tracks, poping the rear wheel up on a curb at 20MPH, etc and lots of foolish crap for a 40 year old. I broke, bent destroyed most other wheels. I used to ride competitive BMX in the 70s, then real MX in the 80s on 250's.. I am not a pro mountain bike rider by any means and do it for excercise and a little fun..... These things are like "tuff" wheels to old mongoose's. It is simply the best part I have put on my bike yet and they only thing that lives up to its name.

Bottom Line:The strongest non-DH specific rim ever. I weighed 260 when I bought it, and I did several 3+ foot drops onto flat pavement just to test. Then I did some four foot drops. And then a five foot drop by accident. I ride an old Cannondale Super-V 700 with about 1.5" of travel. Think hardtail. Now think five feet onto flat pavement. Now think of a perfectly true rim. And after I bought the Mammoth, I have not had a single pinchflat! And all I do is urban assault (pretty much)! The rim is so wide that i can use square curbs as a launch ramp! I've gone through two front wheels, but have never even needed the rear Mammoth trued once. Bang.

Bike Setup:2001 Cove Stiffee, Z3 QR20, Sun Rhyno on the front, Big Fat Mammoth on the back, Kenda Kanetics 2.35 tires on both.
Bottom Line:I'm a big guy (6'6", 280lbs), and I ride HARD! After crushing countless different rear rims (usualy destroyed in a couple rides) on my ol' trek hardtail (including the mity Rhyno Lt.) I went against all the LBS's suggestions and went for the biggest, fattest, beefyest wheel I could find...Mamoth, big fat streight gadge spokes, LX hub...and it was wonderful (the hub is the only weekenss, crushed the bearings in it once)...in 2 years I've only had to true it twice, a very small adjustments. When I got my new Cove Stiffee hardtail, the first thing I did is take the Mammoth from my old bike and stick it on there, and it is still as round as the day I bought it!!!

I suggest it to any 250+ pounder that does serious riding off road...when you weigh 100lbs more than the average lankey racer already...a pound or two extra on your bike is not that big of a deal. It is truley worth the weight, and the price can't be beat!

(The first because the course was finished about three days ago) My first atempt wasn't great. I cased the landing very hard. Normally with my Sun Ditch Witch rims over half the spokes would loosen enough to the point that you can tighten them with your fingures, but not with my mamoths. They stayed perfactly true and did not flat spot. My back hurts a little though... So if you dont ride these rims and you want some thing strong then get up off yo butt, and buy a set.

Strengths:Strong as all hell, and VERY stiff and DEFINATELY worth the money. It is totally bombproof for me and I do 5 foot drop offs and lots of stair jumping and freeride. These rims are totally AWESOME for the money and I'm sure that I'll keep buying these rims for my bike till the day I die!!! The beat Mavic in the competition in the long run. Get these, they are cheaper than the Mavic 521's or the D321's. These rims are also lighter than the 321's. Huge braking surface so it's easier to tune yourself on the go instead of a tight brake pad surface area like Mavic.
Weaknesses:None, unless you're a weight weenie. The weight of this makes it worth it. If you get the full black anodized ones, be in for a treat (the actual braking surface is anodized and will howl like mad everytime you brake until you wear it in, which is about 3 days of full on riding). Otherwise - there are NO weaknesses in this product.
Similar Products Used:Mavic D521 (forget them), Mavic x517 (wreaked them after buying them from the bike shop on the way home - ditch these), Sun Rhyno Lite (kick ass), Rigida, and a heap of other taco shells.

Bottom Line:Get these rims and you never have to worry about buckling them. I've ridden them hard since I have purchased them and I do not for one second think I will buckle these, since they are INDESTRUCTABLE rims as many people have already mentioned in other reviews of this product. FORGET Mavic, which burns a huge hole in your pocket for something that is a heap of junk. Get the big mutha fuking mammoth's.

I went almost a year without truing it, but I broke a spoke a couple months back and had to replace the spoke and re-true. My only complaint would be the extra weight. These are heavy rims and the extra weight is noticable (for me at least). I should have done both wheels last year, but I decided to wait until my rear rim broke first. The angle where the sidewall meets the surface where the spoked screw in... it's about 90 degrees. Why is this construction more popular? Screw that lame-ass convex bullsh!t. The Mammoth might be overdoing it a little for my riding style, but after doing a flying endo because of the taco incident, I did not want to take any chances. This is a heavy rim, and having it only on the front, I notice it pretty well. If you like to go bashing around and you don't need anything light for racing XC then this is a great rim that can take more abuse than a person can give.

Weaknesses:None, the weight isn't as huge as everyone claims, fit some slightly lighter tyres, co the rim don't need any rubber pretection, its too strong to bend, ignore any one else's comments, these are the best and at $30, if you do ever bend it its cheeper than a phatso or simalar to replace(but you never will)

The bottom line , don't by it,you'll bend it on streetcurb like or some were else, just like what happened to everyone else that I know had this rim.I wouldn't give it a rating of zero if I had to, and some one's gonna have to pay ME to race on another

Weaknesses:i have used three of these rims in the last year, everybody told me the first one was defective after i split it, the second one i got a warranty on but split it also and the third one came on my last bike and once again split at the seam. the other trouble taht i have had is these rims have way too much flex. I don't mind a little bit but when i can move it back and forth two inches in bach and not have the front move at all there should be some problem with that. and even the small things, the layer of plastic on the inside of the rim lets dird inside the rim and it makes one really annoying noise.

LX hubs totally suck

Bottom Line:I'll be honest, I love these rims, and I don't think I would ride anything else on the rear. But I have put them out of true, they are off dish, and they have a flat spot in them. Although I truly do abuse them. My rear wheel is off dish so that the tire rubs the frame a little. Now this might be because of the wheelbuilder in doing it wrong. Within a month or two they got a little out of true so I decided to true it and to tighten all the spokes to make it harder. So I did and it ran fine for months, then I took few big drops and several wrong landings and they went out of true again. In trying to re-true then I stripped half the nipples, so it's hopeless now. ON THE OTHER HAND I have taken dozens of drops up to five feet tall landing on pavement with my hardtail on these wheels. I love to bunny hop and do a 90* turn and land sideways, this has tacoed three of my wheels and my brothers wheel too, but the mammoth still lives to tell the story. LX hubs suck!! freewheel died a month ago and I snapped the front axle last week, not knowing this until I took the wheel off and the axle fell apart! Front wheel works like a wonder, but I never seem to use it anyways since I love to catwalk while racing traffic through town. Mammoths rule!!!

I haven't bent this beast yet, my brakes still work fine on it so er, I guess it makes this a great rim, yeah?
Weaknesses:Sidewall is tooooo tall. This is a bugger for changing tires/mending flats.
This rim is also WAY heavy!

Bottom Line:This is one HOT rim.
If you are a person to enjure a little suffering to change a puncture if ever one was to occur (I suggest buying a 15 quid Panaracer downhill tube), then I suggest that you BUY ONE OF THESE BABY'S.

However, I don't suggest these to XC riders - too heavy. Also, to downhill riders, they're not heavy enough! These rims are for the average person that likes to jump around, and ride about places etc. They take alot of pain!

The rear rim is just starting to go out of true now for the first time (but they wont be hard to true) and they have suffered some huge hits espically on gutters. I belive they will last at least another year or 2.

But it true that a wheel is only as good as the person who made it and mine were made by the same person who made Cadel Even's wheels when he was with Diamond Back.

Anyone after a set of rims that will last for ever should have these.

One of the other problems was that with my weight and even slight abuse would through my rims out of true, that is until I bought the Sun Mammoth Rims with XT hubs and heavy downhill spokes. No more problems with out of true rims or tacoing and two years going strong. Strengths:
bombproof, cheap
Weaknesses:
not too light
Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:
c-dale CAAD 2, manitou fs-ti stroker, magura raceline brakes
Bottom Line:these rims are awesome! In the downhill world ordinary rims won't last a month. I weigh 220 1bs, and i've had them a little over year. Smack them against logs, rocks, steps, curbs, or any other hard object at 50 mph, and they will still be intact. They are also cheap, 35.00.
