from west mass. Date Reviewed: November 2, 2003 | | Duration Product Used: | 6 months | | Strengths: | It held up really well for about the first 5.5 months, has a good wide platform gives tires a nice wide footprint, tight bead so tires don't roll, looks good | | Weaknesses: | I split the rim at the seam. I was at Mt. Snow, and I developed a slow leak in my back tube. By the time I was done with my run, I probably only had about 8 or 9 PSI in my 2.5" michelin tire. The seam had split, and where the seam had been, one side of the rim had shifted down, so the rim was no longer round. I got one more day of use out of the rim, but when I tore down the wheel, I found that the sleeve inside the rim had failed, as had the weld. I'm only 160lbs and I'm smoother than most, a skill I developed after a year of racing sport DH on a hardtail, and I'm pretty disappointed that the rim split on me. | | Similar Products Used: | Arrow, d321, Atomlab, Hed, 521, Tioga DH, Rhynolite | | Bike Setup: | Marin Team DH, Monster T, Northshores, Evil SRS, Mag 30s, Hayes etc. | | Bottom Line: | It was good while it lasted, and the fact that I was able to ride it for probably 8 or 9 more runs after splitting it is good, but I wouldn't buy the rim again. And for all the disbelievers who may read this, the wheel was built up by a very competant mechanic who has built hundreds of wheels, the wheel had been regularly maintained, and I had proper, evenly distributed spoke tension. I also had a smooth run, and I did hit a few rocks on the way down, but nothing out of the ordinary. My tire wasn't even flat by the time I was done. I think I'm going to get some d321s, and if those crap out on me, then I'll get some Arrow DHXes. I probably got 60 or 70 runs out of them, which I can't complain about, but I got 2 years out of a pair of arrow DHXes that were on my hardtail, and the rims are now being used by other people and are still straight. Alot of people have good experiences with the Mag30s, but I wouldn't buy them again, nor would I reccomend them.
Bottom Line: They were nice while they lasted, wouldn't buy them again. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$100.00 | | Strengths: | Unbelievably reliable. I never would have imagined that a rim could last this long. | | Weaknesses: | Too strong for us mere mortals? Maybe they could make a light weight version, something like the Mavic 521 to the 321. A singletrack made slightly wider, welded, and with the superior magnesium construction would be awesome. | | Similar Products Used: | Atomlab Trail Pimp, Alex DX32, Mavic 321, 521, WTB Laserdisc, Arrow DH (the same rim?). (Great rims all BTW). | | Bottom Line: | When I first built up my bike, I chose a 32 spoke 321 front rim for it's light weight and Mavics good rep, and a heavier 32 spoke Sun Mag 30 rear for the rims reputation for reliability. Very high quality builds on both wheels, from the same wheel builder. After 6 months of consistent very abusive DH riding on rocky courses the 321, understandably, developed 2 cracks and a huge unfixable faltspot. The Mag on the rear however, never not once ever having been trued, looked NEW. Absolutely perfect in every dimension. Not one tiny wobble. Besides the 321 front, I have gone through a RhinoLite, a DX-32, and a 521. But, it's been 2 years now and I AM STILL RUNNING THE SAME REAR WHEEL. The hub is totally shot, but The rim is still absolutely perfect. I imagine this has got to be the strongest rim for its weight on the market, SUPER reliable.
PS, I'm a DH racer, I'm interested in the strongest and the lightest. If you just want the strongest, period, look at Arrow DH's or Alex's anvil weight series of rims.

very big. they're about 2.5 times as wide as mavic 238s, or 2 times as wide as sun cr18s. and times as tall.
i have sun double tracks, identical to the mag 30s, except mine are sleeved, not welded, and black, not grey.
black is sicker. on my ride anyway.... | | Weaknesses: | most tires are almost impossible to mount, so pick some that you want to use for a while, or order lotsa tire levers through a cheap wholesaler..... haha
bead will be so tight, who needs the weld.... the tightness of the bead alone could hold these things together if the sleeve ever fails, which from my experience so far... will never happen. | | Similar Products Used: | sun cr18, mavic 221s, 238, 321, 521s, alex mx 22s | | Bike Setup: | absolutey pimped 2003 sasquatch....

stongest rims i've ever used, strongest rims my buddies have ever used (they all run mags or doubletracks) probably the best dh rims ever....
i'm a mechanic and i laced em up 3 cross w/DT Champion Black spokes to XT disk hubs. these rims will definitely outlast the sh*tty rear xt hub (crappy freehub) and probably my frame and fork as well
and yes i do VERY crazy sh*t.

from Vancouver Date Reviewed: April 7, 2003 | | Duration Product Used: | 1 Year | | Strengths: | Super strong, wide and tall. | | Weaknesses: | REALLY hard to mount some tires (michelins, gazzie's) | | Similar Products Used: | mobsters, tiogas | | Bike Setup: | '01 stinky, super T | | Bottom Line: | Unless you really case an edge these rims will outlast your frame. Super stiff and the tall profile keeps them from flat spotting. Get them if you don't care about the weight, although lighter than double wides. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$65.00 | | Purchased At: | jensonUSA | | Strengths: | Strong as the best DH rims you can get... never got a pinch flat from them even running walmart tubes | | Weaknesses: | ZIP, Zero, none, 0 | | Similar Products Used: | mavic X221 they were cross country but I loved them | | Bike Setup: | Azonic DS-1, DJIII | | Bottom Line: | Strongest things I have ever owned. Even with loose spokes they won't bend on steps, I've broke 2 frames without even bending the rim 1/8 inch. They even climb pretty good. They're not that heavy. I will put them up against Mavic deemax DH rims | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$400.00 | | Purchased At: | Supergo | | Strengths: | Strong, unbreakable. | | Weaknesses: | I have to be a jerk and say weight | | Similar Products Used: | Rolf propel, Mavic Dee Max | | Bottom Line: | Bought as a wheelset and have had a ton of luck. They are stong and unbreakable. I have had no tube issues. Just use a quality downhill tube and you should be all set. A+ product. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from Phoenix, AZ Date Reviewed: December 3, 2002 | | Favorite Trail: | anything that doesn't look ridable | | Duration Product Used: | 3 months | | Strengths: | looks good(gunmetal gray) price strong, but... | | Weaknesses: | sharp edges tend to pinch tubes and cut tires you need strong metal tire levers to get tires on them
| | Similar Products Used: | Mavic HED | | Bike Setup: | KHS Dominatrax Hanebrink Romic | | Bottom Line: | Strong rims, but they waste tires and tubes. If you're a lightweight smooth type of flow rider, then I'd recommend these. If you're a smash through it and get to the bottom of the hill type, these aren't for you.
