Spinergy has upped the ante again. These new MTB wheels are faster, lighter and stiffer than ever before and the use of PBO® fiber spokes makes them more chock absorbing and more durable than any wheels on the planet.

Absolute rubbish. Any time I have ridden in the rain my bearings were flooded. The hub seals are the worst I've ever seen. Not to mention the bearings which were cheap and nasty and were replaced within a week of buying them. The rims scratch easy and the stickers come off. The free hub is also crap and after time the whole rear hub works it's way lose. I've had two sets of these both bought brand new and both were the same. I'm a professional racer who rides 25-30 hours a week and races XC Marathons and these wheels have cost me races. These wheels will let you down if you ride them hard or long enough. Bottom Line:
I have the Xyclone Races. So far these have been great race wheels. The PBO spokes actually soften the ride of my hardtail through super rocky sections.
I broke a front spoke at the aluminum nipple near the rim in the middle of last season. No shops in Vegas or in Southern Cali carry spokes, except one, but they had older versions that weren't compatibly. Once I emailed Spinergy, though, they sent me a couple right away and I was back on the trail.
I just tore the rear hub to pieces on the drive side two Sundays ago. I was riding uphill when it happened. It might have had cracks before that I didn't notice. Anyway, I sent the wheel back to Spinergy for warranty and I got it back literally in one week. In FedEx 3 day on Wed. afternoon, back on my porch on next Wed. when I got home from work! New cassette body and hub relaced to the rim, and the hub was a new design that was beefed up in the area mine broke. I don't think it'll happen again.
No other problems. Can't wait for this season! Get these if you wanna go fast.

Weaknesses:
Because I use Stan's, they require extra time to true. I tweaked my front wheel once. To true it, I had to pull the tire, sealant, and strips out (The spokes can only be adjusted via the nut in the rim) It's been fine since, and the rear has never needed any work.

This a follow up post to my earlier review. The customer service from spinergy was terrible. Initially the reps from Spinergy did not want to take the wheel back and insisted that the hub would loosen up with time (despite the fact that I already had over 200 miles on it). Eventually, my LBS sent in my rear wheel and they agreed to fix or replace the rear hub under warranty and my LBS shipped it to them priority mail. So far so good. Two and a half weeks and several unreturned phone calls later, my LBS finally gets a Spinergy rep on the phone again. Apparently they had not diagnosed the problem yet because, "noone here at the factorty has a mountain bike." They did finally fix the problem and return my wheel but it took more than a month from the date the wheel was initially shipped. Thankfully, my LBS lent me a rear wheel to ride on while it was gone. Now that my wheels are functioning properly I really enjoy their performance. They stay in true remarkably well and accelerate and absorb shock as advertised. I think Spinergy has a good product, they just need to back it up with better customer customer service. Would I buy again? Maybe.

This is an updated review, based on 7/11/2003 below. After Spinergy replaced the freewheel body with circular profile pawl spring with an updated square profile one, the spring seems to remain where it should be.
Except for a minor sideways flex due to either flexy carbon spokes or lack of truing (not necessarily a disadvantage as it may be intentional by the designers to add comfort), the overall feeling is close to outstanding. I've converted them to tubeless using Stan NoTubes, and with the ultra light Conti Twister Supersonic, it feels like your riding a road bike. Particularly apparent on those 10-miles uphills, it's almost like flying. And at the same time, the wheels feels really strong and trustworthy on those technical downhills as well. This combination is invaluable!
Another benefit is that the hubs very easy to disassemble (and assemble).

I've spent several hundered hours of hard training just to peak perform on my upcoming A priority marathon races: is it worthwhile to trust the new spring - or should I go the secure (and expensive) Mavic CrossMax way?
Has Spinergy named these wheels after a short lived weather phenomenon? Buy it if you've got the big bucks and ride 100km/year, otherwise don't!
PS. All manufacturers experience material/production flaws. How/if they correct them is the interesting part. So, my rating is conditional: if the spring stays in place throughout the season, add two flamin' chilis :) (will toon in l8r to tell...)

The problem I have is with the rear hub. After a couple of muddy races and bike cleanings later the rear hub has so much resistance in it that it will turn the cranks when I push it. I'm going to take it apart and hopefully fix it. I know mud and water can hurt hubs, but I've never had a problem with my Shimano's. I'm wishing I would have bought the King hubs instead.

I've had my Spinergy Xyclone Ceramic wheelset for about a year and have ridden them in all types of conditions. In all that time I've only needed a minor truing on the rear wheel. They have had a problem with excessive drag on the rear hub if I over tighten the skewer, but despite other reviews I've read, Spinergy has been very helpful in trying to solve this problem. They now have detailed diagrams of all their wheelsets on their website and seem to be improving their spare parts availability. I discovered that a missing o-ring under the non-drive side dustcap was the culprit of my problem. Someone at Spinergy ran over to the parts warehouse on their lunchbreak and got me the missing o-ring and a replacement cassette seal that I needed and mailed it to me that day. Once I contacted the right person, I found that Spinergy took a real concern about getting my wheel back on the road fast. I've found these wheels to be excellent, with a nice compliant ride while not being too "flexy". I been so impressed with my wheels and the customer support I've received, I bought a pair of 2002 Xyclone Race wheels. The new hub design and materials are outstanding, and these are a nice riding very fast set of wheels. In fact, I rode them on the road this morning and maintained about 18 miles an hour, passing a few guys on road bikes! Someone looking for high performence wheels would love these just be willing to shell out some dough.
Weaknesses:
I haven't noticed any beyond the o-ring that was missing from my rear hub. The 2002 race wheels do require you to remove the tire and rim tape to true them, but to me this is a small price to pay for the improvements it's allowed in the hub design.
Ibis Frame, XT drivetrain and brakes, RaceFace cranks and titanium bottom bracket, Manitou SX Carbon fork, Easton carbon bars and seatpost, Chris King headset.
Bottom Line:
Great wheels that need a little care but well worth it. Much better than there older wheels. Improved Spinergy customer service.

Bottom Line:
I JUST got them 2 days ago, the first thing I noticed was scrathes on the black finish all around the hub by the wheel assembler that should be fired!, next the super smooth spin of the front wheel bearings (10!) then I spun the back wheel holding the axles I was shocked at how much resistance the bearings had, did not spin well at all (smooth but WAY tight!), then I held it by the freebody to spin it,,well my guess is the complaints were heard about the previous years freebody having too little of spring tension,,,lets just say they fixed that problem,,to an EXTREME! The ratchet action is so heavy it spun to a stop after a few rotations of a swift spin due to already mentioned tight bearing but three times worse because of the spring tension on the dogs in the freehub, the craftsmanship of the hub is incredible, VERY solid made this year, I removed the freehub and took the wrap around spring (near snapring!) and opened it so it would relieve extreme pressure of the ratchet, next I removed 2 of the three bearing seals (1 not reachable) and removed the tar that Spinergys bearing manufacturer calls grease and applied a little bit of a much lighter grease and put some light grease in the spacer then reassembled,,result,,a wheel that spins a heavenly as the front! Now when I get the chain gaurd that goes between cassette and spokes in a couple of days that was suppose to come with them I will actually ride them,,NOW for the real problem, the radial laced front wheel is a great idea for taking impacts (superior design)but this is not used on the disc, they use a cross spoke pattern for better handling of torque forces so why did they (on rear wheel) put the radial lacing on the drive side of the wheel and the cross pattern on the other side where its not needed? All this before I they even reach my bike,,,hmmm, do not use without that stupid peice of plastic, these wheels will be trashed if you over shift ONE time so purple locktite your derailluer adjustment screws so there is less chance of backing off and use the guard. Good day and ride hard!

Since I don't like carrying my bike five miles I had a set of king/D521's built that are heavier but completely bombproof. Maybe the xyclones would work for an extremely lightweight rider - I am 185 - or maybe I just got unlucky, but the wheel failure has not been confidence building in spite of its great riding characteristics.

Strengths:
These wheels are lightweight, making climbing and accelerating much easier. The spokes allow for shock absorption, and they do not come out of true.
Weaknesses:
Skewers have to be cranked down or they get loose and allow wheels to slip.
Similar Products Used:
Wheels w/ XT hubs, Mavic 217 rims, 14/15 spokes and CODA disc specific hubs, and mavic rims
Bike Setup:
Cannondale CAAD4 frame with Fatty Ultra fork, full XTR grouppo, Rock Shox suspension seatpost, Easton EA70 bars.
Bottom Line:
These light wheels help with climbing, accelerating, riding technical stuff, and are great in races. I have used them in multiple cross country events, a 100 mile race, 24 hour relay race, and numerous training rides without problems.

Luckily my Shop showed me a very nice gesture taking these whhels back. The free hub is so fragile that it hurts! Two times they failed - a long way from home. One time in a race. What a pity, since the whhel seems to be OK otherwise

Bottom Line:
This is an update from my previous post. Took the bike to Durango for the UCI world cup race and did some riding and racing. The spring failed again and I had only one pawl engaging. What led to my discovery of this problem was a failure of larger proprotions. My son borrowed the rear wheel after his Mavic Crossroc spoke seats backed out and the wheel came out of tension. (Costing him a the Junior X time trial) but thats another story. The Edco hub that is on the spinergy has a sleeve on the axel thats sits medial to the freehub and is a spacer of sorts. This sleeve apparently has some friction and developed some heat and bonded to the axel causing the whole axel to spin in the drops and spinning the nut off the freehub side and allowing the chain to drop into the spokes and damage the tensioning threads on the spokes. Sound fun yet? So 1000 miles from home in the mecca of mtbing and no wheels. Back at home my LBS is ordering replacement parts. I bet I don't have my wheel for next weekends race. Lacing up a shimano hub to hedge my bet.

Weaknesses:

Bottom Line:
These wheels are incredible. I've had them since the first of the year and they have made a huge difference in my climbing and the comfort level on my bike. I haven't had the spring problem listed above and hopefully won't. I don't care for the decals, but they sent me new ones before I ever had a problem (I just stated that I didn't think they'd last in our muddy terrain and I got replacements!). I want an extra set for commuting - of course they're too expensive for that (4 flamin' cachungas for value - 5 overall)!

Bottom Line:
My LBS is great and was able to manufacture a "new" spring out of a QR spring that I think will be tougher and last much longer, the first lasted about a month. A friend of mine has the same wheelset and had the same problem.

Bottom Line:
the front wheelset is superlight, goes anywhere I point it, the back wheelset spins like a blender, choppin' up sticks and stuff like a buzz saw...BUT I'm not very pleased with the engineering; the hub has three "teeth" held in place by a thin, fragile, wire hoop. This little wire has broken after @ 25 hrs of various terrain and I'm convinced that it's only a matter of time until it breaks again.(once the wire goes, so goes your ride) Woody's has been great about replacing it, and they gave me a great deal on the pair. these climb like monkeys, and I hope this little setback doesn't happen to anyone else.
