Favorite Trail:Hannah Swarton's Remove
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $575.00
Strengths:They are Very strong, and very light. They have good (Hadley internals) hubs that roll smoothly and engage quickly. One of the few light wheelsets that come 20mm compatible and they Look dang cool as well.
Weaknesses:A little funky-you need a special tool to true them-although, in a year of hard riding they have yet to go out of true
Similar Products Used:Mavic Crossmax wheels, WTB Lazerbeams, American Classic MTB 350
Bike Setup:All-Mountain Hardtail, Pike (20mm converted front hub-the bomb), xt cranks, Geax Sturdy Tires, Avid/ sram stuff.
Bottom Line:I was apprehensive buying these, but I've been absolutely delighted riding them for over a year now. They spin up and accelerate great (and they are surprisingly stiff under power!!). And yet, due to those cool spokes, they have a nice dampening quality as well (especially appreciated on a hardtail!)--from Kingdom Trails, to lynn woods, to a few DH lift service days at Mt Snow, to some long, long Epic xc rides, these wheels have really held up, look great and feel great.

Also, I highly recommend getting them with the 20mm thru axle converted option-I'm a big fan of the thru-axle even on xc forks and xc applications and this is one of the few 'light' wheels' where that is even possible.

Pick up a pair, you won't regret it! Why run heavy wheels when you can run lighter wheels that are just as strong?!?

I don't see any on the trails. 3 foot drops.. never had to do any service on these wheels. Would recommend these wheels to my friends. When i buy a 29er i am buying them too.

Strengths:Spinergy has great customer service, with helpful advice and fast response time. The wheels were durable and lightweight. Very easy to maintain.
Weaknesses:1. Although, I haven't had to true often, it was a bit of a pain because one has to take tire/tube/rim strip off to perform the work.
2. I believe the hub alignment is offset, which like another reviewer said, doesn't cause any problems but it does make the disc brake rotor oscillate making the brakes rub just slightly even after countless adjustments.
3. I haven't broken any spokes but the spoke covering can be nicked easily. 4. Since the wheels are proprietary, extra spokes, rims, needs to be bought through them. Although, ordering is a breeze with them, it is a little more work than just wandering into any bike shop to buy a spoke.
Similar Products Used:Mavic, Specialized, Shimano
Bottom Line:Overall, I like the wheels. No "major" issues, I got what I paid for, a nice set of lightweight wheels at a reasonable price, there are some weaknesses but not a deal breaker.

Date Reviewed: October 27, 2008
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $550.00
Purchased At:Kim's
Strengths:They stay true, they're light, seem strong and don't flex at all as some people seem to think they might.
Weaknesses:I've had or have had issues with: front bearings; freehub bearings; hub centralisation; water ingress; spoke damage; poor quality control in general. They're quite expensive as a consequence of these issues (expect more).
Bike Setup:AM setup ridden quite hard at times; no drops > 2 feet or so
Bottom Line:I couldn't say that I'd buy these wheels again as I've felt disappointed about their overall quality given their price. I feel that Spinergy could cure most of the problems quite easily if they care to.

The good;
They seem quite strong. I read comments prior to purchase talking of potential flex though I've not experienced any flex at all. The spokes feel as strong and inflexable as steel to me. These wheels have also remained very true during the year's use, where they've been ridden quite hard at times over rough, rocky sections, cornered hard, and a few pretty insignificant drops thrown in here and there. I was also impressed with the weight of them in comparisson to my previous wheels that were nothing special (average budget wheels).

The bad;
The front wheel never rotated very smoothly from new, it was always a it notchy akin to an overtightened cone bearing in feel. It was also quite noisy when spun in free air. I managed to cure much a the notchy friction eventually by repressing the bearing outer shells firmly into the hub. They remained noisy though. These bearings have failed with play in one year, or about 850 miles of use.

The "Enduro 6902 SRS DINP5ABEC5" seals used in the freehub bearings are utterly rubbish at preventing mud/water ingress. Honestly, any mud/water that passes the cassette lockring flows freely into these bearings and destroys them. I've had to improvise and install a additional seal under the lockring to help prevent this now. They should not bother using these bearings at all and instread should use the same "Enduro 6902 LLB" as used for the main rear wheel bearings instead (same size) as the seals would be much more effective (typical RS seal).

The rear hub body in relation to the bearings has been machined off-centre. This means the brake disc oscillates off-centre, too. This doesn't cause an issue other than it's just poor engineering, especially for a wheel of this cost.

Both the front and the rear rims have a problem with water retention. After use in wet conditions, or a hosing down, the rim cavities can collect a fair amount of water, which is difficult to release. If I place my innertube vavle core nearest the ground and push it in and out a few times it can gradually pump out the water. I've half a mind to drill a hole in the rim wall somewhere and be damned creating a potential weak point.

The rim weld seam appears poorly finished as it bubbles of the rim. It looks cheap.

The plastic spoke "outer" that covers the inner fibres are quite easily damaged if/when your wheels pick up rocks. I've not had a spoke break yet, nor do any of the fibres appear terminally damaged, it's just the plastic outers that have suffered a bit.

The pawl spring wasn't installed correctly from new. It took me dismantling the freehub out of curiousity one day to realise this. I effectively had one pawl properly sprung (properly engaging), one half sprung, and one not sprung at all. It required installing the pawl spring "gap" appropriately on either side of the "pin" (anyone familiar with the design may know what I mean here).

The decal stickers look fairly cheap with them not even being anti-aliased. :P

Other than this they're good wheels! No, honestly, they're not bad wheels I don't think, they could just be made so much better if the company took care of stupid problems like the above. Hopefully these comments here can be seen as helpful in that regard assuming anyone cares.

Strengths:Light, stiff, fast, and durable.
Weaknesses:None so far.
Similar Products Used:Other cheap wheelsets. Mavic 222, Rhinolite...
Bike Setup:Giant Xtc with a Marzocchi Mx Pro fork. Fire Xc tires.
Bottom Line:These wheels are amazing. I bought these wheels because I was tired of bending and breaking spokes on cheaper wheelsets. These wheels are well worth the money. They are very stiff and durable. I have not changed my riding style since I bought these wheels, and they are still as true as the day I got them. They can take some abuse. This probably is not the best wheelset you could get, but my opinion is this is the best bang for your buck. If you are looking for a nice upgrade from like a Mavic 222 wheelset or something along those lines, this is the way to go.

Bottom Line:Great wheels, my main wheels on all my bikes last 5 years or so. Setup with tubeless on non-tubeless tires very easily. Only trued a couple of times 3 sets in last 5 years.
(I run these with with non tubeless Wtb Mutano Raptor 2.4s and is and absolutely super tight fit for Ghetto tubeless or with Stans rim strip (tough to seat in narrow rim channel.) Search mtbr forums for review of Mutanos with these wheels tubeless. Anyway, so you get a bombproof actually lightweight tubeless setup.)
These wheels absorb shock like crazy and are reasonably stiff laterally. Great customer service now and fairly easy to work on your self. Great non fault replacement to upgrade. I am now waiting for them to come out with a 650b version.

Weaknesses:Packaging they come in does not protect axles well, wheels are faultless however.
Similar Products Used:Mavics.
Bike Setup:Specialized XC Pro (warranty replacement for 03 Enduro Pro), lot's of high end parts
Bottom Line:I have them with white spokes and they look awesome on my red frame with black parts. On the first ride a stick the thickness of my middle finger jumped into the rear wheel and I thought 'here we go, they lasted one ride' - but no, the stick was sliced clean in two and didn't leave a single mark on the wheels, awesome !

I had them shipped from the US and the boxes didn't protect the rear axle too well as it wore a hole in the side of the box, no damage but be careful if shipping long distances.

I'm a heavy rider at 100kg so getting something competition lite that easily supports my size is excellent - and for $480 USD incredible value. The best thing is the looks though, every time I look at my bike I want to ride it - and isn't that what it's all about ?

Top Marks, one of the best uprades I've made in 20+ years of riding.

Strengths:for the light weight, excellent strength and durability... held up after doing northstar, although other components didn't, and i weigh 190+.
Weaknesses:if the spokes have impact on rocks or anything sharp, the outer composite layer tears, and leaves the fibrous inner-twined part exposed which tears quite easily. i'm assuming this compromises the integrity of strength, and this has resulted in me having to frequently replace spokes and true the rim. the primary problem is finding a dealer that carries the spokes.

Strengths:Bomb proof! I am an L&F female and have ridden with these wheels for four years. The only complant that I have is the cheap quick releases that are shipped with such a high end wheelset. I understand that they are coming with better ones now.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $450.00
Purchased At:eBay
Strengths:Light, durable, looks, customer service
Weaknesses:none, expensive - but not in comparison to similar products
Similar Products Used:Crossmax SL, Mavic 517, 222, 323 etc
Bike Setup:Custom '05 S-Works FSR, full xtr, Fox TALAS, Racing Ralph 2.4 tires (which work and look great on this bike - the whole bike is all black with white letters and the spinergies fit right in)
Bottom Line:Well done spinergy. I've beat the crap out of these for a year and a half since the new versions came out (Michigan XC and several outwest trips). The bearings run smooth + are super super easy to maintain. They're light, but not as light as other comparable products. I think the weight on the website is accurate now, but when I bought mine they still had the weight of the old ones on there. (which were lighter - I probably wouldn't have bought them had I known)... That being said, I love the wheelset and am glad I made the purchase. I will always ride a spinergy wheel after my experience with these. Their customer service has been superb and spare spokes (not that I've needed any) are easy to get from them. I've never trued them. I did have one spoke come loose at the very begining, but none since. Bomb proof (as far as aggresive XC or AM), light, look great, fair price, great customer service... this is a no brainer, get them! I really don't do many reviews on here unless I think it's deserved. This is one of them and very justly earned in my opinion.

Strengths:light weight, sexy looks, durability, low maintenance
Weaknesses:not marketed very well, I never see anyone that has them

Bike Setup:santa cruz superlight, xtr canks, derailler, cassette, reba 100mm front fork, cane creek cloud nine rear suspension, easton monkey light bar, stans no-tube system.
Bottom Line:this is the best wheelset I have ever used. I have NEVER had to true these wheels, and with stans no-tube system in them they are ridiculously light! The worst thing that ever happened was I had somehow cut the plastic housing on one of the spokes and exposed the fibers inside.I simply applied some epoxy over it, then painted it black, you almost can't even tell. Never had any problem with the hubs. Not sure why this wheelset isn't everywhere, it totally rocks!

Strengths:Strong, light, fast, innovative. Not just an XC wheelset, these guys are very strong and stiff and will make you a faster rider.
Weaknesses:None so far. Well, they made me overcook corners because they carry so much speed, but that's hardly a weakness.
Similar Products Used:Couple of levels of Mavics, Suns
Bike Setup:Old Dawg. Some new tricks. Wheelset unfortunately outclasses bike.
Bottom Line:It's a cool feeling to punish these light and stylish wheels and see them come out true. They're light and fast and strong... something often claimed and rarely delivered. Any Spinergy workers checking how their product rates on MTBR? Be proud.

Weaknesses:Absolutely none.
Similar Products Used:Mavic Crossmax SL's & XL's, Shimano (?)
Bike Setup:XC hardtail with SRAM X0, REBA forks, Juicy Ultimates...
Bottom Line:The absolute BEST wheelset I have ever used. Rode these babies in the Crocodile Trophy mtb race with no problems whatsoever. If you're riding a hardtail (like me) you'll definately appreciate these wheels (or ANY bike for that matter).

Strengths:Really light weight. Stiff. REALLY Durable. Great looks! Denton at Spinergy provides excellent customer service!
Weaknesses:Chain sucked behind rear cassette due to a misaligned derailleur and shredded 10 spokes. I don't blame the wheels at all! I misaligned the derailleur int he first place. Nevertheless, the wheels never failed!!! They were even still true!
Similar Products Used:XRP, Shimano XT, Skyway Tuff II Graphites (Bring back any memories?)
Bike Setup:Giant Reign/Fox Vanilla/SRAM XO/Raceface NEXT LP/WTB
Bottom Line:I just sprung for my second pair of these aesthetically pleasing and amazingly functional wheels; this time in blue.

These Xyclones have it all. They hold up under all kinds of abuse. I did 30 miles in the Demo with 10 spokes shredded to bits and I didn't have ANY clue that they were destroyed until I got home at night and started my cleanup. Replacement spokes are relatively cheap and I was back on the trail within a week.

Also, they are uber-light, look great and they roll very well.

Buy these wheels! Or don't. And I will continue to be one of the few folks around sportin' these beauties.

Great for XC/Freeride use.

Strengths:light ans strong
Weaknesses:the spokes housings can be cracked
Similar Products Used:Mavic Crossmax, Shimano XT
Bike Setup:Titus Quasi
Bottom Line:I'm light. I can get away with riding a 1610 gram wheelset on a six inch travel bike with Maxxis extra sticky tires in Moab. This wheelset has never in five years let me down. I crack the spoke housing when a rock flew into the spokes, but the spoke interior fibers never broke. I have never had to true this wheelset. Just a minor tweek here and there. I've replaced the bearings twice. These things rock. 5 for value because they are durable and 5 overall because they work.

Strengths:The rims and spokes are definintely the best out there.
Weaknesses:The axle and freehub body.
Similar Products Used:Crossmax, bontrager, shimano
Bike Setup:04 Enduro pro Stock except for spinergys
Bottom Line:These wheels will take more abuse than any other wheel out there, thats a fact. The freehub body and axle will let you down if you ride more than 5,000 miles a year. I have not had a problem with there customer service. Crossmaxes and everything else crumble after a year of riding, It was a year before I had to true my rear spinergy wheel. With all that said, the positives out weigh the negatives, I own two sets of wheels, one for the race bike with the lefty and the other for the enduro.

Bottom Line:to be honest, when i first dragged these babies out of the box i thought, how the heck are these gona hold me up?? it takes a bit of abusive riding to develop some trust in these 'modern technology' wheels, and thats what i gave them. dumped on a 5" trail bike they have handled the works so far. to put them in context, i had a bearing issue with my cannondale prophet thanks to some dropoffs, and the spynergys came out fine. i thought it would be vice versa, but fortunately not. it seems the newer releases of these wheels have been worked on, as i have had no troubles with them yet and i love their fast acceleration and head turner appearance.

They are much smoother rims than expected, seems to accelerate with a burst, very strong, have taken 2-3ft drops and 500 miles later no problems. I'm 190lbs and there is no sign of stress or wear.
