King headset, Michelin Wildgripper Hot S. | | Bottom Line: | This review is for the Spinergy Fall line FR Wheels.
These wheels are the biggest piece of junk I've ever used. Spinergy advertises these to wheels work with Shimano 8 & 9 speed clusters. This is only half tru. The don't work with the new XT or XTR clusters. XTR doesn't even fit on the hub, & my new style XT cluster actually cuts into the hub. Since the cluster continues to move forward while I coast, I have a silly amount of slack chain, and a good 1/2 to full revolution prior to the rear wheel engaging again. This doesn't even address the questionable integrity of the hub now that it's been cut into by the cluser. ARRGGHH!!
I called Spinergy to share this issue with them, and spoke with Ermillo who told me this was a "compatability issue", and they would not replace my wheel, nor do anything else for me. I had to beg for a hub, and was told he had to check with the big boss, and would get back to me the next day. After no return call as promised, I had to call back only to find out this guy was out of the office for a week. What a pain in the butt!
The only good thing I can say is the the wheel is strong, and I've never had to true it. I ride agressive cross country, and try to get air at every opportunity. I weigh 195lbs. Bummer is the hub is junk, and the company is a vacume of customer service
Supergo is my only saving Grace. They have agreed to allow me to return these wheels & trade up to Crossmax XL disc (paying the difference of course). The customer service at Supergo is excellent, and I will always purchase my equipment from them (and my local shop). They don't carry this wheel any longer, so you can draw your own conclusions.
If you're thinking of ANY Spinergy product...DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS JUNK! These people do not stand by their products. At $650 with tax & shipping, you're paying about $625 too much. I have never been so disapointed with any mountain bike component I've owned...ever!! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Stick 'em back on | | Bike Setup: | K2 4000 and K2 4500 Carbon | | Bottom Line: | I suspect that those who have written negative comments fall into the group of overweight riders on light bikes, freeriding and dropping off large jumps. I saw one guy who must have weighted in at 250 lbs jumping off huge drop offs, smashing his bike and moaning that it couldn't take the hits. Idiot.
I have two sets of X-roxs. I bought both pairs used. Two of my friends have used them, one guys races and swears by them. It would seem that the 3 of us are buying up all used X-roxs as we love these wheels.
They are strong and light. Always true, take huge hits and keep on going. They do flex, but get a set of X-beam stiffeners and you will be all set. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Spinergy's customer service and knowledge of the products they sell is simply horrible and unacceptable. | | Similar Products Used: | Tune, XTR, American Classic. | | Bike Setup: | Dean Duke: race set up. | | Bottom Line: | Honestly wouldn't even recommend these wheels to someone even trying to look cool. I laugh when some other sucker has bought them. The first serious mtb ride produced a wobble in the rear wheel. Deciding to minimize the damage, my spinergy's where reduced to road ride's only on the mountain bike. $450 for a pair of mtb wheels that can't handle one ride?? Take your spinergy wheels out on a gravel road and "feel" how flexy these wheels actually are!! My braking surface has since worn thru and cracked. Spinergy will only give me 50% off "retail" price for a replacement set!! I am stationed in Germany with the army, and Spinergy has yet to answer my repeated emails and phone calls regarding replacement. It seems you can only warranty wheels in the states. Bottom line, if you want the look of spinergy wheels, buy some spoked Tune or XTR wheels and place carbon fiber tape between your spokes! I fixed those problems myself, and ended up with a heavy, flexy set of wheels that handled and accellerated like hogs. Two weeks later I had a dent in one of the rims (still can't figure out how I got it) that can't be repaired. I ended up bending it back out as best I could with a wrench.
Other than aesthetics, there is just no reason to buy these wheels--they don't do anything well and do most things poorly. After reading the previous reviews (which seem to lump mountain and road bikies together; doesn't that skew the ratings a bit?) I probably would have hesitated on buying them in the first place. But I have been blissfully riding the Rev-X road wheels for a little over a year now, none the wiser of all the apparent controversy.
I'm not a light rider (200 plus pounds), and these wheels have been on my bike from the first day I bought them. Just getting to my favorite roads entails some downtown city riding, and like a lot of places, it seems the roads here are bordering on trails for their smoothness. To this day I have not have any major problems with these wheels. I used to monitor them carefully only for delaminations (and after a major pothole smash, I was sure the rim was dented; BY GOSH THE WHEEL HELD), but after reading the previous reviews, I will be checking my pair out more thoroughly for some of the other concerns. Sometimes it's great to have so many reviews to look at, because I now have a better idea of what to expect.
THANKS, MTBR (Shameless plug).
My brake pads seem to like to chew out the rims under heavy or wet braking, and sometimes I have had to pick chunks of aluminum out of them. Such excessive wear probably can't be good, but these ARE road wheels, and heavy braking doesn't occur as frequently as off road. The freehub wobble doesn't seem to affect my shifting at all, but it does seem like quality control needs to be something that Spinergy should work on. With my weight, some lateral flex is expected, so as long as the rims are not touching the brake pads (or the frame stays and fork legs) I can live with that. The combination of a Titanium frame (with an aluminum fork) and these wheels does seem to dampen certain types of vibrations, and a recent purchase of Michelin Axial Pro clinchers really makes these wheels sing (or whatever carbon fibre does at speed).
Overall I think they are a very good ride. I wouldn't recommend them for someone on a tight budget, but ever so often you have to treat yourself, right? I always wanted something carbon fibre on my bike. So there you have it.
I like them (until they break, I guess?!). | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Finally decided to go with,.... you guess it, Spinergy...it has to do with looks, 50% of my decision making :) Okay I am a sucker for nice looking design...hell..I am an art director by training ..so sue me!!! But I have also known it to be quite strong as I have never heard any complain from anyone I know that owns a pair...okay ..maybe the compain were about the weight compare to a spoke wheelset like CrossMax but hey...I am no weight weenie...I like my hardtail below 22 pound but I am not going to break the bank just to get down to sub 20..I could but does it really matter..I am 1.8m tall...I have seen fat asses riding light bike and still want to get a lighter bike or component, In my mind, if he lost more fats, that would be the best component he could get! Sorry no offense but someone had to tell it like it is with fat weight weenie geeks.Anyway...even after deciding to go for the 98/99 spinergy extra light ( with the yellow spikes stickers)...I held back....keep going to the shop to look at it and at the last moment chicken out. This went on for a few months!!! All becos I started reading reviews on the internet about how folks using this wheelset has major accidents on it. I am now begining to question if they hold any real truth or did they like some foolhardy smucks who use the bike for extreme stunts to impress people. Anyway I decide to throw caution to the wind and got them...the fear from the reading was still there but as the months pass....I begun to stop thinking about it and just ride....No problem, used it off road and on the road and did some bunny hop on it off road to avoid some log and potholes and it still holds up!!...Now maybe, Spinergy had some faulty one that accidently pass quality control.Causing some folks to have their wheelset break under them ..my sympathy goes out to you but to those who are lying your hinnie off because you screwed-up and just need to tell a lie to get a new wheelset under warranty because you abused your wheelset..all I can say is..Liar liar saddle on fire!. I love my wheelset, They have discontinued this wheelset and even if they did carry on making it, I may not buy them as my taste and passion for component changes. Because it looks carbon fiber and hi-tech, makes people jealous and makes yourself feel great. But otherwise do you think these wheels will make you faster? Then what is w=mg? Maybe you can justify by saying that steel is light than plastic! Or maybe you can say that these carbon spokes can cut wind thus I can go faster! So what is the enlightenment? None. If you are a Spinergy owner, you know why you bought these wheels in the first place. Do you know it's crappy? Yes you do. But why you still decide to buy them? Go to a mirror and be honest to yourself. They really make you feel good too, when you heard a sweet noise as they break into PIECES - a very nice way to burn money. | Overall Rating: |

The previous owner, a good friend (had to sell them cuz his new bike had a disc), had just one problem, he blew the wheel apart using a compresor to inflate the tire. Warrenty replacement was not much of a prob. My experinces on these wheels is mixed, mostly good. Only prob I've had was breaking one layer of carbon-fiber away from the rim in one spot of hitting a step (purely my fault). Just dropped a little epoxy on the spot, sanded and it is as good as new. Being a person who has never been hard on wheels, the ability of these wheels to hold up is excellent. The previous owner was horrible on wheels and he had no problems with them. Being my set of wheels for training with about 200 miles of rough riding on them, they've held up. Must admit I am slightly scared about other responses talking of them braking, but my apprehension is only short lived because every time I ride them I remember all the reasons why I bought them in the first place. | Overall Rating: |

I bought this as a back up wheelset. The weight is equal of similar to the weight of an LX/Suns. It basically weights around a pound and a half more than my Chris King/Suns. One my first ride out I noticed the rear axle come loose. With a little elbow grease it was fixed for good. The rim is a little widder than most country rims. Side-to-side flex is virtually eliminated. No brake scrubbing when lean-riding. However, the HG cogset holder is a little weak. The cogset woobles when I free-spin the rear wheel. I compared this to the Chris Kings and found it non-existent. Woobling also exist on my LX wheelset. Hmm same cog-holder design? ONe other thing I found a little disconcerning is the alignment of the front wheel. It seems that there is a little kink on the seems. Whenever I brake, it just suddenly locks up whenever it come to that particular point. I'll try to fix it with my trusty hammer. Cross-winds is a killer to this wheelset. Please don't ride no-handed on a windy day. It's worth the cost specially to someone who rides road 95% of the time. Super-stiff compared to 3-cross spoked wheel. The stiffness translate to quicker acceleration and more efficient climbing. HOw do I know? I feel the difference. If your a rider who doesn't trash your equipment this is THE wheelset for you. If you've broken a wheel in the past you're better off with a spoked wheel. For those roadies out there. I strongly recommend this wheelset. | Overall Rating: |

I have had my wheels for about two and a half years. They are the super lights with the TI axle etc... I ride a lot in Moab and on big loops in the Mtns. I would think of myself as being hard on wheels. Well, I have never had any problem with the wheels at all. The only thing that has happened is that the rear hub comes loose. That, and when I first got them I noticed some flexing in big half pipe washes at Barlet's in Moab. A better shock (Z-2) seemed to solve that problem for the most part. In any event, it is great not to have to deal with spoke tension and trueing, dish, and lateral trueing. Spokes and nipples are a pain in the ass. Why do you think that they are never used on cars any longer? I just wish my wheels were lighter. Overall, however, I don't notice the weight and I can forget about the wheels and enjoy the trail. | Overall Rating: |

I do alot of riding in the snow and many times have left the wheels submerged in snow and my hubs/bearings never froze up. I have the spinergy Rev-X extra-lights. I have beaten them for only one month now, and not a sign of deformation. They are pretty damn stiff (as compared to 32 spoke bontrager rims, previous wheels), and they absorb high frequency vibrations very well. My ride is really, really smooth now, and they are definetely the best wheelset I have ever used. My first ride was in a lot of rain, and some grit got into the hubs after 3 hours of puddles. I would prefer that they were totally sealed (as if that is possible), but they have not shown any resistance, just the faint sound of grit. They may seem heavy, but compare them to any XT-built wheelset, and they will be about the same. If you want super-duper fast xc wheels, I would reccomend a Chris King setup of some sort, but if you never want to true a wheel again, check these out! For your reference, I weigh 165 lbs, ride a very plush full suspension bike, and ride very hard. jumping, bailing, etc. IMPORTANT NOTE: only use brakes with linear pad movement (new LX, XT, XTR, Arch Rival, Arch Supreme, etc) becuase as you wear the pads (particularly on a wet day), they will strike further and further away from the tire. As this happens, you will rub against the carbon, and you sure don't want to do that. If you can afford them, or have a sponsorship, I must they that they are the bomb (proof)! | Overall Rating: |

I bought a set of Spinergy wheels about 6 months ago, and used them primarily for road racing, I was pleased with their performance, up until about a month ago. I was coming around a corner, when I heard a loud POP. The next thing I remember, I was being carried to the ambulence at the event, and then to the hospital. My arm was broken, and I had a serious concussion, I was lucky. Three of the four spokes had snapped without warning. I checked the wheels before and after every time I used them, and I never saw any cracks, or anything that would warn me to not use them. I have tried to contact Spinergy, with NO success. I am not trying to get them to pay my medical bills, nor for a new bike (the bike was totaled), all I want is a refund. THESE WHEELS ARE DANGEROUS AND SHOULD NOT BE USED!!!!! If you are thinking about buying a set, DON'T, they eventually WILL fail. A spoke and hoop wheel, while being conventional, is still your best bet. If a spoke and hoop wheel fails, they CAN be repaired, and sometimes you can ride out on one. At the very least, you will be able to walk home (rather than ride in an ambulance).Product 2 stars. My bike fell of a roof rack at 75 mph and landed on the front rim. Well I must say I am pretty impressed. The rim didn't break, it didn't even bend. They were the only thing that didn't bend or brake ( along with the frame ). I called Spinergy and expressed to them how happy I was. Although I did tell them that I am not putting Spinergy's on my new bike ( Jamis Dakar Pro ) I told them I am putting Spins on it, and I did. THey said if I wasn't satified, they would sell me a new pair of Spinergy's at a nice discount. Fairly good product ( my old ones did break ) and great service. What else do ya need? I'd give them 5 flaming shit-piles if they weren't so expensive.Oh yeah, if you send them back in a box other than a Spinergy box, be prepared to pay $2.00 extra! I called Spinergy about this and the warranty manager told me to bring the wheels into their office (its in CT about 40 minutes from my house). I brought the wheels in and he took one look at them and said i'll be right back. About 10 minutes later he came out with a brand new set of 98 wheels which he had even mounted my tires on. He even gave me new spoke protectors and a magnet no charge at all, and he could not have been nicer about doing it. If you're in Canada, consider this before you buy: I got a set last year, which I loved right up until I discovered (thanks to Spinergy's web site) that they were, in fact, '96s and not the '97s I'd paid for. Through my dealer, the Canadian distributor agreed to replace them. So far, so good... except it's been 6 MONTHS and I still don't have a set of wheels! My frame hangs uselessly in the basement, wheel-less. If this is any indication of how Spinergy's Canadian distributor would handle, for example, a crash replacement... don't buy them. However, if you obsessively check over your bike after rides (like a lot of us do), you'll notice any damage. These wheels are most vulnerable to damage from scrapes, which shear off a layer of fibre. Try and protect the wheels against this type of damage, then put a protective layer of wax on each spoke, and it'll look great. The wheels are expensive, but that's life. Some questions that i have been asked were 1.What happens if a stick got caught in them? I replied they cut the stick I have had this happen to me and nothing has happened. I feel that spinergy wheels are the greatest from riding spoked rimes that would come out of true after a couple of rides is what made me want to buy them. they are not bomb proof they are though strong enough for agresive cross country riding. I have ripped lugges off of two tires, while useing spenergys so I feel that I ride some what aggressively. They make you want to push every corner becouse they handle twice that of spoked rimes. They are also stiff sprinters I dought that I will ever go back to spokes. | Overall Rating: |

A nice rim to ride on, but I'd hate to pay for them. Test rode a pair of demos for a week up at Tahoe. The ride on them was great! Their durability was not. I'm a 180 pound poor college student who takes a bong hit, then tears down the hill. Bent the rear rim, slightly, and put a few dings in the carbon fiber. Glad I didn't pay for them, the shop that told me they were indestructible wasn't.

Well fellow riders, lot of good and bad things have been said about these wheels, and I can only add to the confusion my own experience. Got a pair of late 96 on the spring (of 97) and have beat the crap out of them on my Mantra race (Klein) without a problem. Now a few weeks back went on long trip and carry the whole thing on a hard shell (Iron case). Did rid a little overseas but not as much I'd have love to; the point is when I came back and put the bike togheter again, the rear wheel develped a kinda loose bearing. Not a problem! when to my lbs and theyd decided to sent the wheel back to Spynergy for surgery after talking with them on the phone. After a long but patient wait......(about 6 business days) got a big surprise: Senor Spynergy sent me a whole new 97 rear wheel !!!! my cost $20 bucks for the overnight thang. A miracle?, luck?, a fair deal? don't know fellas, all I know is that I'm back on the trails hammering hard as never before...As far as I'm concern these wheels are great as long as you keep them clean and don't thing they are made are of Kryptonite or something. Nothing last forever, but for me and the cross country style they worked pretty well. I did pay for them, not my daddy (don't have one anyway), and I'm far from owning a bike store or such. When judging a product one need to be realistic and perhaps enlist not only a little faith but also little luck...Happy trails to you all, ElCapitan :-) | Overall Rating: |

Hey Blake Spencer, Some of us aren't priviledged enough to be fully sponsored by Litespeed cycles or have our Dad own a bike shop so we don't get your no price replacement policy, so until you pay for the wheels with your own money instead of having your dad buy them for you stop sounding like an advertisement and shell out your own dough for a set of these bad boys. I just plunked down $541.38 for a Set of the new 98' Spinergy Roks-XE twelve spoke wheels. They are on backorder so I can't tell you how good/bad they are yet, but I'll keep you guys updated. Well, there certaintly appear to be a lot of conflicting opinions here. Kind of a love hate thing. It would have been nice if people had stated the year of their wheels as Spinergy has made quite a few changes. The best thing to keep in mind is that everything will fail at some point. There is no such thing as a truly bombproof wheel. For all the people that destroyed their Spinergy wheels and returned to Spoked wheels i would ask how many times their conventional wheels got trashed. So make your own decision, buy what you want and keep an open mind. And if any real mountain bikers laugh at you or call you a poser slap'em up side the head. As for my experience with Spinery wheels at the shop I work in I'll give them a rating of 4. | Overall Rating: |

These wheels are the best wheels I think I have ever had. The thing that is so great about them is they never have to be trued, they never are suppose to break, and they are not as heavy as you think they are, and the guy at the shop I bought them from said if anything ever happened to them he would get me a new wheel for no charge. So if you want a wheel that gives an awsome ride you never have to do anything to them I highly recommed these areodynamic wheels. | Overall Rating: |

Yes, this wheel chips and flex but that can be cured by putting X-beam and rupping spokes with some tape before it gets scrached. Also if the spokes start to spread you can simply put thin layer of carbon fiber on top of the crack or spread and glue it. So keep your eyes on the spokes after you ride and cure it before it becomes too late. If you are person like me who just don't like tuning your wheel often, get these, otherwise you don't have to spend so much money on the wheel.(there are a lot more stuff you can get with the money) I really like this set though........ I would give 4 star for the poor warranty.

Expensive, but otherwise effective. Yes, they chip (not on the V section, but on the spoke's edges), they're lighter than what I had before (Spins), are flexy on the longitudinal axis, and best of all, they've lasted 18 months of 3 times per week off road rides. Could have better rims and hub. Could also be made here instead of in Mexico with cheap labor. Four chilies for the engineering, two for its disadvantages. | Overall Rating: |

Damn, alot of bad reviews on this rim. I have a set, and i have not had any chipping or uneven breaking. I have crashed hard several times and jump my bike quite a bit, and have not seen any damage or untruing as a result. One thing i wanted to say was that the flex that is in the rims acts as though it were a small shock and can be stiffend up using the edge protectors (i have them in the front and rear); i weigh 185. Btw u SHOULD use the protectors on the rear. I do have one gripe, slime WILL clog the extenders (yea i know why not move em to the top or away from the bottom. i did), a very small amount will cause them to bind after it dries inside and water does not get it out. The way i solved it was soaking them in canola oil, then grabbing the tip of the extender with needle nose pliers moved it around, and this for me has solved the problem somewhat. My advice though DONT use slime and extenders. Also, dont lose the extenders, the replacement set cost me $20 and i only needed one. | Overall Rating: |

I've been using the Spinergy wheels for about 3 weeks now and I have to admit that they do what they claim. I also own Spin rims and a set of Mavic Crossmax wheels. The Spinergy rims are lighter than the Spins, but heavier than the Crossmax. I've raced cross-country and jumped no higher than about 5 feet at about 25+ miles/hr with all 3 rims. I've tweaked the Mavics a bit, but both composite rims survived the landing without damage. On pavement, I've tested all 3 rims on a 300 meter straight run with about 3 runs per rim on 3 different days. I've averaged faster times with the Crossmax with about a 2 second lead over the Spinergy rims. The Spin rims averaged about 4.5 seconds slower than the Spinergys. I think that the weight was the factor. The higher inertial mass of the rim probably had a lot to do with the results. There was hardly any wind on all 3 days, and the test site was identical with the same weather conditions. I am in pretty good shape at 5'4 and 148 pounds so I may be smaller than average. I used my Gary Fisher hardtail for the results using Yeti knobbies. I'm aware of the comments of others regarding the Spinergies, but I will take my chances. I will be your test pilot and I will keep you informed. Between the Spinergy and the Spin... I would pick the Spinergy for now. They're lighter and faster by MY tests. The feedback that the Spinergy offers is more like my Mavics... and I do ride hard during turns. The Spins are great too, but the stiffness was something that I wasn't ready for. After using the Spins, I've found that the stiffness helps on hardpack. The Spinergy rims seemed to excel on technical terrain, however both composites are a bit noisy. I tested them offroad at Kualoa Ranch, Waimea Downhill, and Aiea Loop Trail. Your results may vary... and the Spinergy rims were about 80 bucks more than the Spins. Whatever your choice, I hope you have fun. If you want more info... pls email me at HyperMMX@aol.com Laters! | Overall Rating: |

I have had the 96 spinergys for a little over a year now. I have put them through some serious abuse, because we ride around 100 miles a week on rough and tough arizona chunk. These wheels are indeed bombproof. However baseball sized ruble rocks can damage the spokes if they hit them the wrong way. Spinergy's edge protectors helped this. The braking surface on the rim is below par, but I have absolutely no problems stopping on a dime with v-brakes. Valve extenders are a pain in the bum. Some Continental tires (esp kevlars) are nearly impossible to get off these rims without 2 levers and broken knuckles.NOT RECOMMENDED FOR RACING ! It will be over by the time you get done fussing with a flat tire , valve extenders, etc. However, for the average - hardcore rider that wants recreation bombproof wheels and can shed the $$$, they are very reliable. The Spinergys have outlasted most of my friend's wheels. | Overall Rating: |

I have gone through 5 wheels in less than a year! The uneven braking is NOT caused by poor brake adjustment. The problem is caused by the hub braking away from the wheel. I was in a jam and needed a wheel fast, so I called Scott, the service manager @ Spinergy and worked a deal. I gave him my credit card number to hold while he shipped me a new wheel. I was to ship my wheel back for the to look at. Scott said he would not charge my credit card until after they looked at my wheel. A couple of days later I called Citibank to find out they did charge me. They have since said it would be covered under warranty. That was on May 29, 1997. I have still not received a credit. Thanks Spinergy, I really need more intrest charges. You can check out my story @ www.linkline.com/personal/rusty, click on the Spinergy button. | Overall Rating: |

I got my these wheels a little more than 2 months now and after riding hard in a daily basis I can only said:these wheels are out of this world! I got a sweet deal on a late '96 model and this babies are all I was hoping for: no maintenance, light. no taco spokes...... but most of all no more trips to my LBS for the big T. To top it all they are light and awesome looking! Untill this day have not experienced uneven braking whatsoever, actually I stop now better than ever. One thing for sure is that this babies need TLC, thus a thorough cleaning after long rides will make last forever. I waxed mine a couple of times and they look just out the shop. I travel a lot and have pretty much done everything with these wheels so far, although I must admit I'not a nutty downhiller. My thing is kicking b... up hill and on technical trail (up and down); therefore I think under these or similar conditions there is absolutely no better value for your hard earned buck. I've recently got the new Spinergy Super Stiff (the red ones) and I already have a problem: UNEVEN BRAKING. The problem is on both sets. I got quite pissed and told the dealer that I wanted to deliver the sets in for replacement. They where on my side, but the company that import the wheelsets to Norway was of another opinion. They first said they would replace the rear set, but then they refused to do it. They said the reason for uneven braking was that I had dirty brakingpads. I didn't beleve them, but they rinsed the pads and the rear wheelset and bingo: no more uneven braking. But I still have the problem on the front set even after rinsing. But apart from that I like them. They look neat, it feels nice to ride them, they flex very little sideways and their lightness is stunning. But on my first ride I was caught by heavy winds that almost blew me off the road. So you have to take an extra grip on your bar riding in windy weather. | Overall Rating: |

True, they do flex a little bit, which is noticable when you first ride them, but after a week of riding them you don't even notice it. On windy days though, watch out for big gusts, you better hold on to the handlebar tight or it will blow you over! Other than that, these are probably one of the best investments I've made.
