Date Reviewed: September 8, 2009
Favorite Trail:Any hardpack
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $800.00
Purchased At:Ridleys Cycle
Strengths:I bought these wheels in 1998. In 11 years I have only broken one spoke nipple! I took it to my LBS and they gave me a similar nipple which I had to file down a bit to fit. Now its September 2009 and these wheels are as true as they day I bought them, and they have never been apart or serviced. I abused them quite a bit in the first few years I had them, doing a lot of jumps and drop offs. Now I take care of them because I know I could not replace them or get them serviced. It's a shame because these are beautiful wheels. Just the attention they get from everyone was worth the price. They are flashy :)
Weaknesses:They were expensive!
Similar Products Used:Nothing compared to this.
Bike Setup:Giant CU92 hardtail, sid team fork, xtr v brakes, thompson seatpost/stem, Italia gel flight seat, xt hollowtech crankset, specialized team tires, original LX derailleurs
Bottom Line:I really don't understand the people who claim these wheels are problematic. I think they must have seriously abused their wheels to have had such problems with them. If you're doing six foot drops like this one guy wrote, then what do you expect? If you pay huge money for anything, you have to take care of it.

Over 6 years of racing I never had to touch them. How many wheels have you all went through in that time, I can't believe the negitive remarks on these wheels. Spinergy Rocks!!!!

Bottom Line:OK, I fell for the cool looking composite wheel syndrome. They are good looking, and they have'nt blown up or broke---but you'd better be knowledgeable enough mechanically to true them freqently or pay someone for it. I've also come to the conclusion that it just does'nt make sense to spend $500 on a set of wheels this heavy--you still have to pedal the bike up hills. Stay with an XTR/517 Mavic 895 gram rear wheel, and someone else's 675-730 gram front wheel--like Cane Creek or Mavic. The XTR/Mavic combo is the best for the money out there. The 6-blade Spinergy is not a bad wheel, but I've learned my lesson.

Bottom Line:I owned these rims for a little over 2 months when I realized that the front rim was dished. It wasn't dramatic, but just enough to bother me. Of course I put on XT V-brakes at the same time, so I didn't realize they were off, since I set up the brakes for the wheels at the same time.I bought the tool to wrench on the wheels, and before I even came close to undisking the wheels, the damned truing bolt broke right off of the wheel. I took them back to the shop to have them repaired, and was told that they are no longer being made! I traded up for ceramic Spins and am much happier!

SPINERGY WHEELS. We have been running a set of these on a hard tail for six months and after three had to replace the freehubbody. Found it hard to get spares even working in the bike trade. The wheel has finally given up with all the carbon splitting and the rim collapsed. One thing for them though no matter how many dings the rim got it stayed true. Tried to get a replacement for the wheel and Uk importer was not very helpfull. endedup being cheaper to buy the six spoke wheel rather than get a replacement as they have stopped making the wheels. So what happens when this one goes? I think i will try a pair of the new spoks on a full sus especially if they are disc compatable.

Just the facts. Shortly after I purchased this wheelset (3-4 months) I had to replace the freehub body. Now 1 of the front spokes busted and a nipple snapped on the rear wheel. I also can not count the numerous times they have had to be tightened/trued. These wheels have cost me a small fortune in repairs alone. I had better luck with wheels that cost less than half of the price of these wheels. I am now in the process of calling Spinergy to see if they can help me in any way. I almost forgot to mention that the rear hub keeps losening up causing alot of play in the rear wheel after several times at the LBS to have that fixed too. Ill soon submit another review on Spinergy's customer service. I strongly believe you can save yourself a ton of headaches with a different wheelset.

Disappointing. Bought these because they looked cool in the first instance, seduced by the technical copy in the second. Initially they were good, a little heavy but so what, then DING, a bent rear rim. No problem send them back to the states for a new rim, a lot of money but hey, these are expensive wheels. I was a little put out when my dealer told me these were discontinued. Why? Have Spinergy contacted me to explain whats going on ? nope. My dealer has offered a refund against the damaged wheel but not the full wheelset. I now have a redundant front wheel and a bill for a new wheelset. What shall I choose? SPOX? No chance. I work at a bike shop so I got these at cost for $200.00, thank god they suck they first ride I had to tighten the rear hub. A week later I did some wet riding and the bearing froze up. The hubs were covered under warranty but my shop had to buy a special bearing puller. They come out of true often even with the 1 to 2 milmeter flex recommended. My shop got four pairs in and three of the pairs had bad welds. The only good weld pair I took but had to true them first. I am now only using them for road. I will stick to my 517 for rough trails

I bought my spinergy roks xe's one at a time. I was riding with just the rear wheel for a few weeks and had no problems. So I was real happy when I got the front one. It also looked better. I've been riding both for about two weeks and the only thing I've noticed is two small dents on one of my front blades probably from rocks and there are plenty more where I live. The front wheel is also a little out of true and I am not sure if the people at the place where I bought them are experts at truing these wheels. So I'm looking for an expert so if anyone knows a place I can take them in the phoenix area please email me at azpgofast@aol.com. Once I get them trued I'm going to start hitting the trails. So far so good!

Bottom Line:

After reading many reviews from lots of people it leaves me asking one question. If you like your crossmax and mavic 517's so much, then why did you buy these wheels? I bought mine because they looked solid, and I needed a durable set of wheels to crossover to the road for training. I researched the weight and availability of spare parts before I bought them. People must have tons of money to go out and buy stuff they know nothing about. I weigh 190 pounds, and ride them with Fat Boy tires at 95 PSI on the road. Even with the rough roads around here I don't have to true them. If you get the tension right the wheels will stay true. That means take them to a shop that knows what the are doing and has worked them before, not the lbs that says they can do it(b.s. being the key phrase here). The biggest advantage these wheels offer me is the fact they are heavy. I train with them on the road about 90 miles a week, so when I do switch to my lightweight mountain wheels, I feel like I am flying. Try it you will be amazed what dropping two pounds from your training wheels to your mountain wheels will do. To put it simple, don't buy what you think looks cool just because it looks cool, unless you just have money to burn.

Bottom Line:

Here's what's up with these wheels. If you bought them pre-spring 1998 they are a total piece of shit. The spokes break due to a poorly designed (cheap-ass nipple) and they just don't hold up to any long term abuse. If you got in late production(the date is stickerd on the wheel) they went with a different nipple from another company and the wheels are totally better=more durable. The wheels are the best looking around and if you got them manufactured late spring or after and don't mind a little extra weight they are a good wheel. If you gott'em before spring when they were hot and most people bought them sorry but you lose. They are proned to fail. If I were anyone unless you get a super deal go with xtr or xt on mavic 217 or 517. You can't beat them for the price, ride, dependability and quality.

Bottom Line:

Just purchased these wheels 1 month ago. I've raced once and trained a lot since then. The rims have numerous dents (from rocks I suppose). I flatted and hit a rock bending a section of the lip of the rim completely over (which I straightened with a wrench causing the ceramic coating to chip off in places which really helps my brake pads wear off like crazy). And on top of all other mishaps, terrible noise emissions were coming from my front wheel, but tensioning the spokes (after waiting 2 weeks for a spinergy spoke wrench to arrive) took care of that. Just peachy, and they weight a lot more than crossmax, I really made the wrong decision in buying these wheels. If a spoke breaks, screw it, I'm buying a normal wheel, forget this spinergy schie§.

STILL WAITING, I cannot believe this Company, or is it a company? I had some friends go to the bike show in Las Vagas a couple weeks ago. They 'talked' with Spinergy (if anyone has ever had to deal with Spinergy they know this is very rare) They are no longer making these wheels. After one year they have dropped them all together from what the guy at the booth said. Hmmm... I wonder if these wheels had some serious problem??? The people at Spinergy would never let you know there is. I have never had to deal with a more shitty company in my life. I am now coming up on three months of calling, complaining, yelling...will they ever simply send another spoke half?? I don't know...If people would give me other sites that have reviews on them please e-mail the addresses to me (jfetters@worldnet.att.net) I would like to post a review to as many places as I can. These Spinergy Roks XE's suck big time. In two months I've had to tighten the spokes on my rear wheel already twice. (The inexpensive original rims that came with my bike have lasted for 2 years without any serious maintenance, and they are still OK) For a supposedly low maintenance wheel, the Roks XE's are an incredible amount of work, since you have to remove your tire and rim liner before you can tighten the spokes. They still creak and groan and clatter. Rims are cheaply made too. Seams! Worst of all, is the complete lack of any support by Spinergy. There is a complete lack of interest altogether. Virtually impossible to get through to them. All in all I am extremely disappointed with these wheels, no, absolutely disgusted is a better description. If it was possible to rate them a zero I would. DO NOT BUY THIS CRAP!!!

Wow, it sure seems like these wheels are getting mixed reviews...
I purchased the rear XE wheel a few months ago after beating the shit out of Mavic 217 w/ XT Hub combination (my second wheelset in a year, I beat the shit out of some Sun CR-18 w/ LX hubs a year ago). Anyway, I purchased the wheel for a few reasons:
a) strength
b) need truing less often
c) looks
The rear wheel has held up pretty well, I must say. I've given it quite a beating and it still rides like a dream. No damage anywhere, and I've only had them trued once (which they recommend after riding them a bit). It's definately a solid wheel... I totally biffed on this 5' drop off (I ride a hard tail) and landed at a horrible angle but the wheel was fine... I was definately impressed. I've since ordered the front wheel (I'm still running my 217/XT front) and am eagerly awaiting its arrival. I'm 140 pounds and these wheels are great for my aggressive downhill action and the jumps/drop offs that I do. The only thing that bugs me is the weight, but what's a pound really matter?

! I've broken the nipples on rear spokes twice already
!how goooshey they get when the blades lose tension
!the weight...they're kewl, but face it crosslands are > 1 lbs. lighter

I was thinking about an upgrade as I have a pair of original 4 spokes from '96 that are completely out of true - from 2 years normal riding. So out of true, that I can barely get my v-brakes to be effective. I actually liked them until they just started to wear out. Pretty short life expectancy.I thought since Spinergy is a cool, successful company that I could probably trade them in at a great rate, as they would want to keep their cool, successful (I am 32 and have worked in the systems consulting business for 10 years) customers happy so they buy more Spinergy products and get their successful friends and riding buddies to too - but no way. Spinergy wants you to either buy the new set of 6 spokes, or buy replacement 4 spoke wheels for basically full price - which is MORE than the new 6 spoked wheels cost.I don't even have an issue with the cost so much as I am disgusted with the principle of poor customer service. I got the run-around. I will probably buy Mavic CrossMax's or CrossLands at this point - I heard Mavic was very patient getting their hub problems straightened out from one of my riding buddies...

They are stong as hell and fairly light but I still like my mavic 517 wheelset with gt hubs allot better. I like the mavics better because their lighter and almost as stong and plus the gt hubs are better than the ones on the spinergy's and even better than xtr's. The spinergy's presta valve extension sux too because it rattles and to pump up your tire you have to leave the valve unscrewed and air can escape. But these wheels are great when you have them set up right which I finally got to.

The wheels have held up very well with no real problems. I have trued them once after the first few rides, and set the wheel bearing adjustment once. They are quite a bit easier to true than regular wheelsets for sure. I bought a spare spoke set (paranoia I guess) but even after rock hits and stick jams I can see no damage or even marks on the blades. I dont like the extended presta stem system they use and have come up with my own system to overcome that. So far, so good....nice wheels.

I do a lot of technical New England East Coast style riding. Regular rims just couldn't hack it. In addition I wieght a buck eighty and ride an aluminum hardtail. Spinergy's are just enough to take the edge off the ride. You have to use the stiffeners or else the wheel is way to soft and will flex all over the place. Now, heres the downside I have gone through SIX pairs in the last three years. Yeah that's right I have to replace them twice a year. I have had problems from rim separation, warped rims, and most commonly separated hubs. I have ripped the hub out of the wheel at least four times. I'm not a big guy, I don't mash the gears and I don't beat on the wheels, but the bonding around the rear hub keeps breaking down. Spinergy used to be a royal pain in the @ss to deal with. Lately, they have been much better at addressing the problems. They told me that on the 98 wheels they have perfected the bonding problem. I doubt it, but we'll see. Either way, they give an AWESOME ride (when they're working). So the ride gets five chilis, but the hassel of dealing with separated hubs subtracts two chilis.

After the first ride, Awesome. I bought these wheels for looks and because I was tired of truing my rear wheel every couple of downhill blazes. I don't know about the truing part yet, but the have pinpoint steering and control. My tires felt better planted. I have a 1997 Specialized FSR full suspension bike. These wheels feel lighter than the original Mavics. There bump asorbing qualities where an added benefit and even enhanced the performance of the best full suspension bike made. And, they are the best looking wheels on the market.

Stunning looks, strong, very quiet, and pure heaven on long punishing rides.I had to true wheels and adjust bearings(rear wheel) upon delivery, but they have worked flawlessly since that time. My only gripe is the welded seam on the rim. Can be noticeable during light braking. Complained about untrue wheels and Spinergy sent me a wrench for free. Rep was very helpful and courteous. I love these wheels, so close to 5 stars. To reach perfection, they must bump up the quality control(rim tolerance, factory adjustments)another step. Still, very nice wheels indeed!

At 235 lbs., I've destroyed several custom wheelsets. So, I thought I'd try the '98 Spinergys. After torturing them in Ocala's quarries, Tsali, Conyers, etc... they're still straight. I've had them several months and put hundreds of on/off road miles on them. I'm completely happy with them. They offer a very comfortable ride, no noise. You can pick up a spoke wrench/nut driver at any hardware store.

Got these wheel about 2 months ago, ride them almost daily and found they are terrific. They are stiff laterally but take up a lot of roughness from trail especially when riding a hardtail. They look cool for certain and I think they are priced reasonably. I had to true them after a few rides and they seem to be holding up well.

Bottom Line:

I have had these a few weeks and have hit some of the roughest trails out here. These wheels are stiff, no lateral flex and light (compared to what I had LX's at 4.1 lbs.) these come in at 4.3 lbs., not much of a differnece in weight. The Spins are 4.8 (1/2 lb heavier). You have to jump to the $700 crossmax to be at 3.3 lbs (and their not getting very good reviews here at MTBR.com) I got my pair from one of the best mail order bike shops, Bike World (see reviews) they sold for $70 less than anyyone elses $499.99 I noticed better breaking performance with XT V's and none of the squeals some have had. At higher speeds on the downhill, these seem to slice through the air. I Obviously can't report on Long term reliablity yet. But there looks are a 5 smoker!

I just bought the rear one. I used it once, enough to find it pretty stiff and strong. I can't compare it with any other (ex: Spins) 'cause I have not ridden any other tri-spoked wheels. One think that I just don't get is the design for truing. You have to take the whole tire and tube to do this. Imagine if you have to true it during a race...@#$%%^*&(&^%. Besides this, it seems like a bomb proof wheel and it looks way cool on the bike. The rest of the specs (hub, c/f spokes etc..) I'll have to ride it more to comment. I'll give it 4 starts because of the stupid truing design.

Having been using the spinergy's for the last 3 months. Found them very good.
Not as hard riding as the spins wheels. The blades came loose after a couple of weeks riding but once tension been fine since then. Good wheels to hammer on the rough stuff. The weight of the wheels dont bother me at all, not much difference to a standard set of wheels anyway.
