Favorite Trail:Sycamore Canyon
Duration Product Used:6 months
Purchased At:friend gave them to me
Strengths:Light, easy to use, no messy glue, no drying time, small size
Weaknesses:none for me, these are great!
Similar Products Used:Rubber patches with vulcanizing glue
Bike Setup:Used with mountain and road tires from 40-125 psi
Bottom Line:At first, I thought these patches were terrible and leaky. Then, I read the instructions closely. They say to roll the tube and patch between or fingers after application. This step makes a really tight seal over the hole. Since I've been doing that, they've made my tubes as good as new.
I even use them on my road bike now. Even the high pressures I put in those tubes won't make them leak.

Bottom Line:There are those who gripe about the people who made bad reviews on SpeedPatch. To those defending this product, what the heck is the use of this product if it is only a TEMPORARY fix? Nevermind if it is suppose to get you home. I would rather have a patch that would get me home AND be a permanent solution to my flat tire. Better that than spend $ on another tube.

Price Paid: $3.00
Purchased At:Snyders Bicycle Shop
Strengths:They work
Weaknesses:none
Similar Products Used:Park-no problems with them either.
Bike Setup:road bike with 130psi tires
Bottom Line:I just cannot figure out the complaints in regards to these Speed patches! I started using them about 5 to 6 years ago and never had one failure and they lasted. This is a MTB tire review where most MT bikes run lower pressure than road bike and yet they work for this application too. You do have to clean and sand the tube just as you would for a normal patch before you apply. Look you all, I do not race professionally, I am not a bike mechanic or work in a bike shop, I'm just a frickin normal guy that rides for fitness. But after moving to the area I now live in I began to experience on the average of 4 flats a week and started to use the Speed Patch; I have now used at least 80 of these patches and never had one fail, and I don't use them as temporarily fixes-they are permanent and even work of seams!!!

Favorite Trail:Enchanted Forest
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:Quicker and less messy than regular patches
Allows you to finish the ride (in some cases)
Weaknesses:Fails either immediately or after a few rides
Similar Products Used:regular patches
Bottom Line:I bought speed patches about 3 years ago, and after several failures, I gave up and went back to regular patches which work great for me.
Last month in Moab, a friend tried using a Speed Patch. I figured maybe they had solved the problems from 3 years ago. We were making jokes about the "3 step speed patch installation method" - 1) Install Speed Patch 2) Take off speed patch because it leaks 3) Use regular patch to fix the hole. Sure enough, the Speed patch leaked shortly after the guy pumped up the tire, and he then used a regular patch.

Bottom Line:Before I left So. Cal. to England, my local bike shop recommended the pre-glue "speed patch." I had never used one before and was reluctant. But the shop owner told me that he had used it for many years and was very happy with it.

At any rate, I went biking in the countryside last weekend, and got both my bike tires flatted when crossing a dense woody path. I replaced one with a spare and patched the other using the "speed patch" following the simple instructions behind the tin box. Less than 30 minutes, the patched tire flat again. Like most people I cursed the "speed patch," and used my last spare to put me back on the road.

After returning home, I was curious about the patch because it seemed to be firmly glued to the tube when I examined it during the replacement. I filled the air into the patched tube then submerged it into a bucket of water inch-by-inch. I was surprised that the patch was OKAY! It took me another 20 minutes before I found the second hole that was so tiny unless I squeezed very hard and looked the bubbles extremely careful, I would miss it. I patched the second hole and the first flat tube with the "speed patches" and put them back on my bike. Since then both tubes have been working just like new.

So, either the tube had two holes when it went flat the first time, or it got the second hole after I patched it.

My patches have been sitting in my bike bag for at least two years. I cleaned the puncture with spit, sanded well, wiped it off again, and kneaded the patch in place with my thumbs, then remounted the tire. I did not rolll the patch as suggested in the instructions. Maybe these patches need a thin, pliable tube to work well, like the standard Specialized. Maybe others have not checked for multiple punctures. Who knows.....

I really like these things and hate to see the bad wrap that they get and would love to see these things out of the bad wrap list that they are in. MY personal opinion of them began in my first year of racing when I recieved my first Norba Grab Bag. There they were a six pack of black squares. I used them they didn't work, I used them more they didn't work! Then I went do and met the man that did it all. He showed me the SECRET! and it has never left me flat again. He showed me that you have to SCUFF the tube until it was a dark matte balck, then you place the patch on there and stretch the patch from opposite corners just like you do on a normal patch to get the plastic cellophane strip off. Voila!!! Patched.

It is interesting to see the how divided the population is on this product. I know these patches work great when applied as directed. Even I had enough sense to double up the patch if it's a big hole you are trying to patch. I think all the one chili pepper reviews show us how many folks have gotten off the path of common sense and onto the path of whining about their sore feet.Take a look at the other end of the spectrum. Five Chili Peppers awarded to speed patch from real riders. They got it right; it worked fine with a little common sense. My story is as follows: Riding to work and back on an ongoing basis left me with a large puncture. I layered two speed patches and kept riding. Months went by and the little temp patches were still going strong.Today those patches are still on my tube, on my bike. Go figure. I say, roast five chili's and I'd roast more if it were an option.Oh yeah, the tin packaging deserves it's own five chili's!

After using Speed Patches for the past two years I only have rave reviews for it. Riding Mountian Bikes professionally for the past two years I have been given every patch imaginable in my NORBA grab bags. My first real situation with the use of Speed Patches occured at the BikeTrial World Championships at Lake Tahoe. There at the most inopportune time was a five foot boulder in my way and hit it, pinching the tube. Damn, a FLATTTT! I slowly pulled out my Speed Patches and got to work on both of my holes in the snakebiten tube. After finishing my wonderful patching job, I was on the move again to finish in the top ten. My suggestions to those that feel Speed Patches suck, they don't! 1. Scuff the tube until the area becomes a dark matte black. 2. Take OFF you gloves or clean your finger tips on your jersey/shorts. 3. Peel off the backing to the patch and place over area. IMPORTANT!!!
Pinch the patch from opposite sides and then rotate 90 degrees and repeat the process of pinching. DoneTip to the wiser: Keep it real, keep it clean, and leave the sticky side down, oh and don't touch the area to be patched!Hint: If you met the man behind Speed Patch, heard his trials and tribulations, you would use no other patch kits. Bought some of these patches hoping that they would bail me out sometime when I needed it most. I got stuck with a flat at the Berkeley BART station trying to get home, used a Speed Patch to at least make it the 1.5 miles to get home and the damn thing wouldn't even hold. I wouldn't trust these things to patch a vinyl beach ball, much less a tire. Boogers probably work better than these things, haven't tried it yet but I'll give my review on that and comparisons to Speed Patch later. About the only good thing about this product is it sometimes comes in a small round tin with a kinda cool graphic of a guru on the front. My suggestion: spend the three bucks, chuck the patches inside, and keep the tin to store your stash. That's what I did. I'll give this product two stars for the packaging that keeps my Ganja from getting crushed. From now on, I'll keep a spare tube handy.

OK people, lets get something strait.
-First of all, when you go on a ride, bring a spare tube poindexter.
-Second, Speedpatches are not permanent patches! They are made so you can get home.
-3rd, you are to put the patch on the tube and then inflate it when it's inside the bloody tire! This way, the patch is held in place mainly by the pressure, like it's supposed to!
-Speed patches are made to patch leaks, not holes.
-And lastly, people are talking of all these green, and white, etc... speedpatches only come in black! So, before you put in another cranky review, realized that this is a patch, OK?
They work great!

Everyone must use the brand name Speed Patch. The work outstanding. I've used about 10 in the last 6 months and every one worked great. It is amazing I currently have 5 patches on my rear tire and 3 on my front and the tubes hold air like regular tubes. The patches even work after repeated inflations and deflations as shown by the fact that I have more than one on each tube. Those other glueless patches on the market don't work, like Park, Scabs, Innovations, and so on. The adhesives on these copycat brands work for a couple days and then fail. INSIDE EVERY SPEED PATCH BOX IS A TEENY WEENY PATCH OF SAND PAPER. YOU REALLY NEED TO ROUGH UP THE SURFACE OF YOUR RUBBER FOR THE APPLICATION TO BE TACKY ENOUGH TO STICK.

I've used them twice and they are still holding air after two weeks. Usually when I get a flat my patch glue has dried up, so it's great having these for just in case. clean the tire really well before using!

Bottom Line:

I got a pack of these last year and slowly went through an entire season
of flats without a single patch holding air. Every time I punctured
I gave the Clueless Patches a fair shot, only to have the &#@! thing
leak like a seive.Stick with vulcanizing patches. Clueless patches simply DO NOT
work. If you want to save time in a race, carry a spare tube.

I had a flat in a triathlon and the glueless patch DID NOT hold. The kit was
year old so maybe that had something to do with it.

Bottom Line:

I ride a fair amount both on and off road and I sometimes get several flats per ride
(the bull thorns are everywhere in Santa Barbara, even on the tarmac). I purchased
a couple of Speed Patch kits from a mail order outfit because I thought that the idea
of a glueless patch was a great idea (no glue to dry out, no waiting for the glue to
dry before applying the patch, etc) and they were a bit less expensive than the
Park patch kit.

The first time I tried a Speed Patch if wouldn't stay on the tube and I had to use my
friend's traditional patch. The next time I had a flat I was alone and the patches
again failed to stick to the tube so I had to use my spare tube, realizing if I got
another flat I was hosed. Yes, I followed the directions very precisely and they
still didn't work.

I ended up just throwing them away, as they were more than useless, they could be
a liability if they are the only patches available and they don't work. The thought
of a long walk out of the mountains is not my idea of fun!

I ended up buying the Parks and I would recommend that you do the same if you
want to use glueless patches. They may cost a bit more but they work every time
and are smaller and lighter than anything else available.

Bottom Line:

Doesn't stick that well. The thicker, black patch seems to separate quickly and if you're luck it'll stay if you quickly put it in the tire and inflate. Not worth it. Get the Parks.

A lifesaver a must have and it is real easy
to put on because it is a glueless patch kit.
