$2900.00 | | Purchased At: | Flying Fish Bikes | | Strengths: | Very quick climber with minimal effort (you'll win every climb vs FS), Turns on a dime, Agressive forward riding geometry. | | Weaknesses: | A bit heavy for a racer without significant component upgradeds and decents can be rough at time. The suspension adjust takes time to dial it in just right. | | Similar Products Used: | Top Fuel EX | | Bike Setup: | Upgraded to XTR Crank, XTR Front D, XO Rear D, XO Shifters, XTR Cassette/Chain, Avid Elixir CR Brakes, Chris King Hubs, DT Swiss Rims, Sella Italia Saddle, Easton Monkeylite Bar, Chris Kink Headset, Thompson Elite Post, Egg Beater Ti Pedals, Fox F100RLC Fork | | Bottom Line: | With proper upgrades, this bike can compete with the best racers (I've placed 1st-3rd in many local races on this machine). A good rider should excel on climbs and remain competitive on downhills. Yes, this bike is a bit rough on technical decents and the agressive front forward geometry allows for easy endos on rough drop transitions. If you are looking for a fast bike for trail riding...get it. If your focus on more on comfort and cruising, get a trail bike with more suspension and easier geometry.
Do consider additional upgrades to lighten the bike and provide a more solid foundation. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

The variable quick adjust front shock is the bomb. | | Weaknesses: | It took about 4 tries to get the suspension set up just right.
The bike shop I bought it at was not really very helpful with

$2400.00 | | Strengths: | Climbs like a HT, single track, fire rosd...a VERY fast bike for any of these. Pretty light for a FSR. A couple of fairly inexpensive upgrades put it st 25 lbs. I will be racing this bike. BTW retail for the Expert model is $3300 so I got a pretty good deal. | | Weaknesses: | Rocky downhills, drop offs...but I didn't buy this bike for that. | | Similar Products Used: | GT hard tail, Lightspeed HT and other HTs. I tested the Specialized stumpy with more travel and thats a great bike if you want a more plush ride, but if you want to go fast and do some racing as well, the Epic is the way to go. | | Bike Setup: | It is the stock Expert with these upgrades:
S-works carbon bar, carbon stem, Race face carbon post, Ti saddle(free!), spd pedals (exchanged for crank bros), XT cassete and frt. derailleur. I exchanged all these out at the shop when I bought it and paid an extra $250. | | Bottom Line: | If you want really plush, and like to go real big on the jumps/drop offs, get something else. I went from a HT with 2" front travel to 4" front and back, so to me its a huge difference. If you ride alot of xc roads, fast single track and like to climb, and possibly do some racing, this bike is awesome! The rear locks out when it is supposed to and activates when its supposed to...everything that Specialized said it would do. And did I mention that it is a very fast bike!? | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$2000.00 | | Strengths: | Very light for the price, great components, professional build quality, super fast on climbing and very controlled on the rough decents. switchbacks are a breeze with the light weight and efficient tracking. when you hit a hill the brain does exactly what its supposed to and sends your power to the ground. and did i mention that the sram drivetrain has prompted me to say goodbye to shimano for good. | | Weaknesses: | Brakes are pretty mehh for the price. at 2 thousand bucks they could have dropped a pinch more on better calipers. The only other weakness isnt really a weakness at all as much as its an observation.... the geometry of this bike is very fast and xc race oriented. however if some of those slow and steep tech sections are something that you ride often you might want to look elsewhere like the fsrxc. I ride this bike in Palos, il alot and it just flies on decents and climbs alike. but when i encountered those steep technical drops it is downright scary. my old fisher genesis frame was able to have the front wheel go down an 18 inch drop barely moving and roll out of it. on the epic the geometry sent me over the bars and into a very painful situation resulting in 3 weeks of not walking right. im not blaming the bike but i am trying to state the purpose. this bike has geometry best suited for fast xc and medium trail riding. anything that gets steep though is not appropriate for this frame. | | Similar Products Used: | i had looked at giant (generic), trek(shocking anyone buys them), fisher (same as trek), cannondale (nice but alot of cash). | | Bike Setup: | Eggbeaters, top of the line avid levers and brakes, XTR front hub, mavic rim, xt rear hub, mavic rim. | | Bottom Line: | A superfast bike that got me off of hardtails with the precision of the brain. You can pace roadies while on your way to the trail or bomb down some nasty rock gardens. Just know that it is leaning to the xc side of things and not so far to the all mountain. Although slower the stumpy FS is probably better suited to a rough trail ride. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1800.00 | | Purchased At: | chicago | | Strengths: | It climbs better than a soft tail, and descends better than a hard tail. On dry terrain this thing is fast. | | Weaknesses: | It doesn't climb as well as hard tail nor descend as well as a soft tail. It does not like mud at all. I do not know if it is the tires or what, but this thing slides everywhere in the mud. | | Bike Setup: | Stock other than Avid Juicy 5's. | | Bottom Line: | This is a great bike. I have had this bike since January and have ridden it on single track rides daily. It stands up to the punishment expect for the chain. I do not understand why I have broken 4 chains, but I have. Upgrade the breaks to a disc and you have a great bike. It is a better fit for dry conditions and does not respond too well to mud.
My biggest complaint is the cost without disk breaks. The lack of disc breaks make this bike a little over priced. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

It is what it is! | | Weaknesses: | None | | Bottom Line: | This is a very smart bicycle. If you want a fast riding XC bike, this is it. I have been addicted to my Bontrager Race for the last 9 years. I really haven't gotten excited over buying a new bike up until I saw the Epic's. It does everything I love about my agile, great climbing bonty and so much more. It climbs like a goat, steers precisely, and descends better than any hardtail.
Here is the deal, imagine you are about an hour into your ride, your legs are warm, you feel strong. You have just gone down a sweet, fun downhill. You notice a short steep hill ahead oh you. Keeping your momentum, you click into the proper gear, grab the bar ends, stand up and CRANK!, and unload your power to the bike. The rear end responds by locking to the trail and rocketing up the hill. Roots, rocks, ruts, etc., be damned as the brain and shock soak them up effortlessly, keeping you planted and accellerating up the hill. You crest the climb, put both cranks horizontal to the soil, and enjoy another fun downhill, as the suspension soaks up more terrain, smooth, fast and efficiently.
This bike is all about going fast, pedaling hard, and being efficient. Its everything you love about a hardtail, and more, no comprimises. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1800.00 | | Strengths: | The suspension and brain technology is carried through from the cheapest to most exspensive model. Specialized just makes great bikes and this is one of them, I have found the brain techonology to work great for my style of riding. Bike also comes ready for disc brakes, all you need to add is the calipers and discs. Its an easy upgrade for the rim version. | | Weaknesses: | Your paying for the brain technology, poor rear hubs, even FSR's come with disc brakes now, wasnt crazy about the Truvante bottom bracket and crank. | | Similar Products Used: | None | | Bike Setup: | Added my old Thomson stem and seat post for vanity reasons. Added an XT crank and plan to upgrade the rear hub to something better. Added avid mecahnical brakes, was an easy upgrade because the wheels and levers were disc compatible. | | Bottom Line: | Love the bike, it seemed to help my riding a lot. Even if it doesnt give the cushiest ride, its much better than a straight hard tail for a beginner or intermediate level rider.
Plan on upgrading some parts on the entry level models. If you do your own work, you can find some deals on ebay and will have a high level bike in no time. Be aware; you need a setback seat post to match specialized own model if you upgrade, and the L/XL sizes use a larger rotor in the front. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1895.00 | | Purchased At: | Hudson Trail Outfitters | | Strengths: | Brain Fade rear suspension, FSR, free chainstay protector (free stuff is always nice) | | Weaknesses: | a bit on the heavy side for a cross country bike. frame itself flexes considerably side to side in the pivots. | | Similar Products Used: | alot of others, i am a bike mechanic | | Bike Setup: | Epic frame, XT/XTR gruppo, Monkey lite carbon bar, Cane Creek Zonos disc carbon wheels, tubless tires, rock shox reba world cup, dual control levers are the way to go. a bunch of other upgrades. This review is for the FRAME ONLY. | | Bottom Line: | First off, this review is for the 2006 frame only, which is the same on all 06 models unless you get the s-works carbon model. Second off, if your bikes chain is slipping or if there is rubbing somewhere, take it back to your shop and get it tuned! All cables stretch within the first 20-50 miles of riding and causes everything to go out of tune! If you are getting a lot of chain suck, learn to shift while going uphill. The best derailers will do that if you shift under all that force. There is no need to ever rate a bike poorly because you rode an out of tune bike or rode like a teen driving a Ferrari. That’s sounds like a component problem, not a complete bike/frameset problem.
On to the review- I've ridden this bike for nearly a year now and all I can say is WOW. I’m 190-200 lbs, a fatty for cross country, so my bike does take a beating. Yet there is no up and down flex in the suspension on climbs because of the Brain Fade shock. The fact that you can control the threshold of the shock made it worth shelling out 1895 for the complete bike just so I could have the frame. I feel as if Specialized’s FSR design is one of the best suspension designs on the market. The best as far as cross country suspension goes. When you do get the hits, the shock activates and you get more tire to the dirt for maximum efficiency downhill as well as locked out going up hill. My friends noticed considerable side to side flex of the frame at the pivots. I hooked it up to a trainer and looked in the mirror. It looked like about 20-40mm side to side flex, and the pivots are not loose. I am a big guy though; you weigh-nothings shouldn’t feel anything.
This bike deserves an overall 5, but 4 for value. You cannot buy just the frameset, which is what I was looking for. Specialized will only get you a frame if you break yours under normal conditions. If you want just the frameset, you would have to buy the $3500 carbon s-works version, which no shop has the frameset on their floor.
If you can shell out the cash, I highly recommend this bike for cross country riders that don't want to be bounced down technical sections because they couldn't keep your tire in the dirt. I think even trail riders could appreciate this frameset.

I bought DT-swiss 4,1 and 240s, Nobby Nick 2,1, and Magura Marta SL 180/160 (www.hibike.de!!).
| | Bottom Line: | The Epic Marathon seemed to be my dreambike. I owned a Stumpjumper with all the proper upgrades. The normal price would be apr. Euro 3900,- for the Epic Marathon. I've managed to save apr. Euro 1500,- by bying some new components through the internet and using some 'old' components from the stumjumper. Now I've got an Epic that is not beautiful black, instead it's less beautiful white; but it is even slightly lighter and better equipped than the original Epic Marathon. It's a great improvement for those who have a fast hardtail already but are looking for a full suspension that's light and faster under all conditions (except hardcore enduro and downhill); for racing, marathons and fast tours. No more backpains, no more fatigue. On the roughest washboards and downhills I can stay in the saddle at all time (or at least much longer), I keep on pedalling and accelarating, instead of standing on the pedals, worrying about how to keep the bike under control. The 'brain fade' does it all, from hardtail firm tot trail tune plush, as promised. So: Topframe and rear suspension, incredible light for this price. A few upgrades and you have a beatifully tuned high end bike. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I saw instant reductions in the time it took to make it up familiar climbs, and the downhills became smooth as silk. No brake jacking, bob, or kickback either. I don't ride real fast or rough so I keep the threshold adjuster on the lightest setting. It carries my 200 pounds easily. I bought this bike as a frame/fork from Gregg's Greenlake in Seattle. After I sold the Fox F80 fork my net cost was $600. A screaming deal for something this nice! I transfered parts from another bike and put an old Axel fork on it for a while just so I could ride it. Then I tried a Black Super Air - not so super. Next up is a Reba 100mm, which I think will finish this awesome bike quite nicely. I can't part with the cash for a F100X, but it would be the logical choice. I followed MBA's recommendation to slow the handling down a bit by using a 100mm fork and I think that was a good decision. It's not twitchy at all now. The only reason I would trade this bike in would be to get the new 100mm rear travel model (I have the 90mm). To be honest, I don't think you'd be able to tell the difference though. The rear shock has performed perfectly and has not given me any trouble after two seasons. I just checked the bearings in the rear linkage and they are still tight and sealed. Rock solid choice from a solid company. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1900.00 | | Purchased At: | Bicycle Warehouse | | Strengths: | Front are rear suspension are great! They are very responsive and have a lot of flexibility to meet indivual needs. Hubs are disc-ready so I won't need to change them when I add some disc brakes. The V-brakes work surprisingly well (I'm coming from disc). | | Weaknesses: | Tires suck. I know I'm not a pro, but tese things slid out in every fast turn I went through. Also the handle bars are shorter and flatter than what I was used to, but I guess they're OK now. | | Similar Products Used: | Raleigh RAM 3.0 was my last bike. When buying this Specialized, I also test-rode the Stuntjumper and the Santa Cruz Juliana and Blur. I also tried a Giant (don't remember the model). | | Bike Setup: | Stock except I put a WTB Moto Raptor 2.2" in front and WTB Weirwolf 2.3" in back. I also ditched the Shimano SPD pedals for my Crank Bros. Candy SL "Egg Beaters." I also put a WTB Gel Pro Saddle on. | | Bottom Line: | This bike has totally changed my riding. It's fast, responsive and affordable. Aside from the pedals (which I already had), I've only put about $100 into this bike to make it exactly what I want. I will probably add some Avid BB7s down the road, but like I said, the stock V-Brakes work really well. If you like technical and challanging climbs, this is your bike; it's light and will climb anything. It's amazing. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1250.00 | | Purchased At: | MACK CYCLES Miami | | Strengths: | This bike is fast, great climber, and responsive. | | Weaknesses: | heavy: stock wheelset is heavy, Shimano 519's are horrible in the mud, hadlebars must be CUT, a lot of chain suck..., the specialized Pro wheels are bad too | | Similar Products Used: | All my other bikes have been HT; Raleighs, treks | | Bike Setup: | bone stock Except for a Demo lite handlebar | | Bottom Line: | I have mixed emotions about this bike. Sometimes it feels spot-on, and sometimes it's so squirly that it makes me nervous. Coming from srtickly HT's, its a great bike to adjust to FS yet I have ridden other FS bikes and they are so much plusher. Though the whole point (of the Brain)is to provide a more ridgid ride & activate only when needed, it sometimes feels like it's active when you dont want it to be and not when you don't. I obviously have not found the right set-up for myself 5'8" 165lbs.
Being as I am preparing to race all of next season (I placed 3rd in my first race yesterday, Stoaked 'bout that!) I do intend on building the bike up. Once i get all the components that I want will I keep w/ the Epic design??? I dont know! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1300.00 | | Purchased At: | Sycamore Cycles | | Strengths: | Fox Fork, Frame, Race Geometry, Climbing, Technical Flats. | | Weaknesses: | Heavy as a brick, Downhills, twisty singletrack, some componets.
| | Similar Products Used: | Kona Mano Mano, hardtails. | | Bike Setup: | Stock W/ Cane Creek Wheels, Tubeless tires, lighter saddle. | | Bottom Line: | You won't fully use this bike untill you get in a race situation. Only at very high speeds does this bike settle into any sort of comfort. Go too slow, and the trail will beat you to death. This bike has a harsh suspension feel, and is anything but plush. That being said, I enjoy having the rear suspension in the later parts of a 3 lap race.
I'm still not sold on the Brain shock, as it does feel slow responding to hits. The brain fade on the "06 models may fix this. The fork (and any other fork made by Fox) is the best on the market.
The bike is heavy for a $2000 race bike, my 19inch weighs 27# w/ ligher stuff on it. As a result, it feels sluggish on tight, twisty singletrack.
This bike is an exellent race bike, and I would recomend it to anyone looking for a extremely fast bike. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$2000.00 | | Purchased At: | Tsuchiya Bike Shop, Japan | | Strengths: | Stable handling, responsive Brain Shock, durable frame, reliable bike. | | Weaknesses: | The frame is a bit on the heavy side. I bought this frame in 2003, but I see that Specialized has taken some grams off over the years. The stock Epic is OK for recreational XC riders. But you'll have to replace almost all moving parts other than the frame to get a more durable and efficient ride. | | Similar Products Used: | Iron Horse | | Bike Setup: | Crossmax XL rim brakes wheelset, Deda 25 Newton stem, Selle Italia SLR seat, Shimano XT Transmission, Shimano M959 pedals | | Bottom Line: | I've been using this bike for almost 2.5 years and it has performed really great. The Brain has pretty much lived up to it's name. Hardtail on flats, Full suspension on rough terrain. Except during the winter when temperatures are down to 0degC, the brain shock does not function as well. Handling has been superb. It has endured varied terrain - from the mountain trails of Kobe, Japan (where I bought it) to the flatter, rough road and cobblestone trails of Belgium (where I am now). I would recommend this bike for those who are thinking of buying it. The only thing I would have done differently is to have bought better components from the start via the higher end Epic models. Since buying the Epic, I've replaced the stock parts with the ones I've mentioned above in bike set-up. Even so, I absolutely like this bike.. and maybe upgrading some parts every now and then was good since I was always looking forward to something new.
Now it's time to send the bike to a Specialized dealer for a frame tune-up/check-up. I've noticed that some of the bolts in rear triangle are less tight than normal, and some creaking in the headset. Well, it has served me well over the years.... maybe it's time I give the bike a little treat :-)

This bike has totally lived up to the hype. The rear suspension is there when you want it and locked out when you don't. I was surprised at how well this bike climbs. I was under the impression that the brain would not open up on slow climbs when you hit rocks and roots but I was wrong. On a long, slow climb I hit a 6 inch root and the shock opened up and allowed me to stay seated and rider over it. Very impressive. I am unable to adequately communicate how impressed I am with this bike. The Fox front shock is absolutely amazing as well. I am also impressed with the XT rear derailleur. I was planning on upgrading immediately to Sram XO all around but I am holding off. the XT is smooth and precise. For the kind of ridding I do (cross country) this is a perfect bike. I have no idea why some one would stay with a hardtail. I am just as fast on the flats and faster on the climbs and the descents. I am loving it!! It is lightweight, responsive and climbs extremely well. For riding the Texas hill country this bike is a great fit. The handling is great, whether you are crawling along or flying down the trail it feels connected and in control. I was skeptical of "Brain" at first. Seems like another gimmic. However, after logging some miles, it really is all that it is advertised to be - a hard tail when you need it and fully compliant when you want it. A great mix. $1600.00 | | Purchased At: | LBS | | Strengths: | Super efficient, light weight for the price. FSR suspension can't be beat. Fox fork is very nice. The whole package is a great value for what you pay. | | Weaknesses: | The "brain" quit working for a few minutes during my second ride, so the shock stayed fully open. Never happened again, so not really a big deal. Would be nice to have more travel, but... | | Similar Products Used: | Stumpjumper FSR, Gary Fisher Cake, Trek Fuel (my other bike is a Fisher hardtail) | | Bike Setup: | Stock w/eggbeaters and shorter stem | | Bottom Line: | This is a great bike for cross-country riding, particularly in the Boise foothills where I ride. I would not, however, recommend it for huckers or any type of aggro riding. The suspension is great--works as advertised with hardtail efficiency until you hit a bump. I bought a medium frame, which has nearly the same top tube and SO as my small Gary Fisher Hardtail, and then threw on a shorter stem to approximate the genesis geometry. This setup is nearly perfect for my riding style. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Ride quality and overall performance is excellent thusfar, IMO. For the record, this is my first MTB with full suspension. The other front- or full-suspension bikes I rode either sapped my energy from pedal-induced bobbing or felt like the forks were cheap, nonadjustable toys.

The brain shock works as advertised! | | Weaknesses: | Stock seatpost creaks while pedaling uphill, Stock front wheel skewer will not stay tight. Stock riser bar very wide. | | Similar Products Used: | This bike is my first full suspension. Demo rode Santa Cruz Blur and 04 Stumpjumper before purchase. | | Bike Setup: | Chris King Hubs on Mavic 819, CK headseat, Thompson seatpost/stem, WTB saddle, Easton low rise bar, XT integrated shifters | | Bottom Line: | After riding a Haro ICS 4.0 for about 4 months, I upgraded to the 04 Epic in January 2004. This bike has been magnificent. The brain shock allows for no-bob riding, and becomes very plush when a bump activates the shock. The front axle skewer would not stay tight.
The upgrades I did to the bike were stictly for performance upgrades and weight savings. The stock parts were all good, except for the creaky seatpost and aforementioned front axle skewer.
The recommended rear shock settings are way incorrect! I ended up using 10lbs less than 1/2 my body weight. The rear shock is VERY sensitive to even the slightest change of air pressure.
The only real problem I encountered in 800 miles of technical XC and fireroad riding was a blown shock while prepping for the Tsali Challenge Triathlon:( The Specialized dealer in Asheville, NC (Liberty Cycles is a class operation) replaced the shock under warranty.
Overall, I am happy with the bike. I sometimes wish for a little more travel (don't we all:), but the only limitiations on the bike has been the rider! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1300.00 | | Purchased At: | Local Shop in Alabama | | Strengths: | The brain is nice. After riding a hardtail for years, this made the ride a much smoother transition. It's a good full-suspension frame for starters and upgradeable if you have the cash and looking to lighten it up. | | Weaknesses: | I'm not too happy with the Specialized Pro tires, it feels like you have less control around fast turns. The riser bars are a few inches wider, which can be a hassle in the Alabama woods. Also, the front-end likes to lift on steep inclines. | | Similar Products Used: | Tested a Stumpjumper FSR | | Bike Setup: | Factory setup, but I've got some Easton handlebars and a Thompson seatpost heading my way via snail-mail. | | Bottom Line: | A little pricey, unless you can get a good deal from your local shop. All in all a good bike. If you currently have a hardtail and are in the market for a full suspension, I suggest you give the Epic a test ride. The brain is quite effective, and I'll admit I was sketchy about it at first since it's such a tiny add-on, but it works.
I took a hard fall on mine today and broke the rapidfire "gear-indicator?" on the handlebar, but the rest stayed intact and it continued to shift fine. So as I sit here, still bleeding from the knees, I can vouch for this fine machine with painful respect and admiration. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1700.00 | | Purchased At: | Plano Cycle and Fitness | | Strengths: | Suspension, dynamics of the bike. | | Weaknesses: | Drivetrain, brakes. | | Bike Setup: | stock | | Bottom Line: | I was asked today in an email if I still felt the same way after a month. So, here's a follow up. I've averaged 3 rides a week, and each ride is at least an hour in duration, sometimes as much as 1.5 hrs. All on singletrack strewn with roots (and the trees), some busted concrete (trail armor), creek whoops, and open hills.
First off, the drivetrain was my largest complaint. After another lengthy session at the LBS, it's much better. There has NOT been another instance of chain suck and only about two intances where the chain jumped off the small ring. There was some minor problems with shifting between rings that I attribute to breaking in of the bike. I tweaked some more on the front derailleur and it's been a while since there have been any problems at all with the drivetrain.
I hit more trees with the bars than I ever did before. The bars are over 3 inches wider. Hack some off the ends, and save your knuckles.
I take root strewn downhill turns without braking now, so the rear suspension contributes greatly to control. Even though this bike has a slightly, 1/2", higher ground clearance, I get considerably more pedal strikes than on my hardtail. Shows that a good suspension is busy at all times. I'm still tweaking the pressure and the rebound on the suspension, mainly the front.
Overall, my outlook on the bike has improved. I've not ridden my hardtail other than around the alley and on the road with road tires. It only took jumping a few landscape timbers and my kid's ramp a few times on each to figure out the epic handles the rough stuff CONSIDERABLY better. Bashing that hardtail off a drop isn't what it used to be. Would I rather have the Epic over another hardtail, yes. Should I have looked harder at the Stumpjumper FSR, yes. Would I buy the bike again, maybe.
If you are a very casual rider, looking for a softer ride, then look elsewhere. You'll be better served with a full time fully. You need to have some speed for the brain to hit a bump and react. If you do, then you'll be rewarded. If you like hardtails, but want to smooth out the bumps, and you make good speed, then this is a bike you should consider. It really nice when you feel the rear tire hit a bump and not jam the seat up your spine. Then jump on the cranks and there's no bob at all. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

The system shifts very fast and reliable, dito braking. The Epic was my dream and is worth the thougts. It is very good in climbing, at the steep parts you have to move a bit forward (like every bike) and then race up every hill with a good contact to the ground and no bobbing. Downhill: very fast and reliable. The Epic is my first fully and there are no more hesitations on going down as fast as possible The fork absorbes the relief very good and so does the rear suspension. I have put more air in the Fox Float (120psi) in stead of the manual. It's less flushy and reacts fast on the terrain. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Rear wheel maintains contact well, very plush ride, ok weight, nice geometry for xcountry comfort. | | Weaknesses: | Some shifting probs (hard and mis-shift) although may just need adjustment. I've ridden a cheapy GT hardtail for years with less problems than I've had on the 3 rides the Epic has given since purchase. The first ride, chain suck 3 times, second ride chain suck twice and chain jumped of the chainset once. Dealer removed a "one too many from the factory" link from the chain. Rode again, no chain suck, but in one instance it was climbing the back of the small sprocket....I'll admit, I was in a smallish gear on the rear this time. That still doesn't excuse the chain jumping off the front rings AGAIN! On top of this, even in the middle ring, I've heard the chain trying to jump off, this while pedaling during hard compression (bottom of creek heading back up). And I thought Horst was supposed to be the wonder suspension!
As for the rest of the bike, it's a bike. The 100 mm makes the front seem a little light, this coming from 80mm (or less). And you can feel the rear suspension doing it's thing. The bottom "drops" out from under you when it activates. It does smooth out the rough stuff.
Bottom line is I feel I made a mistake at the moment. I'm not any faster nor that much less beat up. Wishing I'd gotten another hard tail and saved $600-$700. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Pros: The "Brain" does work as advertised and is a joy to use (note, this is the 2004 Brain that has been reworked from the 2003). I've always raced hardtails and the things that always annoyed about my soft-tails are largely alleviated by using the Brain. I found that as I became more familiar with how the Brain would respond to terrain, the more I like it. I tend to stand a lot when climbing and powering out of corners and the Brain works great in these situations.
The front Fox Float 100 is a good choice for a bike at this level. It is simple to dial in and gives soid performance. Sure, I would love to have a higher end fork, but at this price, it was the best deal going.
Cons: I continue to have to put in extra effort to get the Epic to turn as desired. Switching tires has helped quite a bit but it still feels heavy and slow through tight single track. I've gotten used to this feel and it's not that big of a deal, but I still notice it when I ride.
The front end gets light on steep climbs. I don't know if it's the geometry or what, but the front end does wonder more than any of my other bikes. Strange enough, the front end feels better on climbs (heavier) when I use my light-weight race wheels.
Finally, and being nit-picky here, the welds are pretty sloppy. There are a couple of places where there are some big blobs of welding material along the bead line. I realize that it was built overseas, but I've seen better work on bikes half this price.
Overall: I bought this bike for racing in most situations and I will continue to race it because I feel that it is one of the best bikes for my riding style at this price. I messed around for awhile to get the suspension dialed in, and that made a big difference to feel and my overall satisfaction.

$2150.00 | | Purchased At: | Spokesman | | Strengths: | Semi-lite relative to dual suspension and disc brakes I added. Quick. Climbs like a dream. Low angle top tube comes in handy for protecting the groin. Rear derailleur. Love how it takes drops. Brain rocks. Front fork seems strong. | | Weaknesses: | Seat has come loose a couple of times. Tightened it down hard. Will know on my next ride if it comes loose again. Front derailleur has needed adjustment a couple of times. Service told me after a couple of adjustments it shouldn't happen anymore. I guess it shouldn't bother me the frame seems to scratch easy but after forking out almost 2k I can't understand why that has to be. My first bike was a hardrock pro and it took a fall onto a rock for a chip in the paint to happen. Why couldn't they clear coat that puppy or just go with the base aluminum color? They could've thrown in a rear shock pump, eh? | | Similar Products Used: | Test rode Kona Cindercone, Cannondale F600, Scapel, Trek Fuels | | Bike Setup: | Due to addition of hydraulic disc brakes, went with Mavic Rhyno Lite wheels. LX front and XT rear is standard. Fox R rear with brain. Specialized Roll-X tires. Fox Float RL front. | | Bottom Line: | After searching high and low for a couple of months...I decided what I wanted was what most people want...a dual suspension which acts like a hardtail. I found it. Listed myself as a racer but have only participated in two so far with more on the horizon...none on the Epic yet. A little pricey but worth it so far. If I'm paying that much for a bike, I'm gonna like the color and style. No way was I going with the white of the Epic Comp. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1950.00 | | Purchased At: | Steven's Bike Shop | | Strengths: | See my original report This is an update. | | Weaknesses: | I'm having some problems with the rear Fox Float shock. It isn't reacting the way it should. It holds the initial air I put in but as soon as I ride it, the shock bottoms out, bobs, and becomes a problem. Basically I think after 6 months of riding I've either blown the shock or maybe the air nozzle is leaking. Either way I've got 2 days before a race and shock that is unraceable. I'll update with the outcome, maybe its nothing, Otherwise up until this point I've been happy. | | Bike Setup: | See original report.
I've now added: Race face carbon handle bars Sram hollow link chain Thompson Elite Seatpost | | Bottom Line: | This baby has been doing great until my shock fiasco!!! I would still recommend the bike, I'm interested to see what Specialized will do with the warranty issue.
I'll update later.
The bottom line is as I continue to upgrade this bike just gets better. I also dropped some wieght and that seems to help

It's like riding on plush sofa! Bike looks sweet. I've just got it all upgraded, ridden it only like twice. Get LP handle bars! My wrist use to always hurt after a hard ride, but with these babies, makes a world of difference. Love my bike. I'm more excited about this bike than my other ride, Nissan 350Z :) I'll try to post again after a couple months! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I've only had it, but so far it has been superb. Cycled home fro mthe shop, and was suitably impressed. Suspension was great, and compared to my old mongoose, it is feather light. when i then moved from the heath to the road, it was just as good, and very quick. this is the bike for any cross country rider, if your an amateur get the basic, and if your a pro get the works (my next bike). | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1599.00 | | Purchased At: | Scheels | | Strengths: | Rigid abilities for a dual pogo. Excellent fit and finish. Long term upgradeability - well worth the investment. Bike looks better than some for twice the money. | | Weaknesses: | The rear shock has an o-ring that will push to the end of the travel and stay there to collect grime, probably nothing but enough to mention. I would also like to see a little less Shimano dependecy in the components department. | | Similar Products Used: | Kona Dawg, Specialized Enduro, Diamondback V8 | | Bike Setup: | Stock, minus the reflectors | | Bottom Line: | If you weren't quite sold on dual suspension and have been waiting for a good reason to make the switch, this is it. The brain really works, uphill bumps are its only issue, but there I'll take the rigidness over a kush ride anyway.
I can't get over how good the thing looks. I know thats the most poser thing, but even within the Epic line this frame looks better than the rest. Only last years black S-Works looked as good and It makes shelling out the dough that much easier.
P.S. This is the first dual suspension bike I've bought, the first new bike I've bought since high school (97' GT Tequesta) and the first time I've rode clipless. It took this bike to finally draw my business. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1700.00 | | Purchased At: | Binghams | | Strengths: | Great suspension front and back, the FOX shocks work great. | | Weaknesses: | Some of the components not top of the line and a little heavy. | | Similar Products Used: | 04 Stumjumper, Trek Fuel | | Bike Setup: | Standard from the shop,XT, LX and deore hubs with 221 rims. Fox brain shock and Fox Float 100RL. | | Bottom Line: | I love this bike and belive I made the right decision. I like doing some long climbs with fast downhills coming off the mountains, and this bike fits the bill just right. It is super stable and efficent climbing like my old hadrtail, but I can handle the downhill sections much better than I could before. I can ride sections of the trails that gave problems on my old GT and wonder what my problem was. I will upgrade some of the heavy components as they wear out on this or other bikes I own. As it stands this bike weighs just under 28 pounds, but it feels great regardless. A good set of wheels and going tubeless will be my first upgrade but not really neccisary, this is a great bike right from the shop. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1630.00 | | Purchased At: | Aquarian Bicycles in Monterey | | Strengths: | The suspension is obviously the strongest point and why we all bought one! The fork and brain shock work as advertised. A F100X would obviously be a little nicer, but for those of us who don't race the lock out is good enough. Even without adjustable compression damping, the Fox 100RL (not RLC) seems perfectly damped and tuned for my weight. If I was a professional I'd probably know the difference, but I'm not so it doesn't matter. Some anti-Specialized types on the board here complain about the extra gussets and welds, but this frame is art to me - and I'm a mechanical engineering grad student. :) The Shimano drivetrain works really well for me so far. For the money I paid it works exceptionally well. | | Weaknesses: | The Avid rim brakes are kind of weak, but I appreciate the price drop they give us on the Epic. Take the $600 difference with the next model up and buy nice Hayes or Magura discs and the appropriate hubs, plus some change if you really want them.
The Specialized Roll-X tires aren't the best. I think they do roll quickly over most single track, but man, they slide under hard pedaling going on a steep uphill in loose stuff. That being said, they don't suck as bad as the Bontrager AC Jones that come stock on other bikes, and they don't get you bogged down and thrown off a bike in deep sand, either. | | Similar Products Used: | Same day I bought this bike, I tested a Fisher Cake, Stumpjumper Disc, Giant VT-2 and a Klein Palomino. My previous bike was a '01 Trek 4500, and I road bike on a Specialized Allez Triple. | | Bike Setup: | Large frame, silver. Ritchey Z.E.D. Millenium Race on the front, Ritchey Motovader on the rear. Profile Design's "Briefs" bar-ends. | | Bottom Line: | I wanted an Epic for months but the price is pretty steep. I was going to save a few hundred by going for a Fisher Cake 3 DLX or something, but then my LBS had a 10% sale and the base Epic came down to the price I wanted.
The rear suspension works as advertised. I really like climbing steep, steep hills, so I didn't want to lose hardtail efficiency. Its gone straight up everything I've pointed it at so far, with no problems. The bike is light enough (28.5 pounds) that it has a tendency to wheelie easily with the lockout, but its easily controllable. The Fox Forx 100RL is perfect for the bike. The main thing that turned me off on other bikes in this price range were the comparison of their forks to this one. If it were just between SPV and the Brain Shock I could go either way, but the fork is a huge advantage. I rarely feel the need to lock it out except on pavement, and it soaks up the occasional big hit well. It doesn't look like I'll need to switch it over to 80mm of travel, I'll put it that way. Its also nice for the occasional two to three foot jump or drop, since the Epic has me riding a little faster and jumping a little higher than I would have suspected!
I run with the tire pressure higher than most people, so the suspension activation is a little more noticeable. I don't get the sharp spike like people riding the 2003 described, but what I do notice is that little bumps will get me, and then I'll go over a little bit bigger one that I'm sure will rattle hard, and instead the bike just glides over it. That's it. If you run normal off road pressures (<45 psi) you probably won't even notice that much.
The bike climbs fast, and rockets downhill faster than you could ever want to. I always felt like my Trek (admittedly an entry level bike with a pogo fork) was holding me back, but I don't think I'll ever be able to go as fast as this thing can. The only thing I've noticed is that the front end seems light from the way the bike is stretched out, and I need bar ends to really climb, but that's it.
Oh yeah, and it took me a while to get the geometry right in the store when I bought it. I read where a lot of people just didn't like the feel of it, but it just takes some setup time. If I hadn't have come back to the store with my bike and done some comparative measurements I wouldn't have gotten it because I had the same feel of it that the people on this board did (I'm 6'2", 205 lbs, and a lot of other tall people had issues, check the board). The Epic looked like the same setup as the Stumpjumper but felt all wrong. It was just a small seat shift and it was better than anything else I tried. So in short, don't buy the bad ergonomics BS, this bike really does work. I'm as well lined up on the bike as I could be.

Its had some bad press in the past but it is excellent. The brain lives up to what specialized claim which makes it an extremelly fast and efficient bike. The Fox float on the front complement the rear shock and the bikes whole feel is good. People say its heavy but i dont think its to bad the way it climbs and decends make up for it. Bottom Line. I never liked the "bob" when test riding other bikes even the Blur. I was originally turned off by how the Brain shock looked and the extra weight of full suspension. 1 test ride and I was sold. Specialized supposedly has shaved 1/2 pound from 2003. The full suspension has so many ++++ dealing with a little extra weight was an easy sacrifice. Besides it was cheaper tp drop a few extra pounds off my own frame. I'm 6'1" 193 no complaints at all with this bike, racing or free riding. $1800.00 | | Purchased At: | CrazyCat ElPaso | | Strengths: | Extremely plush but firm suspension. BrainSys is amazing. | | Weaknesses: | None so far | | Similar Products Used: | No - first fully | | Bike Setup: | Standard 2004 Epic with upgrades: 618 wheelset on XTR´s instead the pesky 221´s and the complete Avid 7 instead the 3er Brakes with 5er Levers. | | Bottom Line: | I weihgt in at 240 lbs and I thought a fully would never really work for me. But the Fox is an amazing setup which couldn´t work any better. The Float RL (it is the RL and not the RLC as stated above- also check back with the Specialized site) is plush but never shaky. The Brain in the rear is adjustable and works exceptionally well. No pushing into the suspension when I stand up and power it - I never thought this would be possible. And at the same time gives a smooth ride over the roughest terrain. The Front Fork has to be locked when you stand up and power it - which is no problem. The Frame and the rear suspension geometry is very firm and doesn´t bend under my weight when I power out of the saddle. Amazing product!!! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
