Strengths:amazing climber, feels so solid, love the fox fork,
Weaknesses:a touch heavy for a stock build, but nothing I can complain about
Similar Products Used:schwinn rocket 88 stage 1, jamis dakar xlt
Bike Setup:stock except for titec hellbent cockpit
Bottom Line:would buy this bike at retail price!! this bike will climb a vertical wall!!! I ride this as much as my full suspension. Excellent cross country machine that can be built light enough to race. Not for the trailbike segment, but I have put mine through some hellish rock gardens in colorado, and it is still as solid as when I bought it. Got a great deal from a biker getting out of the sport. It was practically brand new.

Strengths:Very lightweight, man, can it climb up anything.
The F90RL fork (can lockout), the Avid BB7 brakes.
    Weaknesses:Stock tires aren't the best.
    Similar Products Used:FSR XC
Bike Setup:F90RL Fork, CB Egg Beater SL, FSA FR270 handlebars. Everything else is stock.
Bottom Line:Great, GREAT, cross country and commuter bike. I haven't really tested the "abusability" of this bike, but so far, she's taken everything I can dish out. This bike can really climb up anything, and you really pedal hard, you can feel the bike race forward. The only upgrades I made, were the Egg Beater pedals (which I love), and the FSA handlebars.

Strengths:Specialized Stumpjumper Disc 2006; Fast, light and nimble. The Fox shock with a lock-out, is why I bought this bike. It is as solid a ride as steel is. The "Bike peddler" bike shop has a two year warranty on all new bikes.
Weaknesses:The bike was three months old when the bottom bracket, Truvativ GXP, broke in two separate pieces, it was replaced under warranty with the same BB. The chain PC-971 has not broken on me yet, but it does make a rare, loud snapping noise under hard pedaling, so maybe I will replace it based on the other reviews. The front derailleur, Shimano m-580 lx top swing made a rattling noise so it was replaced with 2008 bottom swing XR M-770, much better. The stock seat post was a crappy design. The seat post made a loud creaking/popping noise all the time, It was replaced with another stock seat post "06" and it too made the same noise. The "07" models have a redesigned seat post. I replaced it with a Kalin seat post and this works fine. I am 6'2", 210lbs.
Bike Setup:All stock but, Oury grips, Pan-racers XC-pro tires, XT fd-m770 Front derailleur, Kalin seat post, Platform pedals.
Bottom Line:I will never part with this bike.

Strengths:Great for climbing, super light, yet stiff. Very nice and responsive geometry;Fox RL 100 mm fork, do not need anything else.
    Weaknesses:Disc brake maintenance.
Similar Products Used:Specialized A1 Hard Rock
    Bike Setup:As shown in website.
Bottom Line:Very good maneuverability while in slopes and descending. Light and stiff while climbing. I do not think there is something to be upgraded. You only need to install the computer and you are all set to ride. Specialized A4 aluminum is THE material for better performance. Satin colors would camouflage scratches better. If you prefer hardtails, this is right bike for you.

    Date Reviewed: July 18, 2007
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
    Price Paid: $900.00
    Purchased At:craigslist
Strengths:The bike is sooooo fast it's sick, and it's super light too. It climbs amazingly, and it handles like a dream. The components work very well together, and the Fox fork sucks up the rough stuff easily.

Did I mention it's fast and it climbs well?
Weaknesses:Stock tires suck. I replaced them with some Serfas Gators right away. The chain is crap too. First proper ride and I broke a link. The positioning is a bit raked-out, but then again this is a race hardtail. All minor complaints.
Similar Products Used:Trek 4900, Trek 8000, Klien, Raliegh
Bike Setup:Stock except for tires, and Ritchey V3 Comp pedals.
Bottom Line:Bottom line, this bike is super fast, light, and agile. If you like hitting fast XC trails, or even tight technical stuff along with crazy climbs, then this is a great choice.

If you DH at all, or if your trails include tons of rock gardens, drops, or really rough stuff steer clear. It's an XC race bike, remember that and you'll be fine.

Strengths:Fork, bikes' weight and strength, shifting, pretty much all the components except....
Weaknesses:The chain WILL need to be replaced. Personally, I would replace before your first ride becuase it has to happen and we all know how much it sucks for it to break mid-ride. Also, the tires don't have much traction on loose stuff and I assume they would not be great on mud but i have to to experience that.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Rockhopper, Schwinn Moab

Strengths:Light, amazing value, great overall bike...no big complaints except see below..
Weaknesses:I've got the 2006 model and good god the SRAM pC 971 chain is the worst...After 3 rides it broke (replaced the links) then after another 2 rides my powerlink breaks...

The second thing that it needs is new tires...the specialized fast track tires are great for light trail riding but the moment you hit wet/mud or in serious need for some grip, you're toasted. My upgrade for this bike is definitely to get some panaracer trailblasters on here. Aside from those 2 complaints, the bike's been great :)

~Both front and rear Avid BB7 discs are 185 mm
Bottom Line:I got a closeout deal for the '06 and couldn't pass it up. I was riding a full suspension and wanted something with which I could climb better and move faster. It is exactly as I imagined. Light, fast and handles really well. The 18" is perfect for me (5'9" 32 inseam) and fits better than a Hardrock medium or my own FSRxc medium. Although some have criticized the shifting, I have had no problem with the derailleurs. Shifting has been silky smooth. If you can find it offered under $1200, take it!

    Probably different tires very soon
Bottom Line:Excellent bike most bang for buck. During my comparison this one stood out against most other brands.
One must was to have a Fox fork, which narrowed the field quite a bit in this priceclass.
This is a very good XC bike, with room for upgrades to make it a fairly light XC bike. (How light can a bike get with some 2.5 Kgs of brakes and fork?)
More than enough stopping power and an extra 10 mm of suspension with specialized OE Fox fork F90RL.

    Weaknesses:-LX front derailer
    -Grips suck
Similar Products Used:Rocky Mountain vertex series

    -XT shifters
    -Ergon grips
-Avid Speed Dial Ultimate brake levers
-Avid Full Metal Jacket Brake Lines
    -Shimano CN7701 Chain
Bottom Line:Bottom Line: Awesome bike. I have the 2005 version.
I crashed and knocked the front derailer lower and it got sucked into the big chain ring. I replaced it with an XT front derailer, I couldn't believe how much better the XT shifts, the cage is longer and thus moves more of the chain around.

The stock grips I thought are horrible and not very ergonomic at all, especially for a company like specialized who preaches about ergonomics and fits.

The Avid FR5 levers are ok, nice and light, but lack leverage adjustability, which is a moot point since the BB7s excel with having more mechanical leverage from the levers. I picked up the Avid SD ultimates to fix that.

Wheels are kinda heavy... but for the price of the bike you can't expect to have uber light race wheels.

Seat is fine, I haven't had any problems, all in all, I love this bike. Setup is awesome, fit is good, corners, and climbs very well. 5/5

Anyone who wants a ready to race XC bike, at outstanding price, and with room to customize the bike slightly should get this bike.

Strengths:Super fast, ridgid frame. Flies up hills. Overall good component package. Avid mechanical disc brakes are are easy to set up and maintain unlike most fluid discs. Additional advantage is ability to easily disconnect a brake if disc is damaged in a crash. The mechanicals have more clearance between the brake housing and disc than fluid discs have. I bent a disc when I "bumped" into a tree and I was able to easy disconnect cable and limp home.
Weaknesses:Had some problems with the Truvativ crank. My non drive crank arm bolt kept loosening after <150 miles. My local bike shop worked with Truvativ to get me a new arm and hopefully that will solve my problem.
Similar Products Used:Kona Sex Three, Giant XTC,
Bike Setup:Basically stock with upgraded XT front de
Bottom Line:Great bike overall. If you really want to go fast both up and down hills this is the bike. Nothing climbs or sprints like a hardtail. To the reviewer who said they wished they had the money for full suspension I say that you would most likey be sadly mistaken. I am willing to bet that if you tried a full suspension after this bike you would feel like you were pedeling in mud. The bob and weight of even the best full suspension is not worth the comfort or control unless you are doing some serious downhill riding. Unless of course if you have no skil and you are a fat p****.

Good components (didn't want those stupid dual control levers), I was nicely surprised how nice the shifter package works, very smooth with no skipping. I can't say enough about this fork, it really makes the bike. I go through rough stuff without even knowing I went over it. The brakes are super strong, they are always up to the task of slowing me down (I'm 6'2" 190lbs) and there is no maintenence like the hydros (laughed at my freind when his caliper sprang a leak). This really is a perfect bike for XC riding and racing right out of the box.

The bike handles like a dream, and I have often outperformed many other people who are riding bikes that cost twice as much as my Stumpy. This bike is perfect for both the weekend warrior and aspiring racer.

As for the cranks, the stock ones weren't bad, I just had my LP's from my old bike and had grown quite fond of them. The stock cranks are very stiff (they are Octalink), but I just have a special love for my RF cranks.
