$400.00
Purchased At:
Second hand
Strengths:
Want to learn how it felt for the pioneers of the sport? This is the one. You feel every little twitch, you know what's going on underneath you. Balance point is quite a long way back, wheelies have the bike damn near perpendicular to the ground. Simple to run, no suspension to screw up. Nice and light. Beautiful climber. The best name in the business.
Weaknesses:
Don't think you can just throw this thing down a rough track at speed like you can a decent dual suspension bike. You'll get the crap kicked out of you. Those of you who've grown fond of your hydro disks may be in for a bit of a shock with this creature. Small children with cheap department store dual suspension bikes will mock you. Modern version is overpriced, get an original. Honestly. That way you can at least pick the colour!
Similar Products Used:
2003 Specialized Rockhopper comp (I pretty much axed myself on this thing, and the brakes, inexplicably are hopeless.)
Bike Setup:
Mk.1 Stumpy(Original, not reproduction)- Pretty much stock, running Velociraptor on the back and some random thing on the front.
Bottom Line:
I'm mostly a road rider. This bike is changing that. If you want to teach yourself about mountain bikes, find a nice, relaxed XC track, one of these bikes and spend some time going back and forth. A second hand example costs bugger all, and you have THE mountain bike. Not the best at anything, but the genesis of the sport. It's pure, distilled essence of mountain bike.
