    Favorite Trail:any
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
    Purchased At:Rock's Cycling and Fitness
    Strengths:Strong, amazing
    Weaknesses:NONE!
    Similar Products Used:XTR 517,XT 517
    Bike Setup:Full XT FS
Bottom Line:This is the most amazing wheelset ever made. I have only had to have it trued once in more than three years. These are the most beautiful wheels that I have ever seen too. The rigidity of the DT HUGI hugs (yes, FRONT AND BACK) is wonderful and outweighs the flex in the SID XC. With these wheels you cannot go wrong and if you would like to sell me another pair or trade with me for a nearly brand new set of BLACK X517 with XTR Hubs, WRITE ME, I will make the trade as long as the wheels are in decent condition or I will buy them from you!

    Date Reviewed: November 3, 2002
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
    Purchased At:Ebay
    Strengths:Look really nice, pretty light
Weaknesses:The front hub flange broke because Specialized uses a radial spoke pattern.
Similar Products Used:XTR hubs, XT hubs, STX hubs
Bike Setup:Came on an FSR Extreme
Bottom Line:These are the old generation (silver) hubs with black spokes, brass nipples, and red ano 517's

I got these wheels on an FSR Extreme I bought through Ebay. All I got a chance to do was ride around the block once before the hub-flange broke. The service guy at my LBS said it's a common problem that Specialized will probably warrenty (we'll see about that). He said the problem is so common that two hubs have broken just sitting up against the wall in the shop. Apparently it only happens to the front hub because they are radially spoked (each spoke is restrained by less material). The new (black) hubs do this less often but still break.

My advise: Hold on to your receipts. If you buy used, get the recipts from the previous owner. If you have to have the S-works hubs, try to get them cross laced so this won't happen to you.

1 chili for value because as a used product you may be screwed when the hub brakes

Zero chilies overall because they break (come on! S-works is supposed to be among the best), but 2 extra chilies added because the LBS said Specialized normally warrenties this (I hope).

    Strengths:Strong, Light, look cool
    Weaknesses:Hub says specialized on it
    Similar Products Used:non
Bike Setup:Schwinn moab 2 tricked out
Bottom Line:theses wheels are awsume. they stay true and i ride hard the front hub is really strong because they use one solid pole for a skwer. the DT spokes dramaticly straingthin it too. i also resently found out that Hugi makes the front hub and the rear is made by Specialised (about XT level). just be shore to keep the mavic 517 rims clean. i paid 200 for the the whole set

    Date Reviewed: February 4, 2002
    Duration Product Used:2 Years
    Price Paid: $400.00
    Purchased At:Criterium bike shop
    Strengths:Light
    stays fairly true
    hubs don't quit
    Weaknesses:Hubs are a little finiky
    Rear skewer weak
Would prefer a less conspicious color
    Similar Products Used:race lite
    Bike Setup:99 cdale f700
Bottom Line:I couldn't be happier with a wheel set. They've taken thousands of miles of xc riding in Colorado and New Mexico. The only problems I've had is the original rear skewer didn't have enough leverage, and the pawls and seals are pick about the quantity and quality of the lube you put in them. (try a light synthetic). This wheelset is basically a hugi rear hub (and possibly the front, I'm not sure)laced up to Mavic 517's via dt revolution spokes, so you might be able to get them cheaper that way (possibly)

Strengths:Light, and very cool looking, very strong
Weaknesses:Rear hub makes loud clicking noise. Rear hub is OEM by DT/Swiss HUGI.
    Similar Products Used:XTR 517, XT 222
    Bike Setup:S-work FSR XC stock,
Bottom Line:Great set of wheel. Light and can take a lot of hard pounding. Very good quality wheelset, except the clicking noise made by the rear hub.

Favorite Trail:Anything without snow on it.
    Duration Product Used:6 months
Strengths:Amazing wheelset. I've used them for courier duty, on downhills everywhere, and I have yet to take a spoke wrench to them.
Weaknesses:I didn't get the really cool finish (my hubs are black) , spokes are black, rim/nipples are red.
Similar Products Used:I used to use ryhno lites for courier duty but these are holding up just as well.
Bike Setup:Stumpjumper M4 S-works, occasionally with rigid fork for road/trials riding
Bottom Line:The best wheelset I have ever used period.

    Bonty Race Lights
    Bike Setup:
22 lb Ellsworth Truth Hardtail Destroyer
Bottom Line:The spoke tension was all screwed up when i got them, had to completely tension both wheels, after a ride or two i had to do a complete rebuild of the rear. Its never really stayed true, always a little out of adjustment. Then a few weeks ago I did a downhill, and at the bottom the rim was ALL OVER THE PLACE. completely disconnecting the rear brake and it still rubbed. I completely detensioned and rebuilt, its now true again but way out of round. My Bontrager Race Lites have been flawless on the other hand. All I can think to attribute it to is the off center drilling. I wonder how long til status quo big dog asleep at the wheel Mavic catches on and realizes that off center drilling just makes sense. My brake pads have also severly gouged the braking surface, they alway sound scratchy. Not like Ceramic. The front skewer weights 120g, more than both f and r for a normal skewer set. probably good if you are a big guy. and need a stiff front wheel. My friend is also having rear wheel trueness problems, and his rear skewer broke off in his hand.Overall, I'm not impressed.

    Strengths:
As light or lighter than almost all other wheelsets on the market, including Cane Creek and most Mavic Wheelsets. Hugi hubs last forever are easily serviced and make the best freehub noise ever. Most importantly they are not just light and cool looking(red rims with gold nips, black DT spokes, and Pewter S-works hubs) but they are strong too.
    Weaknesses:
    Have found none yet.
    Bike Setup:
97' Fisher X-Caliber 853 frame with Total Air equipped Judy XC. Gripshift/XT drivetrain and of course S-Works Wheels.
Bottom Line:These hoops are hands down the best value in the
Lightweight/Cross-Country wheelset market.Strong, Light, Light, Light, Strong, And very cool looking. If you find a pair of these wheels anywhere BUY THEM! before someone else does.

    Belleview Ocala, FL
    Duration Product Used:

    Strengths:
The wheelset is a killer deal(especially when you get to empl. purch. them.) The wheelset is light but not as light as the new HED wheelset with TI spokes. This is definitely one upgrade I recommend to some of my XC customers. DT/Hugi hub body for that price is excellent.
    Weaknesses:
Came out of tension in the rear on the non-drive side after 3 races. Retensioned it and everything is A-OK!
    Similar Products Used:
XTR/517 Citron color 14/15 DT. That MELLO YELLO green gets old quick. The red on the Sworks is so much nicer.
    Bike Setup:
S works FSR XC and SAN Andreas both with SX Carbon.
Bottom Line:Good Deal for those who can't afford the new HED wheelset or the Chris Kings.

    Similar Products Used:
    Spinergy Roks-XEs, XT/217s
    Bike Setup:
S-Works FSRxc, SX-Carbon, Fox Vanilla Float RC
Bottom Line:This is a very nice set of wheels, especially for an OEM that comes on the S-Works. Very light and very nice. So far they've held up pretty well and I'm definately impressed. I don't find them to be worth the $400 Specialized asks for them (that's charging way to much for their hubs), but since no one else sells 'em yer outta luck if you want them or a red anodized 517 rim since Mavic only makes it for Specialized. If you're gonna pay $400, go the extra mile and pay $450 for a set of Chris King/517s with black spokes and gold nipples.

Bottom Line:I actually own the1998 red X517s with Stout front hub and XT rear with same spokes and nips (came on my 1998 S-Works). Maybe not exactly these wheels, but close enuff. Anyway, I am 6'4 and 220lbs and I ride extremely rocky, tekky terrain, and they have held up very well for about 4 or 5 months. They are starting to go out of true and are pretty dented up now, though. But DEFINITELY a sweet pair o' wheels!
