    Purchased At:Ramseys Cycle
Strengths:I have yet to have any kind of a problem with these cranks. i think most of the people writing these reviews must not be very smooth riders. I weight close to 200lb and am 6'3". I have used these cranks on my bike since day one and they have gotten alot of use. I check from time to time to see if the bolts holding the chainrings to the crank are tight. Other than this I just use them. I ride long downhill sections at the local ski hills without any problems, long backcountry rides smooth as siilk and in the city cruisin to the beer store. I don't know why everyone is having such a bad time with these cranks?
Weaknesses:this product isn't weak must be the other reviewers.

If you think that the machine makes the man you are wrong.Stop cryin so much and get outside and use them crappy cranks if thats what you got.Like I said try and keep it smooth and lots of things will probably work better for you, turd burglars.

Strengths:Mostly stayed in one piece for 3 seasons of moderate use.
Weaknesses:Fell apart in first 3 miles (had to tighten every 30 min for one year). Tooth wear very fast. Flexy. Creeky at times.
Similar Products Used:Previous Stumpjumper crap crank
Bike Setup:2002 Specialized Stumpjumper M4 Comp.
Bottom Line:Low end crank and bb come stock with this excellent bike. I had problems keeping the crank arm tight for the first season. I knew it was a junk crank but figured I would just burn it up and replace it. Suprisingly it lasted 2+ seasons of moderate trail riding (had I been racing I would have replaced it immediately). It has been entirely adequite much of the time...

Strengths:Thsy look good on the bike when you get it. Works well when you test ride it and everything stats off well until ya hit the dirt then....
Weaknesses:Creak Creak Creak Creak Creak Crak and guess what even more Creak Creak Creak Creak! These thing will not SHUT UP! They also get loose real quick check em before you ride and after. Thay are also very flexy the don't feel that solid and I don't think they will take a hit well at all and I'm not trying it either. Thay also have scrathched the hell out of my chain stays and that is not fun I want to scratch it not some crap part!
Similar Products Used:Shimano I still like these the best both LX And XT!
Bike Setup:02 StumpJumper FSR XC With Alot of goodies!
Bottom Line:These are a real winner here if you like your bike to sing to you while you ride. If you like peace and quiet DON"T GET THESE they will get on your nerves quick! I don't trust them at all thay make noise and feel flimsy and feel like it will break if you hammer them real hard! I will be getting another set of XT's as soon as I can. I'd love ta get a set of XTR's but I think my girl will kill me if I spend that type of money on my bike that cost a bundle already. I love Specialized but I think they should take a hint here stick to what you know. Your not building brakes or derailers of even shifters let the drive train experts deal with that you guys stick to building great bike frames and use the good stuff instead of building your own. C'Dale tried it and I've seen more C'Dale parts pulled of bikes than you can count man. PEACE!!!

    Similar Products Used:XTR crankset
    Bike Setup:'02 Stumpjumper FSRxc
Bottom Line:These cranks came with my bike. I have only ridden it for about 2 weeks now and the WeakArm II's are already chattering at me during normal street riding. It started chattering only under high torque, say going up steep inclines, but now when a pedal goes around it creeks and grinds. I would not recommend purchasing this component for moderate trial riding. Just too weak. 4 chilis for value just due to the fact they came factory on my bike.

Bottom Line:These things were ultimately disapointing. I found that my chainrings took paint off of my chain stay on two different bikes. Bottom Line:While not apparently defective, the continual creaking that the shop mechs could never resolve over two weeks of riding ( total 128m off-road ) resulted in their replacing them with LX Hollowtech crankset & spline BB which completely resolved the issue AND bagged me noticeable stiffer cranks. Wonderful shop ( Bicycle Sports Shop, Austin, TX ). Irritating Cranks. Possible the Strongarm II / Spline BB would be better, but will never know.

Bottom Line:This crank set is not to bad for a starter component. I encountered no problems until the untimely death of my chain rings. The cost$$ of replacing the chain rings encouraged me to upgrade to the Shimano XT. For a few bucks more this upgrade is worth it!! For those of you that may encounter this chain ring trauma or similar experience with these cranks...I suggest contacting Specialized first to see if you have a defective crank, from the manufacture, before forking out the cash. Strengths:-Black anodized finish looks great
    -Accurate, fast shifts
    -Hassle free performance
    Weaknesses:-Not as stiff as XT
    -Thin chain rings
    -Durability still in question
-Definitely not a performance oriented design
    -Too heavy
Similar Products Used:XT LX STX Alivio Sugino
Bike Setup:Came stock on my '01 Enduro Sport
Bottom Line:These are good, if uninspired cranks. I will give Specialized credit for at least trying. Seems everyone's b[tching about Shimano, now everyone's ragging on Specialized. Come on guys! Make up your minds.

In the miles and miles I've used these cranks, I have yet to experience a problem with actual performance. I think that they are strong enough: I'm six foot, 220 pounds and I thrash my rig. True enough, I don't jump or do a lot of downhill. Guess that puts me in the average trailrider category. Which obviously isn't good enough for some of you idiots.

If people want to bash a product, then fine. But be honest with yourself. If you want a sub 30 pound bike, then don't expect the parts on a rig designed for trail use to be able to stand up to big hit or downhill riding. Forget it.

I'll use this crankset until the rings wear out and then I'll replace it with something lighter, like XT. Until then I'll give Specialized a little bit of credit and tell them to keep trying. I'll also give them a bit of thanks for at least offering us a reasonably priced alternative to Shimano.

Submitted by Dave a Weekend Warrior from Melbourne
    Date Reviewed: September 27, 2001
    Duration Product Used:6 months
Strengths:Looked ok when new (for what it counts!)
Weaknesses:Had problems from the beginning with the chain rings flexing under load. It was so bad in the large chain ring that the chain would clash with either side of the derailer on alternate peddle strokes.

The the middle chain ring buckled twice, the second time breaking the chain and making for a very long walk home. Got this replaced with a shimano ring and had no probs for a while.....

Recently the lockring that hold the spider to the crank arm sheared off leaving the chain rings loose on the bottom bracket. Specialized say that theres no prob and a new lockring will fix it all. However, I haven't been able to test it yet as the bike has been in the shop for three weeks waiting for a specialized freewheel that also failed on the same ride!!!! Anyway it sounds like another walk is in the making - if I ever get my bike back that is.

Just in case you think I'm hard on my gear I'm riding my hard tail at the moment which has a set of 5yr old "shimano A" cranks (really low spec) that are still original (as with everyting else on the bike) and have never had a problem. Same deal for my old FS bike.
Bike Setup:2001 Specialized FSR elite - stock standard (not for long) Seems crazy to have to upgrade a bike that costs this much......
Bottom Line:Just a disaster waiting to happen. Get rid of these before you have to walk home or get hurt.

Strengths:Came with 1997 S-Works M2. Strong, quiet. They look better than anything Shimano makes. Hey, they're cranks. They work. End of story.
    Weaknesses:None so far.
Similar Products Used:Shimano Deore LX, Suntour stuff, Shimano Dura Ace (roadbike), Shimano Deore XT
    Bike Setup:Essentially factory stock.
Bottom Line:I'm totally baffled at all these posts indicating that the Strong Arm cranksets 'totally suck,' etc. I've had the factory supplied cold-forged version on my 1997 S-Works M2 since I got it, and they've been great -- no squeaks, rattles, or other noises.

I weigh about 175 lbs, so maybe that's why I haven't had any problems, but I'm thinking most of the guys with negative posts are:

    (1) freeriders or downhillers
    (2) a lot heavier than I am
    (3) just destructive and not cognizant that you can't beat the sh*t out of your bike and expect it to hold up day-in and day-out (mountain bikes, particularly cross-country bikes, aren't built like BMX bikes)
    (4) venting at Specialized because lots of other posters are too

One of my friends has a 1998 S-Works M2, and he's trashed numerous components on his bike doing the same rides I do -- yet he weighs less than I do, and our endurance and technical skills are roughly comparable in other regards. Why does he break things? Because it's not part of his technique to consider that his bike isn't indestructible.

I'm not interested in starting a flame war: I'm sure lots of good riders have a legitimate beef with these cranks. But I did want to note that my experience with them so far has been pretty positive and many of the negative posts come across as more of an anti-specialized screed than legitimate complaining. My StrongArms have performed better than the Shimano Deore LXs, Deore XT cranksets, or the Suntour stuff I've used in the past, all of which creaked and flexed more than the StrongArms. The Dura Ace stuff on my roadbike didn't creak either that I can recall. I haven't tried any high end 'race' quality stuff because there hasn't been any need for me to do so yet, so I can't comment on whether such gear is markedly better.

    My $.02.

    Bike Setup:stumpjumper xt/xtr mostly stock
Bottom Line:After wrecking two granny gears during not very aggressive riding, they gave me a titanium inner ring which has held up fine since. But the real problem from the beginning was the chain getting stuck in between the two smaller rings. I don't know if my crankset was manufactured wrong, or if it got slightly bent somehow, but that shouldn't be able to happen. Anyway, the mechanics at REI in Conshohoken told me it was something about the way I was riding. (bullsh*t) They tweaked the tightness of the mounting screws, and the problem deminished, but not entirely. After reading the other posts I finally know that I'm not crazy - these cranks just S.U.C.K. I feel much better, thanks.
