$650.00 | | Purchased At: | Cycle Surgery, London | | Strengths: | inexpensive high quality build light weight for high strength product 8.1 inches of plush, controlled travel great shock - Fox Vanilla RC great handling - very nimble and quick turning takes 3" tire in rear | | Weaknesses: | horrible paint colour lower linkage bearing susceptible to mud / sand 24" rear wheel only - no 26" wheel choice | | Similar Products Used: | various DH bikes over the years | | Bike Setup: | currently in pieces after 8 months of glorious riding, new spec will include Marzocchi 2003 Super T Pro, 20mm axle front wheel, Hayes DH disc front brake, etc.
old spec: 2002 Junior T, Shimano Deore Xt discs, 26" / 24" halo rims on XT disc hubs, Gazzolodi 2.6"/3.0" tires, Tioga cube stem / 286 bar, Titec Beserker saddle, Mr. Dirt Gizmo 2003, 24 Seven Dark angel cranks, shimano DH spds, XTR mech, etc. | | Bottom Line: | the 24" rear wheel has attracted alot of controversey, some like it, many don't. MBA magazine tested the Big Hit and loved the design, but hated the smaller rear wheel. I guess whether you like it or not depends on where you ride. Here in England we have lots of slow, technical woods DH courses instead of the faster, open courses you get in the US and Europe, the Big Hit is perfect for our type of riding and racing.
The frame is well put together, high quality build, forged linkages, etc. sealed bearings, very incredible quality for the cheap price. The Fox Vanilla RC is a great shock, works perfectly with the superior FSR suspension system, so you don't need a Romic or 5th Element shock here!
The Big Hit is a great play bike for doing drops, freeriding, and racing tight technical gnarly DH courses. I suffered this year from using a Junior T fork, it started getting wobbly after a few months, and the damping was never up the job of taking stutter bumps and braking bumps. I have stripped my bike down, sold the Junior T and are waiting for 2003 Super T Pro or Boxxer Team fork.
My only negatives about the Big Hit is that it could be nice to have the choice of using a 26" wheel (my DMR Trailstar LT hardtail lets me run either 24" or 26"), also the paint colour is horrible (scab red) so I'm getting it repainted metallic black in a local auto shop.
the other problems I've had (and I haven't ridden the bike that much due to shoulder dislocation only 3 weeks after building bike in April) is that the lower linkage bearings are easily sprayed with mud and sand by the rear wheel...this wore out and needed sending back to Specialized to get a replacment,'cause the rear suspension was wobbling! I have now put a piece of inner tube around this bearing point to stop any muck getting in
otherwise, a flawless design and real bargain.GET ONE !! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$650.00 | | Strengths: | Very stong and a nice rear shock to soak up the big hits and the smaller bumps to | | Weaknesses: | it has a 24" rear wheel. This can be alright but does get annoying when trying to replace some of the parts | | Similar Products Used: | Santa Cruz super 8 | | Bike Setup: | Shivers (very nice) Mrp XTR cranks + derailler and hayes dics (da best) and odi lock ons (a must have) | | Bottom Line: | The best value bike in da world offering 8" of rear travel, for the price u won't find better. You have to have shivers or some kind of risse fork. Make sure u have the hayes too or hopes, u need the stoppign power for DH. I did a 16ft drop on it and it was fine. Will never break | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$560.00 | | Purchased At: | E/P through Specialized | | Strengths: | Excellent rear design incorporating the 24inch wheel format. The shorter upper and lower links make this bike very strong. Nice workmanship, the welds are clean and the finish is very good. The rear FOX RC was a xlnt choice and nice gussets at the headtube. I really like the Hydro. brake line retainers. Specialized uses plastic C clips that snap onto the frame and lower link to hold the Hydro. brake lines. | | Weaknesses: | The rear derailer cable is routed under the bottom bracket and then under the right rear lower link then to the rear derailer. This causes the cable housing to rub the bottom bracket shell and really pulls on the cable housing during full compression. If you look in the Specialized catalog the Big Hit Comp's rear derailer housing is routed above the rear lower link. Routing the cable on top just makes set up alot easier. | | Similar Products Used: | 2001 Specialized Enduro Pro, Intense Uzzi DH. | | Bike Setup: | 2001 Marzocchi Shiver, C.K. heaset, Azonic stem/H-bar, XTR derailer and shifters, 36h Intense/Hadley Hubs laced to Arrow 24inch rims, Nokian 2.6 24inch Gaz., XT cranks, etc. | | Bottom Line: | Other than the Derailer cable routing issue I really like this frame. I only noticed one other problem when I received the frame. The threads inside the bottom bracket shell where not cut fully into the shell. Basically, there where no threads about a 1/4 inch after the original threads on the left side of the BB shell. Specialized took care of the problem ASAP. There is a difference between the Comp. and Pro other than the color. Your get the FOX Vanilla RC with the PRO and you get the FOX Vanilla R with the Comp. As of now, this is my favorite bike and I have not had any other problems since I purchased the frame. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
