$800.00 | | Purchased At: | Privately in 2002 (price in CANADIAN) | | Strengths: | I love this bike for road riding, its so smooth. Its great off road too, its so light I can hop small roots and such easily without even using clips. | | Weaknesses: | I find that the gears are a little rough on the shifting, this could be that the previous owner was rather...rough! :) I can't really think of anything bad to say, so far this bike has met my needs for what I do. | | Similar Products Used: | Well...for four years I rode a 93 Peugot Dune! Its a great bike to......... | | Bike Setup: | I've put Specialized Team Control Tires on. The brake levers have also been replaced, the old ones got schmucked, smaller ones are on it now. . I put a somewhat softer seat on to. | | Bottom Line: | I love this bike! Its great for what I do, its freaking fast, even when I just started riding. The only problem I had was uphills, being used to a heavier bike, I used to tip back rather frequently! Other then that I haven't had a good spill yet but this bike is great, I bought it after 2 seasons for 800 bucks Canadian and its been one of my best purchases ever! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I do get a creek from bottom bracket it has been replaced once but was warrantied, I don't think the headset it that great | | Similar Products Used: | Gt Karakorum | | Bike Setup: | Right Now Stock except changed seat post and went to Sella Italla seat very nice | | Bottom Line: | It is a geat bike. Does anyone know of a great Mud Tire. I would change the cranks to race face or higher grade Shimano and change bottom bracket. With a few upgrades you have one fast light bike. | | Weaknesses: | Rear Wheel bearing died.... explains that funny noise so many people have referred to. Tires - just replace them! Pedals - sometimes feel like I'm not quite clipped in when I really am, and vice versa.
| | Similar Products Used: | None - this is my first (and probably last) MTB purchase. I don't need anything more than what I have right now. | | Bike Setup: | Threw on a chick's seat (Terry Butterfly), a set of riser bars, and a set of green Wildgripper Comp S (front) and Wildgripper Lite (back). | | Bottom Line: | I started MTB riding when I purchased this bike 5 months ago. In the last two months I rode Banff, Mammoth, Tahoe, Durango, Grand Canyon, Fruita, Moab and continue to love this bike. The Wildgripper Lite I put on the rear wheel stood up really well and didn't wear down at all at Slickrock while every other rider on the trail finished with self-made slicks! I replaced the rear hub bearings (under warranty) after they gave in and haven't had any problems since. Tuned the rear derailer once and tightened a loose screw in a pedal... but that's about it. This bike rocks and I must say, looks quite eyecatching with the yellow frame, red fork and green tyres... always important! I suppose as an ignorant novice buyer, appearance meant a lot and the price was great and I have never looked back. Oh, and it's fast too... got me past a grizzly in Banff without mishap and up all the wicked climbs at Slickrock while guys pushing their bikes looked on. I love that! Maybe I'm not a novice anymore.

$1300.00 | | Purchased At: | Matthew's Cyclery Indianapolis | | Strengths: | The bike is fast, aggressive, and climbs like a champ. It seemed very responsive and held it's own in any races that I've participated in. The bike is superlight and was a great deal for a semi-begginer in mountain biking, especially when considering the component configuration that comes stock with the bike. The fork, sid xc, that comes with the bike is oh so plush! | | Weaknesses: | Personally I've had a lot of problems with the avid mag brakes. The tiny tension screw stripped out through the course of riding on me like 3 times. Each and every time I sent the brake back to Avid which is a major inconvenience. I recently upgraded to XTR's and they seemed to do the job. Another problem is the junky seat that comes stock with the bike, can it be anymore uncomfortable? Moving on, I bent the 2nd largest cog on the rear cassette something that I'm reading more and more about and seems that it happens more than it should. The paint seems to chip rather easily, and what the hell is the noise coming out of the rear hub? One last note, I've had a hard time keeping the rims true, they seemed to come untrue a little too often requiring extra maintinence. | | Similar Products Used: | Cannondale F1000, Trek 8XXX, Fisher Mt. Tam | | Bike Setup: | Stock except for Time atacs alium, XTR V-brakes, and XT rear cassette. | | Bottom Line: | Bottom line, it may of seemed as if I was really trashing the bike, I wasn't! I love my stumpy and wouldn't get a different hardtail if I had the same room, money, to work with. I am very critical of my rig and give it a lot of extra care and affection mainly b/c I am a demanding rider. I would recomend this bike to anyone, especially since it is a sweet deal. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I'm back to review it again | | Weaknesses: | Finally found some! It took 6 months but two minor problems: the rear wheel likes to slide out of the drops and the cable routing could be better | | Bike Setup: | Stock except XT cranks and Sun 0 Degree Lyte rims with LX hubs (100 bucks Pricepoint) | | Bottom Line: | The problems: the rear wheel slipped out of the drops on rough descents. Solution: crank the skewer down. Change your skewer if need be. I got El Cheapo from my LBS and it fixed everything (it doesn't even have a brand on it!) This problem put an end to my stock rear tire. oh well. The cable routing isn't the greatest either. My rear derailleur cable has been GUNKED bad. I had the cables changed and two weeks later they were needing a change again. Two solutions: get a Thingamig (they're like $2) and get Gore cables if you're gonna do a lot of riding. Or else pay your LBS $12 or whatever everyother couple weeks to replace them. Still a kick a** bike! Just want to educate people who are looking at buying this unit. It's great: lightweight, great components, climbs like a mountain goat on crack, descends like criminal running fromthe cops. It handles like nobody's business. It's very laterally rigid. This is a very fast bike and if u dont know what your doing with it the whipepouts can be pretty painfull. This bike is cross-country use only, I wouldn't recommend using it as a endure or city bike. The frame tends to flex alot there for your gonna get some nice scratches from your chainring. If you ride in rough, loos rocky terrain i suggest that you change your tires to something more aggressive. the tires are made for hard packed trails. I often catch myself smiling like a mental patient out on the trails. I ride about 4 days/week. I take it everywhere: sandy (ft. ord), mudddy (not on the single track please), hard pack (marin). 'My things' are: 1)long and technical climbs and 2)fast, less technical, descents - the ride is quite stiff and I've already chipped 1 tooth. I carry about 185# so maybe that's why my big ass hurts after sitting on that seat all day. The point is: 1)the bike climbs with ease and agility, like a goat - it's that obvious and 2) I'm not OCD over equipment weight, but this ride is light. Do upgrade to eliminate the aforementioned weaknesses (as VISA permits) so you have nothing to whine about. And yes, I still ride the rigid Stumpy too cuz it's fun to switch back and feel like a hero once in a while. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I am amazed at how much the ct2 bars eat up trail vibrations. The only thing that really bugs is the rear hub. When riding it sounds as if there are pebbles in the hub. My LBS said that it was nothing to worry about an just threw some grease on it. I am going to add the following parts which will make the bike perfect for me: Chris King hubs, Race Face Cranks, Easton stem, Easton seat post, time pedals, and a new seat. | | Similar Products Used: | Raleigh M800 , Trek 6700 Disc | | Bike Setup: | Not Competing: Gel Seat and clipless pedals Competing: Stock | | Bottom Line: | Get the 2001 if you are thinking about the disc brakes. The 2001 SID shock has standard schrader fittings too..Much easier to adjust.
Going to wear these tires out fast and upgrade...When that happens, i am going to look for a longer stem. I am 6'0" tall and this bike isn't long enough for me...Also going to go with a stiffer crank.

I previously had a 28lb alum hardtail and the first day I went out on this stumpjumper pro i climbed my favorite training climb a full gear higher which saved a whopping 4-5 minutes over the 3.5 miles at 8% grade. weight does make a difference. | | Weaknesses: | Harsh ride but extremely stiff in sprints. Stutter bumps will kill you on this bike but you will make up for the time lost on the climbs. Tires are also not mud tires in any respect but they haul in any other conditions. | | Similar Products Used: | Specialized Rochhopper | | Bike Setup: | stock | | Bottom Line: | I bought this bike as a yearend close out for $600 less than msrp. It was already a great value. I've had two XC races on it so far and the only areas that this bike doesn't excel in is stutter bumps and slick mud. But you are going to have drawbacks with any bike. I'm just a slightly above average Jr Sport class racer and in the first race of the year I out climbed the entire sport field in the first climb. A lot of that had to do with this killer sled. $1500.00 | | Purchased At: | Sunset Cyclery | | Strengths: | This unit is extrememly lightweight stock. Bang for the buck on this ride can't be beat. Imagine me with a big stick and this bike. I couldn't beat it if you offered me a Trek Elite 9.8! Every piece of hardware is astounding. The XT/XTR derailleur combo is awesome. The AVID mag brakes are some of the best on the market and the Mavic 517 rims are top of the line! | | Weaknesses: | The SPD's. I know they're time tested and true, but at the 12 Miles Of Hell, they clogged worse than my artieries after eating 3 Big Macs. I think I'm gonna listen to my buddies and go ATAC. I couldn't afford it initially, but now I know and knowing is half the battle! | | Similar Products Used: | Voodoo Erzulie my buddy built up | | Bike Setup: | Stock except the XT cranks. Like I said above, for the price this bike has a killer set up. XT shifters, Avid MAG levers and brakes, XT/XTR deraillerus, SID air fork...this bike has it all for a very reasonable price | | Bottom Line: | PRICE! If you're a racer on a budget or just a weekend warrior with a decent chunk of change to drop on a bike BUY THIS BIKE. Sure there's lighter stuff out there like the Elite 9.8 but look at the whole package. The quality of components combined with a fairly lightweight frame brings this bike in at around 23 pounds. For a stock bike that's freakin' incredible. What other bike at this price has the set up this one does? A very select few. One thing I was worried about was the paint. Many reviews mentioned that the paint liked to chip. Well, mine did too on the first ride. Until I talked to the guys at my LBS (Sunset Cyclery...they're great guys and really interesting to talk to too) and he recommended using a Lizard Skin on the drivetrain side chainstay. For the low price of 8.50 I solved my paint problem. Even after some serious crashes (one at about 25 mph on a heinously rocky hill) there are minimal scratches and scars (at least that have appeared on me). The brakes are holding up well and could stop a postal worker from shooting up his local post office. The seat is a matter of preference. I know people who love it and those who hate it, but give it a try and get some shorts! Those help so much! Other than that, I just changed the cranks from the Strongarms to the XT's. I want to know that if I'm stuck in a rut and have to shift gears and hammer that the equipment is going to perform. I skipped the ATAC pedals for this. You should too if you have the $85 bucks for the upgrade. Well worth it. They're much stiffer too. Be careful with the 517 rims!!!! I rode the 12 Miles of Hell with them and ruined my rear rim. The 517's are GREAT for XC but for any "hardstuff" (i.e. jumps where you miss slightly and land with 180 lbs. moving 20 mph on the rear wheel against a rock or anything rocky with big downhills and lots of abuse on your wheels) get some beater wheels. I'm gonna get some Mavic 221's with LX hubs. My rear wheel hops worse than a one legged man in a butt kicking contest, but I'm getting a new 517 rim shortly. I love them. The hub isn't the greatest, but it's not worth the extra $$$$ to upgrade. Overall I am very pleased with this bike. For the price it's very hard to beat. Granted, I have been riding it for only 1 month, but the 12 Miles of Hell really tested me and this bike. This bike far outstrips my ability right now. It can do anything I ask it too and more. If you're looking for a ready to race right out of the box bike, get this bike!!! Plus as somebody else already stated...yellow is obviously the fastest color. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I love the color, and somebody already said this but, yellow is the fastest color. I love the weight, I love feel, and I love the speed. This is a great ride on and off road. With the right wheels and/or tires this thing can easily be a comfortable road ride too. | | Weaknesses: | Apparently there was a flaw in the original production of the M2 Stumpjumpers and it caused a "tick" every rotation of the cranks. This became a bit more than annoying and the only conclusion I could come to was the pickup pins on the large chainring. My remedy was to grind the pickup pins down a bit and that seemed to do the trick. | | Bike Setup: | Thompson seatpost, Spinergy Spox Wheels, Selle Italia Flite II, Race Face Next Cranks, TIme ATAC Carbons, everything else stock. | | Bottom Line: | What yoou get for the money is unbelieveable. Out of the box this bike is ready to go. A guy culd just go and buy this and leave it alone if he wanted to and it would blow anything else away. This is a super light super quick bike. I like the ride a lot it dosen't descend very well, it's realy rough but it's a very fast climber and it's a little under 22lbs. that's light for an 18" and it's pretty durable as well and with the slicks on pavement I feel like I'm on a road bike. $1300.00 | | Purchased At: | performance bike | | Strengths: | Decent components for the price. Very light weight at 22.5 lb for 18" frame. Does everything well. | | Weaknesses: | Flexy, creaky cranks, front chain rings bent easily. Stock rear tire wore out in only a few rides. Frame dropouts not very strong. | | Similar Products Used: | test rode many bikes. | | Bike Setup: | LP seat post, ti railed seat, sram 9.0sl shifters and rear derailer, easton monkey lite riser bar, everything else stock. | | Bottom Line: | The good: Bike has really good components for the most part. The bike is very light and handles well in all situations. SID fork performs well in low to medium speeds. Avid brakes and levers are excellent. Light wheel set. With the addition of carbon seat post and ti railed seat the ride really softens up.
The Bad: The specialized strongarm cranks and chainrings SUCKS ASS. The crank flexes too much and the chain rings bent very easily without banging on rocks. The chainrings shifts with lots of hesitation even when they were new and straight. The rear hub axle is digging into the frame dropouts. This is very annoying because it tilts the rear wheel just enough for the brakes to drag the rim. I have to check it and re-tighten the quick release lever after every few minutes. Anybody else have this problem? | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1300.00 | | Purchased At: | Bennett's Bike Shop | | Strengths: | Nimble, stiff frame for excellent handling. This bike climbs like a goat. | | Weaknesses: | So far the only weakness on this bike is my legs! | | Similar Products Used: | '99 GT Avalanche, '00 GT Zaskar, '97 Specialized Stumpjumper | | Bike Setup: | Stock with GT Platform pedals | | Bottom Line: | This bike is an excellent Urban Assault Vehicle. I have taken though the mean streets of NYC and put it though the paces...(insane cabbies, rabid Soccer Moms, wacked ass guidos)...it can hold its own and then some.
There is nothing more satisfying than passing up some roadie on his 4k+ road bike tricked out with titanium-you-name-it.
The components you get for the price is absolutely insane. The brakes are schweet. The SID XC is nice for those unexpected potholes at 3am when you're too drunk to take notice. The weight of this bike is also great, it weighs in less than all of the other bikes I've owned to date (with the exception of my Pinarello roadie)
Specialized is dead on with this one, and who in the world can deny that yellow is definitely the fastest color. =)
In a word...rufus. This bike is rufus.
One important thing to note is if you plan on using it on the road, the gearing is great for hills (I live in an area of NYC where San Francisco is the closest comparison to the streets I ride) but if you are on the flats a bigger front chainring might be in order. The specialized strong arms are an excellent crankset however and I can't recommend enough the Avid brakes. Now I just need to get my hands on those sweet Specialized Fireball Team lights and go on night bombing runs to the pub!

$1100.00 | | Purchased At: | Caster's | | Strengths: | -Light as all hell -Great acceleration -Great component value for the price paid | | Weaknesses: | -If you don't like to take it in the stink pipe, think about changing the seat -Wheel set not too strong -Frame is ultra-rigid (I know supposed to be a good thing, but without a suspension seat post can really throw you off the seat...) -Pedals broke within three months of riding | | Similar Products Used: | Nothing close- I was riding a wussy full suspension bike before (Proflex) | | Bike Setup: | Stock | | Bottom Line: | The bike responds well through the turns and climbs rocks like my roommate after a mountain goat in a leather thong.... I mean- IT MOVES!!!! The only problems that I have had so far is the spoke weight does not seem like it is strong enough to take the abuse of my riding, and I have had to get it trued multiple times already- not something that I was expecting. Also- the pedal broke on one side and I had to get that taken care of also within the first three months. The good thing in that was that Specialized did replace both pedals under warranty without a problem. This bike could work well as a cross country racer straight out of the box, and with a little tweaking for your individual riding style can serve you perfectly. I would certainly recommend this rig for anyone with a little caishe to purchase it- or if you just really like mountain goats..... BAAH.....BAAAH...... Who's YOUR favorite New Kid????????

2000 Stumpjumper M2 Pro with Z2 Atom 80, nuff said.
| | Bottom Line: | First off I’d like to say this. If I read one more friggin 5 star review by some nimrod that has owned something for 2 weeks I’m going to pull my eyes out with a rusty chain tool, please wait until the honeymoon is over. I’d be hard pressed to admit that my new expensive piece of gear sucks too.
This bike in a word SUCKS! I’ve had it for 10 months now and have replaced… 1) The rear wheel, the original (Specialized) hub was defective and trashed after 3 months of riding. Specialized in their infinite wisdom only reimbursed me for the hub. I needed a new rear wheel built, this was not covered. Bottom line…They paid $40, the new (XTR) cost me $100 additional. Boo Hiss Specialized!! 2) The Headset, right after I got the new rear wheel the headset started to come loose, Bottom line….trash! It is a piece of crap. Replaced with Cane Creek but my bike shop had to pick up the tab to keep me happy 3) The stock pedals are complete crap so lets not even go there, replaced with Time Atacs, awesome pedals 4) Most recently the specialized crank finally died, it provided me with plenty of chain suck from day one. The big ring bent after a few rides and three of the four bolts holding the small cog are somewhere in the Watchung Reservation. Bottom line, replaced with new LX hollowtech, too soon to tell.
I am so disappointed with this bike. As I mentioned I still have my 92 Stumpy that has the original chain. Until now I loved all Specialized products but this bike really sucks and so does there customer service. I am glad I ordered the Marzocci Z2 because I’m sure the stock SID would be trashed by now. And the Bomber is the best thing on this bike!
Also, I only have about 500 miles on this bike, I’m no downhiller and don’t do any drops over 8 inches. There is no excuse for this amount of failure on a $1600 bike period! I’ll never buy another Specialized product if I can avoid it. Do yourself a favor and buy a frame and spec it out on your own, you will be much better off and save money in the long run.

The SID XC gives good feel over the ripples and will take the hit too. The light weight makes hopping the bike fun. No question that the Avid brakes on this bike are much better than Shimano's best - the pull feels like butter on the Avids, and they are easy to modulate to get just the right braking. The in-house crankset and bars are decent enough, too. I kept the stock seat and am used to it now, although there is room for improvement here.
I got mine for substantially less than MSRP, but even at that amount this bike is the most bang for the buck and an unbelievably capable hardtail - a racer and a weekend destroyer in one. Other good bikes out there but $500+ more for a similar bike.

Every bike company out there seems to have something similar in this price range but they just don't have the best overall package. I may be a little biased though because this is my fourth Specialized bike. The geometry is great for me. I am 5'9" and their 17" frame is the BOMB. The SID is the best fork I have ever owned. Avid's supposed to be sending me a new one, but for now I swapped it out with 1998 LX brakes(still Avid Rim Wrangler pads though). To my surprise the 1998 LX brakes were noticably lighter than the Avid Mags, I've heard about a lot of complaints about the Mags being heavier than speced, but a few grams won't kill me. Still, I'm disapointed in Avid for having misleading if not outright false advertising when on their website (as of 4/7/00) they STILL spec the mags at 139g each. Whatever!! Shimanno specs the XTR's at 398g a pair, 199g each and I know that the XTR's are lighter than the LX's. Avid must be weighing their mag without the pads or bolts and just the lever arms. I mean 139g! Come on! | | Similar Products Used: | Trek 8700 ZX, Gary Fisher X-Caliber | | Bike Setup: | Stock except rear LX brakes. | | Bottom Line: | Specialized has really put together an awsome bike. The frame is very nice. This bike accelerates inredibly fast thanks to the stiff M2 frame and the sexy design of the chainstays as well as the Mavic 517's which are super light and very strong. I rode this bike in a quarry and down some abandoned elevator shafts and I've hit some pretty good sized rocks at very high speeds and the rims are still perfectly true. The sid fork is very plush and there is no problem with air leak like on the earlier SID's. Drivetrain is XTR/XT, I think that speaks for itself...butter! Avid levers and XT shifters are very nice and the other specialized parts on the bike seem to be very good so far too.
