Submitted by Dan a Weekend Warrior from Chicago, IL
Date Reviewed: August 3, 2004
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $500.00
Purchased At:Red Rock, Ely MN
Strengths:Frame, LX rear derailleur, paintwork, exceptional price from dealer
Weaknesses:Deore front derailleur flagrantly not up to the standard of the LX rear, brakes a little weak in the wet, gear shifting a tad stiff on the thumbs.
Similar Products Used:Trek, Raleigh
Bike Setup:Stock pedals were cleats on both sides. Had the dealer substitute toe clips (I didn't see myself wanting to use anything other than street shoes with the bike). Now I know better. Shimano M540 cleats on both sides. Otherwise stock (LX rear, Deore front derailleur, Tektro brakes) except for less aggressive tires now that I'm in the city and more on paved surfaces than off them. The Deore front derailleur is next for the chop.
Bottom Line:This is the first genuinely good bike I have owned and it really makes one appreciate the difference, especially when they leave a token turkey of a component on the bike (front derailleur) to make you appreciate the rest of it. I see a lot of complaints on the site about the headset and shock -- no trouble with mine so far, other than that the boots on the shock don't attach very well. And buying bikes in Northern Minnesota in February brings great things out of dealers. Even if it means you have to test ride them on packed snow.

Price Paid: $350.00
Purchased At:eBay (new in box)
Strengths:Solid frame, nice color (blue/grey), good components for the price.
Weaknesses:No disc mounts on frame.
Bike Setup:Stock, except shifters went out so I upgraded to LX. And I put so slicker tires on (Worm Drive).
Bottom Line:I like it, but I haven't ridden much else, so I can't say much else. The brakes work fine. I know a lot of people say V brakes are crap if they aren't Avid or Shimano, but the Tektro work fine for me and I ride a lot of steep terrain.

Purchased At:Jack's Bikes (year old model)
Strengths:Price, Looks, Durable Frame
Weaknesses:Fork quality and seat comfort
Similar Products Used:None
Bottom Line:I'm a heavy rider. I did not like the Manitou Fork. The fork was too soft. Fork started leaking fluid and no longer adjusted. Had it rebuilt. Fork did not last very long before same thing happened again. Going to replace my fork with a Marzocchi. Other than the fork, I beat the snot out the bike it and I'm a pretty heavy rider. It has taken a lot of abuse for this level of bike. Trade off is in the weight. I thought it to be a bit heavy.

Favorite Trail:too many to list
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $875.00
Purchased At:Cyclo 69
Strengths:The frame--it is solid and can stand up to just about anything. Handles really well in all conditions, and is great on tough uphills
Weaknesses:The seat and grips were useless. Minor issues. Brakes aren't great, but adequate.
Similar Products Used:Enduro Pro, Stumpjumper FSR
Bike Setup:LX derailleurs, lots of "Specialized" brand stuff (hubs, cranks, pedals), Manitou fork.
Bottom Line:I bought this bike knowing I wanted to get more serious about biking, and this bike took me there without any problems. I am now always looking for bigger hills, steeper descents, and longer rides. One thing is certain--the bike will be able to handle it.

The frame is the thing on this bike--Other bikes I tried when I bought this one felt as if you are strangely perched atop the thing, whereas on this bike you feel as if you are one with the bike. It is solid, but still forgiving on the weight, and it handles great at all speeds and in all conditions.

My next bike is certain to be a signficant upgrade, but for someone who wants to get serious about the sport, likes to go hard but not that often, or for someone without a big budget but looking for great value, this bike is a hands-down winner!

Strengths:great, responsive frame. rear LX derailer has never been adjusted after 2000 miles of hard riding.
Weaknesses:front deore derailer seizes periodically. tektro brakes are crap. the wheelset is very strong, but super heavy.
Bottom Line:i used to ride a $1500 khs team frame, but then it got stolen, and i got married (i.e. cost concious), and bought this bike because it looked to be a great deal. definitely a lot heavier than more expensive bikes, but i have been impressed with how the lx rear derailler has held up. i love the frame, the ride feels great, very responsive. need to upgrade the brakes and wheelset. otherwise its race ready... been tested a few times and had no problems at all. esp. good on the climbs! this is a good buy for an entry to mid level rider who plans to upgrade through the years. the frame is worthy of the upgrades.

Price Paid: $575.00
Purchased At:Cross Country Cycle
Strengths:Color Scheme, Light for cost, Rims
Weaknesses:Chaingrings, Chainrings, Did I mention the Chainrings
Bike Setup:Stock except lightweight tubes and diff tires
Bottom Line:Great bike for typical trail riding. If you like me and want to jump, go over stumps and everything else. Well you might want to go up a few models. The bike is great for the price. however those chain rings MUST GO. I broke the small and the middle rings. Shifting was sloppy and not to responsive. As far as feel and handling. I loved it. Loved it cause I got a Stump Jumper Comp now. I busted the chain on this bike in no time. But for its intentended purpouse its a great trail bike to have fun with. Just stay away from the hard stuff. Or if you do then dont do it everytime like I did. I tore this bike up in less than one year of riding. But I cant complain It held up through tome tuff stuff besides the Chain Rings....Isnt Sr Suntour supposed to be making bike parts for little kids. Cause I think they should stop making parts for Big Kids!!!!!

Favorite Trail:Orcutt/ Arthropod area
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $750.00
Purchased At:FairWheel bikes
Strengths:Light, fast, strong, love the way it rides, tough, fits me perfectly (I'm tall), REALLY does climb the rough stuff, and steers and handles well when the going gets tricky. Just a joy to ride from day 1, as far as I'm concerned. Decent price. Great paint job and colors/graphics.
Weaknesses:Brakes weak, stock tires weak, small chainring weak, bb weak, chain weak, shifts sloppily at times, also, get stronger bars if you're a big rider and like the rough stuff.
Similar Products Used:Santa Fe Wolf- ca. 1990- my brother has it now.
Bike Setup:Wheels by Fairwheel's wheel guru, who made magic wheels tough enough for a big dude like me, long Icon stem, Michelin Wildgripper front, Conti Veritcal Pro rear, XT BB, stainless steel Raceface small chainring, Wellgo pedals.
Bottom Line:I do love this bike, and would describe it as a real hardtail, perfect for those who appreciate such things. It does really well on the Tucson area trails- rocky and steep and sandy and hotter that hell. And I'm happy riding back and forth to work, and on those rides where I choose to ride cross-city to get to the interesting stuff.

I had to put a few parts on it, e.g. the bb failed in 3 months, I'm fairly obsessed about having good tires and magic wheels, but the only limitation on this bike is me.

Fairwheel was happy to order the 23" inch frame (I'm 6'6") and put on a long stem so I could see if I liked it, while the Cannondale dealer told me I'd have to buy if they ordered it while simultaneously sniffing and looking down their nose at me. Another dealer laughed and said "you'll NEVER find a frame that fits you." So I'm pretty happy w/ Specialized and the dealer too. I dream about riding this bike, and really I have been on the coolest, roughest rides for almost 2 years and had a great deal fun and built my skills considerably.

Strengths:Solid entry-level hard tail, has held up pretty well so far, the wheels i couldnt keep true for at first but after having to do it 5 or 6 times they, contine to be spot on.
Weaknesses:The brakes were the first thing that needed to go. The headset was loose from day one and needed to be way too tight to eliminate the problem. The manitou fork wore out after a year. Shimano chains are evil, swich to sachs now!
Similar Products Used:Gary fisher kaitai, trek 6000
Bike Setup:rockshox SID xc, XTR v-brakes, XT dirvetain
Bottom Line:A good beginner mountain bike if u dont know how serious you're gonna get. Its not that light, even after all the upgrades ive done its just below 26 lbs. Basically its stuck with me and taken eveything ive thrown at it. I started racing and its keep me out of last place, but the rest is up to me. The bike fills the gap between casual mountain biker and racer. If ya got the cash get somthing a little nicer but if ya dont this will suit you just fine.

Strengths:Never mind pushing it up those big hills, it'll probably climb them better than you can. it is also very light and very responsive.
Weaknesses:The seat and pedals will have to go. the only other problem i found was, the chain rubs the front derailuer, bat it's tolerable and it only does it in 2 or 3 of the 27 gears.

Weaknesses:flexy crank with rings that wear fast under hard use

Strengths:Very strong frame for the money (£600). Good forx, good drive train, great wheels.
Weaknesses:BRAKES!!!! Just don't try to ride this bike in the wet! and the headset is pretty crap...
Similar Products Used:GT timberline with RockShox Quadra 10's HUGELY mod'd to give descent travel but wear out in 3 months. Unfortunately it got stolen!! But hey, I got a WWAAYY better bike insteat.
Bike Setup:stock appart from my all new 50mm Art stem, and soon to be Mavic D521 rims on XT hubs and XT v-brakes and levers. Replaced BB with XT cuz it was only £20 and well worth it.
Bottom Line:This is a great bike. I'm 5'3, and female, and so had REAL trouble actually finding a bike to fit me. The 15" frame is perfect, and since I fitted a tiny stem, its the right lenth too!
Its really light, (I would guess at about 26-27lb), damn tough and durable, but change the headset...in order that the forx don't slop I have to have it done up so tight...and it likes to let sand in at every opertunity. Its good if you wanna start out free-riding, it can take jumps/drops, and moderate downhill (I'm only 140Lb thou..) and it has one of the best paint-jobs around (orange and black)

Basically, if you want a great bike in the £500-£700 range, and you are prepared to make minor upgrades get this. I would STRONGLY recomend it to the shorter riders out there...

(do check that the forx have damping oil thou...coz hime came without!)

Strengths:Smooth ride, and excellent geometry for downhill and xc. Nice bike for the money. I've had no mechanicals in a summer that has included: 24 hours of Snowhsoe, Hi-Tec race, and another smaller Adventure race in Blue Marsh, plus various weekend rides.
Weaknesses:Handlebar flexs when pulling hard. The seat is hard and uncomfortable. Definitely the first upgrade necessary if you are logging any serious miles. I ride 10-20 miles of singletrack on the weekend (I have to work other days) and usually put on some road miles during the week. I swapped the saddle for a body geometry comp which I ride on my road bike and it is worth the money.
Similar Products Used:Various Treks and Gary Fisher
Bike Setup:Stock minus the pedals and the saddle. I bought the bike for 700 minus the pedals, since I just used the ones off of my previous bike. Specialized should start putting the body geometry saddles on their bikes, but then they wouldn't make as much money when people upgrade.
Bottom Line:The best bike I could find in the price range. Although we all want more for our money then we actually get, the Rockhopper delivers a nice ride and solid componentry for beginner riders and people interested in starting to race. I'd buy a more expensive bike, but my wife would kill me. So if you are in the same situation as me (married with a life outside of mtnbiking), I suggest getting this bike.

As I said above, I have had no major mechanicals in three races. I also recommend Hite's Bike Shop in Butler, PA; where I bought the bike. The setup was excellent and they do free lifetime tuneups.

I have been beating it up on some of the worlds best trails here in Northern California and it just seems to want more and more. I know it's just a matter of time before fatigue sets in and something gives way but until then I'll keep riding. This bike is a great value and I recommend it for anyone just starting in the sport. You will get a strong bike with lot's of upgradability.

Bottom Line:This is a follow-up from my previous review post:

******************************************************

PEOPLE! When you buy this bike ask your LBS to swap or change the fork and you can pay the difference! Please change the fork, mine fell apart after 10 days of road riding! The fork was "defective", well crap from my point of view. My LBS was very helpful, they gave me a new one but I didn't want it so i paid the difference between the RS Judy Race and the Manitou Magnum R and walked out with a Judy Race 100mm travel fork! (it's so plush, + damping adjust *external*)

The bike rides very nice now! Very good for the price but i'm thinking of selling it cuz this sport's getting boring.

IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN BUYING THIS BIKE USED 15 times E-MAIL ME!

The headset's gotta go cuz it's making wierd noises and the seat's pissing me off! SWAP THEM WHEN BUYING THE BIKE!!!

Bottom Line: very nice frame, componentry's ok,

The bike's great if you change the fork (i recommend swapping the Manitou for a Judy Race, SL or XC), Get discs if you can (goes for any mtb).

BUY IT! you won't regret it after you get your first tune up! Take my advice though, change the fork, seat and headset(if you can). I'm happy with it so far exept that i need money for a car and need to sell it. :*(

Happy Trails,
Antoine

ps: 3 flamin' Chilis because of the fork, seat and headset!

Strengths:PRICE!!!! I got mine for 520 bucks just by talking the guy down a little bit and also i got rid of the clipless peddles in exchange for aluminum peddles with clips and straps( i like clips and straps better)
Weaknesses:i havent had mine for too long but as of now it is holding up like mountain goat

Bottom Line:This bike kicks some major butt!! it allows for a lot of control and has a true racing stance about it. this bike is perfect for the intermediate rider, or even a starter that wants a hell of a bike and has some money to afford a better bike. it is a hell of a lot better then the treks and gts and similar bikes in its price range. the geometry is wonderful this bike looks and feels solid.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $700.00
Purchased At:Lakeside Bicycles
Strengths:-Frame
-Wheels
-COLOR (!!! The orange kicks ass, the blue is ugly)
-Shock (Manitou Magnum R) is decent
-Rides nicely =>
Weaknesses:-Tektro brakes suck. So do the levers.
-Some chainline/crank/cassette issues, see below
-Fork boots won't stay down (MINOR issue)
Similar Products Used:Demo'ed the Raleigh M600, Fisher Kaitai, GT Backwoods, Trek 6500 & 7000, Specialized Rockhopper A1 FSR
Bike Setup:Mostly Stock, except for:

-Salsa MotoAce 15 degree 120mm stem
-Specialized Body Geometry MTB Comp Saddle
-Longer Bottom Bracket (see below)
-*NICE* Sachs Chain (see below again)
-Specialized Dirt Rodz barends
Bottom Line:I bought this bike as an entry-level mountain bike, to see how I liked the sport, and hopefully someday soon, to race on. I love it. I love the color, I love the feel, I love the way it accelerates and the way it goes over the trail. I would highly recommend this bike to beginners, as it seems to be the best bike package in the price range.

As for the other bikes I rode while trying to pick, the Raleigh M600 is a helluva lot of bike for the money, but when you get down to it, the emphasis is on selling bikes rather than performance. The Trek 6500 and 7000, in my mind, are the same deal. The ride is very nice and smooth, but seemed more suited for bike path and street riding that trails.

If you do pick up one of these fine bicycles, make sure you have your shop go over the drivetrain with a fine-toothed comb. The fine wrenches at Lakeside Bicycles in Lake Oswego, OR, especially JT Lackey (I think is his last name) were extraordinarily helpful in getting my bike set up correctly. First, there was a chainline issue, that caused the chain to skip and have other problems. Then it was something else, and something else, I don't really know the details. The end result of it all is that I have had 5 chains on it, all replaced for free, a longer bottom bracket, and some other minor tweaks. It all works right for now... so I'm happy as a clam.

Bottom line: a great entry- to intermediate-level hardtail for a good price.

Favorite Trail:mud and jumps
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:stiff frame, sweet paint job, well thought out geometry, smooth components, rims r still true even with my idiotic riding, shifters are very crisp, clipless pedals
Weaknesses:forks are little too soft, headset's making cracks, the seat's kinda stiff but i got used to it, there's no disc brake mount on the frame, clunking sound from front tire on a side hit
Similar Products Used:Kona Cinder Cone, Gary Fisher Big Sur, Giant Atx, Specialized stumpjumper, GT Backwoods, a few Norcos and a few wal-mart bikes
Bike Setup:stock for now but headset's going, Front Brake's gotta go too.
Bottom Line:
I love this thing, i've shopped for a bike for a while and i liked the setup on this one, with the LX back and some Deore. I'm still a little on edge with the Specialized Crankset but i'll ride it til it breaks. I got mine for $1300 canadian and considering all the other bikes in that price range this one kicked all deir a$$es. It didn't have the glow in the dark crap that Konas have but it's alot smoother and more rigid than a Kona.

About the schocks......well Manitou Magnum R's are ok for the price range but Judys would have been apprecated (take a hint Specialized). They're a little too soft and i didn't see much of a diff between the Magnum R and Magnum even though i got the R's except that in the cheaper magnums the adjuster knob falls off in the store.

Components - LX rear and Specialized Crankset + Deore front der. Smooth with one problem. The chain rubs against the front deraileur in high gear. It can be fixed with a pair of pliers and a few ummm... "bending procedures".

Brakes - ok, yes they squeak but they also stop pretty good. I'm not a big fan of Tek-Tro's but as long as i can slow down dey're good. I'm upgrading to a Hayes hydraulic disc in the front when i go in for a tune up next week.

Bottom like is that the bike is one of the best u'll get 4 da money. I race it and it's handled well up and down the hills, especially up. As a wise man once said on here "climbs like a monkey on crack". U get clipless pedals too. Overall I'm pretty happy with it. I didn't spend a fortune either. IT TURNS HEADS! FLAMIN' ORANGE!!

Buy it and u won't be dissapointed. Frame's sweet! it's around 28lbs but not that bad considering the thick tubes on the frame and the mid class components.

IT's a SPECIALIZED!!!

I also rode a Kona and Voodoo in the same price range. Chose the A1 Comp FS on riders and shops advice. This was a good choice. It climbs very well and tracks much better with the new wheel set. I am very happy with the bike..... now for the good stuff.... Talked my wife into letting me buy a Santa Cruz Superlite. My wife is taking this bike in to have the shop convert it to her size. This bike climbs hills with no problem at all and maneuvers down them just as good.

The biggest weakness I can find so far is the the front derailer. It does not shift smooth and I am definitely upgrading to an XT one soon. Also the brakes aren't the best ones either but they'll do for a while anyway.

Weaknesses:Definitely get a new seat. The Body Geometry is great. I would eventually like to get a set of road wheels for toolin around town. The off-road wheels and tires are great though, they really bite and you can really hear the rear crunching over roots on occasion.

Strengths:A rugged bike that is a great jumper. Stock Magnum forks are pretty good if you ask me (I weigh 165). Brakes are not the best I've tried but are more than adequate. The Ritchey Rock Comp rims have held up great so far.
Weaknesses:Although I never tried it, the stock seat looked weak. I wish the shifting was a little crisper.

Bottom Line:This bike is well worth the price. I've got 85 hours of fairly aggressive off-road riding on this bike since I got it, and so far it's been bulletproof. It's also a blast to ride. I'm glad I went with the Comp model instead of the base A1, you get better components, especially tires and rims. My dealer offers the option of swapping out the stock seat for an upgrade at a discount, which I did. I really like the Body Geometry seat. I thought this bike might need some more upgrades, but now I don't think so except for maybe the shifters. I would recommend this bike to everyone except for MAYBE the most aggressive 5% of riders.
