Submitted by Biker Girl a Weekend Warrior from Seattle, WA
Date Reviewed: March 7, 2003
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1400.00
Purchased At:local shop
Strengths:Awesome Bike, enough said.
Weaknesses:Repeating record - specialized components going bad fast.
Bike Setup:Stock '99 stumpjumper pro 21" frame except - Mavic Rims, new tires, new XT crank, new bottom bracket, new clipless pedals, new grips, girl friendly saddle, and bar ends.
Bottom Line:If you want a light hardtail that's durable and great to upgrade, this is a major contender. Ya, some of the specialized components aren't the greatest (minus 1 chili). I broke the pedals, BB got really rough, and I broke teeth on the chainrings. So, if you are buying it used, check some of these items out before buying. But, they aren't that expensive to replace and have served me long enough to know that I want to keep this frame and basic set-up for a long time.
Given the rest of the groupo, I am very happy with my purchase and will probably be riding this frame for many years to come. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend buying one used.

Favorite Trail:Tipperary Creek
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1400.00
Strengths:This is the most bombproof bike I have ever owned. Without question, the specialized "hardcore" wheelset that came on the bike is from another planet. I ride HARD and have been through some incredible sh.t with this bike and have trued the wheels less than 10 times. I am 6' 2" and weigh 195lbs. There is nothing on this bike that wasn't perfect except the seat, which fell apart rather quickly.
Weaknesses:None at all.
Bike Setup:Stock, except Time ATAC Carbon pedal and Selle Italia Genuine Gel seat.
Bottom Line:Buy a Specialized if you want the most durable and best performing bike for your money. The only reason I will switch next season is to buy a custom DEAN Ace FS.

Favorite Trail:Des Plaines River Trail
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $800.00
Purchased At:Used, friend, he paid $999 at Out Spoke'n
Strengths:Excellent smooth ride, good looks, very durable
Weaknesses:Crank issues (creaking, will need to replace soon, I fear), stock saddle might as well be made of concrete.
Bike Setup:bar ends, conti town& country invert treads, switched l/r brake levers, switched crown for "faster" gearing (11-23), terry men's liberator saddle.
Bottom Line:This is a really excellent bike. I am a 6'3" 270lb rider, and have had no problems (except the crank-creak) after riding some serious miles. A week-long 500 mile tour went absolutely flawlessly. I find that I can "hang with the roadies" if I pump my tires up to max, the geometry is comfortable enough to ride no-hands, but get on some trail and it handles like a dream. Light enough to hop over medium-sized obstacles without a problem, quick enough to avoid getting into trouble most of the time, tough enough to shrug it off when trouble is inevitable.
I hope this bike never gets potato-chipped, I will ride it forever!

Strengths:i love this frame, so stiff, responsive and fast. sid's work a charm. The feel of this bike is just right. Great stock v's and good groupset. xtr/xt
Weaknesses:the specialized own products are a bit poor, especially the cranks and bottom bracket. My left crank has broken twice so i went for a race face.

Strengths:light weight, very efficient climber, fast
Weaknesses:the cranks (especially the rings), manitou fork, the wheels came out of true frequently, worst bott bracket i've ever had on any bike,
Similar Products Used:spec hard rock, rockhopper, fisher mt. tam, k2 zed-x
Bike Setup:chris king race-lites, full race-face,mokey light risers, terry fly saddle, python lights(great tires), thomson post 98' sid, rapid rise, etc.
Bottom Line:i love this bike, after my old school rigid hardtails, this thing was a rocket, much stiffer than the fisher, really had to experiment w/tires and saddles to make it livable for my clydesdale carcass, i've been thrashing this bike for a while now, it's actually the 98 model, everyone that rides it comments on how great it climbs, steers a little too quickly but thats from ditching the 80mm manitou and using the 63mm sid, got a great deal on it, couldn't justify 400$ more for the s-works which is only 1 oz lighter, if you want a hardtail and don't mind a very stiff frame-this is the one for you; however i recomend BUYING ONLY THE FRAME AND BUILDING IT UP YOURSELF BECAUSE SPEC CUTS MANY CORNERS WHEN SPEC'G THEIR BIKES IE: HOUSE BRAND PARTS, 5 FLAMERS BECAUSE I GOT SUCH A GOOD DEAL

Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $1000.00

Strengths:good parts mix, light, stiff, climber par excellance!
Weaknesses:wheels could be stiffer, but good enough for me(150 lbs)
never used the specialized brand crank set
Bike Setup:thompson seatpost, selle itallia flite, sid xc, S-works riser bar, yeti hardcore grips w/odi lockons, LX crankset, speedplay frogs, cateye computer
Bottom Line:I'm in love!!!

This puppy rocks: fast, tracks like a bandit, climbs like a goat. If twisty singletrack is your thing - buy one. I got mine used for a great price and I'm sure there's plenty to be had in this price range in the marketplace. I'll never give this baby up unless it's to trade up to an M4 frame. Only up grades planned for the future are better wheels (crossmax?)and bottom bracket/crankset (race face or xt hollowtech).

Ride hard, ride often, respect the trail rules and the newbies/yuppies who keep the industry in dough so they can crank out a gem or two (like the Stumper Pro)for reasonable prices! peace baby

Strengths:Light. Well stocked. Overall good component selection to be had. Looks cool enough.
Weaknesses:Bad stock seat and rear hub.
Similar Products Used:Trek 8500. Fisher Mt. Tam
Bike Setup:Stock. Added bar ends, New Saddle, Time ATAC pedals. Bontager Valiant Rear wheel with XTR rear hub.
Bottom Line:I have been riding this bike for two years now, and I have to say that it has not let me down. I have customized a little bit from when I originally bought it, but for the most part I like everything that came stock.
Everyhting has held together quite well. I have raced on this bike, and it performed excellently.
The only complaint is that I am currently on the thrid rear wheel on this bike. The first one I destroyed, so that is my fault. The second wheel was just a cheep temp. until I built up the one that is currently there.
I would recomend this bike to anyone who wants to just have a fast ride, and is thinking of doing some racing.

Strengths:-super fast
-nice nimble handler
-was a good deal
-very stiff frame good in some circumstances
Weaknesses:-every non-shimano part on the bike
-hubs,cranks,bb,stem,handlebar,seat,headset
Similar Products Used:97 Rocky Mountain blizzard with a 97 bomber z-2
Bike Setup:-99 M2-Pro with race-face cranks,bb,handlebar, stem, headset and some xt hubs built with some mavic x-517 citrons
Bottom Line:this bike was a very nice bike when I first got it but now I'm totally thinking different. It is a nice handling bike and super fast but I ride this bike very hard everyday I don't have a road bike to train with so I ride trails everyday, this thing creeks super bad now ( I think it's going to break soon ) and almost every part than specialized made broke with no warranty even the crankset. I'm looking into buying another blizzard because for 2001 it's got 853 tubing and I have full race-face parts for it. Around here in Victoria the trails are a little bit too rough for a frame like the M2.

Strengths:great value for your money - you will always have an excellent frame to upgrade on
Weaknesses:bottom bracket, specialized cranks, and wheels (one hub is XT and the other Parallax), tires
Similar Products Used:Schwinn Homegrown, older Stumpies
Bike Setup:stock w/ the exception of tires - came w/ Specialized comp tires which blew apart after the third ride. other weakness points mentioned above to be swapped out by next spring.
Bottom Line:You can't beat this bike for the money. Don't buy this bike and expect special bells and whistles. This is a rock-solid hardtail. The frame is super light and stiff. Allows you to really feel the trail and climb like a goat. Other reviews mention how crappy the Specialized components. Personally, they don't bother me - you can always swap out the broken/ineffective stuff.

Strengths:-super light and fast
-the frame
-the overall ride is very nice and controlled
Weaknesses:-seat
-crank/bb
-the wheels suck
-both of my quick releases broke in two different races ( DNF's)
-the specialized comp shoes the black/yellow ones are garbage I've broken 3 pairs and working on the 4th. The sole keeps cracking and specialized takes forever on warranty.
-headset
Similar Products Used:-97 hammer race
Bike Setup:99 M2-Pro with race face crank/bb bar and bontrager super x's.
Bottom Line:this bike seriously rips. M2 is fast and very light riding. The geometry realy helps your descending and climbing yet still offering a comfortable ride. I was thinking about an fsr/xc comp but then I lifted it and totally liked my M2 more. the fsr's are realy slow compared to my M2 and they aren't even that comfortable either. I'm a die hard hardtail fan. If you want quality at a decent price you will not beat this bike and if you do then tell me.

WHY NO DOUBLE BUTTED SPOKES ON WHEELS? With a few minor tweaks, this is one fast light (22lb) bombproof ride! Lots-o-fun. Strengths:Tough Frame! Handles great XS. Light and affordable.
Weaknesses:Most stuff made by specialized other than the frame is terrible. I had the kevlar tires 3 days before ripping a 2 inch hole in the side wall. The specialized bottom bracket died in 3 months (replaced with XT). The headset has to be adjusted a little to often. I also ripped two teeth off the front crank, never has happened with my previous Shimano experience.

Make yourself Happy with a set of 1.9 Kevlar Velociraptors. A nicen affordable light cross country ride. Shocks are good too, no problems there. Buy the frame and build your own way to happiness!

Bottom Line:I race and ride my bike everyday on the local singletrack. This bike dosen't hardly get a day off. It's realy stood up well. Nice and fast and a great singletrack bike. The only few problems were with almost all the specialized crap hanging on the bike and the big ugly useless white and black XT brakes. Once I put on the avid 25, a little cheaper brakeset the bike started to work wonders. I love this bike it flies. I have a few pairs of bontrager tires and they are way better than the specialized ones. ( the revolt ST2's are the best ). I'll take one off the value rating because I had to replace so much on the bike.

Bottom Line:I love the bike . . . well balanced, light, does well on tight turns, steep climbs, rough decents.
However, Specialized is really contaminating a fine bike with their hardware. In just 4 months, I have blown out the rear hub, the bottom bracket, the saddle rails, the middle chain ring, pedals (replaced cause they suck), and the rear skewer . . . all Specialized parts. Bottom Line:Bike is a great climber. Handling is the best I've experinced on a hard tail. XT\XTR nine speed drivetrain works with no problems. All the spcialized parts: Hubs, BB, Cranks, and Headset suck. The bike set up how I have it now has perfomed flawlessly. The new fork has given me some trouble. I had to returen it after one ride. Marzocci took care of the fork in a timely manner. The turn around time was about a week and a half. The old DH tires that are 3/4 worn, taken off of the STS
Friend's old XTR rear wheel
Avid 1.0 brakes
Bottom Line:This is my XC training/trails bike now. I bought this about 3 1/2 years ago. It's awesome... indestructable. I had a dual crown fork on it for 2 years. It's also pretty light (I guess... I wouldn't really know.. I'm a DHer - anything is lighter than my DH/Slalom bikes)

bob, who posted below, does not know what he is talking about. The bike got killed for several possible reasons:

1) The FR4 from stratos (he calls it FR5) puts huge stresses on the top tube, much more than the stock single crown forks. Even the X-vert doesn't put as much stress on it. He should've used a Spooky DS frame if he wanted to use that fork.

2) Rider technique... If he had landed on the rear wheel aobut 1/4 second before the front, there wouldn't have been as much stress put on the front of the frame, the frame wouldn't have snapped.

There... this bike doesn't break unless you screw around with it recklessly. I'm 185 lbs and the frame's fine. I brought it everywhere: northstar, mammoth, monterey, big bear

Looks great, rides sweet. I am so pleased that I went the extra mile and bought this bike.
Weaknesses:Seat: I really do not want to get into the details here.

Swap it out ASAP.

Others have complained about the peddals, the middle ring, the grips, the good-but-too-slippery-for-them-tires, and the high-maintenance (but possibly worth it) SID, but after talking to many owners, all seems variable, workable, subjective and/or minor... except the seat, which would be better left off the bike and replaced an *actual* chisel (at least I could have used the chisel when I bought a real seat).

I gave it a new middle ring, added IBIS rosie-palm bar-ends, ***WTB SST '98 seat***, new rubber here and there, kept it lubed and pounded it with 222 over the limit pounds of Australian Rules Football playing, Rookie-riding, recklessness. I am surprised how strong and hardy this bike is and its speed still makes me giddy.

I still think Specialized is mixing cocaine in with their metal-matrix... this thing cranks! Go to your bike store and get the 99' black M2 Pro at a steal!

Bottom Line:Climbs and accelerates very well thanks to the stiffness of the frame. SID really smooths out the trail. Shifting is crisp and smooth. Just make sure the rear tire pressure isn't to high otherwise your butt will take a pounding. I weigh 145 lbs and rear tire pressures between 30-40 pounds work well for most rough trails. You would be hard pressed to find another bike this great at a similair price.

Bottom Line:I've only had this bike for about a month, but I ride it often and I ride it hard. My first complaints concerned the cockpit--a little too high and wide. The solution was simple. I reversed the stem and hacksawed the handlebar. Now it feels much more aggressive. The stock Specialized clipless pedals did not work well with my Shimano cleats, so I exchanged them at the time of purchase for som bar ends and a pair of super light tubes. As with most bikes, the rear brakes feel mushy in comparison to the front, so I added a rear brake booster. This stiffened things up dramatically. Parts selection by Specialized is smart and fully race-ready. It's one of the best XC racers in this price range.

Man if this bike had wings I swear it could fly, this thing rips. I swapped the SID XC for a 98 Z-2 Atom Bomb and it is now even better than it was with the SID. The bomber now turned it from 22.76 lbs to 23.44 lbs but it still flies, a lot more comfortable than with the SID and it is so fast you won't even notice having the bomber. I ride a lot of hardpack steep trails and the tires are just as fast as my old panaracer mach ss's were but the only dofference is, is that now I can actually stop because I have the small knobs not like my old slicks. I'd reccomend this bike to anyone who has $1599 and a desire to go fast up or dowm hill. This thing is an awesome climber, a little rough on rocky descents but that is only because it is a hardtail though. I also have panaracer fire xc pros and that is all I need now the bike is perfect. I Think specialized is adding some cocaine to their ceramics lately and it R_O_C_K_S! The geometry (from S-works etc.) turns every crank into speed. I am 223lbs and this frame does not care. Check out the specs on this thing... can you say shhhhhift? A stumpy-owning buddy of mine picked the bike up with one hand, covered his face with his other hand and just started laughing... can u say ENVY? The only thing I swapped out was the front brakepads (which were fine but my comp. WTB's are more quiet) and added some Ibis Rosie bar-ends. Mine came with the Team master/etc. tires (don't they all?) and so I am in the weird position of having no uprgrades to drool over, whatsoever. Okay, some SID-red Raceface cranks maybe, but properly installed XT's work great! The bike is so fast, I feel no temptation to want anything more... how could this be? I think I am done shopping! I have been racing for about 3 years now and I have had 2 other bikes before this one and this one by far outperforms all the rest that I have owned in the past. This thing flies up the hills and it rips on the descents. The m2-frame is super stiff and it climbs very wel and yet if the rider makes a mistake the frame is forgiving enought that is won't hurt you in the process from being too stiff. The fork is the only little drawback it takes too much time and effort to get it all set up right but once you get that the bike is a dream to ride. The wheels are also another feature I realy like because the new stout rear hub for 99 is realy light strong and durable. man this bike is a realy nice ride all together. At $1599 u.s. and 22.76lbs ( 18 inch frame ) this bike is a great deal and it is a great bike to race and equally good for trail riding. I'd recomend it for anyone who want to get a new light weight ride man this is the one.

I've had six different mtb bikes in my seven years of mountain biking (#5 was a 98 stumpjumper). The jumperstump is without a doubt the best bike I've owned and the least amount I've spent. The frame geometry and material are perfectly suited to the tight, technical type of riding that I do. The short chainstay, relatively steep headtube angle, and superstiff bottom bracket make this bike a quick handler and fast accelerator. For $1599, it's tough to complain about the heavy in-house specialized parts because they work. This bike is a great all-around bike because it handles best at speed and doesn't flinch in technical situations. I've found that the recommended rock shox air pressure settings are pretty stiff--so, I run the main commpression about 10-15 psi less and the negative spring about 10 psi more.

This is last year's S-Works with improved MAX Tailbone chainstays. My previous bike was a '97 Stumpjumper and the biggest difference is the tapered and butted seatstays - the ride is noticeably more comfortable and faster than ever. The gears and brakes are incredibly responsive, with the only downside being the grip level of the tires in the wet, but who cares this bike is so light and handles so well it's a joy to ride.If anyone knows of good trails around the guildford, farnham or camberley area please email me.

I've had it about a month and a half now. This thing just wants to GO! Stock @ 24 lbs, weighed at the shop in person. They were hanging all over it just to look at it. This bike flies, the air you can get is unreal, and the handling is exceptional. Now for the drawbacks:The stock tires are Dirt Control/Master, which are good for hardpark/road conditions. Sure they're fast, but you can't blast a DH or a turn as hard. So change 'em out for meatier tires, like the Team Control/Master combo. The SID shock is nice and light, and it works. The only thing you have to be careful of is the air pressure before _every_ ride. If you don't you can seriously wipe - this bike really likes to move fast, and is so light that it can lift off the ground easily at high speed. Combine this with low shock air pressure, and poor tire gripping and you'll get the picture stamped right on your forehead. This bike is for the serious rider because it wants to go FAST! - Right off the mountain (change the tires please, my friends catch me on the DH now cause I can't blast without traction).

Bottom Line:

I got mine a long time ago and I only rode it twice, man did it kick the shit. i mean this thing wants you to climbs and it's almost like it laughs at the descents I mean the geometry is totally set up for raceing and mine has a few specifications on it and those are Race Face Cranks, and an LP carbon flat bar and it weighs around 23 pounds. I had an old indy and the SID is a 100% improvement the action of the new SID is nothing wile flat in the seat climbing but it is buttery smooth going throug the rough stuff. I do a little bit of trials riding and this bike os awesome for showing off, it is a great jumper as well. My one complaints is the sound it makes while hitting unmoveable objects at speed and flinging off them it makes a loud thudding sounds and it's not my tires pressure either because they are rock hard at 63psi's. If I could give it more than 5 chili's I would.
