Date Reviewed: October 27, 2001
Favorite Trail:Any and all
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $600.00
Purchased At:Oakville Cycle and Sports
Strengths:Excellent package for cost. Very durable and fast. A great everywhere anything bike! I ride absolutely everything - trails - hills - road - race - down/up hill.
Weaknesses:Fork flex when braking excessively(often avoiding cars) Front derailer sucks chain up from third to second shifts. Serious racers should look for a more serious bike right from the start but anyone wanting a race capable bike they can ride whereever whenever THIS IS IT !
Similar Products Used:Norco Rampage was another consideration but had less for more money...
Bike Setup:Front-STX-RC Rear-LX stock with new front pads and rear tire after over 1000km !!! last summer. It takes a mojor beating. I had riser bars from new but otherwise stock.
Bottom Line:This is the best bike you can get in this price range. It is VERY durable and has never left me stranded on a trail or road EVER! It has lasted many km of hard aggressive riding which it probably wasn't intended for. It has great shifting, braking, and handling along with last for ever solidness. It has survived too many crashes avoiding dam card and has convinced me that specialized makes amazing bikes. I've had no problems what so ever.
A great bike! GREAT BUY

Strengths:Great Frame, best part about the bike
rapid fire shifting

Weaknesses:Brakes, dia compe something, had to upgrade to 2001 deore lx v-brakes and they are real nice
Fork, too bouncy
Tires, slip in trails

Bike Setup:LX rear; STX-RC front, Jett T-2 fork
Bottom Line:Overall a good bike. With a few upgrades this bike could be a great hardtail. Rides nicely. Fork and brakes aren't good. If I had to give it a grade it would be a B.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $420.00
Purchased At:Sports Hut
Strengths:-Very Durable
-Great bang for the buck
-Well built frame
-Good setup for all types of riding
-Nice crank. Like the originality
Weaknesses:-No name brakes take away some bragging rights
-Good hubs, but could do better on the rims
-bad pedals, seat as hard as a rock (ha ha, get it?)
-Have had problems with the STX-RC front derailler. Can't downshift too fast while pedaling or chain will go. I suggest to upgrade if you get the chance.
-crappy fork
Similar Products Used:Raleigh M-80
Bike Setup:LX front derailler, new seat, time alium pedals, bar ends, rear mud fender, Mt Baldy Specalized tires
Bottom Line:A nice bike for anyone, really. I'm 15 years old, about 5' 3" and I ride a 13". Works nice if you put a few upgrades on. Beautiful on the road, and can take off road but if you want true performance I suggest a better shock. That is the real short-coming of this bike. But Overall, this bike has a sweet feel and is totally worth the money.

Favorite Trail:Moab
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $650.00
Strengths:Bang for the buck. Good frame to build upon. Nice geometry for intermediates. Relatively cheap (pricewise)
Weaknesses:Cheap pedals, weak derailleurs (Grip Shift), cheap fork (Rock Shox Jett)
Bike Setup:Specialized frame, Rock Shox Jett fork, Velociraptor tires (addon), Nashbar clipless pedals (addon), suspension seatpost (addon)
Bottom Line:Good basic MTB frame, angles are not too extreme for beginners. Driveline is hard to keep aligned for optimum shifting especially the front shifter. Bargain basement front shock is limited in adjustment. No braze-ons for disc brake conversions without major rework. Soaks up the rouch stuff and keeps on trucking. Climbing ability - average, the relaxed head angle makes tight switchbacks a bit of work. Overall a good starter bike, can be made into a pretty decent bike with better components. On the Flamin' Chili scale - mild salsa, hold the jalapenos.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $500.00
Purchased At:Pierik's Cycle
Strengths:takes a beating fairly well, great components for the money shelled out
Weaknesses:Front rim (pulses when braking), can't get front der. to shift that smoothly, seat feels like wood. pedal cages
Bike Setup:body geometry seat, shimano clipless pedals were added
Bottom Line:A great bike for the money you pay. While it's not the lightest bike, it's great for someone who rides recreationally. The seat has to be replaced, as the stock one hurts on even short rides, and the front der. should be upgraded (even my bike shop can't adjust it properly). The front rim issue is pretty minor. I've ridden the bike pretty hard, and haven't managed to wreck it. A good entry level bike for someone interested in trying offroad but not sure if they want to put down a lot of money on a bike.

Bottom Line:At the time I bought it, it was the best I could afford, yet I've enjoyed the frame so much, that rather than purchase a new bike, I performed the upgrades shown above. This bike has done it all, from Singletrack to Centurys, and it just keeps coming back for more. The frame combines strength, comfort, and value. For the price, the original component mix was a good deal. I would not hesitate a moment in recommending a Specialized Product. What else can I say?

Strengths:Bang for the buck. $600 gets you a decent bike.
Weaknesses:Caged pedals. Right hand rear brake cable comes out when you turn the handle bars hard right. This sucks because if your not watching and it pops out, you're out of rear brakes! Also, Specialized seems to think a lot of their stock front sprockets, but I agree with everyone else...THEY SUCK! Bent the middle ring after 2 rides.
Bike Setup:Stock except for Specialized comp clipless pedals.

Weaknesses:brakes, fork (jett t2), stock tires aren't very good on rocks (isn't it supposed to be a ROCKhopper?)
Bike Setup:stock except for lx brakes and levers, body geometry comp saddle, specialized team tires
Bottom Line:good overall, great if you get new brakes, tires, and fork. the jett t2 is a very bad fork overall, not much travel, and too stiff. the bike frame is very soft, it is a high quality frame for the price. this bike climbs really well, and is pretty forgiving for a hardtail. just buy a new fork and it would be worth a lot more

Bottom Line:Bought 97 rigid, Great Frame, crappy brakes and saddle, gripshifters don't last, what kind of idiot specs a 22" handlebar on a 20.5" bike???. Put a RST281 fork on it, stiffer than the indy or jett, but heavier and useless except for the big bumps. I've replaced just about everything on this bike, but the frame is still going. 20,000KM later( I used to commute on it)Buy the rigid and put a real fork on it, at least a Judy T2. Bottom Line:In the past I've only bought cheap $200 bikes. Biking was kind of a chore. After getting this bike, I now know that it pays to spend more. Since I got it in the spring of 1999, I use it whenever I have free time. I can't wait to get on it. My whole attitute about biking has changed. This bike is wonderful. I had to replace the brakes already; but I have 600 miles on it. My only complaint would be the seat. My privates hurt after an hour ride. That was alleviated when I replaced it w/ a Specialized Body Geometry seat. Can't wait 'til spring (live in snowy Minnesota.)

Strengths:
The geometry suits me (6 feet, 230 lbs) - felt the most comfortable out of the 4 or 5 bikes I test-rode.Fast and smooth on the trail or on the road...
Weaknesses:
Dia-Compe brakes - the no-name brakes on my everyday hybrid bike are better.Saddle - upgraded to a Body Geometry - great saddle!
Similar Products Used:
Trek, Kona, Specialized Hardrock, Giant - more or less in the same price range
Bike Setup:
Upgraded the Rock Shox Jett C to Marzocchi Z3 suspension.Put some bar ends on.I'll upgrade the brakes next spring. It came with Shimano SPD-type clipless pedals - so I had to get some real cycling shoes - Wow, I'll never go back to toe clips!
Bottom Line:I bought my new Rockhopper FS mainly for exercise and to get back into trail-riding.
It replaced my 15-year old Peugeot mountain bike that saw a lot of commuting on snow and ice (and salted roads). Once I rode the new bike I decided I couldn't put it through the same punishment - it's too nice a bike to do that to! I'll thrash it properly on the trails instead...(I bought a cheap hybrid to ride to work). My rating is biased since I've been riding that old junker for so long!!!

I we'll changed almost everything but the frame. Rock Shox SID XC, XT Drivetrain, Stumpjumper Wheelset, Team Master Comp Tires, Specialized Prolong Revolution Saddle, Specialized Bar Ends.
Bottom Line:Don't get me wrong I love this bike to death, but that is due to the frame mostly. I wanted a Cro-moly frame and this was the only upper end one. I pretty much have completely upgraded the bike as you can see in the set up, which may be a bit overkill but somethings had to be replaced: Seat post (my only real real complaint, on a ride it completely stripped, but it is a pain in the butt to find a 30.4mm seat post), Pedals (pieces of crap), Front derailleur (Specialized went cheap on us there), Saddle (c'mon it sucked), Shocks (good enough but I wanted something bigger and better, I'm a big boy). The wheels and tires weren't necessary but I got a good deal on em and they look spanking. I recommend the frame and maybe just the frame, but for the price it is the best deal on the market for the whole bike

well where do i begin ( those reading this thinking i miss treat my bike i just ride hard ok )
I replaced the bar for and azonic world force and the improvement in widthn and rise has dramaticlay enhanced my controll and comfort
the crank set had to be replaced because one of then becasme twisted, for thos of you who jump you know you always have one foot in front, and the one at the back is taking and backwards downwards force that it hasn't been designed for . Also the chainrings became so messed up do trials, and i cant find a 42 bash guard. The rims , well basically anything beyonund road work will bend them. I've replaced the rear with a mavic D521 laced to an lx hub and on an specialized eveil twin dh tyre, 2.2 wide, with the overlapping bead, ok in theory it doesn't work but i kept geting ripped sidewalls with the old specialzed tyres.

Bottom Line:well i suppose i dont rate this bike that highly because i've changed my riding stlye considerably in the last 6 months . the frame is good but in intend to change it for either a zaskar of Ds1 soon, but if you ride cross country this bike is fine . The problem is i had too high expectations for it and assumed it could do everything which it could'nt. Iam diappointed , but with myself, for getting the wrong bike but at the time it was perfect . it has however given me a good platform to develop my riding onand when i get my new frame i'll have most of the parts .The rockhopper may be the classic mountain bike but it is certainly not a do it all bike and this has annoyeed me

Bike Setup:

Bottom Line:Bought after a lot of looking, due to OK reviews and impressive specs (relatively speaking), and the recommendation of the dealer over several similar priced bikes (choice was between this and a Fisher Tequesta). Ive ridden mine on some rough stuff and also use it to ride the 8 miles and a bit to work along a canal towpath. I disagree with the reviews which slag the Jett T2's: They've been fine for me on everything I've thrown them over or off of. But the preload adjusters need to be easier to grip and need better click-stops to make equal adjustment easier. The pedals are toss, and a bike this good really should have spuds as standard. One of mine has already had to have a new bearing set! Also, the saddle seems a little uncomfy, but that might be my soft arse that's not yet adjusted to being on a bike. The brakes don't spring away from the rims as easily as they should and often rub, but they stop the bike Ok, though I guess from the comments there are probably beter brakes available. My chain bust after only 2 months, and I dunno why. BUT...the machine has been generally great, and the niggles are only small ones, apart from the pedals, which are my arse squared. Please take note of this, Specialized please note! Great bike for the brass, but put SPD's on it, please! And whilst you're at it, send me some as thanks for my objective review. As i've nowt to compare it with, I'll give it 4 and a half chilis (lose a half for the pedals).

- the light frame

Weaknesses:
- the saddle (ouch)
- the breaks
Bike Setup:
stock except I had the pedals changed.
Bottom Line:I have to agree with several of the other messages ~ I think this is a good bike for a smaller person, I went with the 15 inch frame - I have plenty of stand over room. My last bike was too big and heavy so this is a nice change. Some people have mentioned the shock isn't what they'd like, but it seems fine to me. I'm wondering if this bike is better suited to lighter/smaller/or female folks? This is a nice light bike which handles well. My hill climbing has tremendously improved. I do feel a little out of control on the downhills because I'm bouncing all over the place - my last bike was pretty heavy, so it's just a change in the feel for me.The seat really sucks. It's definitely hard on the rear.
My breaks aren't as good as my old Giant's...plus they squeal sometimes. They do stop me though, so it's not like I'm in danger ~ but they could be better.I'm very pleased with my choice. I also really like the brushed steel color.

Bike Setup:
Brakes swapped for 99 LX v-brakes (a must have)
Specialized body geometry comp saddle
Shimano SPD-ish pedals
99 LX front mech
Bottom Line:This bike is what I'd term entry-level for real riding.First off- the frame.. It's a Ritchey Nitranium cromo frame, so it's not as light as an alu, but it is quite forgiving. The geometry is awkward,
offering very little standover, compared to say, a typical Scott hardtail. The cheap and nasty Wellgo pedals are awful. They are some of the worst I have ever used. They snagged on ALL shoes I tried. They were ripped off and replaced with some decent SPDs sharpsih. The supplied dia-compe brakes were really bad. They squeaked, and barely slowed the bike at all, and fought every inch of the way. A nice pair of
99 LX v brakes soon sorted that. 100% better, and lighter to boot. The front mech wasn't LX, but a lower end shimano, and was rather sluggish and not all that precise. Again, I upgraded that, to bring it into like
with the excellent 99LX shifters and rear mech (and my shiny new v-brakes!).
The saddle was rather cheesey. I replaced it with a Body Geo comp (the type with the kevlar corners and manganese rails), thus trimming some more
weight and making the bike a lot more comfy. My only remaining beef is with the cheap and nasty Rockshox Jett T2 shocks. After giving them a hammering, I notices that they had quite a lot
of flex. What's more, they kick the shock right back at you. An upgrade to some nicely damped Manitous will be my next big purchase.
I liked the shortish straight alu bars and the long stem. They gave me very sold control and comfort, and kept the bike going the way I wanted it to. I stuck a pair of Profile carbon fibre bar ends on, to help with climbing, and the bike climbs as well as something in that weight class
can be expected too. The tyres are reasonable, and cope nicely with the sort of cruddy, muddy terrain they get faced with.I did find that it helped a lot to get a lizardskin on the chainstay, mind you. Being relatively heavy and rigid, chainslap is fact of life. However, on such a simple frame, the 'skin gave it a bit of a BMX look, and works
like a dream :)
All in all, it's a very interesting attempt. It's a good entry level bike for someone on a budget, as you can replace the worst parts as finances
allow. In order, the bits I'd change are: pedals, brakes, seat, front mech, shocks. However, with a little tweaking, and if you get to know it well, it's a solid bike, with very predictable performance. Something of a classic
retro hardtail, at an ideal price for a weekend warrior on a budget :) I'll give it three burning devil mice, plus an extra one for the low low price.. Once it's upgraded, it's a very entertaining old fashioned thrashable bike, and pretty solid to boot. Hammertime fun :)

3 months
Strengths:
Almost everything on the bike, except the shocks.
Weaknesses:
As I've already said, the shocks aren't great and the brakes are a little dodgy.
Similar Products Used:
Gary Fisher Marin

Some Mongoose and GT bikes.
Bike Setup:
Upgraded shocks to Manitou SXR and changed pedals (they were sort of crap)
Bottom Line:It's a great bike, I haven't had any problems with it at all. Like I say change the shocks (anything but the Jett's) and you've got a fantastic bike.

Duration Product Used:

Strengths:
The bike is great for cross country and the steel frame gives you a good feel of the terrain. The bike has a high spec and is light and nimble. The ride position is perfect and easy to do jumps, downhill and urban stunts
Weaknesses:
I needed to change the pedals strait away for a pair of shimano 636 SPD The original Dia-Comp brakes are a bit weak . Also when replacing the rear wheel in the drop outs the paintwork is badly scratched.

Bike Setup:
I didn't buy the bike with the suspention forks as I felt it was not a good investment. It is heavy and unmanourable and poorly adjusted( I test rode it )I have not enetered this review in the rigid hardtails rockhopper section as there isn't one . I prefered to save £100 and invest it in a better fork such as an RST Mozo. One this subject will the 3in + of travel alter my frame geometrey so much that the bike will lift up on climes? Will I have to lose an inch in sag to prevent this.As I'm a freerider this fork seems ideal but is there too much travel. The price of it is too good to pass off
Bottom Line:It's a great bike for someone who wants a bike to start taking MTBing seriously. It can be upgraded to your own spec so I earge any reader about to buy a rockhopper FS to get the rigid, save £100 and wait a bit to get a decent fork. It is a much better investment and you'll have to replace the jett within a year or so Again this is a great bike but if you are slowly turning towards downhill bear in mind that the frame is designed for crosscountry and that the frame geometreies are too aggresive for downhill racing. If you buy it and still want to do downhill get some risers and flatties but be warned.Igive the Rockhopper FS 4 and the Rockhopper rigid 5 as you have saved £100 to spend on a decent fork

Bottom Line:Didn't see any UK reviews for this, so I thought I'd post one.
I bought this a couple of months ago, based on price, magazine reviews and a couple of test rides, and I've got to say that I'm really impressed with it.
It handles really well off road (and on! - I ride to work on mine and I've cut a couple of minutes off the trip time, compared to my old rigid bike, which didn't handle the kerb jumping etc as well)
As someone who has always been a bit dubious about suspension I've had to change my mind after riding this - the bike is still light, easy to maintain and LOTS more fun.
I don't think there is a better bike at this price in this category at the moment, so I'm giving it the full 5 stars.....

Older model Rockhopper
Bike Setup:
upgraded to Manitou Sx R
Upgraded to Specialized riser bars 24 wide
Upgraded to Fear Control team tires
Bottom Line:We are talking steel frame/hardtails here. Once you buy above this model your into Aluminum. For the money, this is the best buy, especially if you can upgrade a few things like the shock and tires. I did and the bike runs exceptionally well. The tires improved the traction and ride (cant beat the iron-curtain 127 team fear Control). The upgraded shock was worth the $150! Manitou SXR is a great system and color! I have the 21 blue frame, it comes in at about 27lbs, the tires add some weight, but it doesn't really matter for the everyday, downhiller, cross-country rider like me. This bike gets 5 chilis easy! Specialized has excellent geometry which equals riding comfort, weight is great, get some upgrades and youve got a real winner with this match-up! When you compare price and performance, no other hardtail can come close! Sweet!

I bought this bike because my old bike was TOO old and crummy. I'd had for about 3 to 4 years and I never rode it until this last year when I began to mountain bike. My new bike shifts about three times as fast and is a lot lighter. I will never go back to a bike with out a suspension fork again.

This a pretty sweet bike and it is a better deal than it was last year. It now comes with LX components which is better than what last year's model had. In fact the only thing that I don't like is the Jett T2's. It should have some Manitou's or better Rock Shox's, these T2's suck. Overall a sweet bike.

rode my friends rh and i cant say i was very impressed with it its very heavy, i think around 30 pounds. it also has a fork that is a real piece it's springy as heck every time you hit a bump the whole bike flys upinto the air cause of the backlash of the stupid thing (this was offroad and it might be diffrent on the road but that kills the whole reason for buying it in the first place) and yes i did try to adjust it but was still absolutely terrible . the only good things about this bike is the aggressive specialized geometry and the reasonably good components.
But hey my friend likes it a lot!

the up-hills major thigh killers, gave it all the abuse my body and the trail

not so good, only had six gears left by the end of the ride. upgrade the

I bought the bike for its value and I must say that you do get a good bike for the price. I use the Bike to commute and ride trails and the Rockhopper performs well on both. The Fork is plush and the ride is comfortable. Yet, the bike is still a bit heavy when compared to an Aluminum frame hardtail.
