Favorite Trail:Still searching for it!
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $250.00
Purchased At:used
Strengths:frame, headset, wheels
Weaknesses:none found yet except it could have came w/ quick release seat post collar? the fork is not the best, but it works.
Similar Products Used:fisher marlin, walmart pos's
Bike Setup:stock except Richey OCR Comp rims,
Bottom Line:this bike is great! the frame is very light and holds my 260 lb frame with ease. componants are all top line and work well. I got a great deal on a tough great bike for a big beginner. I am lucky to have found this high quality of a bike at this great price. $40 for a tune up and she is trail ready!

Favorite Trail:Dinosaur Ridge
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $800.00
Purchased At:Performance Bike
Strengths:Decent geometry, durability. I am a clydesdale, and have never had issues with the bike - so I will say it is solid. Nice green-bug paint job. Good shifters. Great XT rear deraileur (even though I ended up putting on XTR).
Weaknesses:The stock shock is not the best available, this won't be an issue if you are not over 200# like me. The seat is garbage, and had to go.
Similar Products Used:Gary Fisher, Raliegh, Schwinn Homegrown
Bike Setup:Currently: Race Face Crankset & Chainrings, Marzocchi Super Fly fork, Avid Arch Rival brakes, Ritchey stems, stock wheelset (pretty decent), XTR deraileur package, selle italia flite gel seat.
Bottom Line:At the end of endless upgrades, I must admit I am returning the bike to stock, except that awful seat, and selling it.

My reasons for selling it are based more upon the size of the bike than anything else - I bought the 21, should have a 19. Other than that, it has been a fine bike.

For 2 years it has served me well - and the wheelset, of which I was very skeptical (Specialized hubs, Ritchey OCR wheels), has performed flawlessly and true.

I would say it easily rates 4 out of 5, and only wish I could give it 4.5. I believe 5 is only for the creme de la creme, so 4 overall and 5 for value.

Purchased At:Cycling world Aberdeen
Strengths:Strong Frame, Strong Rims, Good tires they lasted for 2 years of heavy road and off road riding. handles 4' drops and jumps well for a croos country bike!
Weaknesses:Horrible Manitou Spyder's. head set and BB went in just under a year
Similar Products Used:cannondale F700sl.
Bike Setup:Richey Rims, Xt rear, STX front, Titec hellbent bars, DMR V8 Pedals, Manitou Spyders,Dia Compe DP7 Brakes, XT BB, Mr Crud Race Guard.
Bottom Line:Exelent all round strong bike with reliable components and eye caching paint job let down by crappy pedals (DMR V8's are new)and crappy forks. I get Dissed for doing jumps and trials on a XC bike but it stands up to it remarkably well. Great for riders who do a bit of every thing.

Weaknesses:seat, forks, rims, brakes, and grips

Bike Setup:A1 comp, XT's all around, mavic 517's, Easton carbon straight bar, race face grips
Bottom Line:I bought this bike after my avalanche was stolen, which was my first bike and I only owned it for 3 months.
The rockhopper is an awsome ride for me as a beginner going into intermediate, I ride close to 50 miles a week and have had some gnarly crashes and the bike has only a few noticeable scratches.
I plan rideing it for a couple more years, and upgradeing everything that hasn't been yet. Forks first with some new Z.2 atoms, hopefully within the next month.

Price Paid: $800.00
Strengths:Frame, Tires, Light Weight
Weaknesses:specialized clipless pedals, saddle
Bike Setup:shimano 545's, cane creek thudbuster suspension seatpost
Bottom Line:Awesome awesome bike. I was torn between K2, Trek, and this bike. I definitely made the right choice. I have beat the hell out of this bike and haven't had the first problem. The frame doesn't even have a scratch. Plus the Kevlar beaded tires are unbelieveble. All my friends have had flats on trail from the florida coral rocks and I have never gone flat once. Clipping in and out with the stock specialized clipless pedals sucked but I upgraded to shimano 545's and they are awesome. Plus I had to compensate for the hard saddle by going with the suspension seatpost. Overall, I can't imagine a better hardtail that will take a beating and keep rocking like this one.

Purchased At:Shop
Strengths:A good frame to build on. Specialized made this a good foundation to turn into a real riding machine.
Weaknesses:Bottom bracket, brakes, front suspension.
Bike Setup:Threw on a new fork, bottom bracket and brakes. Added a XT crank out of necessity.
Bottom Line:After landing on a boulder using only my crank, I kinda screwed that up. I added a shimano BB and an XT crank which was a much better setup. I also added a SID XC fork which is a much better ride. The brakes were just something that couldnt be overlooked so i replaced those with XTR and a salsa arch. now the bike takes all the $h!t i give it.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:Pearl White paint with clear-coat still as eye grabbin' as a year ago when I bought it, butted Aluminum frame, weight (approx. 26.0lbs)and component mix impossible to match at this price level($1250CDN), hill-climbing made easy!!, appreciate Spyder-R fork at speeds above 15K,
Weaknesses:Bent rear rim doing "rock walks" (BMX freestyle is hard to give up even at 30!!), brakes don't stay centered, front derailleur (LX) unimpressive, saddle by Specialized is uncomfortable after about 20K of XC, fork abit stiff at slower pace (ie.technical stuff) even at max preload (170lb rider)
Similar Products Used:Circa 1993 Fila 21 speed mtb. bike (read 40lb Costco special), no comparison!! Man have brakes come a long way in stopping power!! Rear wheel hops on a mtn. bike was unheard of 7 years ago unless you poured "Coke" on your rims.
Bike Setup:RockShox ssp (an absolute Godsend), computer, Kona riser and stem, some Titanium/Kevlar saddle replacement offered by bike shop for ass muncher OEM seat, Shimano spd/platform pedals
Bottom Line:You could spend more but unless you're some poser that is into spendin' more glue ($$$$) on his pedal-bike than on his car (in Canada that's just dumb), or are a SERIOUS racer, then this beautiful Aluminum sweetheart will provide you with all the fun, speed and action that you can handle. Excellent all rounder for XC, commuting, freeride and even modest downhill.

Overall 4 chilis only because I can never stop grinning when I ride my brothers 1999 Specialized FSR (it went on sale AFTER I got my bike!!).

Strengths:rock solid frame, handling, great looks (the mean green bean)
Weaknesses:nutcracker saddle, sappy brakes, crunchie bottom bracket, razor-like pedals
Bike Setup:stock setup - ditched tires, threw on some continental road wheels.
Bottom Line:i ride from to work and back. i put in roughly 70 - 100 miles per week - season dependant. ive had the bike for 10 months now. i'm pretty much hands off on maintenance. and for not touching this bike it rode well. granted they were street miles.

the saddle sucks. hard as a rock, and takes quite some time to adjust to - if you're lucky, you'll still be able to procreate after owning this bike.

brakes ... that's what they're calling these things now? they're just not worth it. replace immediately.

the bottom bracket, everytime i hit a rain storm or rivers of sewer water, it starts crunching like it's trying to dijest rock candy. replace immediately.

i got hit by a ford expedition last fall. damned beast of a truck threw me into michigan avenue. nasty spill, but my frame came back unscathed. watch the pedals, they gouged my leg damn deep. stitches and a trip to the emergency room fixed me up good.

i haven't upgraded any components beyond the tires - believe me though ... the brakes, saddle, BB, and pedals are the first on my list.

great bike - so so deal. 900 bucks.

Theres been no change in the stiffness of the frame or condition of the welds after 5 years of hard use. It still climbs like a dream, and is the best for wet, rocky, rooty singletrack I ride on. Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:A1 FRAME: build quality and geometry - just the best
Avid 1.0L brake levers,
LX shifters (do the job nicely)
distinctive paint job - mean green
Price is great for NZ
Weaknesses:nutcrusher aka seat(broken), brakes (bin), front derailleur (exploded), pedals (next thing going in the bin. )
stem may be too long for some also h'bar too narrow.
Similar Products Used:Trek OCLV, GT.
Bike Setup:Bog standard setup apart from upgrades to XT/XTR brakes(magic), riser h'bar and bar-ends. Saddle (Velo Plush -all I could afford after buying new brakes. New saddle untested over long distance but feeling good so far).
Bottom Line:I hope someone from Specialized reads these things cos I'd like to add my name to the pile of folk who've had their share of problems with this bike but would rather spend wads of cash on upgrades rather than selling up and starting afresh with something else. Weighing up the cost of components against a new bike - that really says something about how sweet the frame is.

I'd also like the Specialized boys n girls and mtbr's who're planning on visiting NZ to he clear on how expensive bike's and components are Downunder (approx USD1300 for Spec'd Rockhopper Comp) so you can appreciate that I've got every right to really stick the knife in ...but I'm not cos I like this bike.

So you want my version of how I came to be a gibbering fool....Won a bike in a competition. Prize bike too small so shelled out more $$ and upgraded to this. Got the bike home, jumped on and set off, didn't get out of the driveway - 3 revs into it, front derailleur explodes leaving little bits of metal all over the place like Cape Canaveral. Took it back - no LX parts available so free upgrade to XT. Lose some, you win some.

Next to go were the Dire Compe brakes. Dear me...better off using your knackers - refused to stay centred, rubbed on rims and required adjustment every ten mins, plus bonus surprise - no stopping power when you did have to use them. Brake upgrades really worth it, XT's made such a difference, nearly went over the handlebars first time up.

Moving on..lent the green machine to a mate who took it on a 150km 18hr cross-country proving run (nutter)- his feedback was essentially great bike, pedals probably made in the same factory as the brakes, stem needs shortening and the saddle's a razor.
I was kind of relieved when the seat rails completely buckled, which is really my fault at 220lbs, shouldn't eat so much.

The only other really annoying component were the Spec'd deathtrap pedals. Have never learned to appreciate that keeling over feeling at traffic lights. Even at their loosest were difficult to get in and out of. Not even particularly compatible with expensive Spec'd shoes

But the frame.....the triple butted frame..even sitting here at work I can see it....this bike's got me by the short hairs and no matter what goes wrong - I still LOVE it, ride it hard and dream about it with some Bombers on it .

The bottom line: This bike is perfect for all beginners/intermediates who're looking to have some fun with upgrades and increase their knowledge of how their bike works. It's really worth doing and once spec'd up you'll have an agile, beautifully balanced machine excelling at stiff climbs and single-tracks.

If you don't have the time/money/opportunity/inclination to go through the upgrade process (I know four owners of Comp's and not one's in Original condition)buy this bike, change some bits before it leaves the shop to avoid frustration and the next bike you buy will be a tricycle for your grandkids.

Loses a chilli for the dodgy brakes...sorry Kermit.

Favorite Trail:anyplace I can ride it
Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:Climbs like a Saturn V
Weaknesses:Stock there are plenty - the brakes, front shocks, crankset, chainrings, seat, and specialized "suicidal" pedals.
Similar Products Used:Have a Schwin Cimmaron and Miyata Ridgerunner. Test drove numerous other bikes. Best one yet is the Merlin.
Bike Setup:Too often, almost daily.
Bottom Line:I guess I should update my review - see below. I replaced the front shock with a Marzocchi Superfly, replaced the brakes with Avid Arch Rival 50s, the rear derailleur with an XTR, the rear cassette with an XT, the cranks and chainrings with RaceFace, the pedals with Shimano 545s, and the chain with a Sachs. The seat is now a Titanium Flite Gel, in matching lime green.

I guess I'll do the wheels next... Oh, yeah, almost forgot the new ritchey bars.

Regrets? Tons. I wish I had just bought a 2500.00 titanium bike from Excel Sports down the street. Live and learn.

On the flip side, it is the big and bad green rockhopper A1 Comp FS of all time. People think I am a better or more dedicated rider than I really am - but hey that's kind of a negative, isn't it?

Worst part is the lock weighs almost as much as the bike. Everyone tells me it will get stolen. My next bike will be a titanium with all XTR, custom built, and all logos sanded off. Maybe I'll even airbrush a K-Mart logo on the thing...

Date Reviewed: February 14, 2000
Favorite Trail:Avalon, Schaeffer farms
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:Strengths: FRAME FRAME FRAME
The frame paint job is very nice (i have the green), and very lightweight, climbs well. Plus a lifetime warrantee! Not a bad deal.
The wheels have gone 1500 miles, including some east coast rock descents (gambrill's state park) and though they're nearing replacement time, they held together very well.
Weaknesses:Brakes suck - read all the other reviews of this bike for more detail - they just suck in every way. A rigid fork would have been better than that foam thing they put on (no joke - take this fork apart and look at the "elastomer" packing foam they use instead of springs in the fork). The crankset sheared off after about 4 months, replaced it and the malleable chainrings with an XT set, no problems since. Front quick release sheared off in my hand during a field repair after about 3 months - replace these as soon as you get the bike. Front derailler has some adjustment problems (it's LX and it shows). After one year the headset has started to rust and is failing, I'm going to replace it soon.
Bike Setup:Stock: 19" frame, grabber green.
Modifications:
Fork: Marzochi Z2 alloy (replaced for fun)
Crankset: Schimano XT (replaced due to failure)
Handlebars: Riser bars and flipped stem
Brakes: Schimano XT V-brakes (first and essential mod)
Seat: Specialzed body geometry seat
Pedals: Time ATAC aluminum (specialized's clipless are very hard to re-enter due to their geometry, but good pedals. if they were longer and flatter they'd be sooo much better).
Tires: Tioga factory XC. The stock tires had a habit of failing in steeply banked turns, not enough knobs facing "out"). Stock tires lasted 9 months till failure though!
Tire quick releases: replaced due to failure, replace immediately upon purchase!!!
Bottom Line:Very happy with the bike, because the frame is garaunteed for life and it's a great frame. A good bike to build around, but expect to have to replace some components to get the performance you want. Compared to other $700 bikes with nicer equipment, think about this: you can replace all the components you want, but if the frame sucks, you have to get a new bike. This way, -you- get to choose what equipment to put on it, too.

If you don't like to work on your bike, or want a finished product, do NOT buy this bike.

did i mention it's GREEN! (:

Bottom Line:I bought this bike after much agonizing for an amazing $619.00. It is a 99, bought at Performance Bike in Boulder. Bang for buck, I think it is unbeatable. That being said...The crank is not as positive as the Shimano XT on the Schwinn. I could swear it flexes, although I don't see how it could. This crank needs to go, and I am tossed between an XT and White Industries USA. Suggestions, or success stories?I weigh 215 pounds, and the shock is way too soft. I need stiffer springs. The braking does not feel right, it needs better modulation and strength. I will upgrade to the Avid Arch Rival 50s, f&r. The chainrings are lousy, way worst than even the old suntour xc. I cannot believe they are so cheap, combined with the LX front derailleur, it's pretty sloppy front shifting. Even the old Schwinn Cimmaron with all old-style Deore XT shifts and cranks way better. A close examination of the chainrings (sugino?) show there is no special shaping on the teeth, they look like they are merely stamped from sheet metal. Yikes, these gotta go ASAP.On a positive note, I think the frame, wheels, rear hub setup, tires, & levers are great. The ride is really nice, and it can climb, climb, climb. Maybe I've understated the frame, it is very well made and has a good feel to it.The bike gets lots of looks and comments, maybe it's just the cool green color. I am really enjoying it, and for the money I think it's a no-brainer - easily rates a five.

Strengths:
The price, XT components, great Manitou susupension, strong durable frame. The frame is an artwork, both in color and detail. It's a light durable bike that climbs like a mountain goat! You'll be amazed on climbs, trust me! The seat is just a nitch above average.
Weaknesses:
Definitely the brakes, it doesn't have the
'secure' feeling a better brake offers. Chainring isn't durable enough, just one bang on the log is all you need to replace it! Spokes might be weak, as I broke one in a mild race!

Bottom Line:I have always had a high opinion of Specialized, but this bike has dampened my spirits on them. The first week after I bought this thing I had already broken one of my brake levers and had 2 flats (because a piece of cable wire was embedded on the inside of the tire, it must of happened during assembly.) Then last week while I was hitting some trails, I bent the crankarm. It is a good thing this is under warrenty or I would be way peeved. The mechanic at the bike store said that the crankset on this bike was forged wrong and was way out of alignment. They sent me a new one, which is cool. I have decided to upgrade to the Raceface LP, lime green, powdercoated crankset though. I have gotten rid of my pedals as well. I know have lime green wellgo pedals that are SPD, so now I can ride other peoples bikes with my cleats as well. I threw on a black thomson seatpost as well. The seat is a bit uncomfortable for my body, so I am buy ing a Selle Italia Lime Green seat as well. The brakes are awful too. Forget about trying to stop in the rain, those AVID brakes have no grip. The brakes do not maintain their tension for very long, I am constantly adjusting them. The could have at least thrown on an XT front derailleur. I thought this bike would be cool, but I was bitterly disappointed that I have to throw so much extra cash into it.

In looking through their catalog, I found out that they only put a five year warranty on the aluminum frames. Maybe that isn't an important issue with most people but there are plenty of bikes out there at this price point that will guarantee their aluminum frames for life. Just something to think about before buying.

Bottom Line:I thought this would be a decent bike for being close to a grand but I've had quite a few problems that should not have occured. The Dia-compe brakes suck and will not remain centered so they keep rubbing the rims. Replaced them with XT v-brakes and don't have any problems now. The rims got wacked out of true after the first ride. Bad initial wheel building. The Manitou Spyder shock blew out after 3 months and also made knocking noises. Finally the bottom bracket is of low quality and feels like it has sand in it after 3 months of riding. Very dissapointed. Especially with the shocks.

The headset is getting tight and the BB makes noise. The frame more than makes up for all these short comings. Bottom Line:I've put quite a few miles on now and overall I'm really pleased with this bike. No other bikes I looked at in this price range could offer the same mix of quality parts and frame. The frame rocks, the chain rings don't. I upgraded the LX front mech to XT since it's using Mega 9 and I want as smooth shifts as possible. The brakes are right for the price range and do adequate job stopping in mud and rain but I'll probably mark them for upgrade at a future date. I expect the Specialized BB to give it up prematurely but until it does it's no different than a high end BB, I mean it spins..what else do ya want ? Tossed the Specialized pedals before it even left the shop, hadn't heard good things, beside I already had 747's and love 'em. Came with Ritchey rims, OCR in the rear, not bad for an intermediate bike. Tires are nice and light, but aren't the best in soft stuff. I like the Spyder-r. It's basically a SX with permanent settings for a rider in the 145-165 lb range, which I happen to fall under so hooray for me. Swap in some Xvert-r springs and play with the oil weight and you've got a super light, plush fork. Oh, yeah, I replaced the stock grips with some good 'ol Yeti Speed Grips, they're squishy comfy ! I'm givin this ride five spicy poo's cause of the smokin frame and general quality and value for the buck. Yeah it has some crappy components, but nothin that I didn't know would be have to be upgraded after I broke 'em anyway. Now, go ride.

Bottom Line:Before I was even able to ride this bike, I had problems. The day I was going to pick it up, the bike shop told me that the chain was dropping because of a defected spoke in the crankset. So I waited for that to come in from Specialized thinking that was going to be the worst thing that could happen. However, when I finally got the bike, the shoe pad fell off when I tried to put the front wheel on. Then, the front wheel would not turn properly because the brake arms were not working properly. Once again, the bike needed another part replaced. Then, just when I though everything was o.k., I discovered a hairline fracture in the frame. The hairline fracture could have easily been discovered by someone at Specialized had they looked closely enough at the shoddy paint job near the fracture before they shipped it out. I'm very disappointed that Specialized shipped out a bike frame with this defect. This was supposed to be my first really nice bike and I can tell you that I will probably never look at a Specialized bike again.

This id the first serious bike purchase I've made and I am very satisfied. The only problem I've encountered is with the front derailleur, similar to the other posts. I have the Grabber Green and it definitely grabs your attention.

I recently bought the 98 model and it is the best! The shifting and the shocks are great. Ihave had no problems and it is a superb climber. This is definitely a great bike.

I've had my RH for about 3 months and my only criticism is with the way Specialized built the wheels at the factory... They didn't bother to put any grease in the hubs!!! Apart from the I cannot find any fault with the bike. I've upgraded the pedals to Shimano DH, added bar ends and a brake booster on the rear brake to eliminate flex. I'd recommend it to anyone...and I've had really good comments while riding it from passers by!!

I just took my new '99 RH A1 COMP FS out yesterday. I had to tinker a little
with the front derailleur. Once I had it adjusted everything works so smoothly!
What really supprised me was the climbing power I had. I just motored right
up any hill. I opted for the Pearl White finish. What a sharp looking bike!
My only real problem is, I'm 220 pounds and the Monitou Spyder R is a little
soft. Stiffer springs will be my next upgrade. All in all I'm very happy with
it!

The RH is the the 2nd bike I ride, after a Stumpjumper with a M2 frame. I'm having a little bit of trouble with the front derailleur which seems not that precise. Apart from that it sounds great. - one star for the front derailleur
