Bottom Line:
I have had this bike since it was new and nearly all of the roughly 100 miles have been off road. I still have the original HARDROCK'R tires but I am thinking of upgrading to the Armadillo XC since I use the bike for commuting and the HR tires howl like bogger truck tires and they pick up everything (sticks, mud, you name it). I love the adjustable front fork and that the fact that it was so light compared to the two crap bikes that I had bought from Walmart they both broke within 24 hours.
I love this bike and will not get rid of it until the frame fails.

Bottom Line:
The bike's ergonomics felt really strange at first, and I had a small bit of buyer's remorse my first couple of times out on my favorite trails. It felt as though I couldn't turn as tight, and though I still think it's true to a degree, I've learned how to lean and ride the technical single track alot better.
I've had no problems with the FD, but I don't use it much on the trails I ride. I've taken small drops and it seems to be fine, though I bet FS would be more stable. The adjustable shock works fine. The bike can take alot of abuse; it's been dropped off bridges, ladders, and teeter totters, ran into a ran with it, slid down some slick downhills, and rode hard over technical terrain. I would easily recommend this bike to anyone.
I'm searching for an upgrade after only 6 months, primarily because the bike is a bit shaky on drops. I feel I can do better if I had a FS. I'd buy this bike again though.

After one year of riding, this bike has allowed me to progress from rail trail riding to real, live single track and technical bushwacking rides that I feel have given the bike a thorough test.
The only complaint I have is the clunking sound coming from the crank/pedal/bb area. Maybe it's just a loose crank, or maybe it's something a little more involved, I don't know. It hasn't bothered me enough to check it, yet. I've ridden the bike pretty hard and it has held up well.
Hose it off, oil the chain, and it's ready for the next ride.

The BB is weak when under pressure, not a big deal since it is a cheap upgrade. I will do it when this one is toast, not before. Stem puts the bar very high. Suspension could be better. Finally got the bike out in the woods, rode a gas pipeline and a forestry road that hasn't seen a grader in a LONG time.
The frame got pounded pretty good, riding in bulldozer tracks on the pipeline that were really washboarded, and the forestry road was full of holes and ruts.
The frame is still rock solid, hasn't had one creak or groan.
I definitely need a suspension seatpost. The bike didn't rattle after the woods ride, but my teeth sure were.
The more I ride this bike, the more I like it.

Bottom Line:
This a one-week update on my first report. The only complaints I have to this point are the rough rims and the adjuster that increases or decreases the amount of tension on the front fork that broke on day three of ownership.
I was trying to increase the amount of tension on the front fork when the knob just starting spinning freely. Nothing more than finger pressure, and not much of that, due to arthritis, but the knob failed just the same.
The front rim developed a hellish thump when the front brake was applied while under any sort of speed. The dealer decided the rim had a "bad seam", and tried to grind the high spot down with a Dremel tool. The thump is still there, but it's not quite as bad as before. It's still annoying. The back rim does the same thing, just not nearly as bad.
Once I got used to the shifting, it has become really smooth. I listed shifting in my first review as a weakness, but I've since concluded the weakness was in my shifting, not the bike's.
All in all, still a good bike. Nice and light, and it has not developed any creaks or rattles.

Just bought the bike today (9/22/01).
Have never ridden a mountain bike before, haven't been on any bike for 20 years. My hunting pard and I both bought Specialized Hardrock A1 FS bikes. Looked at GT Aggressors, Cannondale low end stuff, Diamondbacks, Giants, Haros in the same general price range.
I have no intention of going out and climbing trees or anything with this bike, but after two, hour-long rides today, mostly on pavement and railroad service roads of varying gradiants(the 'roads are no longer in use), I think I've made a good choice in a bike. After the aches and pains go away and I get more used to riding again, I'll update this review. We'll eventually be riding forestry roads, maybe some single track if we get brave. So far, I believe the Specialized Hardrock A1 FS is a good bike for the money. The bike is a lot lighter in weight than I remember bikes of 20+ years ago. The shifting controls took a little getting used to, but the gear numbers on the shifters really help a lot. Once in a while, the gears rattle getting from one front gear to another, usually second to third, but if I give the shifter an extra little nudge, it pops in. The components seem to be of a higher quality than competing bikes in this price range. Double-wall rims seem like a good idea. The front fork rebound tension is adjustable, which seems like a good option. Middle-aged couch jockeys looking to get active again would do well to give this bike a ride. It's not a comfort bike, but after riding both comforts and full-tilt mountain bikes, I decided this bike was the way to go.

Good price for decent parts; better parts than some competing bikes out there, as some $600+ have only Jett rather than Judy TT; clean look (blue/black) and simple design; brakes are very good, if properly adjusted
Weaknesses:
As mentioned by others, front der. was tough to work at first, but after playing around with the adjustments and lubricating the parts, it's working fine now; suspension can be spongy, making it tough to climb (perhaps a fork upgrade with lock-out would remedy); slightly hard saddle; a riser bar would be nice

The A1 is reasonably light, responsive, and tough for the price charged. I use it everyday to get to and from school (approx. 18 miles both ways) and once or twice off-road on the weekends. It has not failed me so far. It seems like a good beginner's mtb.

Front derailer could be a bit better
Similar Products Used:
GT Agressor 3.0/2.0, GF Marlin
Bike Setup:
All stock
Bottom Line:
A great bike. It isn't the best bike around, but might very likely be the best one in the ~$400 range. The front shock is nice, all the components are great except that the front derailer sometimes doesn't shift from the lowest gear to the middle without a little coaxing. Not a big problem, and probably nothing a little tuning wouldn't fix, but if it broke I'd probably replace it with a nicer one. All in all a fantastic bike.

Pretty much everything, the Rock Shox Judy TT fork is a huge bonus.
Weaknesses:
I'd say the front hub and the fron derailler, it gets kind of hard to switch to very high gears.
Similar Products Used:
Trek 4500, Norco Bigfoot, Brodie Alpha, Kona Blast.
Bike Setup:
Just got it yesterday. No updgrades yet
Bottom Line:
A sweet bike for beginners like myself. Handles really well and can take a lot of bumps. Out of all the bikes that I tried (above) this bike definetly felt and looked the best. If your a beginner or intermidiate rider that's low on money then get this bike, its great...It comes with forks that are better than some $800-$900 bikes
It rules!

Strengths:
Good price, great starter bike. Decent components for the price. Nice looking!
Weaknesses:
Cheesy platform pedals, bottom bracket (easy to get water into), seat HARD! and easily rips, touchy shifting into low gears.
Similar Products Used:
none
Bike Setup:
Stock except for upgrades: Specialized clipless pedals, Onza bar ends, Cat Eye lights.
Bottom Line:
This is my first MTB, so I can't really compare to much. Very satisfied with price, quality, customer service. Upgrades are a must, especially pedals and seat. I have had a few instances of trouble (rear brake cable pulled free, front wheel tweaked, water in bottom bracket 2 times) but am unsure if this is a problem with the bike, or if I am just a thrasher. Doesn't matter anyway due to great customer service (translation: free repairs). Overall a great bike for a newbie, but experienced riders probably will demand more.

I really like the Judy TT fork. In this price range, it is hard to beat. The rear derailer works great.
Weaknesses:
It does not shift from the small to middle ring very easily with the front derailer. I would prefer if the handle bars were not so high.
Similar Products Used:
Giant, Diamondback, Gary Fisher, Raleigh
Bike Setup:
Judy TT fork, Shimano Alivio and Acera derailers, Specialized components
Bottom Line:
I researched and tested various bikes in the sub $500 price range. This bike stood out because of the Judy TT fork. It is a great bike for the beginner or the intermediate with limited cash.

Bottom Line:
IT HAS BEEN A GOOD BIKE, HASENT BEEN REALLY ABUSED OTHER THAN A COUPLE OF 3FT DROPS ON TRAIL. I DONT HAVE A LOT OF EXPERIENCE WITH THESE BIKES BUT IF YOU LOOK AT OTHER BRANDS AND THEIR PRICE THIS IS THE BIKE. GOOD COMPONENTS GOOD SHOCK(BETTER THAN ON SOME BIKES THAT COST A LOT MORE), NICE SADDLE. THE ONLY QUESTION I HAVE IS THE FRONT RIM, IT IS OUT OF TRUE ALREADY, NOT BAD, BUT I HAVE ONLY DONE A COUPLE OF SMALL DROPS. IM NOT A BIG GUY EITHER. HMMMMMMMMM? THE TIRES DONT DO ALL THAT GREAT IN THE MUD, BUT THEY SEEM TO DO WELL IN THE LOOSE STUFF AND ON THE ROAD. ALL IN ALL A GREAT BIKE, YOU CANNOT GO WRONG WITH THIS BABY. THE BLUE IS ONE OF THE BETTER PAINT JOBS IVE SEEN SO FAR.

Strengths:
This is one amazing bike. I just recently bought this bike and gave it a thrashing down a crazy mountain trail. The bike is still unfazed. This is an amazing bike for the price. This is a great bike for begginers and capable riders as well. Of course, the specialized quality will last you quite a while as well. This is truly an amazing and solid bike with few weakneses.
Weaknesses:
The front gear shifter is a little sketchy and sometimes has trouble shifting into higher gears (it could also just be my particular bike). Not much else is wrong woth this amazing bike.

Basically everything on the market today.
Bike Setup:
Out of the box. No new upgrades. YET
Bottom Line:
This is a great bike and if u are a beginner and you want a good bike that can take a thrashing or if u are an experianced rider with out a lot of $$ than this bike is also a great fit for you. This bike is a great choice.

Similar Products Used:

Totally stock. Everything works great for now...
Bottom Line:
This bike is super solid. Doesn't rattle, squeak or do anything else sketchy. Takes a beating and still works like a champ. I'm a big guy: 6'5" and 260 lbs, and if this bike can handle me thrashing it on the trails 4 times a week, it can surely handle your abuse. I bought it over the other bikes in this price range because it has an awesome Al frame and the excellent Judy TT front fork. If you're looking for a cheap bike that will treat you right out on the trails, this is without a doubt the best you can do without spending a lot more. BOTTOM LINE: Cheap & fun. The best you can expect to get for under $500.

Bottom Line:
I am fairly new to Mountain biking but ever since I have gotten this bike I've been hitting the trails at least twice a week. I don't know what the other bikes that costs hundreds to thousands more feel like but this one is more than I need to do the trails of medium difficulty. I would reccommend it to any beginner or intermediate who doesn't have much money.
