Strengths:
I bent the front fork in a crash, and bent the stock wheels around the fork. The bottom bracket also started creaking on me, but thats not a hard fix.
Weaknesses:
my friends Big Hit and an Enduro
Similar Products Used:
Stock exctept, Sun Ryno lite rims, easton carbon riser, XT shifters, sram 9.0 derailer, 02 Mantiou Black (120 mm version), Time atac pedals, and im looking into a long travel kit, or enginnering one. Hayes hydro's are next.
Bike Setup:
I think the bike is great. I Didnt like the magnum that was orginaly on there so when i bent it i was happy. it gave me a good excuse to replace it. The frame has held up tp every that that ive ridden over. The problem with the bottem bracket begin low can be solved with ta new fork, i no longer have problems hitting it on things with the new fork. The bike is not light, but its also not heavy. Im not a XC racer i ride for fun so i dotn care. It just means some parts are beefier then neccessary. Which is problaby a good thing for me. Id recomend it to anyone that likes riding and wants to get a good inexpensive bike. It can be upgraded to match the bikes of today give a little time and effort.
Bottom Line:
I think its a great bike. I orginaly got it because i didnt have 1200 to kill on a bike. I go this so i could upgrade it over time. Its been working out. It handles most every thing i can dishout. The Magnum on it originaly neede to be replaced, it would botttom out on anything over a 2 foot drop. With the Black on there it has no problems with bottom bracket clearence and complements the bike well. The wheels i had to replace but they broke from some bad crashes. Overall a great bike if you want to start usign full suspension, and if you get attached to the frame like me you can upgraded it or if not buy a new bike.

Very good bike for taking a beating. I found that I could trash the bike and make it go through a lot of hard stuff, and it wouldnt break.

I found that the comps that came with it were not as well made as some of the other comps on bikes. I found this when my chain kept snapping because of the rear derailer.

Bottom Line:
this bike rides just as well if not beter then the gt i drive for more then $1500 less. you have to get the bike set up right by throwing the coil away and geting a heavyer one. and the mountu shok needs replaced if you doing much technical but is fine for riding the street. some of the coponints are a little lower quality then you expect from specilized, but for a entry level bike it is dealable.the bick handels great once it is dialed in. it can handel any thing i have thrown at it so far. a little heavey for climbing for a long time but can handel the 50 degree climb on lose sand if you just dont get ahead of your self. i can bomb kgb or phils with out any problems. both of witch are 1000 foot drops in about 10 mins of winding single track, with pleanty of skid row romble bumbs. this is a great bike if you are a beginer, and if you're willing to put money in to it it is a pretty go down hiller if you just want the edge off, or a good xc bike

Beefy Frame is nice becuase your not gonna beat it or yourself to death. Doesn't bob much during climbing, good tires/rims, comfortable on your bum and your wallet. Long wheelbase makes for good stability
Weaknesses:
Incredibly heavy. I didn't realize this till I jumped on a friend of mine's hardtail and rode it some. This is the reason I am going to switch back to a hardtail, and sell this bike. Front shock sucks. Bike is constantly making noise, even when in perfect tune. Sweet spot for making sharp switchbacks is way too far forward compared to other bikes. I keep hitting the bottom bracket and chainrings on every ride. Something that doesn't happen on my cyclocross bike on the same trails.

Strengths:
Sharp handling in single track and at high speed, easy to shift weight, climbs well, good suspension. The componant set is decent, and the stock tires are well suited to trail riding. Cool frame design.
Weaknesses:
Low bottom bracket leads to ring bashes and pedal hits, especially when combined with plush suspension settings. Front derailuer seems impossible to set to negate chain rub in more than half the gears. Large size weighs 32 lbs, not bad but maybe heavy once you start to upgrade. The grips are uncomfortable if you don't wear gloves, and the saddle damages easily and feels pretty hard, but both of those are no-brainers to fix.
Similar Products Used:
Never rode any other FS bikes.
Bike Setup:
Stock except for cheap clipless SPD style pedals. The stock pedals are OK, held up to some mashing, but were to easy to pop out of while jumping. I also zip-stripped the rear cables to the shock so that they can't bow out when the suspension compresses- this was causing me bruises on my calves!
Bottom Line:
Buy it if you want to push yourself into a "freeriding" state of mind without breaking the bank. It's a great general purpose bike that does most trails better than an XC bike and is cheap enough to commute on if your route allows some fun like stair riding and drops.
With this bike, I've out-ridden folks I did not expect to and taken on terrain I'd never considered facing before. Its a great bike for agressive trail riding and some urban goofery, as long as you don't have to cross a lot of 8+ inch obstacles. It has smoothly handled rocky roads, steep descents, 4 foot drops, steep climbs, and generally begs me to ride fast and hard. No real mechanical failures yet, just a lot of cosmetic bashing. The frame design leaves a lot of room for when you muscle it around- I've never had another frame that I didn't hit some body part on.
I'm not really sure its worth putting a lot of money into upgrading, however. I've only had it 3 months and I'm already considering a 2001 Iron Horse G-spot from Supergo- for $1200, I could upgrade the FSR with better suspension, wheels, and disc brakes, or I could get a whole new bike that has every upgrade I was planning.

Watch for hairline cracks around the tube that links the swingarm together just behind the BB. The inside corner of the tube is not chamfered leading to a stress riser in that area causing some cracks possibly due to residual stresses. Disassemble the forks regularly if you ride in the east, mud will get trapped under the fork boots resulting in pitting of the sliders which will destroy the low friction lining on the bushings. These are easy to disassemble, no reason not to.

First thing I did was throw the cheap pedals in the garbage and put on Time Atacs. The stock brakes are horrible in mud and wear-out in about a month after hard riding. Replaced them with Avid Arch Rivals. These are good brakes. Front derailleur is always banging against the chain and I have to constantly adjust. Will replace with XTR. (I have heard that the stock crankset is junk and should be replaced also). Replaced seat with Body Geometry seat and is much more comfortably. Front fork is weak, but that is what you should expect from an entry level FS.
Bottom Line:
This bike is a great overall value and will be awesome with some additional upgrades. The frame is solid as a rock! Have jumped it constantly and I ride hard all the time. Jumped it 12 feet and the only rattle was the chain. Have heard complaints about wheelset, but I think they are solid. People say the BB is too low and smacks things; What can't you guys bunnyhop?
Front shock is weak, but is good for beginners. I plan on changing the front fork next to a Rock Shock Sid XC.
If you are looking for a great bike for a great price, you can't go wrong. If you are an experienced rider, your better off spending more for better components, but if you like upgrading bikes (like me), than this bike is the way to go.

The tires are awesome and of high quality. I've launched off about a 5 footer with no problems at all, I LOVE THIS BIKE its worth every pennie
Weaknesses:
the rims are a little heavy and the brakes aren't the greatest and shocks are a little to small for the bike 3" of travel ain't much for full suspension. go for 4 or 5"
Similar Products Used:

Bottom Line:
for a beginner to intermediate rider the bike is sweet as it is and can tackle anything and want even more. the tires are long lasting even on pavment, I have done a couple 7ft drops and the bike didn't even make a sound except for chain noise. The brakes gotta go if your a intermediate rider cuase Tektro just doesn't cut it. Suspension is a bit too soft and short of travel.

Well, the shop i bought it from let me trash it for a week and only charged me 130 bucks for my upgrades...all of them. So for $810 out the door it was the best deal going. Im 6' 180lbs and mainly ride technical, short downhill, and take drops of 2-4 feet. So far its taken the abuse, im not going to whine about the brakes or its weight cause im strong enough to turn the crank when i need to and i can lock up the wheels on command...besides, i bought it to play on, not to race with. Durability and crashworthyness were my major concern LoL. but if you buy it throw a 100mm fork and some pedals of choice before you take it for a spin...youll have alot less to whine about

Weaknesses:

Bottom Line:
The rear shock works okay, I haven't tried any others, but the reviews for it are pretty unfavorable... I don't know what people are talking about with the poor brake stuff, I can easily lock up my tires on any surface -- I figure that when yo uget to that strength you need to worry more about the tread on your tires than the strength of the brakes. My front middle chainring and the bottom bracket were initially faulty, but they were replaced under warranty very quickly and painlessly. BTW, if your front middle chainring bends up under pressure, get it replaced, don't use a hammer. I expect the first thing to be upgraded will be the rear shock, it doesn't take out the small bumps very well, after that will go the front shock -- everything else works real well. I'll be racing it in a few days on downhill and XC courses, the shocks are adjustable enough to fit it for both. Overall I'd say it's a good value -- a quality mix between a XC and downhill bike, could be lighter for XC and could be softer for downhill, but takes care of both well.

-The frame ROCKS!! -Uses a genuine Horst Link -Proven FSR design -Awesome Fox Vanilla rear shock -Decent Manitou Magnum fork -Good tires -Deore parts are pretty good
Weaknesses:
-Too bobby -Wheelset,cranks suck fat ass!! -Bottom bracket is too low(resulting in cranks getting smacked on rocks--not good) -Tektro brakes are okay, but won't last too long! -Not too crazy about the paint job(silver and orange..ugh) -Complicated suspension linkage(could develop problems..)
Similar Products Used:
Jamis Dakar Sport(trust me--the Specialized is far better)
Bike Setup:
Rochopper A1 FS(hardtail with identical drivetrain and component package)
Bottom Line:
Although this is a very nice suspension bike for a good price,I still prefer my hardtail. The Rockhopper FSR's main flaws are its low BB,which can be a real problem in technical terrain, and its complicated suspension--although it's plush and very active-feeling,it bobs rather obtrusively and has too many parts to fix if something goes wrong.
That said, the fact that it is full-suspension might appeal to you.Just prepare to upgrade a few things,as its component selection is a little sucky--but that's normal for this price. The frame and rear shock are both very,VERY good--that's good news for those who want to upgrade.
All in all,the FSR is mighty good for this price range, but try it before you buy it!!

Yet it does ride better than I could have ever hoped. I love this bike and so does a friend of mine who rides a GT worth 3 times as much as mine. The brakes are not top of the line but stop me on a dime when I ask it and are better than any set of disc brakes I tried on several other rides. This is an excellent beginner/novice bike and can be upgraded to a higher level with minimal components.

This is a great bike now I have sorted it out. Put a stiffer spring on it, whack on a set of 100mm travel forks and shorter cranks no more BB hassles (oh yeah and practice yr pedaling). At 85kg I was to heavy for the 600lbs spring on the rear shock which exaggerated the bb problem. No complaints about the Manitou Magnums they are now on the wifes bike, but I wanted a bit more travel. This bike is great for hacking, jumping or even a long day in the saddle! Paid $1495 Aus for it spent a bit getting it right but am now very happy.

value, Comfort, Proven suspension design at a low price, Suspension actually works. Despite my size and multiple pivots this bike feels prety flex free and exhibits no squeaks or rattles.9-speed. Feels much lighter than it is.
Weaknesses:
Brakes have serious flex, springs are mega soft unless you weigh a buck twenty or never venture off bike paths, Pedals appear to be made out of a metal softer than my midsection. Note to Specialized: Pedals softer than my midsection are not a good thing. When changing shock bike did not sag one bit. These bushings may be durable, but they sure do have some stiction.

Bottom Line:
Great bike. If you are a big person like me get used to the bike with the soft springs and then step up to some springs that match your weight. You will not lose any of the suppleness (you won't have to run so much preload to compensate for the soft springs)and the bike will take the larger hits with much more composure. The heavier springs also seem to help keep the low BB out of the rocks. This is a bike that I like to put some mileage on. Feels like a true off-roader. nimbleness and suspension action more than make up for price-point weight penalty.

Weaknesses:

Bike Setup:
heavier rear spring, koolstop brake pads
Bottom Line:
Great bike, it begs for a 4" fork to get that bb off of the ground, my pedals are a twisted mess. I don't know what the plastic is in those pedals but it is alot tougher than the aluminum outer frame. It also handles a little too fast for me when crossing technical loose sections or diving into that murky mudhole with hidden ruts under the surface. As far as chain suck, I haven't been able to get any 9 speed to work in the mud yet so I don't blame the bike for this, I will just hold on to my '88 Diamondback for wet fall and spring rides. The original brake pads wore out in 1 muddy ride (push uphill beause of chain suck, walk down because no brakes) but the brakes are usable with better pads. If you are a serious offroader, I would save and get one of the enduro models. If you are a recreational trail rider, this bike is perfect.

This is a lotta bike for a little buck! The suspension (front & rear) is VERY GOOD, especially considering the price. The rear FSR suspension linkage is a tried and true design, and the Magnum fork performs relatively well.
Weaknesses:
The bike is on the heavier side, and the components aren't the best. The brakes and pedals should be replaced sooner or later, and the bars and stem are not super-strong, although for most people they won't matter.

Bottom Line:
This is an excellent deal, considering the only compromises Specialized made to get the price under a grand is component quality and weight. The components are easily upgradeable though, and the FSR linkage is just as good as the more expensive bikes. I would recommend this bike to pretty much anybody who doesn't plan to race, because it is a sturdy bike that can handle everything from high speeds to technical trails. Bottom Line:
An excellent bike at a rather reasonable cost. I have never ridden a bike that handles this well while traveling woodland paths. The tough, thick tires provide excellent traction, and the front and rear shocks are very responsive. The brakes will tend to wear out rather quickly however, and the front derailer is set very close to the ground, making ground skimming a rather common occurance. But its low center of gravity makes handling that much better! If your considering the FSR Comp, one step up from this bike, your getting only marginally more at a much greater cost. Go with the FSR!
