Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $400.00
Purchased At:Online
Strengths:Solid Frame, does what its supposed it, love the geometry
Weaknesses:I've broken near all of the original components over th 6 years I've ridden this bike, but Ive taken it way beyond what it was designed for, and placed well over 2k miles on it.
Similar Products Used:xc bikes: 02 enduro, 06 Giant Trance, 02 Bighit setup for xc, 98 giant hardtail (I forgot the model) and a rigid schwin before that
DH bikes: 02 ChumbaWumba Zulu DH, and 00 GT DHi
Bike Setup:BETD linkage, Azonic DH bars, sram 9.0, 05 Fox Vanilla R (3rd fork on this bike), Hayes hfx hydrolic disc brakes, chain, cogs, crank, shifters, pedals, bottom bracket....etc
Bottom Line:The first full suspension I ever rode. Let me start of by saying this frame will take an absoulte beating. This was the first bike I ever downhilled, droped, and dirt jumped, which brought about the upgrades in brakes and other componets (I even snapped the handel bars in half during one DH run on a missed jump landing). This bike was not ment for anything remotly close to that kind of beating I gave it, and yet it survived. I have used it for moderate drops, around 4-5 ft, and it keeps on keeping on. Not bad for a entry range xc bike :) After 6+ years of abuse, and a ton of miles, I've finnaly started to look for a new rig. The shock mount in frame is ovalised and the bushings in the suspension are as smoothe as sandpaper. All this aside I think this is a great bike. If I could find a way to restore it, I probably would. The geometry just feels right to me. I ended up with a 5 inch travel all round bike in the 30 lb realm based on the horst linkage. Im writting this mainly as a tribute to what I feel was and is a great bike, and to show that a well engineered bike can last a long time.

Strengths:Horst 4-bar rear suspension linkage. Good groupset component mix. Strong frame.
Weaknesses:Low BB. Under-spec'd front forks.
Bike Setup:2002 Psylo SL, BETD rear linkage, stronger front rim and spokes.
Bottom Line:I reviewed this bike about 2 years ago after I'd had it for about 2 months. This has been my only bike for that entire time, and as my riding preferences have changed, so has my bike. My riding now leans more toward free and DH.
Changing from the standard Manitou Magnum Race front forks to the Psylo SL has made a huge improvement to how the front end behaves under stress. The front end now goes more toward where I point it, especially in rock-garden type areas, where fork flex is noticeably decreased. Still a bit of flex at the front, but I'm sure that most of it is not coming from the fork, rather the still stock hub which appears to be rather light.
I taco'd the stock front rim some time ago, and have since upgraded to a heavier rim and spokes. Standard rim on rear still, but again, stronger spokes to keep everything tight back there.
The rear suspension linkage developed terrible stickion problems very quiclly. There is only one bearing in the entire stock linkage, the main bearing. The rest of the pivots run on nylon-type shims, which bind up something awfull, and no ammount of cleaning fixes them for long. With the shock removed from the rear suspension, lifting the bike off the ground with the full weight of the rear wheel etc on the rear suspension, the suspension just sat there, the stickion was so bad. I upgraded to the BETD rear linkage, and totally fixed this problem. Only problem now is that on the longer travel settings ( 4,5 and 6 inches available ) the stock 600lb spring is way under powered. I put a 800lb spring on, and this is OK for the 5 inch setting, but still too light for the 6 inch. Will be getting a 1000lb spring, which should be OK for all 3 settings.
Having said all that, I am still very pleased with my original purchase. I have not replaced either derailier yet ( LX front, XT rear ) so they are standing up to it OK.
I'm 6ft and 190lbs, and am doing a lot more DH nowadays. With my current setup I get by, while still being able to ride uphill and XC just fine. I've downgraded my original rating by one chilli overall, but standby my original value rating.

Strengths:Great first full suspension bike. Great frame design. Feels great on most terrain. I even bought road tires to work out on the street with it. Perfect for a beginner who wants to give trail riding a go.
Weaknesses:These weakness only pertain to somewhat hardcore trail riding:The bottom bracket is low so your pedals will pay a price. The seat post tube cracked after about 2000 miles of riding. The stock seat post bent as well as the bottom bracket and crank arms. The forks are weak too. No balls at all. The brakes needed upgrading. But, I cant complain, you get what you pay for. I was not sure of how much riding I would do so I started with a cheap bike.
Similar Products Used:Treks
Bike Setup:New 2002 Rockhopper FSR frame free from Specialized (due to the broken seat tube). Raceface cranks, mavic 517 rims, hutchinson python tires, Thomson elite seatpost, Bontrager fs2000 gel seat, Manitou sxr forks, shimano m545 clipless pedals,xt derailliers, avid single digit 5 vbrakes, Weyless 2014 handlebar, and Raceface Prodigy stem
Bottom Line:A great starter full suspension ride. Perfect for light trail riding or just a spin around the block in the city, Specialized makes an awesome product. I just applied this particular product to the wrong type of riding, and my wallet paid for it. If you are not looking for a hardcore trail buster of a bike, look no further. The specialized Rockhoppers are a great line of bikes. Need more balls? Try a Stumpjumper! I basically just transformed my stock Rockhopper into a Stumpjumper over the course of about 2 years. If I knew that I was going to get crazy about riding, especially on trails, I would have started with more of a high end bike like the Stumpjumper, but you live and you learn!

Price Paid: $670.00
Purchased At:Bicycle Village Lakewood, CO
Strengths:Frame (linkage system), Component set, PRICE, Handling, Upgradability...
Weaknesses:Bottom bracket (you've heard the stories already), Short seat tube, OEM seat, Specialized clipless pedals
Similar Products Used:Rocky Mountain-RM7, Ellsworth-Isis, Ellsworth-Joker, Trek-8500, Trek-Y5
Bike Setup:DH pedals, Specialized Comp saddle, DH stem, Replaced the rear shock (original was vanilla, 6.5 in. eye-to-eye, now using a vanilla R, 8.5 in. eye-to-eye, required drilling the frame) I was able to push the rear wheel down a half an inch, and also push the rear travel to 6 inches. I cut the seat post so that it will slide all the way down to the frame, and I replaced the XC stem with a cheap (short) DH one. As soon as I have the money, I am going to replace the Magnum with a Vanilla RLC or a Z1. The geometry won't be perfect, but I will have a 6" and 5.5" free rider for about $1000 total.
Bottom Line:The bike was a steal compared to the newer models. The component set (deraillurs, rims, brakes) has been down-graded on the newer ones. The low bottom bracket height is the only draw back to this bike. I rode it mostly XC when my riding buddies were riding an Isis and a Y5. It's a great climber and descender right out if the shop. Now I'm trying to keep up with an RM7 and a Joker on some crazy free-riding.

The frame is bullet-proof, drive train is good, Tektro brakes are almost as strong as discs when adjusted, I've yet to seriously thump the Ritchey rims (I've tried).

The only problems I've had were a cracked bottom bracket (fixed under warranty) and a lose front hub (still working on this one).

It's too bad you can't buy this frame any more. The closest thing is the 01 Specialized Team DH frame ($1600). If you find this bike for sale somewhere, grab it first...think about it later.

Strengths:Upgradability. Heh. Heh-heh.
Four-bar linkage rocks.
Great bike for price paid.
Weaknesses:Laterally, a little loose in the rear.
Built with many cheesy parts, like all bikes in this price range (Sub $2500)
Bike Setup:LX Cranks/BB, LX Levers, Kona Stem, Link & shock from 2001 Big Hit, Rhynolite on LX hubs, Marzocchi Z1 Freeride, Odyssey platform pedals, Kujo DH.
Bottom Line:This is a follow-up review.

This bike would have been better -had I remained an xc rider. Thanks to a buddy of mine, I have taken to freeriding and have not looked back. Since then I have broke the pedals, taco'd the front wheel, replaced the cheesed1ck cranks, brakes, fork... you get the picture. Even so, this bike (frame) is still serving me well. With the suspension upgrades, the bb is raised no less than 1.5" and this is now a totally different bike. The shorter stem makes technical riding easier.

I am still pleased with the bike, even with the dough I have thrown at it. It seems that only the frame (shifters, bars and derailleurs) is left of the original bike. Hope the frame holds out.

Time for one last upgrade....

My ratings are based on my previous review.

Bike Setup:2001 X-Vert Super, Secialized barends, Control Tech TI skewers. That's it!
Bottom Line:As an add on to my first reveiw, I wanted to mention what an incredible improvement a 4" fork makes to this bike. Not only is the action of the X-Vert obviously better than the OEM Magnum but the most dramatic improvement is BB clearance. Occasionally the pedals will still scrape, but none of the hard contact is felt as was the case with the shorter fork. The bike is now much easier and more enjoyable to ride over rough trail. The front suspension is now much more balanced to the rear. As an added benefit, the front end is higher and this changed the seating position and handling of the bike in a positive way. Supergo sells the X-Vert Super for $169! This upgrade made a good bike an awesome one.

Strengths:Specialized name, LT/XT Components, good frame, climbs well, great components and frame for the price. This bike should cost a few hundred dollas more!
Weaknesses:Specialized crank set weak, Stock Saddle, Manitou fork could be better.
Similar Products Used:Trek 4900, Trek VRX
Bike Setup:Manitou SXR Fork, Shimano LX Crank Set, Specialized Body Comp Saddle, Shimano XT rear brakes.
Bottom Line:This is a GREAT Bike with Great components. I bought this bike as a beginner and have grown with the Bike. I've put about 500 miles on this bike, including a lot of on and off road riding, and it has done nothing but impress me. The LX/XT components work great. I ride a lot in mud (there is not much else to ride through in Houston Texas) and the bike handles everything I put it through with ease. The Manitou Magnum fork could be better. It will leak oil if the cap is not very tight and is not very adjustable. Wait for a deal and by a better shock it will improve the bike dramatically. I really like the Manitou SXR. I bent the Specialized crank on a moderate wipe out. (I probably should not have lost it, but the crank should have handled the crash). I feel like I have more power with the Shimano crank set. The brakes are not bad, but a little weak. Put XT pads on the rear. It is a fairly cheap way to give the bike much better stopping power.
This is a bike that is great for beginners and has the components for those who want to race. Specialized did a great job rigging this bike. It has components comparable to a bike twice the cost. The weight is not bad for a full suspension bike and can be reduced with upgrades.
Bottom line - This is an AWESOME bike that can be upgraded as your skill or budget allows, but is a superb bike out of the box.

Weaknesses:Manitou fork is weak, leaks. Crank set ticks and groans. Wheelset is easily bent.
Similar Products Used:Giant DS-1,Mongoose
Bike Setup:Specialized body comp seat, rolf wheels, Marzocchi XFly 100
Bottom Line:Got this bike new on Ebay, it was a great deal at $600. Lots of good things about this bike. Specialized frame technology can't be beat. Active rear suspension gets great traction. XT rear derailleur handles shifting very well. Sun front chainrings and XT front derailleur also do their job without fuss. Put Z-1 XFly's on and they raised up the bottom bracket quite a bit. They work much better than the Manitou's, which don't match the bike. Stock seat is too hard and flat. specialized body geometry comp seat works much better and looks like it's made for the bike. The chain sucks, it lasted about 4 weeks, SRAM is much better. Richey Comp OCR back wheel is like butter. Taco'd it on a 3 foot dropoff. Got a pair of Rolf satellites. They're holding up so far. Tektro brakes are inconsistent even here in the flatlands of Houston. Normally, I need a large frame, but this bike is so stable that I can use a medium. 30 lbs is not heavy for a fs bike. Bottom bracket died last week and Specialized doesn't show an email link for support. Overall, if you have been using hardtails or one of those regular deadlink fs bikes with the WalMart geomtry, try out a specialized. It will make you a better rider .

Weaknesses:Weight, weight, weight... Specialized cranks, Manitou fork (out of sync with rear travel), gear indicators on shifter (who cares)
Similar Products Used:Haven't ridden full suspension since the first generation (AMP, early Trek designs, etc.)
Bike Setup:Stock - Fox Vanilla, Manitou, XT/LX, Tektro Quartz brakes, Specialized cranks, Specialized clipless pedals, Specialized Team tires, etc.
Bottom Line:For 650 bones the deal was heard to pass up. I was completely turned off by my earlier rides on full-suspension back in the eighties. I went back to hardtails (Specialized, Diamondback, Wheeler, Bontrager) for years.
My first ride on this bike sold me - the landings are soft, the component mix (XT/LX) is very good for this price point. Specialized should have upgraded the fork for matching travel to the Fox Vanilla and could have ditched the gear indicators. The Tektro Quartz brakeset is one of the nicest coming out of Taiwan and similar in peformance to Shimano. Weight can always be dropped... Some kevlar tires, lighter rims, etc.
Can't go wrong with a closeout deal like this one.

Strengths:Climbs well. The bike is responsive and makes riding technical terrain feel easy. The performance on downhill is also great, makes up for what this rider sometimes lacks.
Components are good, bike has a great feel (once I got used to it)
Weaknesses:Hard stock saddle
Low BB - I slam the pedals a lot on corners.
Brakes are a little weak - I will be upgrading the pads for starters.
A lot of chainslap, buy a Lizard Skin.
Frame stlye makes it a somewhat less than awkward to place on a car roof rack.
Similar Products Used:First FS bike.
Bike Setup:Stock with the exception of a Lizard Skin to protect the chainstay.
Bottom Line:Demoed many a ride. In this price range, I went for the frame geometry, componentry and Specialized name.
This is my first FS bike, and after my first ride I was thinking, "why did I buy this thing?" I wanted to get back on my hardtail. But after tuning the bike and getting used to the feel, there is no going back. I love it!
I purchased this bike as a 2000 closeout for $750. Had I paid retail for the bike, I would complain about the Crankset/BB and hubset components (seat, brakes) but I can upgrade some things and still be ahead. So for value, at what I paid, 5 smoldering turds. Overall Rating 5 smoldering turds. This is a great looking and great performing bike.

Strengths:Frame, components, geometry (for me)
Weaknesses:Well, at 28 lbs it is not exactly heavy ... but it isn't exactly light either. At this price I feel the front fork and the shifters should have been a level higher, but they are sufficient so I won't complain too hard.

Bottom Line:This bike is great. As set up it tips my scales at 28 lbs, which isn't too bad for a $k bike. The Fox Float Air R shock combined with the Judy C fork gives a great ride, and you can adjust them for more or less plushness. At 6' and 225 lbs I had to test / demo several bikes to find one that "fit." This was it. With proper adjustment there is absolutely no bobbing when pushing up a steep trail, and there is no pogoing after landing drops. I hit one part of the trail way too fast and thought I'd be jerky, but the tires / shocks made it look and feel easy. The Geax Sedonas ate up loose / sandy / rocky trail, and gave flawless control on the dh return at 25-30+ mph.

I would recommend anyone looking for a serious fs-mtb try this before buying a bike. It is by far the best fitting, best riding, bike I have ever owned.

Bottom Line:The bike is actually very fine off the floor. Here in the Appalachians the terrain is ROUGH. I regularly beat the crap out of this bike and to date I don't have a sqeak. Upgrading the fork to a longer travel solved a little of the low BB problem as well as evened out the suspension but spend the $40 and get a Rock ring or Toothfairy (trust me). Solved the sticktion problem with Mountainspeed's 3 pivot sealed bearing kit for the rear. Best upgrade ever. Rear is now smooth as butter and no maintanence. The tires are awesome and good for varying terrain. It handles like a dream although wouldn't reccomend it for big guys (I'm 5'8", 165) cuz it's responsive almost to the point of being twitchy. I like it, it goes where you point it. Before I bought this bike I test rode at least 10 different bikes. Climbs well, decends better than I can ride it, there are many occasions when I would have crashed out on my old hard tail but hold it together on the FSR.
Weaknesses:Seals failed in forks in 1st 2 weeks, fixed under warranty. Forks are a bit po-go stick like, I don't like them Free hub noisy from start, changed under warranty. The free hub and wheel hub are Specialized specials. It rains a lot in Wales, the seals in the rear hub and free hub are not up to the job, the grease is always being washed out of the bearings. No trouble with any thing else. Maybe a little heavy
Similar Products Used:1st full sus bike, bought to replace a 98 rockhop FS (fitted with Girvin x-link elite forks).
Bike Setup:Prety much as standard, Manitou Magnum R, Fox Vanila coil over shock,XT rear, LX front. Fitted Time ATAC pedals.
Bottom Line:I like it, I have done about 800 miles on it. I would have liked to have bought a Stumpy FSR Comp but did not have the money. It may be a little heavy, but it all helps keep the flab off. When I ride XC I have a pack which weighs 10 lb so what is a few lb's on the bike. When I ride at night I strap even more weight on the bike. I will be changing the forks soon, I just find them too bouncy and there is no adjustment. The rear shock is starting to get a little tired. I do not find the bottom bracket low.
If you want an easy to ride all round full sus bike, but your are on a tight budget, this bike is a good buy. Keep it maintained and it will last well. Up grade bits as they wear out or as your bank balance allows.

Strengths:the name specialized means everything to me
Weaknesses:it is heavy number one, and secondly and probably most importantly the bottom bracket and e-type front derailer. after having the bike for approx 3 months, i noticed the cranks were starting to get loose, i had them tightened and as a matter of safety i took the bike to my local shop. there they noticed that the area where the bottom bracket was located had stripped out. i was fortunate that specialized had no more of those frames and up graded me to a fsr stumpjumper, where one month later i had the same problem, now i have a stumpjumper fsr comp and knock on wood have had no problems.

Strengths:FSR link, frame
Weaknesses:Like everyone has said, LOW bb, I bash a crank EVERY ride. Aheadset, maybe it was the dual crown forks and my weight (over 250lbs) but that sucker made loads of noise after 3 rides.

Bottom Line:I didn't even ride it before I changed forks. I had read about the low bb from other reviewers, and the fix of throwing on a 4in travel fork (instead of the 3in Manitou Magnum R). I still hit rocks all the time. The FSR rear end is AWESOME. I will be getting MSR's bearing kit down the road (after I get hooked up with some Hayes disc brakes), and maybe their long travel kit (Stratos 'cuz Fox won't fit without serious mods). I started getting a banging noise from the Aheadset after 3 rides. I brought it back (still under warranty, but not wanting the same head set, even though it would be free) and settled on "The Pig" ($24.95) instead of a Chris King (big $$, $120.00 or so). The bike is a new animal, absolutely NO flex up front. This bike climbs well, descends well, comes with good components, and for the money... I'll overlook my headset experience and low bb. Definately a bike worthy of the upgrades I'm planning. It's easier to get rebuild kits for the rear end, both factory and aftermarket, than many other brands (ie. my Giant), something to think about if you're going to be keeping it a while . Also, it doesn't really look like a lot of other bikes on the market. If you're thinking of getting one, stop thinking and do it, I love this bike.

Strengths:Affordability. Active 4-bar linkage rear suspension. Strong and solid frame more than worthy of upgrading with lighter components. Manitou Magnum R front shock. Ritchy/Specialized wheelset still true after miles of rough terrain under a heavy rider.
Weaknesses:Heavy, but at this price you can't really complain. A few smart upgrades will allow the bike to shed a couple of pounds. The cockpit is a bit cramped. Limited space for seatpost to be slid down and out of the way for downhill runs.

Bottom Line:I'm a roadie and relatively new to MTBing. I'm also a student, so I didn't have enough cash to buy my dream bike. I had to make sure my money was well spent. I didn't want to make a thousand dollar mistake!

I researched every available full-suspension mountain bike from all the manufacturers. Specialized's Rockhopper A1 COMP FSR was the best full suspension bike at the $1,000 price range, period. It's spec'd with just the right combination of rugged, yet inexpensive (not cheap) components. It's a perfect bike for those new to full suspension or mountain biking in general.

Don't be lured into purchasing another bike with popular low-end disc brakes and inferior single or dual pivot rear-suspension designs. Both will leave you severely disappointed. Do your research and you will find the Rockhopper A1 Comp FSR is the best buy in the $1000 FS MTB category.

What would I change? Nothing, well maybe the saddle to an SDG Bel-Air, but that's a personal preference. All I've done was tune the bike to my weight by swapping out springs and elastomers. I will upgrade some parts, but not until they wear out.

Weaknesses:Specialized dual purpose pedals, light spring on Fox Vanilla, seat post, and of course the brakes.
Similar Products Used:Nothing touches this bike in this $ range.
Bike Setup:Dump the pedals and max out the shock, get to the rest when you have the time or cash. New pads will help out the brakes. It runs a bit short, I had to put the seat all the way back.
Bottom Line:I bought this bike for $1100 CDN (that's about $750 US) off some guy that shouldn't have paid $1700 because he couldn't afford it (no it's not hot - I have his receipt). He might of rode it 3 times in the city. This bike is plenty for more than half of the wanna be riders out there, including myself. It & I keep up to my buddy's $4000 S-works M4 just fine. As for the complaints of a low BB - isn't that the problem with most bikes? Anyone in this class of bike shouldn't worry too much about it being heavy, lose 5lbs off your gut and you'll be racing (but that would mean no beer after your ride so forget about that).

Bike Setup:Azonics risers, SRAM 9.0 brk levers, 100mm X-Vert, BG seat
Bottom Line:Go ahead, do the research (just like I did)...you won't find a better bike in this price range! Most everything else in the sub-$1200 range is spec'ed with bottom-end Deore drivetrains, and cheesy Jetts or low-end Judy forks. The Rockhopper is LX/XT, and the fork will last you longer than your first ride.

I've done a little bit of everything on this bike (DH, freeride, XC, even a little road), and I love it more every time I ride it. Yeah, the BB is a little low, you'll bash a pedal once in a while, but a 100mm fork will help that problem (it did mine). Its a little heavy, but so is everything else that's anywhere near its price! The frame is nice and sturdy, and that's more important to a Clydie (I'm 215 lbs.) than counting grams. It handles true over just about anything (no frame flex), and the stock suspension setup will work fine for any beginner to high intermediate rider.
No, its not a race bike, and its certainly not a $3000 Ellsworth or Intense, but don't compare apples to oranges. If you're a racer or a hardcore downhiller, get out your wallet and look elsewhere. If you're just looking for a reasonably priced, sweet-looking, WAY fun to ride bike that will take a beating and come back for more, take a good, long look at this one! I'd give it ten 'habaneros en fuego' for value if I could!!!

Weaknesses:BB is low, when your a heavy (FAT) set rider this is a problem. Pedal can be mashed if not to careful. Can be cured with FS upgrade. Magnum R fork seals leaked badly after weekend of hard riding, preload knob fell of and lost on the trail somewhere couldn't get one for 2 weeks...thats why I changed to the good old Z1's. The stock seat post could lock my seat rails and ended up damaging the head.

Bottom Line:Apart for my love of Azonic extras I added to the bike it still is great value for money. Its tried and true rear end is woth it. I am rather heavy 100kg,220lbs I think in coversion so the rear spring aon the vanilla is being changed to 1.75*750 to carry me around. Change the forks to a more travel version Z1's, Judy race 100's and you will notice a hell of better ride and fix everyones BB worries. It's a good setup stock for a light rider with a few mods it be comes even better for the larger among us. Future uprages will be to XT arms and ring as well as some HS-33 to give a bit more stopping power. Strengths:Excellent value for the price ($900).
Decent components to start with.
Great looks.
Weaknesses:A little heavy.
Low BB causes a lot of pedal scrapes.
Brakes just OK.
Similar Products Used:Tried a lot of Trek, K2 and other Specialized models.
Tried hardtail, softtail, and full-suspension.
It came down to a decision between the A1 Comp FSR and the A1 FSR. I decided that the stock components on the Comp were good enough to start with and I would replace them as needed. Too many of the components on the A1 FSR would need to be replaced immediately, which would more than make up for the difference in price.
Bike Setup:Mostly stock. Replaced seat with Spec. BG model. Added bar-ends.
Adjust front and rear preload depending on anticipated terrain.
Bottom Line:A good quality full-suspension bike for $900. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase it if I had to choose again.

Strengths:To name a few: decent price, rugged "big hit" looks, above average full-suspension feel, and it is a smooth shifting machine. On top of that, it rides lighter than it is.
Weaknesses:Not much. Stock, it is a little heavier than some full-suspension bikes out there, and the bottom bracket is a little low. Upgrades could help out most of these.
Similar Products Used:This is the first full-suspension bike I have owned. I test rode the 99 K-2 3000, '99 Specialized FSR, and Giant Warp.
Bike Setup:Panaracer Comp tires (Smoke and Dart) and some light tubes to shave off a little rotating weight. Specialized Team wireless computer.
Bottom Line:I have been waiting to buy a full-suspension bike, and in this one, I found what I wanted! If you do a lot of research, you just might reach the same conclusion I did -- buy this bike. I have to give Specialized a hand for matching up a bike with this much class at this price point. In my opinion, for about a $1,000, I got myself a bike that rides better than a lot of bikes that cost more. And I think a low up-front cost is agreeable to most of us.
Regarding weight, it is lighter than some (for example, lighter than comparably priced GT I-drives), but a little heavier than others (for example, comparably priced Sugars). My large frame bike weighs about 29.5.
Of course, there comes a time when I will wish it was lighter -- but I remind myself that training is just as important as bike weight when it comes to keeping up with your friends on the trails. The lighter tires and tubes was a start. And yesterday, I ordered a new Thomson seatpost (220 grams). In the future, I plan to look into some XT cranks, and maybe a lighter bottom bracket. Maybe also some XT brakes, and XT shifters.
As we all know upgrading can be half the fun of Mt. Biking. See you on the trails.
Take the narrow path, in mountain biking, and in life -- you won't be disappointed in the end. Matt 7:13-14.

Favorite Trail:Trailhead 307, Prescott, AZ

Strengths:This bike is whoop ass. I have pounded it through some serious trails and it took everything I threw at it. South Mountain in Phoenix, Spruce (TH307) in Prescott, Submarine Rock in Sedona and Slickrock in Moab...it handled it all, big drops, speed, jumps, you name it. I would recommend this to anyone who wanted to get a new bike and not spend 3000 bucks. It climbs like nobody's business and the rear tire stays DOWN real well. I loved the massive comp tires, they go through and stick to anything ! The XT parts are a necessity...worth the 200 bucks over the A1 FSR.
Weaknesses:I found you have to really pull pretty hard on the brakes to slow for tech stuff. Its not that they don't work, they just need lots of force, and after 5 miles of downhill your forearms hurt pretty bad. I think that I railed the pedals on a little too much stuff, only because they feel a little low...I tried to compensate by cranking the crap out of the fox shock, which helped but they just need about 2" more clearance on average. The bottom bracked got a little loose but its not surprising with the amount of punishment I shoveled at the bike. Oh, the quick release seat has a plastic insert that broke(I replaced it with a piece of random metal) and I couldn't keep the seat straight, which is annoying in the middle of the desert. The metal I crammed in there fixed it fine though. The front shock is great but I'd like 2" more travel for some of the really hairy stuff out there, I met the fork a couple times at Slickrock.
Similar Products Used:K2 Evo 3.0, Rockhopper A1 FSR, GT XCR 4000
Bike Setup:I left everything stock, threw on Scott bar ends. I will probably replace the brakes, and throw riser bars on it, but otherwise its fine.
Bottom Line:The bottom line is this bike ROCKS !!! I would but it over and over again. I tried a bunch of other bikes, it came down to the K2 Evo 3.0 or this one. I loved the front shocks on the K2, but it weighs a ton compared to the comp. I would tell anyone to get this bike. I had trouble with the brakes, and the amount of travel you get, but it is what you get to 1000 bucks, and I was really wailing on this bike ! You really can't ask for more bike in this price range. Strengths:The Horst linkage is the best. It climbs like a billygoat and is smooth on the downhill. Good component mix for the money. Manatou fork is extremely low maintenance, and the Fox Vanilla is smooth and quiet.
Weaknesses:Brakes don't work. The bottom bracket sits low so you slam your pedals on technical trails. Heavy.

Bike Setup:hayes front hub, and hydrolic brake. Rhinolite front rim.
Nashbar Clipless pedals.(I tried the Shimano 636 but they didn't give me enough clearance. I upgraded the rear spring to a 950 lbs.
Bottom Line:For the money this is the best bike on the market. It's a bit heavy but the traction you get when you climb more than makes up for it. On the down hills the bike does all the work. If you want a bike that won't break the bank but performs like bikes that cost twice as much stick with the rockhopper. The weight and the pedal clearance are the only negatives worth mention. Overall, I would buy it again in a second

Favorite Trail:Pontiac lake MI
Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:Awesome rear suspension, Manitou fork feels great, descends like a bat out of hell and feels very plush, it gives me almost a little too much confidence.
Weaknesses:Don't buy this bike if your worried about weight, because it's heavy (30 lbs). On my 3rd ride the pedal stripped right out of the crank arm, but was replaced under warranty. The brakes suck so i suggest upgrading asap.
Bike Setup:stock except XT brakes
Bottom Line:This bike is great, and for a great price. This definitely is not a light racer, but it's fun as hell on hilly trails, i definitely recommend this one for someone looking for a good full suspension at a good price. It only gets 4 chilis on value because of the crap brakes.
