Strengths:
It's a Specialized. Hayes Discs - more power and more feel than rim brakes
Weaknesses:
Low Bb - though with experience you can ride around this. Wierd handle bar bend Standard seat Standard tyres are a bit scketchy at speed
Bike Setup:
Gripy tyres [2.35 on front] Kevlar and Ti seat Fox Talas fork FSA crank and Bb No rain - no need for mud guards
Bottom Line:
After a long wait I bought this bike to replace a hard tail and coming from a motocross background I was keen to buy something that could handle the down hills. At the same time I'm keen to actually be able to ride to the top before enjoying the downhill raz, so a good climber was also a requirement.
At the time of buying the bike I used to ride in the bush upto three times a week. I found that on some of the more technical climbs, where I would struggle to clear the climb 1 out of 10 times on the HT, I would make it up 9 out of 10 on the FSR.
On the down hill I've hit around 80 kms.
Now days I'm 40 and still enjoy a good climb or a bit of a blast. My son is 10 and into mtb as well and we are looking forward to starting to do some riding and camping, lugging our gear into the bush on our bikes. I know the young bloke will grow out of his bike but I really can't see any reason why the FSR won't be doing the job for me for a good few years yet.
I guess a combination of the climbing / descending ability, reliability and the capabiltiy to get you through an epic ride makes this a real alrounder.
I've had the bike over 6 years now and have had to replace a range of parts as they wear. A couple of key items replaced include: - the seat with a kevlar and titanium cross country seat as this allows me to move around more than the standard. - tyres where I lean toward something with more high speed grip than standard to match the bikes capabilities. - Probably the best investment has been to replace the standard cranks and Bb with a splined FSA crank that is noticably stronger and translates more power to the rear tyre. [ believe me you can feel the difference ]
Other than that I recently destroyed the original Manitous and have purchased a set of Fox Talas as a replacement.
After 6 years I have no intention of "upgrading" to a new bike as I find it impossible to get on this bike and not have a smile on my face.

Bottom Line:
I am a tame rider with 3000 miles of mostly XC riding on this bike. It's been very reliable. It's heavy at 30 lb, but what do you expect from a disc-brake fullie? The headset gave up in the second season and I slapped a Chris King on. The cheap Specialized pedals self-disassembeld and I added Shimanos. The Manitou fork gave up after two seasons and I added the Psylo XC, a very cool, if heavy solution. I switched to Conti 2.3 tires for flotation, no down side there. Both cheesy plastic fenders failed and I replaced them. Some of my problems may be due to wet conditons here in the pacific NW. I wish the rear suspension locked out, but hey, all it takes is money. The rear brake cable should be routed along the down tube instead of the top tube-- Specialized has since changed that. The Hayes brakes feel awesome but tend to howl when they get hot and have occasionally been fussy about rubbing the discs. Awoo.

Strengths:
Hayes hydraulic brakes. FSR suspension
Weaknesses:
The bottom bracket is too low. The handle bar was too wide. The seat is very uncomfortable. Cheesy rear caliper mount (shark fin) No rebound adjustment for the fork. The chain stay cracked and was replaced under warranty. However, the replacement part did not have any bearings or bushings installed. Yes, bushings. The aft pivot point on the chain stay has bushings not bearings. Specialized states that all of the pivot points have sealed bearings but in fact they do not. I then had problems with the rear wheel staying in the drops. If I slammed a pedal on an obstacle it would nearly always pull the wheel out of the drops. Specialized sent a replacement 01 seat stay link but again omitted the bearings from the new unit. Now I have areas on the frame where the paint is blistered and bubbling up. Further investigation revealed severe corrosion and pitting under the paint in the blistered areas. The paint had not been scratched or damaged in the areas affected. This leads me to believe something was on the aluminum prior to painting. Specialized was contacted and would not warranty the frame. I am now concerned the frame will fail and the big S will not warranty it because I removed paint to clean and treat the corrosion. The bike was purchased 25 months ago in December 2000.
Bike Setup:
Selle Italia saddle, eggbeater pedals, Ritchey handlebar, Panaracer Fire/Trailblaster tires
Bottom Line:
The bike handles and rides well. And there in lies its saving grace. At the time I purchased it not many manufactures were putting Hayes hydraulic brakes on a trail bike and that made it a good value. Now, however, I would not make Specialized my first choice. There are many offerings now available from other manufactures that compare in price, performance and have less house brand parts. I expected this bike to last many years without any major problems. I was very disappointed with the incomplete warranty parts. I had been considering the Epic as an upgrade but now I would not consider a Specialized product.

Bottom Line:
Happy third birthday to my FSR Comp!
I've been riding this bike for three years this month. It is the only FS bike I own & is primarily used as a taining/beater bike for harsh conditions (snow & mud) when I don't want to destroy my big $$ race bike or when doing an epic adventures. I've put countless miles on it and have to say , I am completely satisfied! I'm still running the original wheels (replaced the bearings once and the freehub once), the original hayes brakes (at least 5 sets of pads back, 4 front) without bleeding the lines once. The Hayes levers suck (loose bushing from day 1) but who cares with that low of maintainance. The best two replacements on the bike are the Xfly 100 (rebuilt the Manitou SX 2-times before replacing it) and the Fox Float RL (blew up the original Fox Float after 2 years of zero problems). Having the tunability on both ends makes the bike perform better now than new.
The only bushing that I had to replace are the ones connecting the shock to the frame & swingarm. I have replaced them 3 times. This year will mark the first time I will replace the main pivot bearings and swingarm bushing - just as a precausion - they still seem fine. However, I am only 145 lbs. and used to riding smooth with a hardtail - so I am probably considered to be easy on the bike. Also, I run 170mm cranks and higher pressure in the rear with the 3.9/70.2 setting - it helps keep me from cracking the padals of rocks - still happens sometimes.
I purchased it as an X-country bike (no FREERIDIN' here) after having shoulder surgery and needing a smoother riding bike to train/recover on. It has stayed as a beloved bike and earned a permanent spot in my arsenal of bikes. It is certainly no hi zoot race bike but I never intended it to be. This is one purchase I will never regret.
Great that they fixed the low BB problem on the newer models but too bad they changed to the hideous monosque front triangle.
By the way - anybody want to sell their old fenders? I'm on my second set - love em' - want to be prepared when I shatter these ones.

Bike Setup:
Enduro with XTR upgrades, thomson stem & seat post, time pedals, mountain speed 6" shock upgrade
Bottom Line:
I got this bike a few months used from MTBR classifieds. It was upgraded with 'Enduro Pro' parts.
Bottom Bracket height was too low - I flipped over the rear shock bracket and fixed the problem.
4" of rear travel is more like 2". I upgraded with a MountainSpeed conversion kit and traded Fox out for a Stratos Helix for a full 6.2" of kick-ass rear travel. New shock also helps fix BB problem. Best upgrade yet!
Cut the handle bars down about 1 1/2" on either side - much too wide.
I was getting launched over handlebars on step decent (vertical) so shortened stem with Thomson stem by an 1.5". Problem fixed.
Cable brackets broke off downtube after many wrecks - use zip-ties to keep them secure.
Never used original pedals. SPD suck compared to Time Attacks.
I tacoed back wheel doing a 5 foot fall (my fault) cost $100 to replace. Other than that wheels don't come out of true easily. No problems with spokes.
The chain broke 4 times and kinked quite a bit - changed from Shimano to $hram and had no problems since.
Rear freehub is being replaced because after nearly 3 years and couple thousand miles - its worn out (imagine that)
I've been through four rear derailure hangers - they seem to bend easily. Had a problem with rear tire slipping out of bracket. Release angle is forward (bad) if skewer comes loose and rear tire pops out, you do a face plant. Problem turned out to be cause by a local bike shop placing a bolt on reversed.
Front Shocks - still pissed about Manitou's plastic knob on the bottom, even new 'Black' line has them. Plastic BREAKS you dumbasses! Why put a plastic knob on the bottom of a shock? I'd upgrade to Marzocchi but Hayes breaks would require an adapter which doesn't guarantee proper alignment of disks.
I think the most trouble I have now is Hayes breaks - had to replace a hub because disk bolts kept backing out. Disk breaks tend to get noisy as they get VERY HOT on long 4 mile downhills (I guess most will). As they get hot the fluid swells and compresses the pads. Occationally mounting screws vibrate loose and breaks must be realigned (easily done). The aluminum break levers bend after wrapping bike around a few trees and must be replaced when they cause fluid leakage from handgrip resevoirs. Read up on Hayes - bike shops can screw you for $$$ in unnecessary repair. Hayes still rock, problems are seldom and eaily fixed... and DAMN! They WORK!
Yes, I ride the bike hard. Paint is chipped and scratched. I downhill it, XC it, It goes through swamps, mud, rocks, sand, snow, ice and keeps on moving. So far suspention arms, pivots and frame are standing strong. Cranks & chainrings haven't bent despite many hard log crossings and drops.
This bike rocks! Well worth the money if you plan on using it hard but overkill for a "pavement/grass jockey".
New bikes with freaky designs come and go but notice the Enduro model sticks around. Its tough, adjustable and I will buy another one in ten years when this one finally falls into a quivering heap.

Bottom Line:
Fun intro freeride bike. BETD Link really changed the bike but requires a 5inch front fork to maintain a good headangle. The Vanilla RC W/ the BETD and 5inch fork are an amazing upgrade for the bike. I recommend it, but suggest staying in the 4 or 5inch setting(6 is too much for the headangle, unless you have a double crown fork w/ 5+, but I don't think frame is suitable). Replacing the upper chainring w/ the ring god made free riding even more fun(less worries and hassles of breaking upper chainrings). I'm a Pennsylvania weekend warrior who just likes freeriding all day, I never really use the larger chainring. Bottom bracket height w/ this setup is 12.75inches. Clearance between ground and ring god is 11inches.

Bottom Line:
Have put a decent amount of miles on my Enduro since my original review in all kinds of conditions and have continued to be extremely pleased with this bike overall. However, last week, I stripped out threads for the bottom bracket and had to bring it into the shop for repair/replacement.
Two customer service kudos...
First, without my having to ask and without even even speaking with me first, the LBS (Rock n' Road in RSM, CA) called Specialized to report the problem.
Second, Specialized agreed to replace the frame with a new 2002 Enduro frame. The best new...they're shipping a Pro frame in place of my original Comp frame. Very pleased.
The only bad news is that this is my long awaited excuse to upgrade some of the components. So, despite the free replacement on the frame, this will probably set me back a few bills.
In the end, not happy about the frame failure, but very happy with the resultant customer service.

The whole bike may be a little heavier now, but who cares, I don't race and I'm not a weight freak. By inverting the linkage it may affect the head angle, or even the performance of the rear shock. Try it out, what do ya haf ta lose? If you can, replace the Manitou fork for something that doesn't leak and can take abuse, I have dropped off of some 4 footers and it soaks it right up. I now have 1244 miles of trails in one year of riding on it. I have gradually upgraded some components, next will be the SX-100 Manitou forks. No failure there, it is just time for something better. Otherwise change the 5 wt oil often to keep it plush. I run 180 lbs in the rear shock and set for 4.6 ". I use the lockout fairly often for that pseudo-hardtail action on uphills and flat terrain. Because the 'Go and Specialized stood behind the product I am still happy with the bike. Did I mention I love the Hayes! I have 1244 miles on the original rotors and pads. Do that with rim brakes!!! (my review only applies to the 2000 model - not sure about the other years). Shortly after I bought it and tried it on somewhat easy trails, I was in Nirvana...what a difference from my old hard-tail. Then came the real test, real rugged runs. Well, Nirvana turned into Hell. Horror, this thing has a MAJOR DESIGN FLAW ! The bottom bracket is way too low and as result, one of your pedals keeps hitting everything that's a few inches high. Therefore, you're forced to stop pedaling whenever you see something sticking out from the ground (rock, roots, etc). If this was the auto industry, I guess they would be forced to issue a recall. I'm writing a letter of complaint to Specialized. This weakness alone is enough to highly recommended to stay way from this particular FSR model. Also, I would recommend to upgrade the front Manitou shock after a year or two. A Rock Shox Psylo would be a good choice.

Bottom Line:
I think this bike may be better for lighter riders. I'm 230 lbs and its a pain to pump up the rear shock to 200+ psi to get it to where I want it. Inverting the upper rear linkage helped considerably by raising the bottom bracket. I may actually keep this bike for certain conditions, where the shorter top tube would be ok - though I'm not sure what those are (any suggestions, email me at geardoc@yahoo.com ). This bike would be good if it came with flat bars and a slightly longer top tube, say 23 inches instead of this one's 21.5 inch. The low bottom bracket is unforgivable on anything but the smoothest trails. I'm not sure what the inverted linkage does to the head and seat angles - only more riding will tell. Also, inverting the linkage probably also invalidates the angle indicators on that adjuster bolt. Let me know if you've figured out what the new angles are.

This bike is great. The stock components work well and are well suited to most riders. I am really impressed with the build quality compared to a 6 year old Specialized Stumpjumper that I used to own. That Stumpjumper was great, but the quality on this bike is so much better.
Weaknesses:
The seat. I have never felt a seat that uncomfortable in my life. I thought the other reviewers were joking around or being picky, but I think the past comments have been overly kind. That seat is less comfortable than sitting on a rock.

Awsome bike first rear air shock I've owned, although rebound can't be adjusted it works great for me (200+ lb rider)shifts on climbs smoothley, HAYES Hydraulic Discs Yeah!!!! Eats pretty much everything I've thrown at it.
Weaknesses:
Front fork, upgrading to SID 100 or Psylo Race when I can afford it. Specialized pedals suck, replaced them with TIME ATAC. Saddle is a pain in the ass (lierally)

Bottom Line:
I love this bike, front fork upgrade will be nice but can't afford it now. The saddle is lame and uncomfortable, replacing it soon. Love the breaks they squeaked at first but that was a drag on the inner pad on the rear, tech adjusted it works great. This bike can take a beating, Ive thrown rocks, rutts, jumps at it and no problems at all, the bottom bracket is a little low but if you use your head when you pedal its not a problem. The upgradde to Time ATAC's was a must, Specialized pedals realy are bad. For a 29 pounder its feels lighter than it is. On Value it was a solid five, Overall a strong 4.5.

Strengths:
Awesome look ! Excellent value for money. Love the fenders, they "stretch" the bike and keep you out of mud and flying rocks. Discs brakes. Weight. Suspension. Quality components.
Weaknesses:
Paintwork. The paint is NOT protected from cables routine. Some major scratches within a few days of use. Too bad, Specialized did nothing to protect the paint ("clear" stickers for example) from the cables. Low bracket ? As I am 125 lbs, I didn't noticed it very much... Discs brakes are difficult to adjust (noise + rubbing) and almost impossible to purge if you are not a mechanic.

Size M. Almost factory fresh. Cut off the bar ends by 2 inches. Saw the seat post (I have short legs...) by 4 inches. Replaced the saddle from my older bike. I am using Time Atac pedals.
Bottom Line:
I wanted a FS bike that could do -almost- everything (challenging !). I used the GT I-drive concept for several days and was willing to buy the XCR-2000 but found it too expensive. US bikes do cost a lot of money in Europe i.e. the Enduro Comp's MSRP is $2300 in France ! Got mine for $1550, a great deal. I am deeply pleased with my purchase. I do what I will call "adventure rides", going out for 6-8 hours with my 1/25000 scale map and compass. All kind of terrain, up and down, with no performance in mind. Some called it FreeRide :-) The bikes performs very well, no troubles at all. The Manitou SX-100 is fine to me. The Fox-Float does his job perfectly. Hayes brakes are powerfull enough, despite some small problems (rubbing). Excellent value for money. Highly recommended.

hayes brakes, fox shock in rear, adjustable rear travel, very responsive, and fast!
upgraded to a marzocchi MCR 2001' bomber...a must to replace the stock manitou. Am soon planning on upgrading the crankset as well. other than that, I'm pretty happy with the bike...I'll just change parts out as I break em'!
Bottom Line:
I'm a big guy (230 lbs.) and I have a constant craving for hitting drops and jumps. that being said, the pile of crap fork blew a seal and leaked oil everywhere. deciding to upgrade to a marzocchi is the best thing I've done to this bike. The cranks are also a little weak for someone my size...they flex like mad, and I'm already on my second bottom bracket and crank (this time i bought a steel one...aluminum is too weak for a crank!). I've heard some people complain that the bottom bracket sits too low, and it does. however, if you set the rear travel to 4.6 inches you should have little trouble with hitting your pedals (I haven't had a problem since I lengthened mine out). As for the handlebars, I love em'--took a while to get used to them, but I'll never feel comfortable riding on anything that isn't as wide again. I picked this bike up for a fair price, and after swapping out the fork I'm into it about 1700.00$, and i'm convinced that its worth every penny. A very fast, responsive, smooth, and ultimately fun bike! However, if you ride hard, you can pretty much count on looking for a new front fork.

Well spec'd bike that can give rider confidence to handle variety of terrain. Engineered well for all around riding. Adjustable rear susp is great! Disc brakes are a must after being spoiled by them! Well spec'd for the dollar but upgrades can help. The frame is a lot better than the bigger "boom" tubes they used to have because lighter and looks better. The 9 speed gearing makes this bike much more efficient.
Weaknesses:
Cable routing is weak, thought bars too wide at first then liked the better control...esp for a larger rider. Feels sluggish at times in comparison to hardtail. Upgraded what I thought were weak parts (below).
Similar Products Used:
'98 FSR Comp, Klein Mantra
Bike Setup:

Will place Specialized Team tires on later. I have had good luck with Specialied tires but these were heavier.
Bottom Line:
Can you have your cake and eat it too?? It is close with this bike. Last year I had a 27 lb hardtail (Bontrager)at Moab and CG CO....this bike weighs 29 lbs and has full susp and a great front shock! ...and disc brakes! You can't (yet) have an under 25 lb full susp that will take the trashing. That was the goal....a light as possible, heavy duty full susp cycle. This bike is great for big riders that by default are hard on equipment. The FSR climbs well, goes down very well, and has adjustable rear susp. I upgraded parts to tune the bike to my style. The weight to performance ratio is excellent esp when you consider the price! This bike places you in that middle ground between free ride and XC....where you can do both to an acceptable level with one bike!

Bottom Line:
This was my second FSR. I just love the 4 bar link rear end but i was disapointed with this bike at first compared to the plush ride of my old 99 FSR. Then I smacked the bottom bracket on a rock(lucky is was not the chain ring). Take it from me pumping up the rear shock is a waste of time this bike rides too low ( the chain even hits the rear chain stays , but the fix is simple. Take off the rear upper link, invert it and refit now you have the rear wheel pushed down 1" more. Now set the rear shock with 20% squat at rest. Don't forget you may have to extend the outer cable of the rear mech but I just swapped this with another outer on the bike. Now ride it and tune/ditch/get used to the front fork.

I find that this bike really gives you confidence in the woods and it makes you try things you wouldn't normally try on a hardtail. The relaxed position on the bike really improves control (for me) and I find it climbs great. I will be trying to bring the bike weight down but I have to be careful 'cause I weigh in at about 210lbs and I don't want things breaking on me. Great value for the money. Hayes disc brakes!!! I purchased this bike because of that. The overall looks and design of the frame with the exception of the bottom bracket height.
Weaknesses:
The bottom bracket height. Too bad Specialized couldn't design it with a little more clearance. The handle-bars are too wide. I had mine cut about an inch on each side. The Fork is too heavy. The caliper mount for the rear sucks. The 2001 model has the mount integrated on the frame. Does anyone know if that part is interchangeable? The pedals suck. They're hard to get into sometimes. The rear shock is okay when it's working. I have had mine compress on me a couple of times already when I was riding Aliso Woods. I only weigh 140lbs. I'm no clydesdale, so what's up with that!

Sid 100. One of the best things you can do lighten the front end. XTR rear derailer, Cassette (Titanium low gears with 34 tooth granny gear is highly recommended), and shifters. XT hollow-tech cranks and front derailer. Richey Ti pedals. Serfas lightweight seat, Conti Explorer pro front tire with Serfas Gator in the back.
Bottom Line:
I experimented with the rear shock settings for a while and I feel that the bike set up with the 3.8" and 70 degree setting is best for all around. It handles better and responds quicker at that setting. When I purchased this bike, I felt that it was a little heavy and sluggish. After all of the mods that I made, this bike is awesome!!!

Value....Ohh..value. Great frame, Hayes Discs brakes? the best in the business. Plenty of quality componets. Basically, this bike can compete with others priced at near 2K. Suspension adjustability is great. I can tackle some Gnarly single track with no problems. Feels really light too; plus, blue color with red stripes looks kick-ass with the red wall panaracers!! I get compliments on it all the time. This bike feels super nimble and confidence inspiring!!
Weaknesses:
Stock Specialized tires SUCK. Handle bar is way wide. I had the dealer cut about an inch and a half at each end.
Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:
After all the little details it's pretty much stock. One thing you MUST do, is replace the tires. I set mine up with some Panaracers XC 210s. This is the best overall tire...great for down hill, and surprisingly light on climbs. That's the beauty about this bike, you really have nothing to upgrade...(except for tires and saddle).
Bottom Line:
The bottom line is that this bike does everything you want and more!! Razorsharp handling, plenty of DH travel, and with an adjustable rear suspension, a great climber. Some guys complain about it's lower center of gravity, but the truth is that this makes it react faster and with great prescision. Get one and let the good times ROLL!!

I like this bike, very nimble, the fast twitchy handling is great for epic XC rides. Good balance between weight and the amount of travel for suspension. My Hayes disc brakes had some issues with leaks, after taking the bike back to the shop, they took care of it, with no charge. I puchased this bike from Wheel Life Cycles of Belle Mead, NJ, same place as Jon described a few postings before I, I've never had a bad experience with them. As far as I know, that kid had messed up his bike on the trail and kept riding the bike until it was beyond repair. He didn't bring the bike back to Wheel Life to get it fixed, another place messed his bike up even further. The kid should not work on the bike unless he knows what he's doing, leave the work to the bikeshop guys that knows about the bike, they do the work for free for two years after the purchase anyway. Maybe if he hadn't worked on the bike himself his bike warranty would have been done alot sooner, as far as I'm concern, if I break something on my bike while attempting working on it myself, it would not have been a warranty. I don't think bad mouthing your local shop who handle your bike's warranty would help you get what you want.

It is such a joy to have a bike that need absolutely no maintenance. It practically fixes itself after the break in period of 20 hours of riding. I highly recommend anyone to buy this bike. You'll love it!!!!!!
Weaknesses:
-bottom bracket makes a clicking sound -back bushings always have to be tightened -Steel arm that connects from the rear v-brake bracket to the disc brake comes loose every once in a while -I did have a problem after the first day with the bike. My back disc brake was defective. It was leaking fluid. The tried to re bleed it at the store but they could not fix it. They ended up having to replace the back brake. Hayes breaks! Climbs well, full suspention, relatively light, good rims.
Weaknesses:
Bottom Bracket!!! too low, geometry is off, stem is too long, manitou shocks w/ plastic adjuster cap (what were they thinking?). Fenders look cool - you can't transport the bike with fenders mounted due to wind damage. I think I found a few places that specialized DIDN'T put thier name.
Similar Products Used:
Haro and Trek
Bike Setup:
Enduro frame upgraded w/ Pro components, Time Attack pedals.
Bottom Line:
This bike climbs better than my Haro hardtail!
I have found 3 problems with the bike - The bottom bracket height causes the pedals to hit when the shocks flex. Clearance is only a few inches on the pedals even on the highest setting. I found a semi-fix for the problem - flip over the bracket that attaches the fox shock and set pin to 70.5 x 4.6
The manitou shocks are okay but whoever decided to add a PLASTIC dampening adjuster to the BOTTOM of the shock should have his a$$ removed! - You can't even take off the front tire and set the bike down in the parking lot without fear of cracking the plastic cap! I will switch the shocks to Marzocchi Z.3 (far superior shocks) .. Manitou doesn't compare.
Geometry is bad - On step decents, you feel like you are about to go over the handle bars (and have). Even leaning far back - the combination of handlebars over the front tire and so-so front shocks give uncomfortable feeling on quick decents.
On good side - the bike climbs well!! And looks cool. The shifting is excellent. I offten go the entire range of terrain owithout ever shifting front derailer. The bike is light(I tossed the fenders). The Hayes breaks are the best! I put tie-downs on the cables, cut the upgraded seat post by an inch and shortened the handle bars.
Bottom line: Good bike once you fix the BB problem and shorten the stem.

Weaknesses:
The middle chainring folded over like a piece of cheese when I was shifting. (I only weigh 135 lbs!) The brakes squealed for a while, but so what... The fork's top cap adjuster crapped the bed, reverting to full soft! Which reminds me- the fork was way too soft for my featherweight self-- had to order stiffer springs. Oh, and the shark-fin rear disk brake adapter is lame for a bike like this!

Great price is if you don't pay list(1729). Bike handles great out of the box even better once you tune it to your style. Good climber if shock is set up a little stiff, mine is set at 10lbs. over my weight. Brakes are awsome. Crankarms are decent. Good weight for a dual with those components.
Weaknesses:
I read all of these reviews prior to buying mine and most mentioned the BB height as a problem. I didn't think I would notice it at my level of riding. On flat relatively regular terrain it's alright, occasional pedal hangup on roots when turning. On technical trails, forget it. I went to mountain creek and destroyed the big ring (nice one too) and busted up right 545. Next time out I'm taking off the big ring since I set the rear up to 69.5 with 4.6"(doubtful)which lowers the BB even more. For 90% of the riding this bike was intended for, it should be fine. No frame mount for the rear brake. Weak cable routing. The paint scheme! A minor point but why did they feel the need to put specialized everywhere on the damn bike. The S on the head tube is sweet. Maybe one other place and it would look great. The red stripes are bad as well. Hey at least is not glossy metallic!

I must admit it is a little heavy (especially when compared to my friend's Raven), but only when you are carrying it. it feels much lighter while ridden. the brakes took a while to wear in, after this much time they still feel like they are missing power and sqeak, but I also know that these are the best brakes on the market.
This is a great bike for the all around, fun-loving trail rider. Even great to make races even more fun, as long as you aren't too anal-retentive about FS.
Awesome bang for the buck!!!

Duration Product Used:

Strengths:
Great overall value. Smooth & comfortable ride. Hayes Hydraulics are awesome! The disc setup “sold” me on the bike. The rear suspension is way smooth, essentially bobless. Proven Horst link design. Mavic Disc specific rims. Sealed cartridge bearing hubs & suspension pivots
Weaknesses:
ULTRA LAME fork! Threads in BB shell were cut too shallow, this caused the BB to loosen up after only 500 miles. LBS had to “chase-out” the threads with a die. E-Type front der doesn’t help matters here, only 5 threads of the BB can catch the shell. BB height too low – 11.75” doesn’t cut the mustard, 12.5” should be minimum. Slamm it on rocks a little too often – unavoidable. BB should be a UN-52 in this class. Specialized Comp tires heavy and weak in the corners. Stock Specialized saddle sucks, Ritchie seat post is weak, looses adjustment too easy. Specialized pedals no good. Specialized grips too hard

1st thing, dis the looser fork!! The Manitou SXLT is flexy as a noodle, tune-less, NO progression, and confidence killing. A fork this low end should have never been spec’d on a bike like this. It detracts from the bikes full capabilities. It’s like putting Pep Boys shocks on a high performance Monster Truck – Aint gonna work worth a crap! I plan to mount a Z1 Bomber on it as soon as possible. Waiting for the 2001 product line to come out, hopefully Marzocchi will have a Z1 with lockout lever (I’m hopin’) As a previous Bomber owner on past bikes, this will give the bike the ability handle almost anything and inspire rider confidence. Specialized should raise the BB to 12.5” to keep the cranks/pedals out of harms way. There’s no reason not to. The Intense Tracer (which follows the same design) is 13.5” What’s up with that Specialized? Don’t get me wrong, for the $$ is a great bike. Of all the bikes I researched and test rode prior to my purchase, this bike out performed them all. A few tweaks and upgrades can cure many of these problems. Throw some $$ into a worthy fork upgrade and you’re dialed. For a 28 pounder it climbs great. Descends great, handles singletrack great. Loves rock gardens and technical stuff. I’d buy it all over again if I had to do it over. Anyone looking to buy a FS rig for XC/Freeride purposes would be truly happy on the FSR. Value rating would be five chili’s if the components package were reasonably better.

Duration Product Used:

Strengths:
Lots of travel, disk brakes, light, low stand over height, good value, well known company
Weaknesses:
Pivots The pivot between the shock body and the frame wore out after 5 months. I got replacements pins but you can't get the brass bushing replaced so the pins wore out again after a week. I need a whole new Fox rear shock that costs $$$! Why do I need a whole new rear shock every 5 months when a 5c piece of brass wears out?
Disk Brakes The rear disk does not bolt directly onto the frame like every other proper MTB made in 2000. Instead it sits on a heavy ugly lump of aluminum bolted onto the seat stay. The rear brake does not align properly, and can’t be adjusted any further, so it drags and squeaks all the way home. Why doesn’t the bike have a rear disk brake mount? The disk brake afterthought theme is continued in the way the rear disk brake line is attached to the frame. The steel hooks around rear disk brake line eventually cut through the line.
Mudguards The front mudguard can’t be done up tight enough and keeps twisting around until it falls off and you run over it. The rear mudguard has only one bolt holding it on so eventually the plastic wears around the bolt and the mudguard wobbled all over the place causing deep grooves to be worn in the seat tube.
General If you stack and twist the bars the shifter pod comes in contact with the frame first which smashes it open. Two chainring bolts fell out causing the steel middle chainring to break. The small chainring is steel too. The seat post has an adjustable range of only about 2 inches. The bottom bracket is too low. The rear deraileur bangs on the hoist link when you hit a bump. Dull dark blue with shiny bright red stripes looks puke.

Then - I purchased the Enduro - swithced tires for Continentals, and pedals for Shimano 747 - loved the whole setup - shocks are more plush and very enjoyable - improved tires and pedals give me great confidence, and I was already in love with the frame. This bike is awesome!

Bottom Line:
I work at a bike shop so I got a super good deal on a bike from specalized, when I was assebaling the bike the b.b. of the bike striped out because the machine the puts the b.b. in the clutch sliped so it put them in at about 3000 ft.lbs. of tork so when it was removeing it to be greesed I striped out the threads. we use thread maker to basicly super gule the b.b. in i't lasted about a mounth of light rideing then about the fifth time up at the trails when I was going through the trails the b.b. fell out and I had to cary it back. I went to the shop the next day and my boss called specalized and requested a replacement frame they called back an hour later and said they would have to figure out how they were going to warenty it. then they called back a couple of hours later after I left and said that they didn't have a replacement frame and what they were going to do wasen't standard policy but they were going to replace the entire bike under warenty and they wanted us to strip the bike and just send them the frame back and we were to keep all the parts includeing the fork shock drive terain pedals bars... and most of all the brakes and wheels. I got to keep a lot of the stuff and strip the old bike and build the new one on shop time. All right now how the bike works the bike handels very well in the 70.5º setting the 69º fells too slow. it doesn't climb well in the 4.6" setting and the big ring gets stuck on rocks and logs. However in the 3.8" 70.5º setting it climbs and handels beautifly. The fork and discs take a little while to break in the fork will break in faster if you set the preload as soft as possible and pogo alot. the fork and shock are both low end but still work resinably well but would both bennift from replacement.
final thoughts I should have got the enduro pro. this bike is great do every thing anytime in any weather freeride fun bike. by it if you want to haul your self up the hills and then haul ass downhill.
I gave it five stars because of the excelent costemer serveice at specalized.

The paint is the best quality I've seen from Specialized in awhile. The bottom bracket height could stand to be higer by about an inch or so. I especially like the extra gussetting on the steerer tube section of the frame. The rear shock required additional Nitrogen for my weight (200lbs) in order to get the rear suspension operating correctly. This was accomplished by visiting the local Honda service center (those motorcycle dudes were pretty stoked on the bike!).

I found this bike to be the best all around value in the full susp. market. Adjustable travel, disk brakes, decent components. I have not encountered the problem of hitting the pedals on the trail. I ditched the big ring for a damage control ring early on, level the pedals and glide over obsticles. The low bottom bracket offers awesome stability at speed. The bike does not feel as heavy as it is when ridden. Climbs rocky ascents better than my 23lbs hard tail. Do not let weight to be a factor when deciding. If you could only have one bike and you like XC and some DH this is it. I would not take it to race in either but if you seriously race you probably arn't reading this review right now (meaning you have your eyes on something else). One word of caution, if your a techno wennie and like to fiddle with your bike a lot the Enduro Comp is not for you. The Fox Air shock has not rebound or compression adjustment and the same can be said for the Manitou SX - LT. But I see this as a benefit. No playing around with the brakes or the shocks, just throw a leg over and have at. As far as the fork, I have had not problems with the durability of the Manitou. I am sure LT would not have lent his name to it if it were not tough.

Very well though out suspension design, durable, adjustable, well established, very efficient. Hayes disks brakes rule (also greatly reduces maintenace over rimmies). Graphics are great. Included fenders a nice touch. Plus-OK I'm weird- I really like the superwide bars
Weaknesses:
Main gripes are with the frame: 1. BB too low (should be 1/2-1" higher). Its so low in the 69deg ,3.6 or 4.5 setting, these two setting are essentially useless. 2. No integrated disk mount on chsainstay. Two adapters used to mount rear caliper. Adds weight, makes adjustment more tricky-as the primary adaptor has some side-side flex, and looks cobbly. (MountainSpeed makes a cleaner adaptor) 3. 1/2-3/4" more effective top tube would be nice-saddle is quite far back. Rear air shock should external rebound adjustment-as its a bit slow at lower PSI's. Also, should be protected with a cover/boot Fork has 80mm travel (with spring removed), not claimed 100mm, no external damping adjustments.

Bottom Line:
This bike rocks big time! It rides great, looks kickass, and its a great value (the disks' settup alone is worth $800). I've ridden it in more or less all conditions: dry, rainy, muddy, snow. It's really excels in winter on choppy frozen ground or thick snow (gotta love them disks) Its very efficient, and feels more connected in the 3.6 setting. The 4.6 setting works great for downhill work, or a more cushy (but less efficient) ride. If specialized can fix the BB and disk mount issues-this phenomenal bike would be even better. Great job Specialized!

Well enough of component talk this bike rides 10 times better than my Y-22 which could be pretty damn scarry at times(now it's scaring the hell out of my old lady,if she pisses me off I'll take her on a really gnarly ride I dont have to worry this specialized levels almost everything). The thing climbs like a god damned scalded monkey. The bottom bracket height is a nusance at first but you get used to it and forget about it after going down a few rocky hills(keep the pedals level though). I just cant get enough of this thing and that makes my old lady pretty mad but I have just the thing for her.Ihave to give this bike no less than 7 flaming chilis.Great bike for just about anyone whose not worried about pedaling around a little extra weight and just wants to have some fun, or ditch their old lady.

Bottom Line:
The bottom line is that the Enduro Comp is currently the most outstanding value in the rapidly expanding full suspension bike market.
Are there upgades that I would like to make down the line and does the bike have some weaknesses? You bet. (Specifically, the well-documented problem with the height of the bottom bracket and the frequency of pedal strikes.) But, if you can find a better set-up for around $1,600, I would absolutely recommend that you buy it. All of the components are solid and equivalent to if not better than those of other full suspensions in the same price range (also, nothing else I demo'd included the Hayes at the same price point).
I am a larger rider (6'2" and 235 lbs.) and I was looking for a solid FS bike that would provide good all around performance and excellent durability. So far, the Enduro Comp has proven to be all that and more. The Hayes brakes are truly a big differentiator and, if anything, give me too much confidence in the downhills. At 4.6/70.5 I have found the ride to be plush enough to absorb a lot of the roughness while being responsive enough that I feel in control at all times. The bike also climbs well and I haven't found the weight to be an issue.
By the way, a couple of wire ties should take care of the cabling issue. I am on a 20" frame which seems to fit right and keeps my weight centered in about the right place (I can really settle in and crank hard through the uphills and it doesn't take much effort to keep my weight back in the downhills).
That's about it...enjoy and good riding!

Holy Knobbies, Batman! This bike only gets better and better with each passing mile. I took the advise of other reviewers and switched the personality of the bike to the shorter travel setting to reduce pedal/ground confrontations. That, along with greater knowledge of when to pedal and when not to, has reduced the number and severity of the contacts with the ground. Another added benefit of the 3.8" setting ithe the overall feel seems more "connected" between the ground and rider. At the 4.6" the bike was exceptionally plush, like a fine European sedan. Now it feels more like a true sports car (perhaps a Porsche). I also found the Fox Float requires less pressure at this setting.
On that subject, the rear shock has held up very well. Not any leakage after 450 brutal miles. The rest of the components are performing very nicely. Only the Ritchey seatpost seems suspect. The Thomson Elite will most likely be the next upgrade. The hydrolic cable problem was mostly fixed by shortening the cables.
Overall, I've never enjoyed mountain biking as much as I do on the Enduro Comp. I am able to cleanly clear some of the most technical climbs and downhills in Southern California, easier than ever before. When it comes to stopping, the Hayes create incredible confidence. I have not found another bike on the market that does what this one does as well at this price range/value. Specialized hit a home run with this one.

Bottom Line:
This is my second review & I am happy to say that this bike has surpassed my expectations. It is a pure joy to ride. The only problem is the bottom bracket height - other reviewers have also commented on this & there is no doubt it can be a problem. However, by running the rear shock with slightly higher pressure than the manual listed for my weight plus switching the rear travel to 3.5/70º the number of times I smacked the pedals was greatly decreased. I've actually had a couple rough terrain rides when I didn't hit at all. (If you try this on your Enduro & it works let me know - I'm only 142 lb. & riding a sm. frame with 170mm cranks - so this may only work for me.)
Now for the good stuff - With the 3.5/70º suspension set up this bike is a cross country dream. The 4.6/70º is nice for big hits but the bike responds to quick movement over logs & bunny hops way better with the 3.5". I honestly love every minute of riding it after the travel tweek. The weight is of no concern on a fun paced ride (race pace will work ya!). The handling is very agile, the cockpit is the perfect size to move around on while navigating super technical terrain but also bomb a screemin' downhill -- and at the bottom of the hill -- you guessed it -- you got Hayes discs!! These brakes are super powerful & easier to adjust than V's. I'm worried about bleeding them & other maintainance but they are worth it. In the future when the weight of disks brakes come down I will be installing them on my Merlin race bike.
This a great bike for it's designed purpose & a great bike for the price. Compare it to others in the price range according to compenents & construction - ignore the weight factor - you won't notice it on the trail.

Disapointing. My 1999 FSR comp was stolen, and had it replaced by the insurance co with the 00 model. Later model does not mean better! This bike is 1.5lb heavier than my old 99 comp. The Judy XC fork is 4.5 lb - plush but too heavy for a XC fork. I don't know where the extra weight is comming from - same componetry - same scales at LBS. The bottom bracket height is too low for technical terrain - is really dangerous at speed. Maybe the 39, 3.8 setting is not the best, will try 70, 4.6 see if this works better. Would not recommend this at the moment, maybe I will get used to it, but is inferior to the 99 model. 2.5 chillis o/all

Strong & (somewhat) light frame. DISK BRAKES! Geometry/suspension that offers awe inspiring control and toss-ablity. Decent components. DISK BRAKES! Great looks. Did I mention Disk Brakes?

Bottom Bracket height is terrible! Hydrolic cables for the brakes are a mess but that is about all that's wrong with this ride.

Bike Setup:
Completly stock (except I upgraded to the Ti Specialized pedals) running 4.6" and 70.5 degrees. Ditched the rear fender but kept the front (it really works).
Bottom Line:
This is the sweetest deal in bike-dom. The Enduro Comp cost $600 less than the Enduro Pro (Came THIS close to getting the Pro) and performs almost the same. The lack of adjustments on the fork and rear shock have not been a problem yet. Both Manitou and Fox seem to gotten these things dialed in very nicely. The ride is very supple over small hits, just firm enough over the big hits and extemely active when you're off the saddle on the downhills. The rest of the components are so close in feel and quality to the Pro's that only Superman or a computer could tell them apart. I have not experienced any real drawbacks to the seatpost, pedals or handlebars yet (seems like those are the most picked on components by other reviewers). LOVE the disks. I'll never own a mountain bike without them again. I don't care about the extra weight, the Hayes are incedible & worth the price of admission.
With over 3200 miles on my URT Y-bike, the feel is quite a pleasent surprise. I had spent some time in the salddle of the older FSR and hated the weight and feel; felt like I was pushing a John Deere lawn tractor up the hills. Not any more. This bike climbs like a mountain goat, decends better than any multi-use bike and leaves the rider with a sense of total control and agility. So, you're saying "this sounds too good to be true". Just a moment. The bottom bracket height is a product liablity lawsuit waiting to happen. I have chunked my pedals (repeatedly) on exposed roots (about 3" tall) on flat trails. I figure, with proper sag in the rear shock a rider has less than 2.5 to 3" of ground clearance. Ouch, start learning to ride through technical, rocky or sloped areas without pedaling. Let me know if you know a way.
Oh yeah, Specialized did a cummy job on the cable routing for the hydrolics. I get tagged in the left calf on every pedal stroke. Many zip-strips have not rectified the problem yet. I'll submit a 2nd review later, with solutions if I find any.
Overall though, I think that this ride will have to be pryed from my cold, dead fingers to get me off the saddle. Many flaming chilies for the Comp with a asterisk for the rotten BB ground clearance.

My Chris King DiscGoTechs on Mavic 321's are on the way as soon as CK can ship the hubs.
Bottom Line:
Since riding my GT for some time, this Enduro feels like a ton. But it has a totally different ride than my old URT Joshua. I am getting a firm upgrade kit for the fork and a 650 x 1.66 spring for the rear but it rides great. I have only had the bike for about a week so I have not had it off the the grass and parking lot yet - awaiting the spring upgrades. I can sprint fairly well and I am confident on the bike. I have scraped my pedals on things I can clean on my GT. I will post more after it is dialed in and I get into some real riding. Make sure you contact Stratos before putting their shocks on the 2K bikes. The shock works great but does not fit in all the rear suspension settings. Stratos is re-engineering the lower shock mounting area of their shock to retrofit to my Helix Pro for free. It will be in production on their shocks very soon. Great guys at Stratos. Oh, I am 6 ft and 223 lbs and the Mavic 223's on Specialized Stout hubs feel solid so far as does the Ritchey seatpost. Will save perfect score for future review.

2nd review of this bike.
I have a major issue with the bottom bracket being too low. I live in a rocky area and every ride I hit my pedals. (once going 30mhp-NOT GOOD) Other bikes in this class have a 12.5"-13" high bottom bracket. Enduros have about a 11.5" BB height. BE AWARE THAT YOU WILL HIT YOUR PEDALS ON ROCKS! The Fox shock blew-up (replaced by Supergo that day) The rear hub makes a weird grinding noise when braking hard. Saddle was replaced first day out. The frame is a 20.5 and only offers a 22.5" top tube. Which means that a 6ft rider will feel to forward on the bike.
The bike is still a great value, but I really just want to pull all the parts off it, and put them on a Tracer frame. I figure that for the $1599 price that got me all the parts for the Tracer and Specialized gave me a frame for around $100.00 So does anyone out there want to buy my frame?
Riding: Solid, bobs on climbs, fast on the DH, ST is OK.
Bottom line: Good value, but come on Specialized RAISE THE BB HEIGHT PLease! Hitting the pedals at speed is not a good thing.

The biggest thing I was looking for was a frame that I could keep with me for years to come, and this baby is solid. Also, the disc brakes add to the value factor in a big way- I couldn't see spending $1500 for a bike that was upgradeable to discs down the road for another 500 bucks or whatever. The rest of components are all a step up (giant leap?) from my old junker, so they suit me just fine, and they can be upgraded as they wear out. Finally, the suspension- 4" up front, 4.6" in the rear. Sweeeeeeeeeet. I may have sold my soul to the credit card company for it, but man... just take this thing, hit the trail hard and with confidence, and you are in for a hell of a ride every time. :) No regrets. :)

Bottom Line:
This bike rocks. In the short time I've had it I've ridden several XCish trails and done some hard street riding on it with no real complaints. The rear end is much more compliant than what we've come to expect from air shocks and I was suprised at the ample stiffness in the rear end. At 200lbs and coming from a history of beefy Super V's I expected to feel the rear end sway but so far so good. The rear hub is starting to make a persistent (and annoying) squeeking sound that may need some investigation. I dunno if it's just me but my frame has a "17" sticker on it, implying it's a 17" standowver frame - usually appropriate for riders in the 5'6"ish range, yet I'm 6' and it fits just fine with the stock 135mm stem, so make certain to test ride this bike before deciding what frame size is correct for you. Past that I share the same sentiments as the reviewers above - the bike does everything well, offers plenty of suspension adjustment and is a hell of a deal for 1.6K

This is why I purchused an Enduro Comp: • I've been XC racing for 5 years at the sport level & thinking about stepping up to expert this year. I wanted to find a full supension bike that was going to be comfortable & fun to ride while logging in many miles of off-road training. • Budget - Racing isn't cheap & keeping my Merlin outfitted with perfectly functioning parts isn't either. • Durability - A bike needs to take a hammering in all sorts or terrain without constant maintainance. • Technology - Who isn't at least a little bit of a technoweeny? The bike has top of the line disc brakes, long travel at both ends and riser bars! Trendy!
How it Rides: • Suspension - Although the suspension at both ends of the bike are not high end race performers, they feel perfectly matched to one another. The bike is very responsive to weight shifts & even sprints well. • Brakes - The Hayes Hydro's stop great & offer far superior modulation compared to rim brakes, however they aren't the one finger brakes I had expected. To get full braking power two fingers are necessary(maybe this can be fixed with some system tweeking). • Components - Everything on this bike is great for the money, except for the items I listed in weeknesses they are standard for the money but for goodness sake the bottom bracket has a plastic lockring(Shimano can be so lame at times)! My Enduro frame is a SM(15.5") & Specialize did a great job down sizing other components such as the stem & cranks to match a smaller rider. • Special Notice - My local shop was kind enough to let me put the bike together out of the box. I was amazed at the care Specialized took in putting this bike together. Every single bolt was tight & the derailier alignments were right on. Most noticable was the wheel build. When I went to pre-stress the wheels & true them before riding(something every shop should do, but doesn't), there wasn't one pop or creek, not one, and they were perfectly straight too.
I'm still on first impressions since I have only ridden the bike a few times & only in packed snow & on pavement. My 1st impression is that Specialized put together a great package & built it to last. This bike has exceeded all of my criteria for buying a FS bike and in my opinion is suitable for everything except racing (because of weight) and everyone who is into having fun Mountain Biking.

I got mine for $1399. You simply can't beat this bike for that price. I'll upgrade the fork at some point, but I'm not too disappointed with the Manitou SX-LT. The bike does everything well. It climbs well, although I have to slide up on the seat to keep the front down and simple inspires confidence in every aspect of bombing in the dirt. I'm an aging, veteran motocrosser who loves cowtrailing and this bike does it all. Only difference is I've got to supply the power. You won't be disappointed unless what you want is a "specialty bike", one that's specific to XC or DH. In this price range there are others that are close in performance, but I don't believe you can find one that will exceed the performance, value and FUN FACTOR supplied by the Enduro Comp.

After doing 3 months of research I bought this bike. I can't find a better VALUE then this model. Everything else in its class was $2,300-2,800. I wanted a do everything-go anywhere bike and this is it. I do both XC and some minor DH riding, and this is the one bike that can do both -WELL. Though its not a super light frame, I know that I won't break it. Though its not a true DH bike the 4.6 in the rear works well enough for those days I do gravity runs. I was suprised by how good it climbs, better then my Kona King Kikapu. It feels super solid and it handles the singletrack nicely. I first rode it in the 60.5 degree head angle and in the ST it felt a bit slow. Once I changed it to the 70.5 degree, that seemed to help in the tight singletrack. The bottom line for you shoppers out there, This bike again is a GREAT VALUE! It's not the Intense I wanted, but it rides the same and costs half the price. My only beef is the saddle is weak (hurts my butt) and I would rather have a Z-1 on the front, but over all its a sweet ride. Mine cost $1,599 at Supergo in O'side. -OUT-

This bike can have four different personalities. The adjustable suspension chip can be moved between 3.8 & 4.6 in a matter of minutes with one tool. Each travel setting also can be taylored with two different head angles. After riding mine for an hour I switched the travel to 4.6 just before heading Downhil it was amazing even with the Fox Float shock. The bike is ideal for the rider who is looking for something fun to ride. Never again do I have to worry about dropping off a steep hill or taking it easy to avoid damage to a lesser rig. This bike is not quite the 25lb FS/XC rig or the Super Plush DH rig, but it is a Damn good mix of the two.I picked the Comp because it is basically the same bike as the Pro and the Expert. The frames are exactly the same with a few different components. They all come with Hayes Hydraulic brakes. The money I saved on the Comp I am replacing the stock front Manitou SX/LT with a Z1 Bomber and maybee an XTR rear der. Specialized did a great job on this bike. There is not another 4.5 FS rig out there which compares in ride, quality of workmanship, looks, and especially price.
