Favorite Trail:Anything with a cool breeze.

Strengths:Suspension: Even after having this bike since 1999, and its now 2006, the suspension has yet to blow a gasket. I've never lost pressure from it aswell, which leaves me to think I got lucky, as most products die at about 3 years.

Extremely Light: Sometimes I would end up on trails that even professionals would be daunted by, so I learned how to carry that bike at a sprint with it on my shoulder. Not even my old Chromoally GT Santa Anna BMX was that light.

Durable: this bike took a pounding.. Ive done everything from fallen about 10'(dont ask) to going through a landslide with it..that hurt.. alot. So far Ive yet to find any damage to it.
Weaknesses:Bottom bracket: I ran into some issues with this. I had resorted to using this bike for grocery hauling while I was in college in Arizona. I loved the location because I was in the mountains located JUST inside Phoenix City lines. Only downside was the intolerable heat. But the issue that surfaced was I was carrying 90lbs worth of groceries on my back, and I was about 180lbs at the time. 270lbs is alot, but for the fact that I TORQUED the crank RIGHT OFF THE BIKE.. ugh.. that sucked..

Right Lower Swingarm: The chain spends most of its time clacking away at the lower swingarm, a friend of mine wore through his eventually and it snapped on him mid ride. My suggestion is simply taking some weather insulation used for copper pipes in New England, and wrapping it up in some hockey tape.. removes the sound and the damage.

Tires: As mentioned before, the tires are rather thin. However after 2 flats, I got tired of it, and sliced up my now worthless tubes, and used them as a double liner for my current tubes. That plus no-flat tubing, I was able to ride in/over/through large cactus that claimed a number of riders tires.

Chain Stays: I broke mine within 3 months of getting it. I think I laid my bike out to prevent hitting something in the air, and when I landed, that sucker snapped in half.. the newer Deore model I have took more abuse and is still kicking. The old broken Chainstay didnt suffer enough damage however to ruin its performance, I have that as a spare for trailside fixxes.

Water Bottle: Terrible place! Ohwell I use a camelpak anyhow!

Seat: Peeling
Similar Products Used:Trek, Santa Cruz, GT
Bottom Line:This bike has alot of problems but its all in the character. I rode it, and rode it hard, and its STILL around after 7 years.. g'dam! The bike itself is wonderful to customize with what you need, and I've been wanting some triple clamps for it for the longest time. Last time I looked I was interested in some White Bros. clamps, but I've since gotten outta sync with the bike community.

I recommend the descendants of this bike, for I am sure its Phenominal!

Strengths:Fairly light weight. Good enough travel on the shocks and frame construction is strong. Nice handle bars and good shifters.
Weaknesses:The Shocks definitaly. On the front the seals for the hydra coil leak like a sive. Does not handle water to well, get into everywhere.
Similar Products Used:Trek Y-3, Cannondale's
Bike Setup:Full suspention, upgraded drive train and new larger tires, beefy new rear hub and wheel with stronger spokes. Phat downhill peadles replacing the SBDs.
Bottom Line:Great Ride, but does not always stand up to my abbusive ridding as the techs tell me at my local bike shops. Tricks and high speed downhill do a number on the bike, but it holds up well compared to my friends bikes.

Strengths:Unbrakable frame, wide handlebars, strong breaks
Weaknesses:Standard spring settings far to soft
Similar Products Used:Nil
Bike Setup:Long travel heavy spring kit. 950 lb rear spring. Welgo pedals.
Bottom Line:This is a great bike, but you have to get the spring settings right. I have a very stiff bike now as I am 240 lbs. The standard spring settings resulted in very little control when riding uphills due to pogoing, was being left behind by $200 10 year old bikes(very depressing). But going down hill was a different story, blast away I say, this thing is way better than I, it will handle anything.
Would recommend it to anyone. Only had one breakage and that was the smallest front cog, which cracked and fell off, still dont know the reason, but it was replaced by my local shop Supreme Cycles, 2 years after they put the bike together without a question at no cost.

Strengths:Suspension and rapid fire shifters work really well. As do the Avid 25 brakes. The Judy XC long travel front fork eats anything in its path. I changed the coil on the Rock Shox Deluxe from 700 to 850 and am somewhat happier. It still bobs a little more than I would like on the flat stuff. Downhill, chatter type hits, and some of the bigger hits this thing rocks! I have never been able to go downhill this fast! Once you get it rolling on technical flat sections and don't have to hammer the cranks anymore it screams like a skunk with it's arse on fire!

I've had to adapt my riding style to the bike (spinning instead of pumping), but it has actually made me a better and more confident rider.
Weaknesses:Bottom bracket is making some noises at less than three months that I am seriously not happy about. Pedaling is fine, but when your butt is out of the saddle with the cranks horizontal it sounds and feels as if there is some metal movement there. I do not notice it as much when ripping a trail. But that could be the jet wash passing my ears. Pedals and cranks seem a bit cheap too. Only time will tell with them. I have already switched to the Shimano M636's. I am also seriously thinking of switching the rear shock to a Fox Float w/ lockout.
Similar Products Used:I test road the GT I-Drive 2.0, was going to buy the 4.0 till GT and Schwinn went belly up (Major Bummer!), tested the Trek Fuel 90 (too stiff). Looked at a Klein Mantra, Giant something-or-other, and Gary Fisher Sugar(what's up with the bent top tube?). I own a Cannondale F900, and a Cannondale F400 prior to that.
Bike Setup:Judy XC long travel front fork
Rock Shox Deluxe (800 coil) rear
Mavic 221 rims
Ritchey stem and seatpost
Avid brakes
XT rear derailleur
LX front derailleur
Specialized tires, seat, and riserbar
Lizard Skins chainstay guard
Bottom Line:I love this bike, especially the more I ride it. It is the first full-suspension bike I have owned. I think it bobs a little more than it should (especially compared to the I-Drive, that bike had no bob whatsoever, and that was stock). That may be fixed however. This bike has done and somewhat exceeded anything I have wanted to do. Would I buy it again? Perhaps. Definitely if GT was still up for sale. Nothing else I've tested or owned comes close the FSR. Especially for the price. For $50 more than the 01 FSR XC I was looking at I got probably $200 - $300 worth of better components. It was a no brainer.

I think this bike, especially for the first time full suspension buyer, is perfect. I don't think I have owned a bike yet that I didn't want to customize to my own riding style. The bottom bracket is a concern though.

Strengths:Excels at cross country. Specifically this bike does well on flat or moderate slopes with rocky or rooty terrain. Good on downhills and technical work.
Weaknesses:Bike is a bit heavy for climbing in races or for sprinting on the flats. Tends to flex when you put the hammer down. Also the frame is difficult to carry in cyclocross races like 24hrs of Snowshoe. Pivits on the 1999 model wear quickly and need to be changed out every 1000-1500 miles. Chainstay is known to crack requiring replacement. Ive cracked one and my buddy has cracked three. Flex in rear causes the bike to be "loose" in fast downhillsand in cornering at speed. Comfortable light Specialized seat but the vinyl cover peeled up within 2 months (I still ride it but it looks like hell). Expect to spend 10-15 minutes on cleaning and lubing per ride outing to preserve delecate pivots.
Similar Products Used:Santa Cruz Superlight
Bike Setup:The original gear wore very well and lasted the better part of two years. Ive put Mavic CrossRide wheels on it - big improvement. The XT components have worn very well. The stock Avid brakes took a beating for an admirable 2.5 seasons as did the headset and brake levers all now upgraded.
Bottom Line:I have a love/hate relationship with the bike. When dialed in it is a fantastic ride. The bike makes up for its short comings with excellent traction and crosscountry performance. I hate the fact that I have to spend so much time on maintenance and I wish the bike were a bit lighter and had less lateral flex. Models after this production year addressed the flex and pivot issues by adding sealed bearing pivots.

Strengths:nice stiff rear, incredibly strong. I ran the stock rearshock after I trimmed the bumper to get more trave--rode great--then got the mrp kit mated with a zr1 and now it is a freeride dream. 5 and 6 inches of travel respectfully, and built up under 29 lbs. I have owned a lot of bikes but have loved only this one. It's not perfect but theres not much that I would change.
Weaknesses:I bought the bike almost complete but only wanted the frame. I have read that some of the components that came with this bike were mediocre, I still run the riser bar and like it. But everything else is new.

Weaknesses:SEATPOST definately,Rear tire wears down kinda quick, tires are thin easy to get flats, Pedals(but I don't clip in)It's a little heavy, but It's strong where it has to be.You need a hydropac, The water bottle placements are useless.

Bottom Line:This bike is new to me and only time will tell,But man this thing is sweeeet. It's great uphill if the rear shock is adjusted right. It's great downhill ,singletrack, jumps. Pretty much unless your a downhiller(serious downhiller) this is a great all around bike.I've beat this thing,It's flown down many ahill since I've had it. Some with me and some by itself. But I must say I love this bike. It floats over rough terrain and handles great. If you cant afford a newer model get an older one. This one is sweet and I'm not sellin. The only reason I don't give it a five is I didn't get it free and I shouldn't have to change the seatpost so soon.

Strengths:Great downhill bike, its taken tremendous abuse from me. No matter how many stumps, boulders and big air's i take, it keeps asking for more. Its geared to pedal around 35mph, so you can really get some nice speed on the downhills or crosscountry.
Weaknesses:I've had quite a few problems with the gears, not quite sure if its Specialized's fault or if it just keeps getting adjusted improperly. Also its a little heavy so its hard to take on long cross country rides requiring a lot of uphill or jumping, it definately wears you out towards the end.
Bottom Line:Hey, what can i say, its my first venture into the world of full suspension, and i love it. Its rarely let me down, and the positives far outway the negatives. If your looking for a bike to take the abuse of hard hitting downhill if you crash into trees a lot like i do, this bike will serve that purpose well.

Chain does make a lot of noise on down hills (hitting the chain stay) but a lizzard skin took care of that. Don't use the water bottle holders get yourself a camelback. Bike is 28.5 lbs. I rode the Sugar 1 on two rides. Although it's lighter at 24 lbs I felt more secure and enjoyed the ride more on the comp. If you've ever ridden Nobel Canyon this bike does it with ease. Strengths:kicks ass. really easy to bunyhop on this bike, once you cut down the seat post. frame can take a lot. love the 28 handlebars. handles really well. mavic rims can take alot of beats. hubs are really smooth. brakes are excellent in dry conditions.
Weaknesses:crappy bottom bracket. don't like all the specialized components, but you can always replace them once you get the bike. bottom bracket goes quickly. headset sucks. i,d like fatter tyres. seatpost way too long. brakes don't work as well in wet conditions. i,ve had a lot of problems with pinch flats with the mavic rims. only the front rim though. most seem to be around the tube seal. maybe the rim has a sharp edge or something. not sure
Bike Setup:stock, pretty much. i just replace components when they brake on me. expect to be replacing the headset, bottom bracket soon.
Bottom Line:really, really good bike. i actually don't downhill alot, but i do do alot of drops and a lot of urban stuff, and this bike can take a lot of beats. taken it off 8 ft drops and it just takes it all in, beside a brakepad coming off and a tacoed front wheel. not the mavic rim though. fame can take anything.

Strengths:This bike Rocks. Nothing that i find wrong with it. Rear suspension bobs a little on the road, but I hate the road. Handles really well downhill.
Weaknesses:Saddle is sore. Don't like the fact that you feel soo high on the saddle. Bike fits fine, but when you first get on you feel really high, but it grows on you. I guess this ain't a complaint, just an observation.
Similar Products Used:Rockhopper, Stumpjumper
Bike Setup:Wholly stock. New pedals
Bottom Line:This is a killer bike. Bought it in April for $800. Nice lines and beautifully set up right out of the box. Killer components. And the price....whoah nelly!!! Wait a year and get a great price on the closeout!! I love it. Don't like the bottle location and the seat is a bit sore, but that ain't nothing that can't be fixed.
Highly recommend this bike to everyone who wants to ride. Can be a little intimidating I guess if you don't do a lot of biking, but I love it. Takes a day to get used to the height of the seat...just feels really high, but it handles like a dream. Have been out everyday since I got it. Really fun to ride. And the price. I walked into the store and was looking at the '00s and saw five of the '99's in the corner on sale for $799. Fantastic Deal. Will be holding onto this one for years to come.

Strengths:It can beat almost every trail. Very complete setup right out of the box. It climbs good, very good. Riding single trails and technical trails is exciting to say the least, esspecially when it's your first experience on a full-suspension. It's XC kwality still amazes me even after 2 years of riding this bike.
Weaknesses:The only weakness I can find is the noise that is made by the specialized bottom bracket. After a while you get used to it, but still..
And when you are used to a race geometry, hopping on an FSR
can be a strange sensation. You have this idea that you're sitting too high on the bike. This can be a little scary in the beginning when you are taking steep downhills. But this last remark is not really a weakness, after a while the bike grows on you.
Bike Setup:Mine is a 1998 model. I swapped the handlebar for an Azonic DH and the peddles for a pair of Shimano DX right away. After a year I changed the Judy T2 for a Pace, great fork by the way.
Bottom Line:This bike is perfect for me. I'm not a very tall guy so the direct drive geometry suits me very well. My bike can take me everywhere I want to go with ease, comfort and pleasure. My first experience with full suspension (2 years ago) and now I can't live without it.
Highly recommended for comfort seekers and weekend dare devils. This bike is not for XC-racing though.

Strengths:Great bike for the money. The bike takes a pounding and keeps on going.
Weaknesses:Chain and derailleur make alot of noise clanking against the frame on rough downhill rides.
Similar Products Used:Gary Fisher Joshua, Trek VRX 200, Raleigh
Bike Setup:Stock, came with Judy XC (80mm) front forks not Judy C
Bottom Line:Climbs great. I am 185lbs and the bike takes some fairly big dropoffs and jumps without any problems. I have taken the bike to Moab and riden the Slickrock Trail with 3 foot dropoffs and some very steep climbs. The bike held up well and handled the 3 foot dropoffs that other pansies got off their bikes to walk over.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:You cannot buy a better bike for the money. Excellent components (particularly brakes.) Lovely HEAWGE handlebar. Any bobbing is caused by movement of your centre of mass, not chain-tension related. (just pedal smooth, don't stomp, and it's fine) Climbs very well off-road. Descends brilliantly. Inspires lots of confidence, but not too much (I haven't stacked from over confidence *yet*!!)
Weaknesses:Lack of disc compatability. Not much fun on long road climbs. Forks are not very adjustable. Fortunately they suit me as they are. Water bottle mountings (seat post and under down tube) are awfull for muddy rides. I find the saddle a little uncomfortable on long rides (and saddle decals disappear the 1st time they get wet!) The bike looks too good for a high crime-rate area.
Similar Products Used:I test rode a Trek VRX 200 which had pants forks, toe clips (ughh!) and seemed to bob a lot more (probably my bad technique!) I also test rode a whole load of hardtails at the time, including Treks, Specialized, Kleins and Konas. My old bike was a 95 or 96 Diamondback Topanga.
Bike Setup:Stock, except: Hope O2 Pro front disc, Shimano 545 pedals
Bottom Line:I paid £1000 late last April (1999), the RRP was £1200 but was lowered a week or so before I bought mine.

Don't buy this bike if you do lots of on-road riding. Get a hardtail. Do buy this bike if you do lots of offroad riding, but don't race XC (it's a bit hefty for that!) but it'll do everything else off-road just great.

The frame is nice and heavy - I'd be surprised if I broke it, and I ride it hard. The rear linkage system work very well on all sizes of bump, and the travel isn't long enough to wallow. There is quite a bit of stiction in the bushings, but I find that helps avoid bobbing when you're tired and can't spin properly anymore. Sometimes I think a rear shock lockout would be useful when I have to ride on road. (usually on the way to some good off-road.) My main gripe with the frame is simple. Where are the disc mounts??!

The wheels are strong, light and run very smoothly indeed. The mavic X221 rims have stood up to a real pounding, which I didn't expect. They must be built well. The front hub has this cool spindle that stiffens up the slightly flexxy Judy XC forks. Again, my main problem with the wheels is simple - where are the disc mounts??!

I love the 28" handlebars. Everything else just seems too short for me. I wish people who like short bars would shut it and stop complaining, cos they can cut any long bars down, but people like myself who *like* long bars can't glue bits on, and it's hard to find long bars.

The Avid brakes (1.9L levers/25 V-canti's) are simply excellent in the dry, but a bit iffy in the wet (as with all rim brakes; this is the main reason I went for a disc is because I ride in mud a lot.) I would recommend these brakes to anyone looking for value for money rim brakes. They work much better than 98LX brakes.

Overall, I would recommend this bike for any off-road riding, except all-up XC racing and full-on downhilling (put on a DH fork and it'd be find for the UK.)

10 Chilis for Value, 5 for performance. You can now buy this bike (1999 FSR Comp) for £700. Beat that for a deal!!

Strengths:Value - Nice brakes, good fork, good overall parts set. I got mine on clearance ($1100) A lot of bike for the money!

Climbs great and takes those downhill runs with grace. Rear linkage does a great job.

Durable - Takes a likin' and keeps on tickin'
Weaknesses:Yeah, the saddle stinks. No big deal though, I didn't replace mine until about a week ago.

Stock clipless pedals are kinda tough to clip into when muddy.
Similar Products Used:Owned Fugi hardtail and various BMX bikes. Tested Schwinn, Jamis, Spec Enduro, etc...
Bike Setup:Stock except for, Shimano 646 pedals, Headland Dirt Diggler fender and Sefras racing saddle
Bottom Line:This is a great bike. Climbs like a goat. While not really what I would conisder a true "freeride" rig, it is very well rounded nonetheless. With the exception of serious drops and balls to the wall downhill, I feel like I can do just about anything I want with this bike. I reccomend the FSR comp fully.

5 flamin' doo doos for both Value and overall.

Strengths:Plush ride. Bike climbs pretty well and flies down hills. I do a lot of xc riding and find that the bike is pretty awesome over the choppy stuff. The Direct Drive system is great. The suspension can handle the occassional bigger drop but definately performs better on the quick single track type trails with the stock suspension. The Avid vee brakes are pretty awesome.
Weaknesses:My bike came with a Judy T2 fork and it's pretty soft. I'm 6'1" 185lbs and the suspension bottoms out off any drop that's more than 12" and it bobs quite a bit when pedaling hard. I definately plan to upgrade both the fork and the rear shock. Chain slap on the chainstay was pretty annoying. Especially because the massive frame tubes amplify the noise. I pretty much solved the problem with a Lizard Skin.
Bike Setup:Judy T2 fork (too soft)
Rock Shox Deluxe rear
Bottom Line:This is my first full suspension ride and so far I love it! A couple of upgrades (stiffer fork springs for sure) and this bike would rock!!!! I'm planning to eventually put on new cranks and upgrade the derailers to XTR's. The XL/XT mix is pretty good for bombing around on the trails though. I have no real complaints about this bike and if I could do it over again I would definately buy this bike again. I'd recommend this bike for anyone who rides all kinds of terrain and is looking for a high quality bike that can take a beating.

Strengths:Nice plush suspension, can be stiffened up when required.
Bike climbs nice and descends well. Tight switchbacks a little tough...maybe it's me.After 2 seasons of racing/riding everything is still tight with no slop. Turning the stem upside down makes bike into an acceptable cross country racer and really helps in the steep climbs.
Weaknesses:I broke both upper and lower bolts-I'm 5"9" and 165lbs and don't do any drops or trials so the breakage is a problem. I went to hardened bolts..change the shock bushings as well. The derailleur smacks the chain stays but adding tension to the adjustment screw solved it, also added a lizard skin. I race x-country and in the long steep climbs the bike is heavy but you can make it up if the course has a lot of rough stuff to blast through. I do not like the specialized pedals, too hard to quickly clip in.
Similar Products Used:Specialized fsr-xc, Kona stinky deluxe, GT I-drive
Bike Setup:Added hardened bolts, swapped to 8wt rock shox racing oil in the judy xc-it is plush and won't bottom. Reversed stem to make a more xc riding position.
Bottom Line:Great bike but not a great xc racer..I knew that going in.
If you have back problems or want a plush ride this is the bike. To avoid any bobbing just spin. Climbs like a goat.
Descends very well but not indestructable...watch it on really big hits.

Strengths:Nice overall bike. Can do XC and DH.
Weaknesses:Faulty Rear Derailleur design.
Bottom Line:A great bike overall. Everything is great out of the box. Only peeve is the bad design for the rear derailleur. On rough parts of the ride, it derailleur keeps on hitting the frame and makes a ton of noise. Handlebar is a bit wide, but you can always cut it. Overall good bike minus the derailleur design.

Strengths:Looks sharp, tough frame and energy conscience frame desing.
Weaknesses:A little heavy, severe chain suck and too small for a six-

Similar Products Used:TREK VRX 400 ; Fuji Alien FS

Bottom Line:I love the "direct drive" on this bike. It does make
a considerable differance for climbing. I'm definatly
upgrading the rear shock (RS Vanilla)to something
smoother. I found the rear linkages to be bolted on
too tight. Just crack the screws loose and retorque
and you'll get much more response absorbing small
stuff. Careful not to void your warranty! Also avoid
submerging it in the water,it doesn't drain at all.
If you do, just lay the bike on it's side while it's
not being used.I'd have to say,"BETTER SHOP AROUND".
Spend the extra money on a lighter, more seriouse
FSR and you won't be disappointed in any way.

Strengths:Nice to get back on a Specialized
Weaknesses:See below
Similar Products Used:My first full suspension, but own a bunch of hardtails
Bike Setup:Z1, bunch of good parts, beefy tires, no big chainring. Set up for drops, urban assault, technical stuff
Bottom Line:Bike rides great. Bought it, switched out a bunch of components. Put all the new parts on the old hardtail, put the freeride-type stuff on the FSR. Had a blast on it. Lots of big rocks, stairs and mid-sized drops. Inspired a lot of confidence on the technical stuff and at speed; bobbed a little on the climbs, but hey, it's an active design, waddaya expect.
Ran into a problem after about a month and a half. The head of the bolt that holds the top of the rear shock to the frame snapped off. The bolt then was pushed up in between the two side frame members, bending and dimpling them. After a couple of weeks and some great support from my LBS (Cycle Loft, Burlington MA), Specialized is sending me a new 2000 Enduro frame to replace it. If you have an FSR (or any full suspension) and ride it hard, you should maybe look into replacing the stock hardware with some hardened steel stuff from your local screw shop.

Strengths:Everything!!!!! The linkage is the best, very smooth, plush travel, extemely stiff cranks, pretty light, and holds up very well on nasty downhill terrain.
Weaknesses:Not enough travel on the back. They claim 4.3", but it is actually 3.7" ( There is a travel kit that gives you 6.2" with a stratos helix shock). Handle bars are very wide. Overall, no serious things that cant be fixed.

Bottom Line:Well, I havent tried out too many downhill bikes, but mine holds up just fine. I know its not meant for strictly downhill, but it is very smooth. I am going to get the mountainspeed travel kit (www.mountainspeed.com/fsr) which will increase my travel and will be plenty for me. Then I am planning to get either a UD 180, Bombshell Marilyn, Risse Trixxxy, or RST XXL. (Something with a lot of travel that is inverted). Than I believe it will be the ultimate downhill machine for me. In the meantime, I will continue to ride it how it is. I will probably give a review when my bike is complete. This bike would be a great bike for someone who wants a comfortable full suspension ride without the high price and something that will last.

Bottom Line:I've tested several bikes before I bought this bike. I realized that the Comp frame itself is exactly the same as the expert. The only difference is the components. I got the front shocks changed to Z1 BAM. 5-inch front travel with 4-inch rear travel seems pretty balanced. Now thinking about to upgrade the rear shocks to MountainSpeed's Fox, which includes the upper linkage, that will offer 6-inch of rear travel. The only thing I'd complain about this bike is that the linkages seem a bit too skinny. The seatstays flex when braking. But overall this is an awesome bike to ride around with. It shines on downhill.
