$1500.00 | | Purchased At: | Online | | Strengths: | Rides just like they claim. Locks out in the climb, enough travel in the bumps to keep you in the saddle. | | Weaknesses: | Setup is touchy. Can dial it in, but one rough ride and you need to start all over. Hate the XT dual control shifters, gonna switch to rapid fire after Christmas. | | Similar Products Used: | Trek Fuel 95, Giant HT | | Bike Setup: | mostly stock XT/XTR, 2004 Adjustable Brain | | Bottom Line: | This bike rocks. I couldn't believe the improvement in my riding a well built bike would make. It turns like it's on rails. As long as you don't plan to bomb 5'+ drops, this bike will handle most anything else. Built for racers, Fun enough for those that like to go fast XC. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from Sierra, Nevada USA Date Reviewed: December 2, 2003 | | Favorite Trail: | Tahoe Rim Trail | | Duration Product Used: | Less than 1 month | | Purchased At: | LBS | | Strengths: | This review is for the S works '04 Epic Disc (The bike says FSR on the chainstay). I ride sport class 35+ and am 5' 11" @ 195 lbs. I have been a shop rat who has had the opportunity to test dozens of nice xc machines. The 03 was hot, but with the addition of the new Fox Terralogic 100X fork and threshold adjustment to the brain, This is the best cross country race/all mountain bike I've ever ridden. I have about 16 hours in the first two weeks of riding. I like the thresholds both wide open, I get plush action of Float 100 and can stand and sprint with confident power. This bike has helped me ride better in every condition. The 24.25" top tube give stable tracking both uphill were other bikes stearing goes out, and on steep decents where you just need to get your but on the tail of the seat. The new 62 durometer Roll x pro high volume 04' tires offer trail bike comfort consistant hook-up, and good speed. This tire may be the one! All in all I'm extremly happy with this bike. With some good training work this winter, and learning the adhesion limits of this ride, I hope to move up a few spots in season points and be a stronger rider everywhere. | | Weaknesses: | Price-5g's-oh well the bike is perfection. The frame has the best weld work and paint I've seen from Taiwan. Right up with the US custom FS builders. The FD cable was frayed at the anchor bolt out of the box. No additional XTR disc quick tab spacers in the box to set up the front brake. The rear came preset safety wired. Not many mistakes in factory set-up. | | Similar Products Used: | Litespeed Hardtails, Turner O2, Demo of 03 Epic and Enduros | | Bike Setup: | Stock except XTR 960 low normal RD. Concor Seat and thicker Specialized grips | | Bottom Line: | This bike rides so well it justifies the price. New suspension expands the realm of use. An 03 Epic S works owner did a quick test ride tonight while the group was assembling for a night ride. Feedback on changes was very favorable. Nice parts package from Specialized. The crosmax SL disc wheels should hold up to my abuse. They were perfect out of the box. The new BG saddle from specialized is very comfortable, a nice version of the WTB rocket. I opted for my San Marco Concor out of habit. The Blue USPS edition Concor with matching color Specialized dirt bag and blue trim grips, gives the bike a nice patriotic look without going full stars and stripes. The blue decals on the fox fork and shock help here too. The red/white team finish looks like it will hold up well. Ok I hope to report back next summer after a few rides in Tahoe once the snow is gone. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
