Strengths:I have done it all on this bike. Its been downhilling once and took every thing I threw at it. I have taken it north shore riding like every month, I made it take 3-8 foot drops depending on the trail. Its easy to climb with and rides trails like there is no tomarrow. Its light for thoughs rides where you have to carry you bike up cliff so you can get to the best place.
Weaknesses:The screw in the back holding the shox the linkage plates keeps bennding. Fork bootoms a lot but the anti- bottom dampers help alot so you dont fell it.

Strengths:built to take abuse. I actually road downhill with this bike and it took it all. it takes a betten and keeps on going. the FSR techonlogy is awsome, the rear wheel sticks to the ground like its glue. the handling is really good. the whole bike is extermelly well built.
Weaknesses:The fork is a little week for me, I like to do aggressive cross country, and i blew the seals, the components rock,

Weaknesses:The only weakness are the rims. there not made for heavy riding.

    Price Paid: $1000.00
    Purchased At:Erik's
Strengths:Hydraulic disc brakes are absolutely incredible! The rear Shimano LX derailleur shifts flawlessly. Rear shock performs great. Handles terrific on climbs, downhill drops, and over rocks and roots.
Weaknesses:Front Shimano Deore derailleur, the Axel brand front fork, seat is a little hard.
    Similar Products Used:Trek
    Bike Setup:Everything stock.
Bottom Line:Great bike for the money! Love the disc brakes, rear derailleur, and how it handles on rough terrain. Seat a little hard, but can be replaced easily. Front fork is not the greatest and tends to bottom out at times. The front Shimano Deore derailleur is average, plan to upgrade to a Shimano LX crank and derailleur by next year. I plan to keep this bike for a very long time. I would recommend this bike to anyone - from a beginning rider to the experienced pro.

    Date Reviewed: June 26, 2004
    Duration Product Used:1 Year
    Price Paid: $1200.00
Strengths:Best deal for the money. Rear shock is great even though it has no lock-out. Bike climbs well. Front shock does bottom out a lot, but rides well. Disc brakes are great.
Weaknesses:Didn't care much for the Deore LX rear derailleur. It and the hanger broke after 6 months of riding (not a lot of logs and no more than 2-3 foot drop-offs).
Similar Products Used:Jekyll, Stumpjumper, Enduro, Diablo, Stinky, Trek
Bike Setup:stock...except for Deore XT derailleur and Serfas seat
Bottom Line:A great deal for the money if you are an intermediate level rider and enjoy cross-country and "relatively" tame downhill rides.

    Favorite Trail:Wilder Ranch, Saratoga Gap
    Duration Product Used:3 months
    Price Paid: $1062.00
    Purchased At:Sun Bike Shop
    Strengths:Frame, Rear Suspension...etc...
    Weaknesses:Definitely the AXEL fork.
Similar Products Used:First FSR XC bike.
Bike Setup:FOX Float 100RLC, Chris King Headset, Thompson elite seatpost and stem, Easton Monkey Lite Carbon riser, Selle San Marco ERA, Time Control Z, XT HollowTechII cranks, XT rear and front derailleur, ODI grips, KENDA kharisma lite 26 x 2.10 all condition XC tires.
Bottom Line:This is my first XC bike and I'm lovin' it. At stock set-up, this bike is not so bad but after making the upgrades I mentioned above this bike's performance just sky rocketed giving me the confidence to ride practically any trail conditions. The crankset and the fork upgrade made the major difference in the ride quality. I ride this bike almost everyday afterwork doing a quick 10-15 mile bike ride. I can say overall that this is a great bike and can see myself riding it for a while. Last and final upgrade will be the wheelset (going to get new Mavic Crossmax SL).

Strengths:The price was right, I got it as an 03 leftover..Was kinda sketchy on the Deore Disc's at first, But god those things are pretty sweet for the money. gotta love the FSR design, smooth suspension
Weaknesses:Got to be the fork....Damn that thing Bottoms out and makes a really loud noise on rebound, Kinda like it topping itself out....FIrst thing im gonna upgrade
    Similar Products Used:Jekyl 600, Fuel 80 , liquiq

    Purchased At:Bicycle Alley
Strengths:Very smooth and adjustable suspension, great components, very happy with the brakes on my first time with discs, Very smooth shifting, really like the riser bars, awesome bike for the money!
Weaknesses:Wish the rear shock had lockout
Similar Products Used:Test rode the 2004 Enduro but can't justify the extra $800, even though it was a great ride!
Bike Setup:Added a Cateye Enduro 8 computer and a Salsa bashring
Bottom Line:I am extremely happy with the bike, I can't wait to ride it again. I'm 6'4" so I was worried that I wouldn't be able to fit into either the L or XL category but XL was perfect. Very smooth suspension feel, first time with riser bars and can't get enough of them, I can't believe I thought about replacing them! Disc brakes are well worth the extra work, they stop you like throwing out an anchor and we all have to admit, they look damn cool! First glance at the saddle and I thought it would be the first thing to go but I actually like it, very comfortable. A great bike for all trail conditions and all riders looking for a full suspension bike but don't want to spend $2000

Mybe the tires and tubes can be improved.

    Weaknesses:nothing
    Bike Setup:no change
Bottom Line:This bike so far is overall solid, I've yet to have any problems of any kind. I would recomend it to any intermediate and up rider. It shifts smoothly and climbs fairly well, and the Shimano full hydraulic disc brakes are awesome. I've yet to figure out why there are only a hand full of reviews on this bike. Doesnt matter though, Im totally sastisfied with my purchase.

Strengths:Crisp shifting, the brakes are excellent, stopping you on a dime. Weight is about what I expected. Very predictable suspension, no surprises in rough terrain. The standard saddle is comfortable and I won't be replacing it.
Weaknesses:I've had to send in the rear shock for maintenance. It made a scary wooshing sound on rebound. It WAS repaired to my satisfaction (back in a week, and I got a loaner shock while I waited).
Similar Products Used:1996 Specialized Ground Control Comp FSR
    Bike Setup:As purchased
Bottom Line:Excellent suspension feel, entirely adjustable for a good body experience. I love the feeling of disc brakes, you know that low center of gravity, stabilty feel. Outstanding, worth the extra maintenance. I wouldn't botherspending the extra on the Stumpjumper (unless you just really like the name) as the Rockhopper is just last year's Stumpjumper. Specialized always comes through with a great product, and I always have a good experience with their dealers.
