$3000.00 | | Purchased At: | Rock & Trend shop in Genoa | | Strengths: | frame, brakes, fsr system, 24" rear wheel, multiple setting for optimal geometry, shock progression and travel | | Weaknesses: | DJII, wheelset (little too heavy), original roller pro 2.5 tires (not good when wet), too delicate paint. | | Similar Products Used: | Votec m6 light free ride customized (really not too similar...) | | Bike Setup: | 2004 SuperT fork, 2004 Roller pro rs 2.3 rear and schwalbe Fat Albert 2.35 front, xt cassette, truvativ 0 offset seatpost, Crank Brother mallet m pedals | | Bottom Line: | Great bike! Whit 38.5lb it pedals good thanks also to fsr system that virtually eliminates bobbing (not for the fork!). In DH is a monster, in jump landings a warranty!! Migration to tubeless (Stan's System) saves about 1.1lb. It runs faster without punctures or bites. 24" rear permits longer shock to reach 8" avoiding geometry distortions. U can also adjust geometry by changing shock position and sliding the fork in crowns. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1400.00 | | Purchased At: | albuquerque bicycle center | | Strengths: | this is an update to my previous review. Still going strong | | Weaknesses: | front derailluer, three chainrings in front, the stem, the tires. | | Bike Setup: | 02 big hit comp, 03 marz monster T, platform pedals, azonic loveseat, planet X headlock, irc kujo 2.35 rear, maxxis minion 2.7 front, 8" travel rear link w/ fox vanilla rc, odi lock-on grips, e-13 srs chainguide w/ e-13 bashguard, azonic 40t chainring. | | Bottom Line: | definately do the 8" conversion. it's like night and day. the whole three chainring in front thing has to go. go with an e-13 srs it works great. my bike is heavy now. it's sitting at an even 50 lbs. but it's amazing i love this bike. with the monster on the front it works out great. future plans include: chris king steel headset, sram derailluer, shifter, chain and cassette, possibly a new rear hub. I have heard bad things about the rear hubs on these. but i have no problems what so ever. if you can find one of these definately buy it.. it's just as good as any other if not better. i have a riding buddy who has a 00 big hit and beat the hell out of it and it never had a problem. he finally got bored with it and thought he needed a super expensive turner. well after 4 months of racing he cracked the shock mount. not to mention most expensive frame manufactuers only give a one or two year warranty, i'll stick with a company who actually backs their products and sells them for a reasonable price. {specialized} | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1299.00 | | Purchased At: | Westchester Pro Bike Shop | | Strengths: | Mostly all the components. | | Weaknesses: | The stock Specialized handlebars start to flex which makes it feel like they will break. The stem and headset are not that good either. the roller pro tires tend to lose grip on wet roots and rocks. Best thing to do is replace them. | | Similar Products Used: | N/A | | Bike Setup: | Pretty much stock except for IRC Kujo DH tires. I occasionally run Maxxis Hookworms when i do urban riding. | | Bottom Line: | The big hit simply Rocks. The frame is bombproof and the components are solid, which make for a complete package. The big hits performance is flawless on everything from agressive trails and downhilling to taking on the biggest drops. Got huck? Bring it on the big hit can handle anything you can throw at it. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

If you happen to run across one of these bikes for sale i would definately pick it up. also alot of reviewers don't like the color, but i kinda like seeing a more subtle color on a wicked bike | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

It puts up with the abuse from Attitash which is a truly sick mountain with some great Downhill and drops. I just reccomend getting a Junior t or something because it has more travel then the Dirt Jumper I's do, even though I have not used the DJ1's. $1000.00 | | Purchased At: | 2nd Hand | | Strengths: | The bike has a strong frame and isn't that heavy for what it is. It takes jumps so well and lands like a beast. The componentry is also good. Has same frame as other Bighits just different linkage. Fox Vanilla R | | Weaknesses: | As the bike is made by Specialized they put all their stuff on it which is okay now but as I get used to the bike, and go bigger I'll want better components. | | Similar Products Used: | Other Bighits, just more plush with 8". Craftworks DHR 208 | | Bike Setup: | Stock except for Azonic Shorty headstem and new rear derailleur which is Shimano Deore (XT snapped). Tyres are Maxxis 2.7 High Rollers on back and 2.7 Mobsters on the front | | Bottom Line: | This is my first dual suspension bike and I am already in love with this beast. This is also the first bike I have ever been able to get on a feel right at home and when it comes to jumping this takes off and lands better than my Hardtail. I feel that as I get better this bike will be easily upgradable and I can even get a rear suspension upgrade if I need to which I thenk rocks, other bike companies shoul try to be as versatile as this. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1625.00 | | Purchased At: | California Peddler | | Strengths: | Handles great, perfect geometry and fit. Love the frame design and overall quality and look of the bike. Gotta like the front and rear disc brakes since I am a motocrosser and am used to real brakes that actually stop. | | Weaknesses: | Though the Marzocchi forks are smooth and fluid, the stock springs are way soft. I have the stiffest ones (green paint) and they are way soft. The internal rebound control is a little weak and even slowed down to the max, it is still a bit too fast. I am told that for about $35 or so you can buy the external rebound damper rods that came on the DJ 1.5's, get two and have lots of adjustment. Doesn't really bottom that badly but moves around allot. | | Similar Products Used: | 1998 Specialized FSR Pro with Boxxer forks, Hayes Disc brakes. | | Bike Setup: | I bought the large because I like the stability of the slightly longer frame (15mm longer than the medium which is just under 5/8") and I was used to my 1998. It's stock for now, will likely buy the external rebound damper rods for the forks, you can get them from Marzocchi. The stock shock spring on the 2002 Large is a bit stiff at 650 lbs, the 550 lb spring would have been a better step up from the 500 lb spring that comes on the medium. I bought the same spring that comes on the medium which is a 500 lb spring and it feels pretty good. The 550 lb would have been perfect, but for $24 from Fox, give them both a try. | | Bottom Line: | Great bike, great deal and lots of fun. Lots of suspension, rear shock has plenty of adjustment and you will just have to find which rear spring you like. The Marzocchi fork springs are way too soft and turning the preload caps all the way in is not enough. I have my oil level set at 45mm using 7 weight oil. The frame is really rigid and gives you confidence. It's also a great looking bike. Good job Specialized!!! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

| | Bottom Line: | Bottom line is, for the money this bike eats the competition. Components are excellent, it rides extremely well, inspires confidence, and is upgradable to full on DH should you so choose. You can throw a dual crown on the front and not void the warranty (which is not the case with a Giant). This bike is heavy so don't expect to do much climbing. In my case, I race XC on my Stumpjumper FSR XC so if I want to climb Ill do it on that. Throw a chainguide and an 8" rotor on it and you have one hell of a freeride/DH/and DS machine. $2300.00 | | Purchased At: | Cycletech, Katoomba | | Strengths: | Specialized always have a good product for the $ and this is no exception. Compare it to other bikes at the same price and it wins hands down. This bike loves big air and handles soooo well on the rough stuff. Very nimble which was a surprise. Easy to get front end in air on technical climbs. Will wheelie all day. | | Weaknesses: | Heavy, but it was never meant to be an XC. Chain - should have upgraded. smashed it on first ride. Brakes haven't bedded in yet, hopefully they will improve. Would be good if it came with a rear shock that could lockout. The Fox RL doesn't fit. | | Similar Products Used: | Super V 700 Jeckyl Stumpjumper XC | | Bike Setup: | Upgraded rear to Vanilla RC with 800 spring. Wellgo Wam-D1 pedals. Figured the Plastic outers on the Shimano would last only 30 seconds. Everything else standard. | | Bottom Line: | My Stumpjumper XC went back to the shop three times with blown shocks (always covered by warranty - no probs.). When I baught the big hit they challenged me to do the same......I don't think I can. I put her in the air, land heavily, and you can almost hear the bike say, "Is that the best you've got?" . Yes it is heavy to bunny hop and does bob a little on climbs (probably due to bad technique more than anything else) but we only go up hills to go down the other side and this is where this bike shines. You can go through the boulder field instead of around them and the bike handles sooo well that you find yourself riding back up the hill...again...and again...and again. . At the end of the day if you like Xc but love single track, big air and downhills, get this bike. It is nimble and will take pretty much whatever you can throw at it. As for the colour, I buy a bike for how it rides not how it looks. If it's any guide to go by, my wife hates the colour. She does love the bike though because ever since I got it I'm never at home. Shall submit another review at 3 months when the wife leaves. . Now, where can I find a bigger drop off.......

I've had some time to get to know this bike and I must say I'm pleased. She has a keen sense of balance. She likes to go steep and she just loves to fly! The BigHit is very plush for this 33 year old rider and she doesn't let me down on some of the sketchy downhills, 6-8 foot drops, and plenty of the small hucks I've tried. The BigHit goes uphill great and wheelies are so easy I can't keep the front tire on the ground. She will bravely handle ladders and log rides even when I can't!
That's the good now how the bike could change for the better.
Colour - far too blaw for this beauty. I think she would look sweet with a deep reddish/orange-rust matte finish upfront and a black or deep grey matte finish in the back. This will definately be a winter project.
Bars and stem - Bars are flexy and bend easily. Stem is two bolt and has slipped a few times on me. Cranks - Have come loose a couple of times. I'll try some loctite. Shocks - I think a JR T would balance this bike out nicely but the DJ1 she comes with seems to be holding it's own.
What can I say, I'm in love! Hehehe! This is a great all around freeride/downhill/even light XC ride. Thanks to my LBS for steering me in this direction and taking care of some initial brake issues.

Yeah some of the parts are stock but most of us out there upgrade anyway... | | Weaknesses: | Maybe cable routing if you wanta be picky... | | Similar Products Used: | None! 1st Full-Suspension for me! Man I love this bike! | | Bike Setup: | Easton Carbon DH bars, Race Face stem, Thompson seat post, Chris King head set, Terry Fly-Ti seat, peddles (platforms), the rest is all stock... | | Bottom Line: | Since this is my 1st full-suspension I guess I can't say much as far as compairing to other bikes...but I did do a lot of reasearch before buying this SWEET bike! I was kinda worried about the weight at first, but once I actually rode the thing...all worries went out the window! It climbs just fine...I mainly ride single track and some urban...The bike is solid! Can handle stair drops, loading docks, rocky down hill trails, tech climbs, tight turns...This bike is a fo-sheezy a Freeridding machine!
I guess it your donig major DH stuff you would want the DH version or upgrade the Comp, which I understand is pretty simple to do...
The Bottom Line......Buy the bike...you wont be sorry!

"Come on for a bike ride he says." Ok, sure. I grab my harder than thou, Concorde Kudu (pretty sweet in '92)and proceed to nearly meet my maker. "Holy sheeeit," I gasp as I made my way down the first 1 foot drop. Deees is nuts folks! I'm too old, go home. Nope. Let's step it up a little. Time to research. What to buy, what to buy? I can't really afford it because I'm too responsible now. Friggin' Minivan! Okay, I can compromise. Hardtail. One downhill ride and only one. What the hell was I thinking?!!?? This won't work, there is no compromise when you seek the truth. Full suspension with the ability to drop and huck was the only thing that would do, and I wasn't doin' a Kmart special. I came to meet my BigHit after a very underutilized RockHopper passed it on trade. Oh well, it's not a fairy tale but I'm mighty impressed with my bike. $3000.00 | | Purchased At: | ProBike | | Strengths: | Hi, this review is for the Big Hit Pro, European Version. Advantages (to the Comp): - one of the best mass production freeride frames out there-> best value for the money - absolutely no play in the rear linkage after 6 months of all weather heavy riding, and it looks like this will be valid for the next 6 months (there are some other designs out there where you need very expensive bearing replacement kits only about the half time) - great REAL 4-bar linkage, besides hucking abilites it gives the bike pretty god climbing abilities - travel and geometry adjustment is great - Marzocchi JR T double crown fork is torsionally much stiffer than Z1, and with 170mm travel, fits better to the 160 mm in the rear - Fox Vanilla RC; it seems that the piggyback RCs stand up better to abuse than the Vanilla R ones - LX Mix works good - Sun Single Track Rims better than last years Rhyno Lites - 24" rear wheel is a blast on technical descents, great handling you can rely on when stuff gets tight - 24" rear is also cool on steep climbs, you can climb slower in the granny gear than with 26“ - better tires than last year, the roller pro's are light and deliver good grip on hardpack, however, out in the woods on loose, deep, rainy trails Gazza's are still hard to beat (but add 1400 Grams for front and rear 24" and 26" Gazza Jr. 2.6) - the new steel headset finally does the job, however ChrisKing's steelset rules - the original Big Hit Crankset is pretty cool, does not bend, takes everything
| | Weaknesses: | - Shimano LX Hub in the rear, gets loose each month, no problems with the front hub so far - Marzocchi QR20+ is pretty obsolete now, I’d like to see a real 20mm thru-axle for 2003 Jr and Super Ts - The stock wheelset is pretty soft, just because the original spokes are crap – I rebuilt the wheels with DT swiss spokes (2.0-2.35) and now the Sun Rims do not get untrue anymore - left crank comes loose all the time, looks like this is a ISIS problem - Marzocchi Jr T on that bike has no external rebound adjust, only internal (sucks if outside temperature changes a lot during spring in the alps) - rear Hayes disk screamed a lot and finally blew up soon on the the first long descents this spring (1500 HM+), the front was still good, but I switched back to Magura Gustav M anyway - the best freeride brake out there - original chainrings are a little bit soft and wear down pretty fast, I replaced them with Race Face - stock 11-34 deore cogset is a cool spec but shifts really bad, mounted XT 11-34 recently, shifts a ton better - shifting and brake cable routing in the swingarm area still a problem - Original Seatpost now better than last years ritchey, but still not that good
| | Similar Products Used: | - 2001 Big Hit Pro - 2000 Enduro, 2001 Enduro | | Bike Setup: | - Race Face Bash Ring - Intense ODI Grips - Syntace VRO stem (50-100mm variable stem length, short for descents or long for uninterrupted climbs) combined with Vector 12 degree DH handlebar, very ergonomic combination, the VRO is also stiffer than most DH product on the market but lighter and true DH compatible, machine tested to 300.000 cycles - Race Face XY Seat Post - Shimano DX platform pedals - Race Face Bash Ring - Gazzaloddi Jr. 2.6 24“ rear and 26“ front, better grip in loose humid conditions
| | Bottom Line: | currently one of the best stock freeride bikes for the buck, and I wonder why they don't have this model for the US or Canadian market. and a very troublefree freeride bike too, besides the tuning I did. I say "troublefree", just because currently I see some of my friends fixing the rear ends of their oh-so-expensive super cool canadian bikes much much more, than they ride ride them. its funny, that a californian company finally has a big hit freeride bike, that outclasses a lot of the current designs out there by the simple fact that it WORKS all the time. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$2000.00 | | Purchased At: | Georges Cycle | | Strengths: | This bike inspires confidence. I have never hucked so big on anything in my life. The suspension in the back feels like it will never end with the stock Vinalla R. The Z.3 130 QR20+ up front is super stif, tracks like a dream and is buttery smooth. The stock setup is amazing for the price bur still requires some upgrades. The rims, spokes and hubs endure everything even if they are a bit heavy. Hays disks modulate well and stop faster than a silod wall. the frams never creeks or flexes. Bushings are super smooth and last forever. This bike has been super for me, 5'8 170lbs. | | Weaknesses: | After a year I have had a chance to really get a feelfor this bike. The peddals are crap, I can clip in smooth but the cages break easily. the tires are great on dry hard pack, but are less than nice on anything loose or greasy. The big ring is a waste. Mine has been bent, chiped warped, fixed and bent again. Replace it with a bash guard. The fender is noce but broke early in the wnter when it got cold. The seat is kinda hard too. | | Similar Products Used: | First freeride used. | | Bike Setup: | All stock 01. peddles, big ring and bars should be upgraded. | | Bottom Line: | Point it down a hill, hold on and wait for your friends at the bottom. This bike bobs insescently under power. Climbing is a pain but possible with the 4-bar system. rapid stutters and regular curb size hits don't even slow this bike down. If you are looking for a bike that descends like a dream, is possible to climb, can be tossed around in the air and makes everything look like a launch ramp, this is it. I would never buy a different biek for how I ride. $ stars because nothing is perfect and Specialized still has some refinements to make with the spec, especially if the price for the 02 is up $500. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

EVEN THOUGH THE BIKE IS A LITTLE HEAVIER THAN I WOULD HAVE LIKED (I WEIGH 146LBS), THANKS TO THE 2.5 TIRES, THE FRONT AND REAR SHOCK, AND THE FRAME, THE BIKE RIDES SURPRISINGLY WELL UP HILL (EVEN ON TECHNICAL SPOTS) AND IT RIDES DOWN HILL AS SMOOTH AS BUTTER MELTS ON PANCAKES. IF YOU WANT A ONE OF A KIND BIKE, WITH A ONE OF A KIND LOOK, THIS IS IT. I DON'T THINK THERE'S ANYTHING THIS BIKE CAN'T DO, AND I PLAN ON PUTTING IT TO THE TEST AS BEST I CAN. HAPPY TRAILS AND SEMPER FI!!! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from Brooklyn fame Date Reviewed: November 18, 2001 | | Favorite Trail: | Plattekill's Hardcore | | Duration Product Used: | Tested or demo'ed only | | Purchased At: | Diamondcycle.com | | Strengths: | Strong frame, nicer spec than what catalog shows, pedals well for a big bike, great jumper, international standard chainguide mounting | | Weaknesses: | Not enough dh for me, and a little to big for most of the local riding around here. What's with the 6 inch rear rotor? | | Similar Products Used: | Giant AC1, Intense SLX, Brooklyn TMX | | Bike Setup: | 02' Specialized BigHit Comp, Marzocchi DJ1, Sun Single Track rims. | | Bottom Line: | If Mountain Creek opens up this year plan on seeing alot of white bikes in the woods. I don't need that much bike for regular riding, or do i need it for DH . BUT i must say that this bike kicks ass. Jumping is its speciality, and at 39lbs, it doesn't climb that bad. I was so surprised when i opened the box and saw the DJ1 on the frame. i really dont see that many frames out there better then this one. If you're a hardcore freerider, someone who hangs out at the local jump spot, or is just big and fat then this bike is for you. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
