    Date Reviewed: June 26, 2002
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
    Price Paid: $250.00
    Purchased At:local bike shop
Strengths:I have been using this thing almost every day for fourteen years, and have thrown everything at it that I could think of, including drops of up to four feet.
Weaknesses:The steel components, the rear hub that I destroyed about four years ago (and that was without bothering to lube it for the ten years prior, and using it in the rain, and leaving it outside), and the crank arms. I used to go through those like candy.
Similar Products Used:I have used a few rentals, complete with V-brakes and suspenion forks, and could not get comfortable on them. I also had a mountain bike that I bought way back in '85, but I cannot remember what brand it was; It got stolen a few months before I got my Shogun.
Bike Setup:Alivio brakes and crank, which my LBS gave to me for close to free, after selling me so many crank arms. Ritchey seat. Everythhing else is stock
Bottom Line:This bike is almost fifteen years old, and I have taken it everywhere with me. I put it through the worst abuse I could think of, stored it outside, year round, and it still works about as well as when it was new.

I am now upgrading all of the components, and that is only because rust is starting to show around the the rear frame triangle, and I may as well upgrade as long as I am getting the frame repainted.

Overall, if like me, you cannot get comfortable aboard the latest suspended wonder, at least for light fire trail riding, and you find that aluminum frames are not as smooth as old chromoly frames, then I do not know why you would bother with anything else at this price.

-Although, I should add, I am not completely insane. I plan to get a Specialized Hardrock Uno, so I can do some insane jumping, after I am done restoring my faithful friend, and retire it to light xc riding.
