No regrets they look pricey (cuz they are) while some say they are not was light as they could be they are still very light but that's not as important as the inverted nipple spoke design, which reduces the amount of force required to get them up to speed- this really works for climbing and accelerating. Of course the downside to that is that same lack of centrifigul force or inertia means you don't "carry" speed through transitions or coasting but since those instances are less intense for pedalling it's a good tradeoff. I don't have any noise problems, Shimano xtr discs with avid cable brakes. They are stiff but require truing and dent rather easily, but I wanted light and that was the compromise.

Bottom Line:
The last reviewer is correct about the noise problem, and part of the solution. The reason the noise occurs when you’re not braking in because the pads are still contacting the rotors. As stated use an anti-friction coating on the back of the pads, and take the glaze off the surface of the rotors. To do this just pick up some Rollocs and light resurface the both sides of the rotors. You will see dramatic improvement in braking performance and the noise.

those of you with howling brakes should not blame it on the rotors nor the calipers nor the wheelset. It is caused by friction and pads vibrating at a high speed. Ever run your finger over a crystal wine glass? It is the exact same concept. The fix: stop the vibration by removing brake pads and applying grease lightly to the back of the pads. Not the pads of course. If you dont have steady hands apply to the magnet on the piston. You dont need much. Smooth it around then reinstall pads and ride. Make sure no grease got on the pads and clean the rotor thoroughly. Go ride and ride hard!!!!!

Bottom Line:
Just got these wheels yesterday and thought I would get a real world weight out on the web. Front Wheel (no skewer): 721 gr, Skewer= 55gr Rear Wheel (no skewer): 847 gr, Skewer= 60gr TOTAL: 1568 gr. They are advertised as 1525 grams for the set, but a 43 gram difference isn't bad. In my experience, wheelsets are rarely as light as advertised. The valley in the rim is deeper than my Crossmax wheels and that makes it easier to mount tires on these wheels. Also, the rim on the XTR rims is about 1/16th of an inch wider (OD), than the 2002 Crossmax wheels, so Shimano didn't sacrifice tire stability by going to a narrow rim. I will repost after I get a few rides in on these. I will give 5 chilis for now, because of the build quality and light weight.

I've already submitted a review for these wheels. Everything I said previously still applies- noisy but fun and good lookin'.
I just wanted to post that for those of you who bought these wheels after November 2005 may have wheels that are part of a voluntary recall. Shimano hasn't put anything up on their US site, but you can find information on their European site here: http://cycle.shimano-eu.com/publish/content/cycle/seh/nl/en/news___info/voluntary_recall.html
Weaknesses:
Apparently the skewers on the front wheel can be a little bit "fail-y" so it's worth checking into.

See my previous review for my thoughts on performance, I just wanted to post the link to the voluntary recall since Shimano isn't mentioning it on their US Web site.

not that light actually for a racing wheelset (1650 grams for a racing wheel? come on shimano) that damned resonation sound, if its not happening when your not on the brakes, its happening when you are grapics come off to easy for a $850 price tag

Bottom Line:
I like these wheels sometimes, the rest of the time I absoultly hate them. I like them when they aren't making some kind of noise from the rotor (which is rare), and I hate them when there are (which is often). I was disapointed in the weight of the wheel, they may be a bit lighter than crossmax sl discs but are still a bit hefty for a racing wheel (the r in xtr stands for racing you know). there are lighter prebuilt wheels out there (bontrager race x light) than these, and they dont cost as much. I would recomend building up a wheelset with light hubs and rims of your choice with wheelsmith spokes (great spokes). It will be sigificantly lighter. But anyway, they are stiff side to side and thats nice and look good to. I would just have a hard time recomending these wheels to many people (even nonracers) b/c of the resonation problems (I even tried xt rotors and would still get noise). Look else where.

These wheels are light, surprisingly strong and they look really cool. These are great XC wheels but I think they'd be OK on trail bikes that don't have huge travel.
Weaknesses:
Even the XT rotors are noisy- I did my homework and avoided using the XTR rotors because of the screetching, but the XT's still make a lot of noise. I'm running Hayes brakes with Shimano rotors which might be the cause. I didn't go with the center-lock adapter by DT Swiss because it added extra $$ to the deal.

Bottom Line:
I got a great deal from WRC on these wheels because I bought last year's model in the dead of winter. I'm still a little stunned at the price. My value rating refers to the price I got, not the $850 MSRP.
I was half-expecting to put them on eBay after a couple rides and break even on the experiment but I'm keeping them. They're light, they're quick and they're plenty strong (I weigh a buck-fifty-something). I've ridden these babies hard at lower PSI than I'd ordinarily run and they've held up beautifully. They stay true.
I've seen a couple people suggest that you run these wheels with regular non-UST tires. I think that's asking for sidewall failure. UST tires have significantly stiffer sidewalls, which allow you to drain extra PSI and put more of the sidewall on the ground. While regular tires will work without tubes or rimstrips on these wheels, you should keep the PSI high and the sidewalls off the trail.

These are some good wheels. light and pretty stiff, so good climbing perfomance. the center lock may limit rotor choice but the rotors work well with most other non shimano brake systems (which shimano wants you to believe that you can only use shimano brakes with the rotors and wheels) i use hayes mag ti brakes with mine with no i'll effects. good bearings spin for a long time and the ti skewers are light and cool factor. as for the resonation, it dosent occur on all wheels (i've only heard of like 3 cases while working at a bike shop as a wrench), it occurs when you are not braking and is reallly freaking annoying. I tired switching pads and such and nothing helped, i read on here to try xt rotors, so i tried it and it worked. not sure why but, just get the xt rotors and save your self a possible headache (they are only like 6 grams a piece heavier than the xtr rotors with the same braking performance). oh and i run stans with regular tires with no problems on these rims and have had little problems with it (besides some tires not fitting right and my own stupidity and forgetting to air up my tires and thus running like 15 lbs of pressure and then bupring all the air out of my tire). a good set of wheels. although if you weigh more than 190 lbs, i'd stay away, they are stiff but not stiff enough.

They have taken some real abuse (just last weekend turning five laps on the 24 hours of Moab course) and stay true. The design is unique and engineered well. I use Stan's and run fairly low pressure and haven't run into any dents or other problems. I weight 170# and these wheels hold up great even when pushing my bike to the very edge of its capabilities. They are a lot of money, but for a true hard core racer who is very gram conscious, this might be your next wheelset. My only concern is what happens if I break a spoke in a small town on a road trip (because they don't use normal spokes), so I guess I should get some spares, but to date, it hasn't happened.

In the one year that I've been running these wheels not ONCE have I even touched them with the included spoke wrench. Thats a testament to their durability.
The performance is second to none as well. The UST compatibility is a nice feature as well. Until recently, I have been running regular tubes & standard tires, but recently converted over to tubeless. Its nice to have wheels that work equally well with both setups.
I have experienced a few rare instances of disc brake howl when the bike was new, but after everything broke in that no longer occured.
Bottom line....I highly reccommend these above any other wheel available for any high-end bike conneseur (as long as you already have or don't mind using Shimano's excellent Center Lock brake system)
