    Date Reviewed: June 8, 2008
    Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:Strong as hell, gets weird looks from the shop folk, lightweight, very unique looking.
    Weaknesses:None
Bike Setup:Cannondale '06 Furio-x frame, Magura Louise BAT, Maxxis, Bontrager, Ultra Headshok, RaceFace
Bottom Line:Came on a bike I recently purchased. Bought whole bike in as-new condition for $550! Came with top of the line stuff including these wheels. Went tubeless and these wheels are amazing. I am 5'8" 145 lbs and ride what I call "crash-riding"; urban night-assault. I hit everything I can find with these rims and the are still like new. Like all truly great parts, you simply put these on your bike and forget about them.

    Duration Product Used:3 months
    Price Paid: $400.00
    Purchased At:Bike Home, Shanghai
Strengths:Value for money, good looks, tuff as nails and spins for days.
    Weaknesses:non so far.
    Similar Products Used:Mavic CrossMax
Bike Setup:05 NRS, Reba, Fox float, FSA After Burner MegoExo, 03 XTR components, Saint Disc brakes, Thomson X4 stem and masterpiece post,....etc.
Bottom Line:It's the budget wheelset to go! Cheaper then XTR and tougher too...I do regular jumps and drops (around 2 to 3 feet and yeah...on the NRS and bottoms out the fox) and the wheels stay true. It's quite an attention getter with the lateral pull spokes, folks would stop and wonder how it's laced together. Anyway, it's quite an amazing wheelset for the price you pay. Who should buy it? A betweener of cross country rider and folks like me who does jumps and drops....at a moderate height, of course.

    Duration Product Used:1 Year
    Price Paid: $400.00
    Purchased At:jensonusa.com
Strengths:Stiff, light and stayed true, until...
Weaknesses:Not good for misjudging gap jumps! No problems for a year, then came up short on a gap and hit the rear wheel hard on a sharp edged rock. I didn't know it until I was lubing the chain that I noticed a wobble. Yikes! 130 lb chick caused a half a nicked sized dent in the rim.
    Similar Products Used:Mavic 221/XT, Mavic 517/XT, Tioga Racer/Edco
Bike Setup:Intense 5.5, Marzocchi Marathon SL120, Mg60 stem, Monkeylite riser, Progressive 5th Element Air CVT, 2005 XTR gruppo-disc, Thomson seatpost, Specialized Rival
Bottom Line:This was the best wheelset I had until the dent. No truing was done until then and I've put a lot of harsh miles on these. They've gone through lots of rock gardens in the Mt Wilson area, the Santa Ana Mountains and the San Juan trail. Regardless, I'll continue to train with these, since,I was able to get it pretty true and the seal with the tire wasn't compromised. I can't feel the difference riding with the dent, anyway.

on rim due to the laterally traction design of spokes.
    Bike Setup:xc tail 7005,shimano xt/xtr group,manitou skareb comp

    Date Reviewed: May 21, 2005
    Duration Product Used:3 months
    Purchased At:LBS
    Strengths:Strong, looks, weight, UST compatible
Weaknesses:None, except perhaps you have to run Shimano brakes, but this doesn't phase me, I use the Shimano XT hydros.
Similar Products Used:Mavic 717 disc with XT hubs, mavic 223 etc
Bike Setup:Salsa Caballero, Chris King, Thomson, Kenda, SRAM XO rear, XTR front, XT brakes etc
Bottom Line:Looks awesome, not many around, stays true, takes a beating, very light weight, can run UST tyres. I run non ust tires with Stan's sealant and it works a treat. Although I have gone to SRAM drivetrain, I still love the Shimano wheels!! These rock, and much cheaper than XTR!!! :)

    Favorite Trail:Any local
    Duration Product Used:1 Year
    Price Paid: $400.00
    Purchased At:Ebay New
Strengths:Strong as hell, easy to clean, never needs truing and spokes never break. Small branches have no effect on them
Weaknesses:Some howling as mentioned in previous post when used with Hayes disc brakes. I put on the old SRAM discs brakes and it went away, stange, isn't it?

You will have to buy the center lock rotors ($100), these are not bolt on.
Similar Products Used:Prior generation of Shimano wheelsets
Bike Setup:Typical cross county Trek Liquid
Bottom Line:I have used the Shimano wheelsets exclusively for the past 3 years and never had any problems. Previously I would always ride normal spoked wheels and then fatigue would set in and I could never keep them trued up. If you are a low end clyde like me at 200lbs, you can ride these things for years and never touch the spokes...

    100% endorsement from me

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
    Price Paid: $500.00
    Purchased At:Online shop
    Strengths:Light, Strong, Good looks, UST
    Weaknesses:none so far
    Similar Products Used:Mavic
Bike Setup:Hardtail, Continental tires, Shimano XT, Magura Louise Disc
Bottom Line:Bought them because Mavic XM819 was out of stock! I am very surprised how well this wheelset does! I did some tough downhills and even some flight of 40 stairs, and it seems to be solid as a rock. And the looks are just fantastic! But - please - don't get one, because it still is very rare, and thats cool, too .....

    Date Reviewed: July 20, 2004
    Duration Product Used:3 months
    Price Paid: $400.00
    Purchased At:online
    Strengths:Looks, Tubeless, Disc specific.
    Weaknesses:Weight, Weak rear hub, price.
Similar Products Used:Mavic CrossMax UST, XTR disc w/Mavic 317, Rolf, Sun-Ringle.
Bike Setup:'03 Rocky ETSX-70, Full XTR disc and drivetrain except CrossMax wheels, Easton carbon bar and post, Easton EC70 stem, Fox Vanilla fork
Bottom Line:I was very disappointed with this wheel set. No issues with the front but the rear has a deathly howl that emits from the disc rotor after hard tension is applied from the pedaling forces. Only happens after chain tension is released and I coast for a few feet. I thought it was the bike I first tried them on but after moving them over to the Rocky it started howling again. I've heard of this with the XTR wheels but all the Mags. said the XT set was better than the XTR because they didn't suffer from the ghost howl. Hopefully sending them in for service will reveal the problem. It's a shame that such nice wheels are crap.

Duration Product Used:Tested or demo'ed only
    Price Paid: $400.00
Strengths:Lighter than Mavic (except Xmax SL; XT just heavier nearly 200g, however it cost less $200), smooth, rainbow sticker & very close to XTR. The hubs is very smooth.
Weaknesses:TI material not included like XTR. However cost is cheaper than XTR.
    Similar Products Used:XTR, Xmax SL.
Bike Setup:Yeti AS-X, DeeMax & Boxxer. Giant XTC team, XT wheelset & Manitou Skareb Platium.
Bottom Line:I like it because the stroke is fewer than popular.
