The proven 970 pedal was already legendary. Now Shimano has tricked it out, and for the first time, their best MTB pedal carries the XTR label. Same basic design as before, but now saves about 2 ounces over the old design (for rotating weight, that's huge!)

These are the pedals for the hardest of hard core XC and trail riders. They are built to last. You put them on and forget about them. They are not the lightest pedal out there but from my experience you pay a price in durability for anything lighter. Mud clearing is very good with the open design but is not as good as the egg beaters/Time. The pedal to shoe interface does not groove out the sole of your shoe like Time and Egg beater.
Very high quality and well engineered. They are expensive but worth every penny and then some if you ride a lot.

Spring tension bolt which on the 970's has been reduced to a 2 or 2.5mm allen key from a larger size on the 959s and other SPDs strips very easily at the tool interface once you start to tighten them up half way even when they were lubed up with penetrating oil. So if they are getting loose on you be really careful, use a HQ new allen key and soak the part.

Bottom Line:
These pedals are great if you like the solid engagement mechanism of previous Shimano pedals. Their performance is largely unaffected by mud-- unlike earlier shimano pedals. These pedals are also much easier on carbon soled shoes when compared with egg beaters and time pedals. Sure you can use a shoe shield with the Egg beaters, but on my shoes, there was a significant amount of play between the pedal and shoe with these installed. Over all, I prefer the more pronounced retention system to the more buttery operation of Times & Egg beaters.

I haven't opened them up yet, but I consider loose ball bearings a weakness. I don't want to mess with them. I'd rather just replace a cartridge bearing like you do with a Crank Bro's pedal. Not a big deal, but the finish wears off quickly.

Bottom Line:
I had a hard time choosing between the Candy SL's and these XTR's. I really like the design of the Candies from a mechanical point of view and they are lighter weight, but I think the XTR's are more durable. However, what really tipped the scales to the XTR is the slightly smaller angle required to exit the pedal. It's only a subtle difference, but in panic get-offs or biffs I think the XTR is actually easier to exit. I also like how there's a firm feel as you bump up against the clip(?) so you know when you're about to clip out. With the Crank Bro's it's sort of a vague point where you can't quite tell when you're about to clip out. Finally, I think that the Crank Bro's pedals feel too "skatey" or slippery like you're standing on ball bearings... it's worse when your shoe is wet. The XTR's feel the same, wet or dry. I like the more consistent feeling.

Very impressive pedals that are fantastic when it comes to clipping in or out. So i went to per___m___e bike shop, and saw xtr pedals on sale! got me them bad boys. i hooked it up and tested it, it was BLISS!!! GO GET A PAIR OF XTR PEDALS, you won't regret it! it clipped in effortlessly. i didn't have to stop and think, ok find the front bar (go forward), and press down. HERE, i just go CLIP IN! wow, life is so much easier now! i want to present a neutral point of view, but wow, life is so much better with shimano XTRs. Dunno how the crank bros. aficianados say how it is so easy to clip in, I SAY, "BUNCH OF BULL!" take in from me, i like the best equipment for my bike, but crank bros. don't cut it for me. Bottom Line:
These pedals are the first ones I feel confident will last me a while. For some reason, I eat up pedals like a riding ten times as much as I do. I have gone through four or five sets of pedals in the past two years. I finally decided to buy the best Shimano I could instead of "trying something better" on the advice of my bike shop guy. I'll post an update after this season and they've seen some abuse. Like the others said, they are very easy to get into and out of and the adjustable tension is nice.

Bottom Line:
Best pedals on the market for everything except possibly the most hardcore of riders out there. They're light, they work flawlessly, and are made really well. Spend a few more pennies and GET THESE PEDALS.

Strengths:
Very solid feel of being clipped - easy exit and entry - sturdy - clears mud very well
Weaknesses:
heavier than what I was used too (Frogs)
Similar Products Used:
speedplay frogs, egg beaters
Bike Setup:
Maverick ML7, Turner Nitrous
Bottom Line:
I am really happy with these pedals. For the first time in along time I feel solidly clipped in and I am thrilled at the mud clearance. Ez entry and exit as well. A little heavier than some other pedals, but well worth the trade off. Just a rock solid pedal.

Sturdy, easy to click into and out of

Bottom Line:
These pedals are easy to snap into and easy to get out of. I have bashed these hard on large rocks that would have crushed the metal bars on the Crank Brothers egg beaters and no dents! I never worry about clicking out accidently either. I just raced a 20 mile Sport Class race and not one problem, put them on your bike and forget about them.

Strengths:
This pedal is great, very quick and easily to get out of. Strong and stiff. Was able to stop biking and then clip out. Something I was not able to do with other pedals. With others I had to unclip way beforehand so that I didn't fall. Not with the M970. Adjustable spring and multi release cleats available.
Weaknesses:
The bluish color rubs of easily, even on the first ride. I did not have this problem with the m-959 or eggbeaters, but then again they did not have any type of coloring on it like this one.
Similar Products Used:
shimano PD M-959 and Eggbeaters.
Bike Setup:
2006 Specialized stumpjumper FSR.
Bottom Line:
This is a great pedal specially for those that are afraid of not being able to clip out in time, this is the pedal for you. Extremely easy to clip in also. More easier to use than the PD M-959, and lighter too. Well worth the money.
