Favorite Trail:Woodpecker @ Masabesic
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $100.00
Purchased At:Tri-City Bicycle
Strengths:These things take a beating and ask for more.
Weaknesses:Have not found one yet.
Similar Products Used:Wellgo, other shimanos and something cheap that lasted 2 rides.
Bike Setup:2009 Pitch Pro all stock except the pedals and some scratches and dings.
Bottom Line:It seems I may have paid a little more than most, but I'm good with that, my LBS has to make a living too. The thing I love about the 545's is that they eat rocks, the rocks don't eat them.

Strengths:Combination of the cage and the clip make them very versatile. Good bearings and pin.
Weaknesses:Outer cage mounting fragile.
Similar Products Used:Bontraeger flats
Bike Setup:Scott Genius with XT throughout. Previously on a Specialised Stumpjumper Comp.
Bottom Line:Switching from hardtail to dual and from flats to clipless at the same time wasn't a good idea, but these pedals did make it easier - allowing me to clip out on more difficult sections to give me the security of being able to put a foot down in an emergency, yet still having a good platform to push against. My only gripe is that after a couple of hard knocks on rock, the outer cage mounting fell off on both pedals. They still work but the cages now flap around more than I'd like and are putting strain/wear on the inner mounting.

Date Reviewed: July 4, 2009
Favorite Trail:Island Line, Burlington, VT
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $77.00
Purchased At:eBay
Strengths:Solid bearings, stiff, decent support from the aluminum cage, adjustable cleat tension, super easy to get out of when needed
Weaknesses:Heavy, very heavy. Worthless when using regular, cleatless shoes.
Similar Products Used:Bontrager Big Earl platform pedals, generic department store pedals
Bike Setup:'06 Kona Hoss, lots of upgrades
Bottom Line:I'm 6'1", 260 pounds, and I like to pedal HARD. I went through generic pedals on a monthly basis. When I got sick of spending money on cheap pedals every month, I invested in some Bontrager Big Earl platform pedals instead. Those lasted me over 3 years, and are still as good as new. But I wanted to upgrade to clipless pedals, so the search began for a good set that I wouldn't wear through in a month.

I bought these M545's brand new on eBay for a decent price. Amazingly, they're even heavier than my old Big Earl platform pedals, which I originally bought for their burliness and huge bearings. The aluminum cage seems to add a LOT of heft. IANAWW (I am not a weight weenie), but I have to admit that these things have a noticeable heft.

For my first ride with these pedals, I didn't have my new cycling shoes yet, so I went with my regular shoes. The whole ride was a painful nightmare. I ended up with a sore left foot for a week. The mechanism that grabs the cleats sits higher than the aluminum cage, even when it pivots, so my shoes were constantly slipping around. There was absolutely no support. Every bump, every gear shift, every sharp turn would cause my feet to shift around. It was unbearable. I did about 50 miles like this, and I could barely walk when I was finally done.

For the next ride, the shoes I ordered (Lake MX165) were finally delivered, so I finally got to try the pedals as they were intended. It took about 3 miles to figure out where I wanted the cleats positioned, but once they were in place. I was pedaling more efficiently than I ever had before. I can maintain a much higher cadence and travel much faster without expending as much energy as before.

The pedals hold me in VERY securely, I can leap over obstacles with ease and the pedals never let go. I've been able to pull the bike over a foot into the air just with my legs. Even when I'm traveling at 25+ mph and my feet feel like they should be flying off the pedals, everything stays incredibly secure. My feet are always very comfortable, I can go countless miles without any soreness.

As for stepping out, I almost fell the first time I tried. These are my first clipless pedals, and I forgot to practice stepping out before going riding. But in a panic (as the bike was tipping over in front of over a hundred strangers having a company picnic), I was able to step out and keep myself upright. After that, a bit of practicing had me used to the proper motion in no time. Now I step out with ease without even thinking about it, and I've had no trouble getting out in emergency situations. I didn't even need to adjust the cleat tension on the pedals. Even better, I've never stepped out without meaning to.

And finally, the most important aspect, the bearings appear to be surviving my weight and leg strength just fine. The shafts look like they're about the same size as my old Big Earl pedals. After 3 hard months of biking, there's no noticeable clicking or looseness.

I'm very happy with this purchase. Since I paid about the same for these as my previous Big Earl pedals, I'm giving them a solid 5 flaming chilis for value. As for the overall rating, I'm removing one flaming chili because they're practically worthless with regular, non-cleated shoes, and they weigh a ton. Everything else is perfect.

Strengths:Strong, takes a beating, easy clip in and out, like having the platform for when I don't want to be clipped in.
Weaknesses:NONE
Bike Setup:Cannondale Jekyll and my old Schwinn Moab.
Bottom Line:If you ride in very rocky areas this pedal will take the hits. I have been using this model for over 7 years with only recently wearing a set out. Also like the fact that I can un-clip in nasty sections and still ride through without feeling like I'm stuck on the bike. Excellent pedals for the money will buy again. I rate a full 5 for outstanding durability and value.

Bottom Line:Great pedal for the $$$.
Not the lightest but, takes alot of abuse and large enough platform to ride with street shoes. I have been really impressed with these pedals for over 5 years and have not had one issue with them what so ever.

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $45.00
Purchased At:Local Bike Shop
Strengths:Heavy duty; bomb proof (banged these on rocks a number of times and they're still okay); consistent clip-in and clip-out, if you've been using these for some time, clipping-in and clipping-out becomes almost second nature; virtually maintenance-free; wide cage is a plus if you don't wan't to clip in.
Weaknesses:Weight; Cage spring of my right pedal broke on the first year; SPD logo on the cap assembly disappeared on both pedals within the first year
Similar Products Used:VP-101 Clipless SPD compatible; Shimano PD-M520
Bike Setup:KHS XC-604, Manitou Front (Minute 2:00) and Rear Suspension (Swinger 3); 2008 XT groupset; Thomson stem and seatpost; Race Face Next XC low rise bars; Mavic Wheels with Maxxis tires; Chris King Headset; WTB Rocket V Race saddle
Bottom Line:This is the only remaining component from my original bike which I built in 2003. It actually looked out of place when I upgraded to an FS frame in 2006 and upgraded my group set to 08 XTs last December 2007 because the pedals were already old. So what? They were still working fine. My only woe is that the cage spring on the right pedal broke within the first year of ownership, thus, the pop-up binding mechanism wasn't working anymore. But lo and behold, I can still clip in properly even if the binding mechanism doesn't pop out anymore, which actually led me not to bother claiming warranty on it. This also led me to believe that the pop-up feature is something “good to have” but not really necessary. I have taken these things to sandy rides, muddy rides, river crossings, wet and rainy rides; plus I wash my bike after each of these rides; and it held up perfectly well against the elements and moisture. I opened these up back in 2006 to clean the internals and re-grease the bearings, but I haven’t had any major problems with it. Unfortunately during the ride last weekend, the right pedal was grinding quite consistently, but I was still able to finish the ride with no problems. I opened it up again yesterday only to bring some of the bearings on the right pedal already broke and the bearing race’s lip already cracked. Oh well, all good things must come to an end I guess, these things served me well for the past 5 years! =) Now I need to replace my pedals now and I’m going to get the same pair again (unless I get a better deal on the XT pedals which is significantly lighter). If you are a weight weenie racer, these are not for you. But if you are an avid mountain bike rider who doesn’t mind the additional 200+ grams weight and you are looking for good quality pedals that’ll last you a long, long time, get yourself a pair.

Weaknesses:Heavy, end piece on one pedal has come off several times on two different sets.
Similar Products Used:shimano 647
Bike Setup:Bullit
Bottom Line:Great pedal when it works but doesn't last very long. There is a screw in part along axle that is not reverse threaded so it eventually falls out on the trail and you are left with a wobbly pedal. I've gotten the replacement part from shimano several times for two sets of pedals and within a month or two it is missing again. Now I have the 647 model and haven't had a problem in over a year. Not for the xc rider that is worried about weight. I ride up everything that I come down and I highly suggest the 647 for anyone that comes down technical trails hard and fast.

Bike Setup:Canondale Killer-V hardtail, xt adn sram x-9's, marzocchi marathon, Dave Thomas wheelset. Just put them on a new santa cruz superlight too.
Bottom Line:My riding partners and I use this pedal exlusively. We ride pure northeastern xc, don't race, and feel much more secure having a platform in technical conditions for when your foot is out and you suddenly have to climb, having just rolled a log, etc. Between us thats 5 bikes all with this pedal. We'd love to find a lighter one with the same durablity and function, but there isn't one. Anyone riding tricky single track NOT using the Shimano multi release cleat ought to grab a set for $20. They hold you when you pedal, the let you go with almost any kind of yank. Great combo with the 545's. 4 and 4 on the ratings, dedicting a little for price and weight.

Strengths:Clipless with a solid platform ( and double sided too ). When you need to dab in a panic you have something to getback onto quickly, and then getting clipped back in follows seamlessly.
Weaknesses:Right pedal: cage outside edge bushing/nut and pop up spring disappeared. In doing research to find the part, I find out this is rather common. It seems that it is not reverse thread, so if it comes loose, it'll be gone. The upside is was easy to get the part, it cost just a coupla bucks, easy to replace, and with locktite, no further problems.
Similar Products Used:Clipless without cages: Shimano 747 ( fantastic ), Wellgo ( crap ).
Bike Setup:Specialized Enduro
Bottom Line:I ride in muddy conditions 8 months of the year, and have no issues that others refer to as poor perf in mud. As you jam the pedal into a log to climb up and over it, on the underside of the pedal, the front toe clip part of the clip gets jammed with wood , and even with this jammed with cedar, they clip in, and release reliably.

Strengths:Easiest pedal i've used. The pedal is double sided and spring loaded it pops up above the cage. As soon as you put your foot on it the pedal finds your cleat. It's just that easy. The aluminum cage is great for if you have to go through something unclipped or if you have to get going from a stand still on a up hill. Wail clipped in it gives your foot some side to side play, giving your knees some flexability wail pedaling. Tuff set of pedals they take a good beating. Two thumbs up!!
Weaknesses:if you're one of those people that like to count grams then you may have a problem with this pedal. Their almost twice the weight of other pedals. Sitting at 567grams, but remember this difference is only half a pound. Can you feel the diffrence of half a pound on your bike. I can't.

Just like any other set of pedals remember to have the cleats on your shoes a tight as possible. Strengths:The platforms provide some leverage when trying to clip in uphill. Fairly sturdy.
Weaknesses:Dangerous in rough sections. Releases when you least want or expect. Don't even bother with these if you ride in mud, expensive.
Similar Products Used:Crank Bros Mallet c

Bottom Line:I can't believe I used these suicidal pedals for almost 2 years! The only god thing I can say about them is the meager platform allowed me some leverage to clipin on an incline. If you ride in mud I guarantee they won't work. If you ride some technical trails and like a bit of hucking and DH stay away from these - they unclip in the worst situations and I have the scars to prove it. I tried adjusting the tension, positioning the cleats and they still suck. After reading reviews for the Mallet C's I took a chance and I'll never use SPD's again EVER!!!

Strengths:Big platform, easy to get in and out of, takes lots of abuse. I've had these for a couple of years and I love them. I have tried egg beaters, but these are much better for me. I am puzzled by people complaining about riding these pedals in just regular shoes without clips. Did you know those funny lookin' things sticking up in the middle of the pedal are the clip in's for your shoes? Don't be stupid, you CAN ride them w/regular shoes, but thats not what they're made for. These pedals let me move my foot around and get in and out quick and let me just stomp my foot down without being clipped in without worrying about missing the pedal. I ride in lots of rocks and lots of mud and these things are great. Never any problems at all, of course I am a bike maintenance freak and that prolly has a lot to do with it. The cage is one piece and that helps.
Weaknesses:None really that I can think of.

Bottom Line:Good clipless pedals for a first timer. Very adjustable easy to get out of and if you can't quite clip in, they have a nice fat pedal you can stomp on. Strengths:Light weight for a platform style peddle and easy to slap your foot onto when in tough situations like a steep rutty uphill or a slippery incline.
Weaknesses:The platform aspect makes the pedal heavier than the pure clippless pedals, but I don't need anymore scaps on the side of my foot bone. The pedals do tend to wear out after a year of serious riding, so they are not extremely durable.
Similar Products Used:Shimano 747, Shimano 636
Bike Setup:Marin Mt. Vision (semi) Pro with a swapped out fox shock to a Cane Creek shock which lasts longer and is rebuildable.
Bottom Line:This is my second set of pedals, I lvoe them!!! I ride in areas with a lot of tricky uphills where you are frequently having to hop logs and negotiate ruts so you are constantly getting knocked off your bike or slipping to a stop. These pedals allow you to slap the pedal and go even when you miss the cleat when you are starting on a steep upgrade.

Even though, they do wear out fast I give them five hot-che-mama's because you can't have light and duralble at the same time.

Bottom Line:The key feature of these pedals is that they offer you a fairly decent surface to stand on/pedal when you can't or don't want to clip in. This makes them great for rough terrain when you get knocked out but don't have the time to clip back in, or can't because you've got a chunk of the last log you went over stuck in the pedal. You can ride your bike in sneakers fairly easily, though the center of the pedal sticks up a bit, so you can practice wheelies in the driveway with no problem. The outer cage also takes some of the abuse from rocks so inner pedal doesn't.
That said, these are NOT platform and clipless pedals in one. They don't have the big flat surface area of a platform or the sticktion you get from pins. The only complaint I have about them is the durability of the outer bearing for the cage. The bearing has plastic parts and I've smashed it apart on the right pedal of both sets I've owned. Since it's the people riding difficult technical terrain that will most appreciate these pedals, you'd think they'd make them tougher.

Strengths:Real estate! Platform gives you plenty of space to recover and in that area space = time. More space you have the more time you have to get adjusted. Having two sides helps as well.

I have had these pedals for nearly 3 seasons and have no major issues with them. In my book, that means they are durable.
Weaknesses:Mud can be bad with these pedals but we are talking lots of mud. The only problem I had with mud is trying to clip into a side that was covered completely in mud. If you can stay clipped in while mudding then you won't have any major issues. And if you clean them well and spray some dry lube on them everytime you do the rest of the bike, it helps alot. Dirty bike parts never perform well. If you want proof, cover your entire bike in mud and then go riding.

The size of the pedals does have a drawback; bigger pedals will hurt your legs more if they hit them.
Similar Products Used:N/A
Bike Setup:Trek 6500, mostly stock except the grips, the saddle and the tires

I like to ride with the tension fairly loose on these pedals. I like being able to pop out at a moments notice and have a bit of flexability while locked in.
Bottom Line:These are good pedals. The extra room is great and I wouldn't give it up for a smaller pedal. I have gotten lots of use out of them and I would probably get another set if they broke on my next ride.

If you ride them with out your shoes, like to the store, then yes, they are terrible pedals. These pedals are for mountain bikes. Buy a green machine if momma wants you to go get a loaf of bread, a container of milk and a stick of butta and make sure they have flat pedals. :)

I got these pedals as part of the deal I made on my bike--so they were bascially freebies. I probably would not spend more than $40 on them.

Strengths:They didn't break when they hit the ground and threw me off my bike. They are truly very solid.
Weaknesses:Platform is pretty much useless. If you try without your cleats for a run to the store or something, the bindings will dig into the soles of your feet making it very difficult to pedal. Also, you lose clearance with these.

Similar Products Used:Platforms only.
Bike Setup:1997 GT Outback, Al frame, Mixed XT and Deore drive, terrible RST fork, awful WTB saddle, etc.
Bottom Line:These pedals are perfect if you're scared of going clipless; they are great even if you're not. You can clip out, reposition your foot a little, and ride platform any time you might need to dab or bail; this means you can push your limits farther and still have time to save your ass.

I've muddied them up often enough, never any trouble. I also hose them out after a very muddy ride, and then spray some lube in. Maybe this is why they always function perfectly for me.

Once they were broken in, entry and release became very easy.

Steep/technical down/uphill, over the log, through the rocks, unclipped. Easier hills/logs/blahblahblah, clipped.

Realistic people, people who like fun, and people who don't like getting hurt should put these pedals on their mountain bikes if they actually do real mountain biking. Anybody else (unrealistic, un-fun, masochists, and road/bike-path/neatly-cut-hardpack bikers) would probably be happier with Egg Beaters.

Similar Products Used:time and other SPD's.
Bike Setup:rigid SS
Bottom Line:got these pedals because i need to ride the bike around w/o cycling shoes. they were not too bad with sneakers but will make you suffer on long distances.

ok back to mtbing. if not clipped in they provide some extra slip insurance and you get this sure-footed confidence. but once you clip in, they are just like other shimano SPD's: crank up the spring tension and they are a bit hard to clip into, crank down a bit and your shoes have tendency to pull out on climbs or bumpy downhill. (once you clip in,) you don't get the kind of support from TIME, instead it's a small contact patch. and they suck in mud and ice. they won't clip in easily, and you gotta twist hard to get out. depending on the type of your shoes, the cage might have a bit of interference with them. not a real weakness, but something to look out for.

so: since i don't care about weight, i'd say 545's are better than most other non-caged 535 clones. but all weaknesses are still present.

bottom line: try time z before you fall back on these.

Similar Products Used:Platforms only, these are my first clipless pedals
Bike Setup:Diamondback hardtail with many scratches.
Bottom Line:These pedals have survived some serious knocks over the last couple of years and have come out shining - the scratches just make 'em look better, in a Mad Max kinda way! I wear Cannondale hike-a-bike kinda shoes, you know the ones that you can wear to the pub without anyone looking at you funny, or you can take them camping and they are quite comfortable to walk all day in. These shoes have a flexier sole than flat out racing shoes, in the interests of walking comfort. I feel that the alloy platform on this pedal provides this flexier type of shoe with a little extra support. Also, I can alter my shoe position on the pedals to ride unclipped - great for practising manuals etc.

Overall - I like them! I would probably buy the same ones if I had to replace them.

These pedals are awsome. I once thought I would " upgrade " to the Shimano 858s. After I had gone through the full range of tension adjustments on those I realize they were " Death traps " and went back to my trusty 545s.
These pedals are also great if you have big feet like me. Some of you with big flippers might have noticed, that the bigger the shoe, the more the cleat ends up towards the inside of the shoe, causing your feet to end up angled down toward the out side of a regular xc. pedal. This is uncomfortable for me ( Leading to sore little toes ).
The big platform keeps those large feet level, is easier to find and makes for a firm surface while the cleat finds the mechanism. These pedals are also great for people that like soft soled riding shoes.
Unlike down-hill pedals they don't lock you in with teeth.
Last but not least is 545s have more float than most pedals,I for one, like to move my feet around a little, while I'm riding.

They work great in mud, sand, and river-clay (don't ask).

They are a huge target for your foot.
Weaknesses:Size? Weight? These are not small or light. My advice? Get a carbon bar and seatpost to make up the difference, and where it counts most use heavier products. But then again, this is the guy with the Rhyno Lite rims. Same idea.

These pedals are it for me. Should they break (hah) I would replace them. They are bullet proof tanks, that stay rock solid on your shoe when you need them, and with the lightest intentional twist release every time. Furthermore, the huge toothy pedal lets you stomp on it without being clipped in when you need to save your neck. That happens often on a Mantra.

These pedals and Marzocchi bomber shocks get my MVP rating. They are ridiculously underpriced for what they do. They save your neck when you need them the most.

Bike Setup:raleigh easton frame, marz bomber, precision rear der., xtr cassette, race face cranks, selle flite gel (a great chair)etc ......
Bottom Line:I like having big pedal platform, sometimes things get hairy and you just need a place to stomp your foot quickly until you can clip. I originally had a pair of Performance MTB shoes, they are good shoes. Then Performance had a great sale on some Lake's so I bought them. Due to the sole design/cleat area attach, for some reason I get in/out much easier than withe my Performance. Because of this I took these to Moab last year and they worked great for everything.

Today in IL I went through as much mud/water/swamp as you can go through, it was like riding through the thickest chocolate frosting you could imagine. I have always heard that Shimano pedals are not good in the mud (Time and Eggs the best?). I didn't have to dismount much, but my cleats did get some mud trapped and I had zero problems throughout the day with mud regarding in/out.

As much as I would like to try the Eggs, my mind says why leave a pedal that has served me well.

Bottom Line:These pedals are worth the money. I've only ridden with them three times but i love them already. I was a little worried about getting in and out but i learned how very quickly. Wouldn't trade them for anything. It is worth the extra $ to get the ones with the cage because it feels better and there are times when you dont want to be clipped in.

Price Paid: $56.00
Purchased At:performance bike or supergo or some internet retailer
Strengths:reliable, strong, durable, easy to get into and out of
Weaknesses:heavy, any kind of moisture on the bottom of your non-clipless shoe will leave you sliding everywhere, because the "spikes" aren't grippy enough.
Similar Products Used:icons, nashbars
Bike Setup:99 Trek 7000 with rolf satelittes and a manitou mars C
Bottom Line:i like these pedals a lot. weight is not a huge issue with me, but if it is for you, look elsewhere. i like how the platform guides my foot into the clip, and how they can take a major beating. the spikes that give your casual shoes grip when not using the clip are too round, and therefore don't inspire too much confidence. i am thinking of taking a drummel to them to put more of an edge on the spikes. i am very satisfied.

Bottom Line:Pedals are super easy to use, these were my first spd pedals and they made it very easy to get used to being clipped in. I highly recommend these to anyone who is contemplating clipless pedals or has a hard time with uncaged spd pedals. Those who are worried about weight should find a different pedal. The cages work great for just riding around without being clipped in too.

Strengths:Its a solid product that works. This pedal isnt gonna break on you, and it looks really cool to!
Weaknesses:When they get wet they become really slippery if your using ordinary shoes and not spd, so if your living in Sweden, like me, and your'e planning to ride without spd, look for something else! The problem is that the spd clip-in-thing, in the middle, sticks out so much that your shoe wont be in contact with all of the spikes on the edge of the pedals.

Bike Setup:A pretty good trek frame with a mantou fork(suspended), a couple of teally expensive parts that a friend of mine is lending me (he works in a bikeshop). V-brakes, etc...

Strengths:Easy in, Easy out. Also has "meat" in that it is almost a combination clipless and platform pedal. The platform part allows you to jump back on your bike in the middle of an incline and churn away until you find the clips. Also easy to adjust.
Weaknesses:Heavy, if you're a gram counter.
Bike Setup:Cannondale Super V
Bottom Line:Good Pedal, especially because it has some platform area to it. Good first clipless pedal.

Bottom Line:
These Pedal are great. Effortless entry and exit. The tension bolts are set really tight out of the box, but once this was sorted out clipping in was a piece of cake. Look good as well. Get them. Get them now. I will never use another type of pedal again. Weight weenies may not like the 560g but phuck them.
