The pedals just keep on going. I have a new bike on the way and have been looking at the reviews of the new SPD pedals so that my bike is 100% new. There is all this talk of broken spindles, broken springs, feet popping out under load, springs getting weak as time goes on - - - all the while my 737s just keep on going. I'm getting more and more sure that my 737s will be going on my new bike! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$120.00 | | Purchased At: | 1992 or 1993 | | Strengths: | unbreakable, no need for special maintenance | | Weaknesses: | not very good in heavy mud | | Similar Products Used: | nothing - since my 737's are still working :-) | | Bike Setup: | GT Karakoram Elite (92); XT; Mag21 | | Bottom Line: | Interesting to see people still writing reviews on a pedal system from the last century .... I really like this pedal system. It is easy to use and it looks like that "we" still have some more years in front of us ...

$100.00 | | Purchased At: | USA | | Strengths: | Last forever | | Weaknesses: | bit heavy but hey! Not good in mud | | Bottom Line: | I bought these in 1990 and 16 years later they are still my main and favorite pedal. I have had them on about 6 MTB's, 2 or 3 road bikes and they are still going strong. Overhauled them about a decade ago haven't touched them since. I want them to last forever, until I stop riding when I am 60 or something. I admit I rarely ride them in the wet and when they get caked in mud and sand they aren't great but I don't think many pedals are. I'm sentimental about them too. I have to give them 5/5, any product that lasts 16 years of regular riding has to be good. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from Yakima, WA, USA Date Reviewed: August 9, 2002 | | Duration Product Used: | More than 3 years | | Purchased At: | Local Shop | | Strengths: | Bombproof!! Solid construction and ease of entry/exit | | Weaknesses: | Weight, hard to clean | | Similar Products Used: | Shimano PD-M747, Speedplay Frog | | Bike Setup: | 1992 Trek 9500, Full XTR - first generation M900 series!! | | Bottom Line: | I'm feeling a bit nostalgic tonight since I just bought a pair of these on eBay to replace my original pair which were stolen in '97. Got totally ripped off... The guy promised me a pair of BRAND new 737s and sure enough the ones I receive look like they've had a grinder taken to them. The bearings are totally SHOT too - with enough play to slide a quarter between the spindle and the pedal body. Nevertheless, I LOVE these pedals - I was born and raised on these things and the entry/exit is the easiest I've ever experienced. I'm currently riding on Speedplay Frogs and after a few weeks of riding I still find myself looking down to make sure I'm lining my foot up right to enter. Never had to do that with the 737s! A bit on the heavy side, but hey, they're from the early 90's! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Currently: nostalgia. | | Weaknesses: | Everybody knows they suck in mud and are heavy | | Similar Products Used: | other shimano's, speedplay magnums and frogs. | | Bottom Line: | Just wanted to say that despite what one reviewer said, in my opinion these pedals have the best bearing seal ever!! Two years in slop, snow and muck and the grease inside was brand new looking. Bright neon green grease!! No contamination whatsoever. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

The weigt and mud issues is not up to date anymore. 2 chillies for function + 1 chilli for durability. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from Toronto, ON Date Reviewed: June 7, 2001 | | Duration Product Used: | More than 3 years | | Strengths: | Last forever, reliable, indestructible | | Weaknesses: | Heavy, big, ugly but it's so old I guess that's to be expected. plus it gets filled up with mud | | Similar Products Used: | ritchey, some ghetto clipless/pedal | | Bike Setup: | K2 Razorback f/s, crosslink fork, classic 95 XTR crank. race face etc.... | | Bottom Line: | I love these pedals cuz i've had em for five years and i've never greased them or taken the time to clean it; I keep meaning to but I never do cuz of school etc. In dry conditions the pedals work very well but when it gets muddy these pedals are horrible. I can barely clip in. Despite that i have to give it five chillis because they've been with me for so long. If you can buy em used though I would suggest you rather pay some more and get some 858's or somethin. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from Antioch, CA, USA Date Reviewed: May 29, 2000 | | Favorite Trail: | Ridge Trail | | Duration Product Used: | More than 3 years | | Strengths: | Durable, comfortable, predictable entry/release. | | Weaknesses: | Weight, no float, not so good in gooey mud. | | Similar Products Used: | 747s. | | Bike Setup: | Cannondale Killer V-HT with XT full-sized drivetrain. | | Bottom Line: | I've had these pedals since they first came out, and they are still working great. I've since bought a bunch of used ones to keep as spares and put on other bikes I have. I have the 747s, but because of their small platform, they hurt my feet on long rides, so I switched back to the 737s (I think Shimano made a mistake by going to such a small platform on the 747s). The 737s were the first SPDs that started the trend. They are practically bulletproof and have real ball bearings in them (unlike others where at least one of the bearings is a bushing). However they have little or no float, so your cleat adjustment must be spot on. Look elsewhere if you have sensitive knees. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I used mine for 7 years before they finally gave up. The plastic axle retain is a liability, and the lack of float would always give me sore knees on longer rides. But they're easy to get into and you stay in. Very good pedal. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

These pedals are the full on Sh*t. If you got ran over by a mack truck the pedals would survive. I sold mine for Ritcheys as I'm a weight weinie but my frugal (tight a$$) buddy has been running them since 93 and other than spraying them with WD-40 has never serviced them. When future archeologist find relics of mountain biking it will probably be a set of 737s. Rock on 737s. 6 chilis for... I mean 5 chilis for function and durability. Did I mention this product totally changed the future of MTBing. | Overall Rating: |

from Simms Date Reviewed: October 22, 1999 | | Favorite Trail: | local secret trails | | Duration Product Used: | 3 months | | Strengths: | None that I could find. | | Weaknesses: | Seals in name only, more like warnings. They barely keep out small birds and rocks, and only when new. Weaks spindles, a pain to reassemble and adjust. | | Similar Products Used: | Onza.H.O.'s, Speedplay Frogs. | | Bike Setup: | Schwinn Paramount hardtail. | | Bottom Line: | I got these pedals, used, with my Schwinn, as well as the pedal tool and new spindles/rebuild kits for them. The fact that some of the balls were crushed to powder and one spindle was bent was irrelivant to me. The seals with the new axle/rebuild kits were nasty plastic and barely any abetter than the totally worn out ones. I started to rebuild them when I realized what a pain (and I'm a good mechanic and have been a technical editor/writer) they were going to be. I'd also just been introduced to Speedlplays. It was immediately pointless to continue with the Spuds, so I traded them to my ex-wife...heh, heh, heh! | Overall Rating: |

They came on a used bike I recently bought and they obviously were hit with some rocks. I've also smashed them into some rocks since I've had them. They look really heavy, and probably are, but they will probably never break. I'd give them five chilis except that they are heavy and bulky. | Overall Rating: |
