Strengths:Looks, smooth shifting
Weaknesses:Middle chainrings bends too easily
Similar Products Used:Misc stock gear
Bottom Line:I bought my bike last year in new condition (although it had been in storage for a few yers). I made it through a season of light trails with this setup without incident. My first time out this season, the middle chainring bent! As many other reviewers said, this is just unacceptable! Time to upgrade.

I have to rate this as poor. I know several people with cheap bikes that have never had crank problems. While this crank may be ok for some, I really can't recommend anyone rely on it.

Date Reviewed: October 5, 2002
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $29.00
Purchased At:Cambria
Strengths:It makes all of the other parts on my bike go round. It was cheap also. No big difference from LX.
Weaknesses:Original chainring bolts are weak. They were very succeptible to stripping when tightened or removed. Slightly heavier than most.
Similar Products Used:STX 5-arm, LX
Bike Setup:Giant frame. Six deluxe fork. LX parts (minus the crank)
Bottom Line:For half of the price of most "cheap cranks" these have continuously gotten the job done. The 4-arm isn't noticeably flexier than either the LX or the 5-arm STX.
At $29 you can also afford to add a chanring guard and new hardware.

Overall it gets a 4 for being a little heavy.

Strengths:strong, indestructable
Weaknesses:slightly heavy (about 100g over XTR)
Bike Setup:Trek 6700 frame, LX wheelset, Marzocchi Z3 Bam forks, Time Atac clipless pedals, Specialized comp seat, tioga XC tires
Bottom Line:Other than being slightly heavy these cranks are great. They are very strong with little or no flex. I weigh 195 pounds and have been using them since 1998 without one single problem. For those of you that complain about these cranks maybe you should check your setup. The only reason to go to a more expensive crank would be to lose about 100g in weight. By the way 100g is a little less than a fourth of a pound.

Strengths:The STX rc crank is very strong I brought it brand new for $145.00 when the STX RC series first came out! That was about 4 years ago. The set has never let me down and I'v put this bike through hell. From being hit by a car to flipping out Numerious a time not a bend not a loose bolt nothing at all! The set is light weight and I got what I paid for.

Strengths:strong and understated.
Weaknesses:heavy, but come on, it makes ____ all difference.
Similar Products Used:XTR cranks, Raceface prodigy (once, awesome), all kinds of stuff
Bike Setup:Marin Nail Trail '99, Hope hubs, Avid disk front...
Bottom Line:Some of my wealthier friends have bikes with XTR groupsets on them. Yes, they ride better, are smoother, but by a massive amount? No, not as far as I can see. STX-RC, now Deore, have one distinct advantage over all that lightweight stuff. Bombproof. Two years of banging around, hitting rocks etc., neither my STX-RC cranks or rear derailleur have been broken.

One of my friends broke an XTR crank in half hitting the pavement kerb, so you tell me what's more important?

You have to understand that a lot of the people who write here are just ego boosters who don't know the first thing about bikes, and either pretend or like to think they own four figure bikes with top-end parts. They just slate this stuff because it's cheap.

And I'll let you in on a little secret, Shimano don't even bother making a noticeable difference in quality until they get to XTR, and why should they? It sells more and makes them more profit than any other groupset 'cos they're ripping wannabee riders off.

Alivio, Deore, STX-RC, it's all good stuff, don't listen to any of the haters, they are just in love with no.1, gettit?

if the crank bolt is tight enough, they wont wallow out...hell, nothing will.
Weaknesses:made of the cheapest aluminum shimano could get their hands on
Bike Setup:2000 Zaskar X, Z2, full XT
Bottom Line:i decided i wanted to upgrade these suckers before i rode one sunday, so i began taking them off. put the crank puller in, got the drive side off, tried the other side but the metal-like material of which these are made was so weak that the inner threads totally stripped out. spent the next six hours banging, cutting and prying them off. needless to say, i didnt get to ride. that makes them suck ass.

Strengths:The crank and chain rings are still working after 2 years of use, with a reasonable amount of wear. Given me no mechanical problems, what more can you ask for?
Weaknesses:Haven't had any.
Bike Setup:Norco Sasquatch, Z2 Atom 80
Bottom Line:These cranks came stock with the bike and have worked fine and haven't given me any problems, sure I don't race and don't have a problem about the weight. After about a month of use I bent the middle chain ring but this was due to poor shifting under load going up a hill by me, I fixed it with some pliers and I've had no problems since. It's showing a lot of wear now but still shifts well, the best thing about them is I've never had to think about them and can just keep on riding.

Bottom Line:This crank set came stock on my bike when I bought it 2 years ago. They are practicly BOMB proof. I've screwed 2 sets of clipless pedals (wedging between rocks hooking roots etc.) It took two years and 2589 miles (I'm not kidding) to wear out the center chainring. You can't tell what brand of crank it is any more because it is so chewed up, but they are still straight as an arrow. the only time I can feel a little bit of flex is when I'm stunting or riding drops (yes some of us cross country riders like to do drops every now and then). I don't know about the '00s but the '98s kicked royal eek. If you can't afford very much and you come across an older set ('98 '99) buy it and G.B.O.A.B.

Bike Setup:Univega DS 950, Shimano 545, firepro kevlar, Manitou x-vert.
Bottom Line:I bent three middle rings in a five month period. My local shop confirmed that there is a defect with the 1998 production run of this product. They claimed that almost all of the stx rc four arms they sold in 1998 had this problem. They swapped my crank for a five arm. Lighter recreational riders that generate less tourqe may not have this problem. If your 130-140lbs. this may be a good option. Your much better off going with the new Deore crank. Same price, much better durability.

I'd like to give the crank a four for overall performance, but the bending ring syndrome is unacceptable.

Bottom Line:I would not recommend this product to anyone over 145 Lbs. I bent several middle chain rings during extended climbs. My LBS confirmed that the 4-arm design of the STX-RC provides to much gap space between the fastening points, hence the middle ring in particular tends to bend very easyly. They gave me an STX SE 5-Arm and I've had not a problem since. I used to replace the middle ring every two-three rides! Ridiculous!Stay away for this defective 4-arm product. My LBS has recently confirmed that they've have had several other clients provide the same feedback.
My next upgrade will be to Raceface.Shimano: Are you going to do something about this? Or will you pretend that nothing is wrong like the incompetent Shimano rep. that deals with my local LBS?
