Burly and super stiff. No bent dérailleurs or hangers with this hub!
Weaknesses:
Takes a while to get used to the derailleur mounting directly on to the hub axle.

Bottom Line:
Product exactly as advertised. I have ridden hard all last season at Mammoth and this season at Northstar, probably 60 days in all of DH riding and have had NO issues with this Hub.

Stiff. High quality. Looks good.
Weaknesses:
Cup & Cone bearings, Replacement Parts not available in Indonesia. Not as tough as expected, although front hub and other shimano Saint components in my bike are still going strong.
Works well for 1 year. Then the bearings started to break. Rodalink indonesia only sell, don't back the product. They don't even have the special tools to open the nuts!!!! Let alone the cups, cones and bearings.

not sealed, shimano claims this is a stornger set up as it does not allow microscopic misallignments in the interface between cones and bearings to concentrate forces on one point causing the hub to fail. i think this is just an old habit as shimano have never caught on that in the real world sealed bearings are better.

Bottom Line:
decent inexpensive hub. DON'T BELIEVE WHAT SHIMANO SAYS ABOUT HAVING TO USE SAINT MECH! any 10 mm bolt up axle will work (eg. Hadley) and centrelock rotors can still be used with other brakes so long as the adapter suits the rotor diameter.

The rim is awesome, not bend, dings, or anything that would justify the hub failure. I posted a review on this hub a year ago. But then it was the cone and cups which came apart. The cone and cups came apart once more since then, and now the hub has broken off a the cassette. #1 ,Shimano doesn't specify that the rear hub has to be adjusted in a (very) special way!I sold three full SAINT bikes last year (one of them is mine).2 failed,the third one rides on fire roads.But the first 2 have had 2free hub replacement each(warranty).Shimano said the hubs were too tight.You should feel a bit of play when the wheel is in your hands and when your wheel is half torqed on the frame the wheel should wooble(??)and at the end when the tool cliks the slack will dissapear.(you may have to repeat your hub play adjustement a few times to figure it out so do all this before putting the rotor on,should save you a bit of time if your a shop mechanic.)#2 is that you need specific tools for this and you should do this before the bike is out of the shop because the hub will be too tight.I was a bit dissapointed but was a learning experience for myself and like any high end stuff there's always a price to pay to keep it going.

Bottom Line:
Go with something else, Saint is not all it's supposed to be. Their hub is weak. I mostly ride trails, and downhill, and I don't mind hitting the a 3-4 ft drop, but by no stretch of the imagination am I riding anything that's even compares to the Shore. If Shimano says that these hubs are supposed to with stand anything, then why after only 4-5 months is my local bike shop charging me $80 to replace the cone, cups, and bearings. Then I had to take my bike back after only three rides becasue the hub had bacame loose again. The brakes are okay, and the crank is very strong, and the front hub has been solid, but the rear hub has not performed too well, so I am giving it 3 chilies. If you do your own maintance the get the Saint group, but if your like me, a guy who loves to ride but barely finds enough time to ride, much less do repairs on his bike, go with something else that will be more reliable. I hear Chris King makes a pretty good hub.

Strengths:
super smooth and strong. the hub engages almost instanly as you crank on the pedals. nice and stiff. a seriously beefy hub.
Weaknesses:
only the fact that you must use the brakes with the hubs as well as the rear derailleur.
Bike Setup:
2002 Rocky Mountain RM9 with Mavic D321 rims, panaracer FR 2.4 tires, saint hubs brakes and derailleur, ird black lightning chain and cassette, mr dirt chain guide, XT levers and shifter, race face cranks bottom bracket handlebars and seatpost, azonic seat and pedals and a marzocchi super t pro up front.
Bottom Line:
This hub is awesome. With the through axel in the rear, it is really stiff and strong. There is almost no slack in pedaling. This is perfect for trials riding. The rear derailleur mount is a sweet touch. You cannot go wrong with this hub. It might discourage you that only the saint hubs work with their brakes and derailleur. Don't let it. Save up the extra and get the SAINT. You will never regret it.
