Date Reviewed: July 13, 2007
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:I have had these things on my bike for around 10 years, and they are still working fine. They have never been taken to a bike shop, but they have been lubed a few times. These have been ridden tons of different types of weather, such as going through creeks all day, in the rain, through mud puddles coming up past the hub, in the snow all winter, and hot sun and dust all summer, and they have never been specially taken car of after a ride
Bottom Line:These have been ridden tons of different types of weather, such as going through creeks all day, in the rain, through mud puddles coming up past the hub, in the snow all winter, and hot sun and dust all summer, and they have never been specially taken car of after a ride, even a harsh ride, and they still work fine.

Date Reviewed: February 13, 2007
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Purchased At:Stock on my 1996 GT Ricochet - D'Ornellas Bike Shop (1996)
Strengths:Durability, quiet, smooth, colour & weight.
Weaknesses:None.
Similar Products Used:Shimano Acera X (front + rear), Shimano Deore XT Disk (rear) & Rolf Dolomite Disk (front + rear).
Bike Setup:1996 GT Ricochet
Bottom Line:My 1996 GT Ricochet came stock with a Shimano Acera X (front hub) & Shimano Alivio (rear hub). I've used this bike from mid Oct.1996 to June 2001 with no problems whatsoever. The hub has always been quiet, smooth operating, a good weight to handle a clydesdale rider like myself & the colour blended in well with my other silver parts. I've used the rear hub for 9,000kms+ until I had to replace the rear wheel, due to my weight and rim without eyelets the rim cracked at 3 spoke locations.
Bottom Line: I still have the original rear wheel waiting to be attached to a new rim (with eyelets) for years of trouble-free service to put 1,000's of kilometers on.

Weaknesses:River Crossings
Similar Products Used:Shimano Deore
Bike Setup:Xtreme Cross Country
Bottom Line:The Alivio Hub at rear is great! But when it came to face 10 rivers to cross it gave up! But then I reached home without breaking. The next day, I checked on the hubs and I knew that it needs replacements. It has served me well for 1 1/2 years. Still my opinion is good! Heck! The Hubs were not maintained for 3 months and then I played with river crossings. Maybe if I did maintain it before riding it there it would have survived.

Submitted by Local Boy a Weekend Warrior from Pearl City, Hawaii
Date Reviewed: July 18, 2003
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Purchased At:Came with bike
Strengths:Cheap if you buy it aftermarket. Seems to be okay if you don't go bombing downhills or fly off stair steps.
Weaknesses:Freehub body ratchet teeth got some cavities (i.e. doesn't lock up evenly, has some areas where there is a lot of pedal travel before it locks up).
Similar Products Used:None yet....got some XT hubs on order to replace these.
Bike Setup:MTB set up for cross country.
Bottom Line:These hubs are okay for the easy rider but the freehub body mechanism is below standard. I think I chipped some teeth so it works pretty crappy. The hub bearings itself are good with no problems. If you're going to replace your hubs spend the extra money and get good ones. If these came with your bike use them until they blow up and replace them with something better. 4 pickles for value (they're cheap) and 2 pickles for overall (lousy freehub body).

Strengths:
Solid. 4 Years of creeks and landing on my face yielded no damage (to either of us).
Weaknesses:
None.
Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:
Trek 930 '95, Manitou Mach 5 SX
Bottom Line:Ok, I'm a weekend warrior. But I put these hubs through lots of creeks and over lots of rocks without ever giving a damn about maintenance for 4 years. Sure I took it to the shop maybe once a year where they may have repacked 'em, but I doubt it. And I used a high pressure hose to wash my bike off all the time. It's got a few rust spots to prove it 'cuz I never dried it off! Solid hubs. Came stock on my Trek 930.

Weaknesses:
Rear hub isn't durable
Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:

Alivo casette
Bottom Line:I had the Acera X hubs. I still have the front after 3 years and I've never even opened it up. It rolls pretty smoothly. I had the rear for 2 years. Some internal part broke after a year, it would not freewheel, I had to keep pedaling while moving. The part was replced with an LX one and I had no problems after that. For they money they're not bad, though I woudn't reccomend the rear to harder riders.

Bottom Line:came stock on gt i had.the rear hub lasted less than 2 months.the dealer replaced under warranty with an even worse balance brand that lasted 1 month(it would come loose every 20-30 miles and finnally broke)I must say though that the front alivio hub was really great as in it never came loose and was still running great on my bike up too the time some lowlife s.o.b. stole the bike last month.

Weaknesses:
Borke it before I really had a chance to ride it. So as far as that goes, EVERYTHING.
Similar Products Used:

Shimano LX
Bike Setup:
Specialized Rockhopper w/ Judy
Bottom Line:I got this hub from my LBS as a replacement for my stock Specialized hub (which is another story in itself). I rode it around town a little bit, then rode from home to another town about 20 miles away, then I went out on the trail and broke going up an incline, one loud pop and it was gone! I wouldn't give it any flaming chilies, but it looks like I have to give it at least one.

These hubs are great for their price

Because I'm cheap, I stretched my Alivio front hub to the limit-- 4 years of riding!!!! It's last year was it's hardest, having to suffer the abuses of racing mountain-bikes since I started doing that. It flexed, moaned and complained, but all in good cheer. It died a few days ago, as the skewer was the only thing holding it together. It was my best friend.....

hmm, these came stock on my bike and after three month's of riding, the rear hub was gritty and pretty busted up. I did maintain it with teflon grease etc, but nooo... it just went. well, seeing as how the hub had the unusual amount of 36 spokes i had to buy a new rim and a new hub, so i bought a LX hub. Much smoother, if these came stock on your bike, replace 'em and feel the difference.

The alivio hubs came stock on my bike and I haven't yet got around to replacing them. I nomally race every weekend and ride almost evryday during the week. The only real problem that i have noticed with these hubs is that they need to be repacked a lot. I have to repack mine about every week, however I normally ride about 80-100 miles a week.

I have a '96 Alivio Silent Clutch (Model R050) rear hub on my commuter bike. It ain't fancy, but it has done everything that I have asked of it. It has lasted over 4,000 miles with just a repack/replacement of the wheel bearings every six months. I also shoot some Finish Line Cross-Country Chain Lube into the freewheel mechanism every once in a while to flush out the crud and lube it up. (The Morningstar Freehub-buddy tool is key here) It doesn't show any signs of giving up the ghost, which is ok by me...

Should not deserve any stars. I got Alivio hubs on my bike when i got it new and they sucked, they self destructed after two weeks of heavy riding. Alivio should die especially the hubs. These hubs came stock on my Trek 850 and their just starting to lose their ability to run well after almost 650 miles. The only reason that they are dieing is that they have been run through water and used almost every day. If these hubs come on your bike don't trash them.

I got those hubs stock on my bike allmost 4 years ago.. I got more that 5000km on them and the front one is still very smooth. The back one kind of got out uf true, the racheting mecanizm is allmost dead. For the bucks they are really good hubs. I got a new UNDERWOLRD rear hub and YES Alivio is very heavy compared with some high end hubs. But because they got me so far i give them five burning chillies..

These hubs aren't bad, but they certainly aren't great. either. I found them OK until I got my wheel buckled in a road accident. I changed my front wheel for one with an STX special edition hub, which is 1000 times smoother and much freer running. I've still got the back one, though. They're well sealed, however, and showing absolutely no signs of wear even after two years riding, including some pretty heavy stuff.

Bottom Line:

Since my last review, I have learned a few things.
1. STX RC front hubs are much nicer than Alivio. For $2.00 more you get smoother internals, an oversize axle (like LX) and more polish. Front Alivio hub is a poor value, and sub par quality comp. to STX RC.
2. I like rear alivio, since it uses the old ratcheting freehub design, rather than the new silent design (which I keep hearing negative things about.)
3. Since I have never seen a regular STX hub, I don't really know how it compares to Alivio...though STX RC frnt hubs are nicer...I think STX RC rear hubs use the silent freehub mech. which I think I will avoid (personal opinion).
Alivio front rating: 3 (could be smoother, poor value comp. to STX RC) Rear Alivio Hub rating: 4 (ratcheting mech. could be smoother) Average: 3

These came stock on my bike, and I like them. They lack the polish of STX, but are virtually the same thing. One tip, open them up and lube the babies. The Factory never lubes them right... a thin film not worth acknowledging in my opinion. LUBE THEM! Squeeze in the grease until it oozes out. Mine were a lot smoother afterwards.

These suck. My rear didn't even last a year. It came on my bike and I didn't expect it to last forever but longer than 10 months. And its not like I really beat on them or anything. I ride hard but I don't race. Maybe its because i weigh 190lbs. Still shouldn't have fallen apart like that. I would recommend going up to at least an LX hub and if you need a new wheel get it handbuilt. It'll last longer. Pay the extra cash. Forget about buying these.

more can you ask? Maybe I'll try oversized locknuts sometime and see
if those help with a telescoping suspension fork. For weight weenies, the weight (for a 32 hole hub) is 8 ounces (mass
of 227g) with the included quick release skewer, and 5.5 ounces (156g)
without the skewer (actually seen on a postal scale). It is available in typical 100mm dropout spacing and 32 or 36 holes.
