I've used this bike from mid Oct.1996 to June 2001 with no problems whatsoever. The hub has always been quiet, smooth operating, a good weight to handle a clydesdale rider like myself & the colour blended in well with my other silver parts. I've used the rear hub for 9,000kms+ until I had to replace the rear wheel, due to my weight and rim without eyelets the rim cracked at 3 spoke locations. Bottom Line: I still have the original rear wheel waiting to be attached to a new rim (with eyelets) for years of trouble-free service to put 1,000's of kilometers on. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

But when it came to face 10 rivers to cross it gave up! But then I reached home without breaking. The next day, I checked on the hubs and I knew that it needs replacements. It has served me well for 1 1/2 years. Still my opinion is good! Heck! The Hubs were not maintained for 3 months and then I played with river crossings. Seems to be okay if you don't go bombing downhills or fly off stair steps. | | Weaknesses: | Freehub body ratchet teeth got some cavities (i.e. doesn't lock up evenly, has some areas where there is a lot of pedal travel before it locks up). | | Similar Products Used: | None yet....got some XT hubs on order to replace these. | | Bike Setup: | MTB set up for cross country. | | Bottom Line: | These hubs are okay for the easy rider but the freehub body mechanism is below standard. I think I chipped some teeth so it works pretty crappy. The hub bearings itself are good with no problems. If you're going to replace your hubs spend the extra money and get good ones. If these came with your bike use them until they blow up and replace them with something better. 4 pickles for value (they're cheap) and 2 pickles for overall (lousy freehub body). | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Sure I took it to the shop maybe once a year where they may have repacked 'em, but I doubt it. And I used a high pressure hose to wash my bike off all the time. Because I'm cheap, I stretched my Alivio front hub to the limit-- 4 years of riding!!!! It's last year was it's hardest, having to suffer the abuses of racing mountain-bikes since I started doing that. It flexed, moaned and complained, but all in good cheer. It died a few days ago, as the skewer was the only thing holding it together. It was my best friend..... | Overall Rating: |

hmm, these came stock on my bike and after three month's of riding, the rear hub was gritty and pretty busted up. I did maintain it with teflon grease etc, but nooo... it just went. well, seeing as how the hub had the unusual amount of 36 spokes i had to buy a new rim and a new hub, so i bought a LX hub. Much smoother, if these came stock on your bike, replace 'em and feel the difference. | Overall Rating: |

I have a '96 Alivio Silent Clutch (Model R050) rear hub on my commuter bike. It ain't fancy, but it has done everything that I have asked of it. It has lasted over 4,000 miles with just a repack/replacement of the wheel bearings every six months. I also shoot some Finish Line Cross-Country Chain Lube into the freewheel mechanism every once in a while to flush out the crud and lube it up. (The Morningstar Freehub-buddy tool is key here) It doesn't show any signs of giving up the ghost, which is ok by me... | Overall Rating: |

These hubs aren't bad, but they certainly aren't great. either. I found them OK until I got my wheel buckled in a road accident. I changed my front wheel for one with an STX special edition hub, which is 1000 times smoother and much freer running. I've still got the back one, though. They're well sealed, however, and showing absolutely no signs of wear even after two years riding, including some pretty heavy stuff.

Since my last review, I have learned a few things. 1. STX RC front hubs are much nicer than Alivio. For $2.00 more you get smoother internals, an oversize axle (like LX) and more polish. Front Alivio hub is a poor value, and sub par quality comp. to STX RC. 2. I like rear alivio, since it uses the old ratcheting freehub design, rather than the new silent design (which I keep hearing negative things about.) 3. Since I have never seen a regular STX hub, I don't really know how it compares to Alivio...though STX RC frnt hubs are nicer...I think STX RC rear hubs use the silent freehub mech. which I think I will avoid (personal opinion). Alivio front rating: 3 (could be smoother, poor value comp. to STX RC) Rear Alivio Hub rating: 4 (ratcheting mech. could be smoother) Average: 3 | Overall Rating: |

I ride hard but I don't race. Maybe its because i weigh 190lbs. Still shouldn't have fallen apart like that. I would recommend going up to at least an LX hub and if you need a new wheel get it handbuilt. It'll last longer. Pay the extra cash. Forget about buying these. | Overall Rating: |

Maybe I'll try oversized locknuts sometime and see if those help with a telescoping suspension fork. For weight weenies, the weight (for a 32 hole hub) is 8 ounces (mass of 227g) with the included quick release skewer, and 5.5 ounces (156g) without the skewer (actually seen on a postal scale). It is available in typical 100mm dropout spacing and 32 or 36 holes. | Overall Rating: |
