Submitted by Chris a Weekend Warrior from Ottawa
    Date Reviewed: July 26, 2004
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
    Price Paid: $25.00
Strengths:Looks good, bounced right back into place after hard bail.
Weaknesses:Hard to adjust, slow shifting while going up a hill.
    Similar Products Used:Altus
Bike Setup:Alivio back, Alivio front, Sr Suntour M5000, shimano comps.
Bottom Line:If you ride small, flat trails from time to time, this is the derailleur for you, but if you plan to do anything else, upgrade.

If your a beginner and have a low end bike, it's pretty good for the price, but don't expect to get many hard core rides out of this thing.

    Date Reviewed: July 31, 2003
    Duration Product Used:3 months
    Strengths:hmmmm, it shifts
Weaknesses:jumpy, loud, poor tension, shifts slow
Bottom Line:The alivio is good for flat smooth terrain. It shifts poorly on climbs or under any stress, when you actually need to shift. I almost did an endo on rough pavement when I down shifted cruising up-hill! The shifter slammed out of gear and sent me flying foward. The brothers on the corner got a good laugh but my boys were hurtin!! I've adjusted several times but it continues to malfuction after it wears in.

    Favorite Trail:horton jumps
    Duration Product Used:6 months
    Price Paid: $30.00
    Purchased At:halfords
    Strengths:it was cheap
    it worked
it was easy to fit and setup
Weaknesses:it was cheap, as were the components used to make it
    it worked, until i jumped
it was easy to fit and setup, but i couldn't get it off when i wanted to put my tension seeker on instead
Similar Products Used:standard shimano derailleur (SIS) - completely useless
Bike Setup:'cuda frame, rst fork, azonic bars, amoeba stem, fsa cranks, etc.
Bottom Line:it was quite cheap and easy to fit and after a bit of bashing on the derailleur mount, it was setup well, with swift reliable shifting. i went down to jump and after half an hour or so it wasn't really working at all. shifting was difficult and jumpy, and i could no longer get on the highest freewheel. i stuck with it for the rest of the day, and after possibly the worst jumping sesh of my life, i went home, drilled it out of my bike, poured petrol all over it and cremated it.

Submitted by bob a Cross Country Rider from katy, tx
    Date Reviewed: August 16, 2000
    Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:Works well under light load; good for flat, shiftless terrain. besides, it's made by shimano, it's pretty good. cheap too.
Weaknesses:entry level. It WILL NOT SHIFT if you are trying to spin on a steep climb. it simply stops working when climbing. why? i don't know. but it's fine for everything else. just make sure you shift much sooner than you need to.
Similar Products Used:acera (i'm on a budget here...)
    Bike Setup:motobecane 400ds stock
Bottom Line:It's cheap, don't expect to get what you DON'T pay for. If you aren't going to race, then buy one. If you are, then go with the XTR. the reason I am only giving it a 3 is cuz it just doesn't suit my needs.

Submitted by Brendan Bradley a Weekend Warrior from West Chester, PA, USA
    Date Reviewed: July 11, 2000
Favorite Trail:Any where in the Wissahickon Valley
    Duration Product Used:2 Years
    Strengths:fairly durable, very cheap
Weaknesses:shifting not too smooth, heavy, creaks a lot
    Similar Products Used:STX RC, LX
Bike Setup:Judy XC, all alivio, soon to be XT and avid arch 40s
Bottom Line:For two years of absolute abuse, the alivio has held up fairly well. Great value and a great component for a recreational rider or commuter. I have destroyed mine but only because of misuse. NOT FOR THE WEEKEND WARRRIOR! Horrible shifting if you are a hard and strong rider. Derailleur will jump and grind if you push it too much. Purchase this product if you are a beginner with all intentions of upgrading later if you become a serious rider. Best used on easy going trails without extreme conditions. Does shift well under smooth and easy conditions.
