    Favorite Trail:Santos
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
    Purchased At:Came with the Bike
Strengths:Good calipers. Easy to adjust. Not bad looking
    Weaknesses:Pads and levers
Similar Products Used:Avid Ti, and Koolmax Pads
    Bike Setup:08 Rockhopper
Bottom Line:I don't know why so many people complain. These are not $200 Disk brakes.

I changed my Pads to the KoolMax MTB Dual Compound and the AVID SD Ti Levers and I outbreak my buddies bike with his expensive Disk breaks. The calipers are great as far as I'm concerned and do not need an upgrade until they break; once they do I'll be going to disks. For now, with my current setup, they are as good as v-brakes can possibly get. I'm setting the overal rating based on a mixture of my original and new setup. It will take you about $20 to upgrade to the Koolmax pads, that will be more than satisfactory if you are unsatisfied with your stock setup.

I would not buy the ProMax setup if I had to buy it new though.

    Favorite Trail:Hardwood Mills
    Duration Product Used:1 Year
    Purchased At:Came on bike
Strengths:Good brake for a an easy rider
Weaknesses:Not good when wet or dirty
Similar Products Used:Avid SD 2.0 and Avid SD 3.0
    Bike Setup:2004 Trek 4500 and 2006 Trek 4500
Bottom Line:They're not horrid brakes, but I due recomend swapping them out for a better set if you're a heavy braker. I've swapped out the one set I've had on a trail bike. I put them on a commuter bike and haven't had any problems with them.

    Favorite Trail:Anywhere
    Duration Product Used:6 months
    Purchased At:Came on Bike
Strengths:Awsome stopping power, lock up back even with my kinetics tire! Easily lock the front on a slightly loose sirface, or stick the ass in the air for an awsome brake stand! Never get hot!
Weaknesses:Squeek under moderate to hard pressure, but only on the front, wont go away
Rubbed the paint off my rims, but thats expected
Sand and mud gets stuck under the pads and makes a constant scraping noise until it all falls out
Similar Products Used:Othe v-brakes, old school caliper brakes, coaster brakes(the best no heat no pads no derailer) lol
    Bike Setup:Ironhorse Patrol
Bottom Line:More stopping power than you need for sure, until you get them wet, then you should prey as these brakes will take a good distance to stop you, just as with any v brake(this is where disks are better), the squeel is horrible are there any brakes out there that dont? I am thinking about going for a disk on front, but all the disks seem to squeel too...wtf?
Good stoping power tho! And only need a slight adjustment from where the pads wore last summer!

    Purchased At:Came with the Bike
    Strengths:Quick Stops
Weaknesses:the springs are week I think because they do not pop back out all the time and rub the rims
Bike Setup:Haro, everything but the breaks is Shimano LX, Raceface, RS Judys
Bottom Line:There pretty good but I wouldn't recomend buying them unless they come with the bike. I plan on upgrading very soon.

    Date Reviewed: October 23, 2001
    Duration Product Used:2 Years
    Purchased At:Came with my bike
Strengths:Very good stopping power. Nice design.
Weaknesses:With the internal springs, my one brake pad still toughes the rim after i released the brakes. It seems to me that the springs does not work very good.
    Similar Products Used:Shimano Acera
Bike Setup:Diamondback Vectra with Shimano Acera Shifters and Shimano Promax brakes. Looking for good shocks.
Bottom Line:These are very good brakes with nice stopping power. It is difficult to adjust the position of the brakes. My internal springs are gone (ok, after 2 years of driving), or that is all that I can think why the brakes now does this. If you pull the brake lever and then release it, the brake releases, but only the one side moves away, the other side is still touching the rim. That is not a real problem, but if the rims are wet, it makes the most horrible sound.

The bottom line is tha this is a good brake, but rather spend a little more. I am now upgrading to the Simano Acera V-brakes, and they are much better for only a little more $$$.

    Cheap old Shimano brakes
    Bike Setup:
    See 1999 Sorrento SE listing.
Bottom Line:Great, but hard to get used to if your used to old cheap wire brakes. But really safe. Best Example: I was going down my street, and I reached 42.8 MPH. This car under estimates me (as usual) and I needed to do a deer avodence thing. I pulsed the brake (or it pulsed its self), skided a bit, did a 75 degree left turn, avoided the car. These are really good brakes.
