$20.00 | | Purchased At: | my loyal neighborhood bike shop | | Strengths: | Affordable, strong braking. | | Weaknesses: | Takes time to adjust properly, could look neater | | Similar Products Used: | some nameless taiwan POS | | Bike Setup: | Galmod Mohai frame, Syntace V-2 handlebar & stem, Shimano Deore LX drivetrain, Mavic DeeMax rims, Vetta Gel saddle, 1.5" MOB street tires, Tranz X bar ends & tribars | | Bottom Line: | Stops great in dry/dusty conditions, predictably not so good in the wet. Had the time of my life skidding and locking up the rear/front the first few months I had 'em just cos I could; couldn't do that before with my old ones. Two of my friends bought Acera too after i told 'em how good they were.
Acera takes time & patience to tune properly so both pads have good clearance while still giving you good "feel" through the brake levers. Only my mechanic can do it properly. Was planning to step up to LX brakes but the mechanic said "what for?". Other than its industrial looks and having kinda mismatched brakes for my drivetrain, these are a great value for most rec and light dirt trail uses, I guess.
I set up my MTB for duathlons & triathlons, which means I rarely use the brakes in closed-road races. I do use 'em a lot going to my training grounds, avoiding a million trucks and jeeps and pedestrians. Training's a hell of a lot more dangerous than racing because of that. Barring lockup (which is more a function of my 1.15" street tires), most other people like me will be happy with these brakes. Get these, and spend the money you saved on more important components. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$25.00 | | Purchased At: | Dokman Tweewielers, Culemborg, NL | | Strengths: | Good brakes for little money. Work well even in rain. Look better / more expensive than they are. | | Weaknesses: | Original brake pads (Shimano M-system) gone within 800 km. Mud-problems in cable guide. | | Similar Products Used: | None | | Bike Setup: | Gazelle Playa with Shimano Alivio / Shimano Acera. | | Bottom Line: | I use my bike mostly for commuting (50 km / 30 miles per day) on rather dirty country roads. Even in this rainy autumn, the brakes work very well. The original brake pads have been replaced by Fibrax brake pads, which last a long time, I expect. Mounting the brake pads right (to avoid squeeling) is very well possible, but takes some experience. Of course there are better brakes available, but here you have some good, dependable breaks for a nice price. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$25.00 | | Purchased At: | South London Cycle | | Strengths: | Great Value. If you break it who cares but good luck breaking these badboys. These badboys grip in most weather conditions. | | Weaknesses: | Eats through brake pads. | | Similar Products Used: | Shimano Deore | | Bike Setup: | I don't own a bike I own a CCM (I'm Cheap) | | Bottom Line: | These are great for the money but the pads are gone in a short time and some cheap manufacturing on the part where the cable housing ends. Can stand up to huge wipe outs like the time when I flipped and broke the fork and handle bar. These brakes are good for the price you pay but if you are really serious move up in quality. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

| | Weaknesses: | Pads wear out fast | | Similar Products Used: | Old shimano Cantilevers | | Bike Setup: | Aluminum frame, suntour shocks, all Acera components | | Bottom Line: | If you are a novice and you want the best performance/money ratio brakes on your little iron horse, go buy em´. Don´t mess around with cheap cantis. These are some solid dependable brakes, and with a good set of wheels you can stop in a dime if you want to. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
