$950.00 | | Purchased At: | Bike shop in Malmsbury | | Strengths: | Very stable downhill and cross country, climbs extremely well with relatively little bob. Takes very well to triple clamp forks. A very good all round bike, more suitable to those who like to be able to throw their bikes around DH and XC. VERY responsive. | | Weaknesses: | The rear shock is very cheap and fell apart on a downhill, but after a bit of modification it's been solid ever since. The standard front forks are fine, but wont last long. The chain has a tendancy to get stuck between the swinging arm and the chainset, which more often than not knackers the chain. The frame mount for the swinging arm is a weak link -- my frame has just cracked after about 3-4 years hard riding. | | Similar Products Used: | Marin Rift Zone | | Bike Setup: | Most components uprated, including Avid brakes, 9 speed casette and shifters and the all important Rock Shox Judy XC triple clamp forks. | | Bottom Line: | Overall a very solid bike which handles superbly. The rear shock will need some attention, and if you're using the bike primarily for downhill you may find the frame will get stress fractures within a year or so.
I'm now getting a G-ZERO FX3 to replace my cracked Vertigo Comp. It's a superb bike, and I wouldn't ride with any other geometry now -- it's first class!

$500.00 | | Purchased At: | off an old friend | | Strengths: | very good handling , it is very easy to ride ,the front shocks are good and feel really comfortable when racing over rough terrain. tha frame is well balanced and weight is distributed nicely which makes it very good for pulling off tricks 10 foot in the air , and when you do get air , it kinda hangs there for a second then descends , the wheels are set up really well the bearings are smooth and give a glider-like ride , the vertigo comp is an all rounder , it s very good on the road and handles well , it is good on downhill because it is alot of fun to ride , it is good on xc because it has good weight distribution and its balance is impeccable . | | Weaknesses: | the rear shock is appaling , its very hard to adjust seeing as you have to take the thing off before you do , also needs a constant cleaning because dirt and grime gets stuck in the threads of the screw , my advice , change the rear shock , but get springs , not air shocks , because the bike wont take it , also it depends what your doing , whatever you do dont be tempted to mess around with the forks even if you think they need a clean , theyll crumble and you will regret ever thinking about it , you wont be able to adjust the travel and you get annoying hissing sounds every time the shocks take a smack, the brakes arent bad but they could be better , they arent very reactive but slow you down well when you are fast ,the gears need constant attention and will probably go wrong somewhere , the chain will dismount itself and sometimes gets caught between the rear triangle , which is niggling and also means you have to pedal backwards when it happens | | Similar Products Used: | scott vertigo pro which is much better but costs a great deal more scott g-zero fx3, very nice just nothing wrong with it also a beginner downhill bike like the vertigo comp | | Bike Setup: | front shocks are rockshox indy c rear shocks are standard issue handlebars are scott standard bars the headset is made by tioga the stem is by acor the chainset is shimano stx ( supposed to be top of the range) the shifters are grip shifts made by osram the rear triangle is standard issue the tyres are road/dirt medium tread shimano hubs shimano quick release skewers on both wheels
| | Bottom Line: | performs well but is dissapointingly expensive to run , dont buy a second hand one , and always buy one from a specialist retailer who knows what hes talking , and dont pay more than 500 quid for it because it costs 800 brand new and were talking 5 or 6 years old . dont take their crap, their out to make money and your out to save it , they will probably try to barrack you with excuses like its top of the range , it was top o t r in 1997 and technology is considerably better in the present . it is a good bike for beginners and i used to have one im not trying to swerve you from it , because it is a good bike , it just needs alot of attention. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
