Strengths:3 Mode rear shock (with remote selector), my favourite part of the rear shock is the Traction Control mode, spend 80% of my time in this mode. Sucks up a lot of the bumping.
Front shock is good, the U-turn is nice all be it I seem to stick to 130mm setting. Lock out on the rear and the bike feels just like a boaring hardtail, no matter how hard you pedal. Weight for a dual suspension bike in this price range is awesome. Mine weighs in at 12.5kg.
Weaknesses:Front derailleur (LX) can't get it setup perfectly for the range I like to ride in, when on 2nd blade on the front, the chain rubs when in gears 1-3 on the rear. Sometimes does change down from the large front gear.

Front brake no matter what rubs. Tried a number of tricks, but it tends to provide unneccessary resistance. Could be a dud disc.
Similar Products Used:Last bike Schwinn Mesa, but it isn't near the class of the MC40.
Bike Setup:Standard, will in the not too distant future upgrade the front derailleur.
Bottom Line:Excellent bike, no regrets, perhaps if I could shop over again, I would choose a better shop to buy from.

Very comfortable, saves plenty energy by absorbing the shock transferred from the rear by the standard hardtail.

Strengths:i have ridden the bike for 2 years and do very little maintainance on it,im ashamed to say,but thats testiment to the strength of the bike.great allround bike.good crosscountry bike, great downhill.it likes to jump too.it flatters its rider, makes me look and feel good on it.it gets good comments by other bikers on rides, even if some are bike snobs.only limited by the rider.
Weaknesses:creaks a bit,but im heavy so maybe that has something to do with it?? could do with little bit more rear travel for some of the stupid riding ive done (stainburn forrest,uk).my mate purchased one at the same time and broke a rear suspension pivot on it,but it was replaced under warranty.had problems with pace rc40 carbon forks i upgraded to,not on normal spec,so dont worry. product weaknes: me,the rider.expensive shock service.
    Similar Products Used:marin shoeline trail,spec enduro,orange 5
Bike Setup:set up as manufacture recommendations, put little more pressure in rear shock, its better.wound down pace forks from 140mm to 130mm,much better.spec enduro tyres are the way forward although there is small clearance for the rear tyre at 2.2.use a 2.0,much better
Bottom Line:the dogs. if you feel this bike isnt good enough for you then you are a far better/stupid rider than me and your name is probably steve peatt

    Purchased At:Local bikeshop
Strengths:Adjustable rear travel(long travel, short travel & lockout-all from a handlebar lever). Fast. Great dependable Marzocchi forks. Shimano drivetrain, it just works.
Weaknesses:Rear suspension bearing not up to the job, far too small for the intended purpose & insanely expensive to replace, must buy as a complete kit even if only one bearing fails. I know because I am just in the process of replacing a second set of bearing. Very disappointing.
Similar Products Used:KHS, Avanti, Cannondale, Marin, Proflex, Specialized etc. MTBing for over 21 years
Bike Setup:Mixture of LX/XT, good dependable stuff
Bottom Line:Lovely bike, with innovative adjustable rear suspension, let down by poorly designed & very expensive rear bearings.
Aside from the bearing issues, this bike makes a great XC trail bike/race bike, fast on the flats & on the uphills, care needed on the downhills (but that could just be my lack of skills on the descents)

Strengths:Rear lockout is ausome perfect for all mountain and xc race. love the rebound adjustability on both frount and rear shock. Loves downhill with the large amount of travel especialy being a xc bike.
Weaknesses:cockpit loaded with scott components and my stem needs to be tightened frequently, crackling sound otherwise and looseness. deor hubs wanted to pay for better. dual control can be veiwed as a weakness or streangth of not rowding the cockpit
Similar Products Used:jamis dakar, specialized hardrock,
Bike Setup:follow the air pressure settings for your waight. i thought i'd play round with it to find the perfect pressure but so far the givin pressure is best
Bottom Line:This bike is great. I love it its light and the componentry is great, quality put in the right spots....xtr rear derailier. Rear shock lock out makes this a very versitile bike. Handles well and brakes make you stop....fast. need to consider changing to tubless tires, new stem and handlebars to make this a real good race and rec bike.

    Favorite Trail:Sparrow Hill
    Duration Product Used:6 months
    Price Paid: $2500.00
    Purchased At:Lonsdale Cycles
Strengths:Beautifully balanced, easy to adjust suspension, has lockout system for rear shock, awesome handling, turns heads.
Weaknesses:Seat post slips. Has some cheaper deore hubs, shifters etc. Mine had a dudd rear shock.
Similar Products Used:Giant VT 2, Specialized Hardrock Sport
    Bike Setup:Standard 2004 Genius MC 40 setup.
Bottom Line:This bike will make a slow rider into a fast one in weeks. The Fox Talas forks are the bomb and are a good reason to buy this bike over the MC50. XTR derailer changes gears smooth and whenever I want (some people don't like dual control levers though). Downhill this bike has superb handling. The front and back suspension work to keep those tires on the ground through bumpy terain so you get fantastic traction and control. Uphill you can lockout and away you go.
My bike initially had a dudd TC rear shock (was losing air between chambers). Shop replaced with another one no hassles. Been tip top since then.

    Duration Product Used:3 months
    Price Paid: $2000.00
    Purchased At:bike shop
Strengths:All-round superb machine. Goes up like a greased gerbil in Richard Gere, and comes down twice as fast (and smoothly). Beautifully designed fully-adjustable suspension.
Weaknesses:Nothing serious. Comes with sissy deore hubs, cassette and cranks, so you'll need to upgrade- brake pads (LX) and tyres (Scott Cougar)need replacing too as they're low performance. Has my name written all over it.
    Similar Products Used:Treks and GTs
Bike Setup:Standard, except for XT drivetrain and mavic wheelset
Bottom Line:This bicycle is awesome, I ride it 100km weekly, mostly offroad. The Scott MC40 is a cross-country bike which is tough enough to class as a free-ride beast. It climbs like a spider-monkey on crystal meth (fast and fleet-footed), both in full suspension mode (5.1 inches) and 'traction control' (3.5 inches). On the flats it floats on 5 inches of front and rear air-springs without bobbing, and accelerates hard. Downhills are bliss; intense, insane, indestructable, ball-tearing high-speed bliss. The bike is light (12.5 kg) yet strong with excellent build quality. I highly endorse this black beauty, using the maximum quota of flamin' turds...
