Strengths:Cromoly Steel , excellent bike design, great high end Shimano Components, Very Strong Black and red dart paint design. nice brakes and brake levers, love the handle bar.Has matching RED and Black Rock shox.

Bottom Line:This is a very thoughtfully made bike .From the frame to the design and the color scheme. The matching shocks were such a nice touch. The bike handles well. It is sturdy and looks really nice too. Considering what people paid for similar show off bikes in the nineties, this was a bargain and MORE than well worth the money. !!! The bike new was about 850.00. This bike is super !!

I would Highley NOT recommend that any one let them touch there motor.
It also took them over 6 months to do the work, and I was told it would only take 6 weeks.

Bottom Line:Great bike. I'll never part with it! If the frame finally has enough of my abuse and snaps, I'll be on eBay to buy another 90-something Moab or Homegrown. The geometry is perfect and after all these years the frame still looks cool. Too bad the Schwinn legacy is no-longer, thanks to the mass-merchandising of the line.

Date Reviewed: April 8, 2003
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $349.00
Purchased At:bike.2itB.com
Strengths:100% chromoly frame, "epicenter" seatstay
Weaknesses:RST( antique) 2" travel fork, ProMax top pull cantilever brakes & levers, Shimano Acera hubs & Weiman wheels, Grip Shift shifters, Moab "heavier-than-hell" steel handlebar & stem
Similar Products Used:Gary Fisher "Hoo Koo Doo Doo" pile of crap hardtail
Bike Setup:With a limited budget, I bought a used orange Marzocchi Z1 Bam fork w/ 100mm travel (4"), put Shimano Deore V brakes and XT levers on for stopping, bought a pair of black Alex rims and Formula hubs, Kore downhill handlebar and a stem from a 2003
Mesa GSX. I left the "Grip Ships" on (until they break)
Maxxis 2.35 Mofos front and rear.
Bottom Line:This is an ugly 17" burgundy steel, late1995 Moab2 that was collecting dust at my local bikeshop. Its been in the shop since late 95, and according to the bikeshop owner, has been looked at by very few people. Why? It was pathetic--w/ the old cantilever brakes, 2" travel RST burgundy colored to match fork, dusty framed and some stupid jerk stole the front "Schwinn" emblem from the headtube, leaving half the sticker residue. It was originally a $599 bike. I paid $350 for it including the updated parts(see above). I also managed to find a round "Schwinn Quality" sticker for the front head tube. Its a real nice ride now. 7 speed is outdated but it rides great. Steel is real. A bit heavy but nice. The bike w/ its 100mm Marzocchi Z1 slips through any bumpy trail with ease. I think the "epicenter" seat stay makes the frame easier to handle(maybe psychological). Burgundy isn't my favorite colour for a bike, but with its handling and updates, its now pretty sweet. It also sports a "historic"
sticker on the seat tube----"Schwinn 1895-1995 100 Year Anniversary"

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Purchased At:Homewood Cycles
Strengths:Nice looking colors and design. Strong, aggressive, nimble.
Weaknesses:sized a little small. Other than that, the 1998 version is great. Currently, however, Pacific Bike Inc. (who now owns Schwinn) is a little slow on the support of product. Schwinn name being tainted by Pacific's desire to make a Wal-Mart POS version of this once respected company.
Similar Products Used:Schwinn Highplains (old school), Schwinn Mesa
Bike Setup:Mostly Deore LX, Thudbuster seatpost...
Bottom Line:I got this frame as a warranty replacement for my 1991 Schwinn High Plans Alum which finally gave up in 1998 during a ride. Schwinn sent me the Moab frame as a replacement, and having this great frame moved me from the casual weekend rider to the serious racing rider. 2 words: Great frame. Good enough for racing. Dependable and very aggressive geometry. Even though the frame is nearly 5 years old, the colors and design still look good. Excellent for the $$. Pacific owns Schwinn now. We will see if they maintain the line.

The new ones (2000) are still in the same price range with better components, so they're an even better value. They climb well, cornering is stable & tight, and fast on the flatlands.5 chilis !

Strengths:Awesome looks, excellent value
Weaknesses:Destroyed the plastic pedals, got flats in desert
Bottom Line:I bought a Moab II aluminum in late 1996 or early 1997. I destroyed both pedals within 30 days. It was very stupid of Schwinn to put resin pedals on the bike. The Moab II is the very best value among the Moabs. For the extra money, I didn't think that Moab I had much in the way of extra features ( more ugly crank, clipless pedals ).

I got lots of flats commuting in the Arizona desert. Other than that, I have no complaints at all. It's my first mountain bike, but I'm a road bike nut and I've owned several classic road bikes. This is my pick for an instant classic among mountain bikes...

This bicycle says "Schwinn" very strongly. I think the new owners have almost perfected the look of classic Schwinn bicycles.

I have a 1997 Cro-Mo Moab 2. When I was in the market for buying a bike I test rode a lot of bikes in the same price range and the Schwinn Moab was by far the best one in the whole bunch. I have been everywhere with this bike and it is an awesome entry level bike. I even raced all last year and I did really well in the series that I competed in. But now that I am more serious about riding and racing I just bought a Homegrown FS that I plan on racing with but I will still keep my Moab because it is a damn good bike.

I bought My 1998 Moab 2 aluminum Last summer. I have done everything to that bike and it still comes back for more. The most serious thing I have broke on the bike was the middle chain ring, but only because shimano never made the middle chain ring strong enough for 98. So if you buy one upgrade the middle chain ring to an LX or if you are a hard core Mountain biker like me go to an XT. This bike is the best bike for its price on the market. It feels like more than it really is.

Bottom Line:

I was looking at the 1998 Moab 2 Cro-Mo, and was on my way to the store with full intentions on buying it......until I got there. There it was, calling me, the 1999 MOAB 3 AL. The paint job on this bike is the same kick ass Schwinn red & black, but the frame under the paint is 20X more responsive than the Cro-mo, and rides so much better. The ugly, uncomfortable Moab seat on the ‘98 was replaced by a new SDG Comp seat which looks better, and feels so much better. The Titec Lil Stem also looks better than the Kore, but again feels better as well.
For 1999, Schwinn down-graded the crank to alivio, and the front derailleur to Acera (yuck) but the only difference between an altus front derailleur and a XTR is weight. The shifters are Alivio instead of STX-RC, but it's Rapidfire+, which means you get those nifty little gear indicators which do nothing more, but look so cool. The rims were changed from the Mavic X138, to Weinmann Zac19 rims. All of these downgrades are made for a reason. They managed to lower the price to $650, and added Rock Shox's brand new Judy C!!!!! In my opinion, this shock beats the living S#!% out of last year's crap of a shock Judy T2. The C has Type III springs that are oil-bath lubricated. All this means is that during every stroke both up and down, the shock lubricates itself. The only maintenance needed is a weekly spray of oil under each fork boot. Oh yeah, did I forget to mention the 80mm of travel! For some bikes, 80mm is too long, but it compliments the Moab 3's geometry perfectly. Is also has 15mm of negative travel, so the chances of the fork topping out is practically zero. No matter what I've ridden through, the fork stuck to the earth like super glue.
The Geometry is a little long, but perfect for cross-country. It climbs like a mountain goat, and the epicenter seat stays transfer power better than a Ferrari. I bought the bike last Sunday (9-20-98) and I have already logged 70.51 miles on it. Oh yeah, there is one thing that sucks about this bike. The Chainstay protector (similar to scotch tape) is completely worthless, and mine has already been broken through, exposing the frame. My next purchase will be the Lizard Skins Neoprene chainstay protector which should take care of that. The greatest characteristic of this bike is the upgradeable capacity. The Judy C is disc brake compatible, and the Moab has the same Homegrown geometry. Full XTR, and disc brakes would make this bike suitable for Steve Larsen.

I LOVE THIS BIKE!!!!! This is such a great bike, it out performs everything in it's price range. I got a 2 year old cro-mo one (first real bike) and I still love it!!! Since it is cro-mo, it is a little heavy, but the ride tuned fram rules, this bike just begs to be ridden. paint and matte finish rule, upgraded RST to a sweet Manitou with 80 mm of travel, threadless, clipless pedals (nashbar, great deal), Cateye Enduro (awesome, looks rule), tires, v-brakes, and I love my bike. The biggest failure I have had with this bike in 2.5 years of HARD riding, even some downhill insane stuff, the biggest failure I have had is either a flat tire or once a chain falling off. Have owned 98 Moab 2 for four months. After trying about 15 bikes out over two days instantly fell in love with this one. Still feel the same. Only complaint is that it threw me over the front-end and did some shoulder damage. But that was probably more my fault than the bike's. It actually handled the spill well as it seems to handle everything well. I actually prefer it on the road over my Schwinn Prologue road bike. It replaced my Schwinn Sierra on the trails. As you can see I seem to be addicted to Schwinns and this bright blue Moab 2 (Al) is a good example why. All the chlili peppers you got!

I love this bike, I bought it about 3 months ago at my local bike shop. I had them upgrade the fork to a '98 Rock SHox Judy XC and GripShift 600. I love the difference. The one I bought didn't come with clipless pedals but I have recently upgraded to them. I love the Reynolds double butted CroMo frame it is fairly light and I have great control with the bike. The only thing that could be better are the derailleurs, crank, and front hub. Don't get me wrong, they work perfectly, but if you are a racer or hard rider like myself you need to upgrade. I am going to upgrade to XT front and rear derailleurs, and LX hubs and crank. Overall this is a great bike for under $1000. if your looking for a good hardtail check this one out.

I was used to a old trek 830 with no suspension, bad breaks, and just about everything on it squeaked. I am a rookie to this fun!! So my experience is limited. However, I upgraded from a six year old Trek after reading many reviews here and shopping around between the Trek 8000/7000, Schwinn Moab 2/1, and the Mesa GSX. Decided on the the Mesa GSX, yellow mainly because I am a beginner. Compared to these other bikes, the difference was felt, but $500 seemed more reasonable...the 1998 is sold out Country wide. So I went with the Moab 2. F------g WOW!!! The Moab at the shop seemed cleaner and comfortable running around on the street. Well, take this baby out on the trails and hang on. At least that what I felt like. Made it up incline I never made before, then shifted and thought the bike was going to leave me behind. Yes, any bike can do that. But something just says ride me baby. It still will not climb in bed with me.

The draw backs were the components (Moab XC tires, Shimano Deore r.deraillor, Kore stem, STX-RC crank). Once I replace the componets the proformence incressed. The first month with the stock componets fadded quickly for me because I like to abuse the product, depending on what type of rider you are and how you ride the components might work for you. If you like to know what componets I replace, read on if you want to know more about how the MOAB rides or want to share MOAB experiences E-mail me or go get one of your own.
(Componet factor: how it works and how it looks.)
Michelin WildGrippers - awsome green snot for the MOABs.
Titec stems - feel like the big boys of Schwinn.
Kooka cranks - funky colors to bring out more Schwinns retro colors.
Shimano R.R. rear deraillor - simply because Shimano knows whats best.

Full Reynolds 525 tubing, not like GT's cheap cro-mo frame that's only the mainframe. The Judy T2 fork is great for off road use, the Avid v-brakes are a better but than the Shimano LX's, lighter, BETTER LEVER! The frame is definately worth the up-grade, not only is it reasonably light, but it has nice mud clearance and sweet handling characeristics. Okay, fellas first of all let me thank everyone who has written a review on this site. I read lots and lots of reviews and found them a valuable research tool. I do find that there are very few bad reviews and I feel like the number of peppers given is generally too high, leaving little room for improvement. I really did my homework before buying my new mountain bike. I read everything and rode everything in the $500 to $750 price range. My overall impressions are that this is a great year to buy a bike. Money in this range buys a whole lot of bike from any of the quality manufacturers.I do feel like there are good bike shops and poor bike shops and used that as one of my criteria for which shop to by from. Some of the shops I dealt with were really unhelpful. One in particular, which I had driven across town to visit would not let me test ride their bikes because it was raining! Now, this is Oregon. The chance of a sunny, non-work day between now and June is slim. Besides, I was willing to ride in the rain what’s their problem. Anyway, I eliminated their shop from contention on the spot. Other shops I found went out of their way to make a sale. Me: I am 6’1, ~195# and this would be the second mountain bike that I have owned. I was upgrading from on older Nishiki steel bike that has seen better days but has always performed admirably. Fortunately (?) that bike was stolen at the end of summer and thus the shopping began. I was looking for a deal on a ’98 or close-out ’97 with either steel or aluminum frame, front shox, decent component group, rapid fire, v-brakes, but most of all racey, nimble geometry that felt fun every time I rode it, light weight and the ability to climb. Gary Fisher Hoo Koo E Koo: My LBS sold a ton of these last year. The reviews on mtbr.com were generally favorable from a feel and component level but none of them ever said much about whether or not the bike is fun to ride. I rode one and found it to be sluggish and long. It felt exactly like my old Nishiki steel stud. Smile factor: low, blah blah blah. Conclusion: Eliminated from contention.Trek 6500zx: I rode a close out ’97 one of these that the bike store guy was going to make a smokin deal on ($499 with LX v-brakes). I really wanted to like this bike but just couldn’t. The ride was nothing exciting. That coupled with the non-replacable rear derailer hanger and the less than exciting components and I was able to pass on this without regrets. Smile factor: low. Conclusion: Eliminated from contention.Trek 7000zx: I rode a used ’96 Trek 7000zx with about 100 miles on it and was really impressed. This thing was feather light and really nimble. It desparately needed a tune up and the guy simply wanted too much money for it. Plus it had grip shift (ugh!!) and cantilever brakes that could not stop the bike. I did the math and could not justify buying used when new bikes were available for the same money with all the things I wanted. Smile factor: High. Conclusion: buy new, Eliminated from contentionSchwinn Moab: I rode the Schwinn bikes along with Specialized at the same LBS. I rode a top of the line Schwinn as that what they had on the floor and compared that to a Rockhopper FS by Specialized. The Schwinn frames felt fun but just did not feel comfortable to me or my 5’8 friend. They seem to have value at this price point but I could not like the geometry. Smile factor: Medium. Conclusion: Eliminated from contention.I had narrowed the field down to two bikes that were both excellent as far as I was concerned. The Specialized Rockhopper FS versus the Kona Lava Dome. Kona Lava Dome: This bike is fun, fun, fun and loaded with great components for the price (’98 ~ $550 at LBS). I immediately like the ride and new that this would be a front runner. Nimble, light, quick, climbs like a cat. Shifted and stopped perfectly and literally shot out from under me with a push on the pedals. Smile factor: Ear to Ear. Conclusion: Great Bike. I recommend it highly. Best buy in this price range.Specialized Rockhopper FS: This bike was in contention for first place. Great frame, flawless construction, super feel and response. Components were less than exciting and the bike was being sold heavily on frame and upgradability. Despite the lackluster compo group I almost bought this bike (’98 ~ $550 at LBS). Smile factor: High. Conclusion: Great bike but make them upgrade the front derailer. Best buy in this price range. In the end: There it was; time to decide between the two. But, what’s that in the back of the rack? A ’97 VooDoo with LX rear, LX shifters, LX v-brakes, STX-RC fd, WTB saddle, more. Rode it, rode the Kona again, haggled awhile, bought the VooDoo. Super feel, steel bike, light, agile, cat-like, precise, and on and on. Smile factor: Off the charts. Conclusion: What can I say, I bought it. Price? $575. Happy? You cannot know. JSteel bikes still rule. I rode everything in aluminum and everything in steel. Give me steel.

a grassy strip, but the bike handled great. Can't wait to see what it can
do in the Real Great Outdoors. Only fault I could find was the slippery
seat and the kinda strange paint job.

MoaB RuLeS!!!I just brought my '97 Moab 2 Cro-Mo yesterday and have been attacking the local hills in town... this bike is spankin! It is my first MTB and feels like i have been riding it for years! I can't wait to see how this frame manouvers when I get some seroius trail time in! Came equipped with toe-clips, IndyXC, barends, LX/STX comp. LX-V's, and Rapidfire Shifts. Maybe i'll follow some advice and get lighter tires. Best bang for the buck!!!

What an excellent bike for the money, I purchased my Moab-2 back in May of 97. The only improvement made was to upgrade to Shimano 747's, other than that the bike performs incredible. I am a body builder and I weigh in at about #240, and this bike takes me about 100 miles a week, and I have yet to break it!(I have caused the rims to un-true once) Shirts off to Schwinn!

I purchased a moab 3 cromoly 2 months ago. It seemed to be the best bang for the buck,I have not been dissapointed. I had the bike shop upgrade it to LX v-brakes at cost. I also upgraded the STX derailuers to XT (personal preference). It rides great and handles like my friends Factory Homegrown. The only other change I'll probably make is to a lighter tire. For the money this bike rules!

i own the moab 3 alumminum with indy c (instead of quadra) and ever since i've been looking arond for a better deal and haven't found one. The bike rides great. The only problem i have with the bike is that the araya wheels come out of true way too often.

I bought the Moab 1 aluminum 6 weeks ago, after 2 months of serious shopping around. This bike was the best buy, a good $300 cheaper than his Scott Comp Racing cousin (same major specs) -- i really don't understand their pricing policy. I love the bike, light, good looking, awesome paintjob hard to scratch.
I just have two complaints, for my 6'4' the 21' frame is a little too long (very long stem) and not high enough, i'm missing an inch for perfect seating, but i guess that since i had just such a great bargain on the bike, i could just buy a new seatpost and stem!

I bought a MOAB 2 Alum a month ago. I spent a great deal of time researching the many different bikes in this basic price range and talking to several of my buddies that are die hard, hard core, treadheads. The unanimous conclusion is that this is the best frame, geometry, and component setup for the price. I originally was looking at the MOAB 3 Cromo on sale for $499. However, after reviewing the components upgrade (perticularly the Avid S digit equipment, Scott Clipless pedals, and 8 spd cog). You lose a little in components going to the Alum., but the loss is minimal and to me that was worth it. I paid $770 at my local Schwin dealer with a good quality bottle, cage, one year service, and 20% off all accessories. Oh yeah, the Kandy Lime color is pretty trick. Enjoy!!
