$200.00 | | Purchased At: | Local Giant dealer | | Strengths: | Lightweight and affordable. US$200 covered the cost of the frame plus a new seatpost and aheadset. Also included swapping the parts from my busted Giant ATX to the new Schwinn Moab 2 frame. | | Weaknesses: | None so far. | | Similar Products Used: | Schwinn, Trek, and Cannondale hardtails (broke the Cannondale as well... makes me wonder if Giant makes their frames too???) | | Bike Setup: | XT/LX, Rockshox Judy SL, Cane Creek | | Bottom Line: | After busting the Giant ATX I was a bit miffed when the product manager for Giant in Taiwan suggested I buy a new Giant frame (US$700) as they do not stock replacement parts. Not much of a confidence booster, huh? So I scoped the local Giant shop and saw the Schwinn Moab 2 frame on the wall. Made a deal w/ the guy and picked it up late that night, parts stripped off the ATX and on to the Schwinn, good to go.
After six years of riding dual suspension bikes I forgot how uncomfortable a hardtail can be. My wife rides a Giant SE3 w/ a Rockshox suspension post and was nice enough to purchase a Cane Creek Thudbuster for me. Difference was night and day. Honestly, I was hating the Schwinn's ride for the first month, but w/ the Thudbuster installed, this bike is now a keeper. Lightweight and perfect layout as I am a take over six feet and just under 200lbs.

I would have rather have seen a better wheelset, and tires that didnt squirm, than the XT derailer. The bike if full of compromises, and after 3/4 or a season, my bike is toast the only thing left standing is my wheelset that I added. After 6 months my headset got a real nasty notch to it, and good luck finding a replacement, there are quarter size dents in the down tube, and even a hair line crack in the one seat stay. The bike would be ok for someone that doesnt ride as much as me, but I ride 5 days a week on my mountain bike alone, so if you are gonna keep the bike a long time and really get into the sport save up some more money and buy something like the dakota XC | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$720.00 | | Purchased At: | LBS in Denver | | Strengths: | Best Selection of Components for $$$. Durable, light frame. Judy SL | | Weaknesses: | Like everyone else said - rear wheel, including the hub. | | Similar Products Used: | Fisher Big Sur, Giant XTC | | Bike Setup: | Straight from the shop | | Bottom Line: | I looked all over before deciding to buy this bike, and found it to be the best bike available for under $800. I was about to get the Big Sur, until I realized that the Moab 2 offered an upgrade on every component (derailleur, brakes, shock, pedals, etc.) After 6 months of riding 2-3 times per week, I'm confident I made the right choice. After smoking some of my friends up some hills, I thought I was a great climber. Then I rode their bikes and realized that the Moab 2 actually made climbing easier. Guess I'm not that cool after all. Not only does it climb well, but the shock makes for a great downhill - for a hardtail. After truing the back wheel a few times, it seems like it's not going crooked quite as easy. The real hub is still making all sorts of weird sounds. Hopefully, it will get better when I repack the bearings. Other than that, it’s a great bike. The only reason you shouldn't buy this bike is if you have $2000 to spend on a bike, or if you can only be seen on a Fisher or Cannondale. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$600.00 | | Strengths: | As everyone says:unbeliavable value for the price paid. The frame is really worthy of upgrading. Also kinda light. And good looking. | | Weaknesses: | Well, the components for the european market are a bit different than them USA ones. So I got to get rid of some stupid Alivio (I think) brakes. Also, the stock wheels were weak, especially for heavier riders like myself (100 kg). But I took care of them as well (changed them). Pedals suck. | | Similar Products Used: | Test rides only,on serious bikes though (Scott, Schwinn, Sintesi) | | Bike Setup: | Deore front,LX rear,Deore brakes,Sun Mamooth rims with XT hubs and some fat DT spokes,Ritchey Rizer Pro bar,Panaracer tires | | Bottom Line: | I bought a great bike. I made it perfect with some changes. Very happy. It is a shame Schwinn seems not in great shape. I hammer this bike a little harder than most xc riders, and have taken through some rough stuff including drops up to 3ft. Im not the lightest guy either at about 200lbs. Cranks are cool and strong | | Weaknesses: | The grips kinda suck and I wanna get a pair of Bontrager "Egro" cuz they stick like glue and they don't wear off easy. The shifters could be upgraded to LX so u can use the flight deck on them. The raiser bar is weird cuz i can't get me computer next to the stem w/o it being a little tilted. | | Similar Products Used: | 2001 Trek 8000 | | Bike Setup: | Stock | | Bottom Line: | The bike is the bomb and I got my bike $350 off retail and I paid half of what my friend paid for his Trek 8000 ($1200) They are basicly the same bike except the wheels and shifters, but he has some pretty cool wheels. If u are looking to race and u don't know what to get, get this bike cuz it is the bomb, I'd even let u test ride my bike as long as u don't get it dirty or scratched or messed up or crash with it or mess with the fork and the deraluiers... This bike works like a dream cuz it just is. I seriously think that Schwinn didn't look at this bike too closley when they let it off the production line cuz the value for this bike is incredable. $880.00 | | Purchased At: | Blue Sky Bicycles | | Strengths: | fairly light, good geometry, good value, good selection of components, and just a good ride all around. | | Weaknesses: | Rear rim sucks. Headset keeps clunking even after adjustment (LBS is going to replace it at the end of the season). The frame is very noisy on my bike. | | Bike Setup: | stock except XT front derailleur | | Bottom Line: | I love this bike and I love the way it rides. I'm very happy with the purchase. The rear rim just flat out sucks though. The spokes are constantly going out of tension, the rim needs truing after almost every ride, and the worst part, some of my spokes are stretched to the limit already (I ran out of adjustment). I have ~25 hrs on this bike. No big drops (2' at most), just lots of roots and smaller rocks, and I'm only 125 lbs and I'm the slowest (and by far the lightest) rider in my group. Weak weak weak. The front rim however has held up just fine.
The frame sound may be an internal crack. It occurs near the headset (we've removed the headset and the sound still occurs) while flexing the frame and can be felt in the weld between the top and bottom tubes. We'll see what happens with more hours of riding. I honestly believe that this was just bad luck for me though.
Overall though, I love this bike. It just rides so nice and comes with a great selection of parts (other than the rear rim). If Schwinn weren't bankrupt, I'd highly recommend this bike. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

However i'm starting to second guess all this trade off of strength for weight. My old bike was a cromoly moab ss and i rode that thing into the ground without replacing anything because of breakage. (except for when it fell of a 30ft cliff into the mississippi, that's when i decided to get a new bike). I would buy this bike again but would up grade to some more durable parts right off the bat. Great tires, I thought about changing them before I even left the showroom, but Im glad I stuck with them. The cockpit is all Kore, it feels great as well as looking cool. | | Weaknesses: | Those damn wheels. Im not so worried about the front, but Im constantly having to true the rear. The spokes are like paper thin and flimsy, and even broken a few. Also the seat is hard and narrow. I will definitly get my wheel respoked with some heavier, and better quality spokes. Hopefully that will take care of that problem. One more thing, the bottom bracket is cheap and I have already killed it. | | Similar Products Used: | Fisher HooKooEKoo | | Bike Setup: | Stock, Ive only changed the sorry grips for some odi rampage. | | Bottom Line: | I did review on this bike about 2 months ago just after purchasing it so I felt I needed to do a more accurate and experinced review. I still believe this bike is the best bang for the buck. No other bike in this price range could match the componetry or frame. It is a great all around bike, whether you're hammering uphills or screaming down a winding single track. The weaknesses are few, and easily, and cheaply corrected. I ride a lot of pavement XC and rural gravel with some hardpack hiking trail for a change of pace. My daily loop varies from 14 to 42 miles and this bike is up to the beating my 197# dishes out. Maybe I should have bought the 21" as I'm using most of a 400mm seatpost, nah. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$860.00 | | Purchased At: | Pro Cycles | | Strengths: | Geometry rocks, Judy SL is a great fork, Clipless rule on this bike, XT rear deral. is nice, front derail ok, brakes are good, Frame is wicked light and strong, a definate plus there. | | Weaknesses: | RIMS AND SPOKES! my god! It's sad how people try to save a few miliounces (i don't even think that is a measurement but it would be really small) on their spokes. this is my biggest problem and complaint. The rims are just cheesy, i managed to warp my rear tire so bad the first day on a medium drop so that it would rub against the frame and stripped the paint off. i've haven't had any good things about the rims and spokes. I'm always warping them and they're continuously wobbly and out of place. This weekend (6/9/01) i'm gonna go to my local bike shop and loose these things, they've been too much of a pain. just gimme some heavywieght double walled rims and heavy duty spokes. i'm not concerned w/ weight at all, just strength because these are really a negative aspect of the bike. A definate replacement right there. | | Bike Setup: | All Stock plus stubby bar ends, the usual tools and stuff, and a new rear wheel soon. Maybe some disc brakes in the future. | | Bottom Line: | I ride Cross country/downhill and this bike is absolutly great. Just get rid of those rims and this bike will take you anywhere. An excellent bike, worth every penny. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$820.00 | | Purchased At: | Riverside cyclery | | Strengths: | Great value, you cant find a better spec bike for the price. Its light, durable, and looks great. I love the geometry, its very comfortable and laid back enough that I feel confident on steep decents. | | Weaknesses: | Low end avid brakes. They get clogged with dirt and bind up a bit. | | Similar Products Used: | Fisher Hookooekoo | | Bike Setup: | Stock, JUdy sl, xt lx mix, kore cockpit, you know what it comes with. | | Bottom Line: | This is great bike in price range, but at under 900.00 dollars it cant be beat. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$850.00 | | Purchased At: | Central park bicycles | | Strengths: | light, good derailers, good shock, all around good schwinn quality | | Weaknesses: | if there is any, it would be the front derailer, doesn't shift super smooth, oh and the seat is a little tough not horrible though. | | Similar Products Used: | tested specialized and trek | | Bike Setup: | straight from the box to the trail | | Bottom Line: | I absolutely love this bike, it looks great, and rides even better. Its light and fast. I have taken it out and beaten it up, through the mud, over rocks you name it and have not had one problem with it. I did a lot of bike research before making a decision, for the money there is not a better bike. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$900.00 | | Purchased At: | Performance Bike | | Strengths: | The frame looks good and isn't too heavy. Has decent parts spread throughout the bike. It's a tough bike that can take a beating. | | Weaknesses: | I bent both the cassette and two of the chainrings during my first month of riding it. The front der. is a bit stubborn and doesn't always shift. The saddle is uncomfortable. | | Similar Products Used: | Kona Muni Mula, Giant Ranier | | Bike Setup: | Stock w/ Specialized Body Geo MTB Comp Saddle, XT front der and upgraded chainrings | | Bottom Line: | I love this bike. I wanted a tough bike that could take a lot of abuse and support me (I weigh 220). Aside from the all the rings bending, it's held up well. It even fell off of my car on the highway during a rain shower and the only damage it suffered was a bent front der. I would highly recommend this bike to anybody trying to stay under $1000.00. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
