It's a perfect fit for me and came all hooked up (except for a few goodies I added when I needed to replace parts...)

Over the past two seasons, this ride has treated me kindly. I had some problems with the chain/cassette last season which ended in a broken chain causing destruction of my (expensive) XTR rear derailleur, which prompted the upgrade to shimano. Also, while the Judy isn't too heavy and performs alright, there's no adjustments (external rebound adjustment my ass!!) that actually do anything, so I upgraded this week with the much stiffer Manitou Skareb Super with lockout. Along with the brake upgrade, I feel like it's a new bike, except that I don't have to adjust to a new frame.

Cheesy Blue Tomac Barends. They were cheap, and they work... | | Bottom Line: | I've been a fan of the Schwinn Homegrown since it first came out. Being young and unable to afford one, I could only be an outside fan. Found a frame of the 2001 HG Comp at a great price, and built up the XC bike I've always wanted. My reward to myself for 4 years of college and landing a job. While I can't comment on the stock HG Comp setup (components, wheels, etc), I'll make an attempt to comment on the frame itself.
Onto the bike:
As others have said, the bike makes a great platform for building up a great bike. The frame is insanely light and gives a great ride for an aluminum frame. Schwinn really hit it with the N'Lightened alloy in the tubeset. The frame geometry makes for a great XC bike that loves to climb, but can be a bit sketchy at high speeds and on freaky steep descents. Just little quirks that take getting used to as any bike would have.
This bike, even in the bikeshop setup (as I've read) is a completely race-capable bike, that won't leave you broke. There is plenty of room for upgrades from the base Comp bike, which can be made as skill/race class increases.
My only main concern with the frame is the integrated headset setup. It is imperative that it is always, always, maintained at the correct preload, as a loose fork can completely damage the frames head tube and render the frame junk. Also wondering how hard it is going to be to find parts for it when the bearings finally do let go (been fine for 6 months so far, I'm thinking years down the road...).
Other issues with the frame are nits:
-Decals scratch off kinda easy
-Chainstay guard came off on a ride and is lost forever
-Yellow frame shows scratches easily

What a great ride! The bike handles like it is on rails and climbs like a mountain goat. Schwinn's Nlightened aluminum is very light without seeming quite a harsh as some of the other hardtails that I have ridden. The Judy Race fork up front gives plenty of travel for an XC bike and has gotten me through a number of technical, rocky downhill sections (good for lighter weight riders). The components are great - especially the XTR derailuer in the back. And, hey, let's just admit it - the bright yellow paint job with the red front fork just looks damn good!
The Bad:
The fizik saddle is just about the most uncomfortable saddle I have ever put my ass on - gone.
The wheels just don't go along with the rest of the package - gone.
The Titec Riser Bar is way too w i d e - cut.
I am little concerned about the integrated headset that Schwinn used on the Homegrown sicne they are out of business but I guess I'll worry about finding replacement parts when the time comes!
The bottom line is you just cannot buy a bike of this quality for this price. Unfortunately this was a close out after Schwinn went bankrupt and was bought out by Pacifica. Don't expect to see bikes of this quality coming out with the Schwinn brand again. Too bad. | Value Rating:Overall Rating: |

I've never had a problem with Shimano hubs until now. The DEORE hubs didn't spin smoothly from day one. I'm pretty much expecting these hubs to blow out within the next year. I've raced using some pretty nice equipment. Now that I'm buying my own gear, I need to be thrifty. This bike isn't going to break the bank and I was quite surprised at the performance that you can get from a sub-$1000 bike. It's just as light as most $3000 rigs and the shifting is great. I didn't think I would like anything less than XTR, but I was wrong (except the hubs of course).
Now, a comment on the suspension fork. Rock Shox has made a nice multiple riding style fork with the JUDY RACE. It's light enough for most people (you don't have to worry as much about blowing seals like on the SID's ) and it gets up to 100 mm (that's 4 inches!) of travel. You shouldn't need more than that because this is a hardtail and shouldn't be doing any crazy downhill stuff anyway. Regardless of travel, this fork feels nice without having to play too much with the preload or the firmness settings. It does make a squeeking noise at the beginning few minutes of each ride which I haven't figured out yet. This is also the first fork I've ridden that didn't have mud boots. Supposedly, it doesn't need them because it's got a bunch of internal seals. We'll see.
Bottom line - This bike isn't perfect but it's the best bike for under $1000 by a long shot. | | Value Rating:Overall Rating: |

XTR rear DR is unbeatable; essentially not found on rides in this price range. Time Atac-Alium pedals come stock. Despite what others say, I've come to like the Micheline Wildgripper tires, but they aren't for all conditions. The LX crank, if not super stiff, is at least light and is a fair performer overall. I actually think that as a cost saving measure, the LX shifters and front DR is a good idea, since they are lighter than the XT's and perform almost as well. The Judy SL is a great fork for the cash, light and adjustable, and looks super sharp to boot! I never thought of myself as someone who would consider the appearance of a bike, but this bike is a sexy XC racer and it knows it. It's the first bike that I've felt obligated to clean after every ride. Who wouldn't want their yellow 'n red schwinn to shine like new? | | Weaknesses: | Despite the smart cost savings, the LX components leave much to be desired, and beg for an upgrade. Speaking of which, Deore hubs?! WTF? This bike is a step up from that bike in weight and componants and they loved the Moab 1. | | Bike Setup: | Stock except for Raceface flat bar, Thompson stem, and Sella Flight Max saddle. | | Bottom Line: | Once I swapped out the stem and bar for something else, all was good. That was just a fit and preference thing specific for me. This a great bike. If you're looking to spend $1300 on a hard tail, then this is THE bike. Date Reviewed: June 15, 2001 | | Favorite Trail: | Seven Springs, PA | | Duration Product Used: | 6 months | | Strengths: | A stiff frame, along with great geo. makes it a great handling bike. Components package is nice, yet stretched out along the gauntlet of Shimano; Deore, LX, XT, XTR. Rockshox Judy Race is super smooth, and works well with the medium-sized (17") frame. Avid brakes, no need to say any more.
| | Weaknesses: | Bike came setup with LX cranks and Deore hubs... a package with a Judy Race could have been setup with nicer hubs and maybe an XT crankset. The stock grips fell apart after a few rides. Wilgrippers aren't the greatest. | | Similar Products Used: | Litespeed, Schwinn Homegrown '97 (frame built with Judy SL, XT, XTR), Giant XTC disc '00, Performance TOPO frame. | | Bike Setup: | Out of the box I changed out the LX crankset with and XT, switched to a Performance Forte Pro SL (selle italia) saddle, exchange Time ATAC aluminum pedals for 858's, and put my famed "Pimp France" sticker (made from 2 Performance stikers) on the top tube. Vredestein Slizer/Grinder tires. Extras: Sigma Sport computers, Cane Creek ends, L20 tubes.
