Favorite Trail:New River Trail
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $300.00
Purchased At:Cardinal Bikes
Strengths:If you read the reviews you will see that I reviewed this product just after I purchased it in August of 2000. It is now 7 years later and I still own and ride the same bike. The bike has operated great for the past 7 years and I have NO complaints. It looks and operates as good today as it did when I originally reviewed it. This bike has not even needed a tune up. Im not near ready for newer bike. Thanks Schwinn!
Weaknesses:None...........Oh I guess it could be lighter.
Bottom Line:The review speaks for itself.

Favorite Trail:Poplur Tent
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $300.00
Purchased At:Lake Norman Bicyles
Strengths:Strong frame but HEAVY!!!!!!good tires,okay rims
Weaknesses:fork SUCKS!!!! the fork doesn't work worth a crap, the cassest doesn't have enough gears, the pedals are crap,(i upgraded to welgo clipless)the gears don't work at all after the first month,& the derailer
Similar Products Used:first mountain bike that wasn't from target
Bike Setup:riser bars, added clipless pedals, and added new grip shifts(the kind that clicks each time you move it so your chain won't rub up against the front derailer)
Bottom Line:the bike sucks if you want to do hard core riding, but if you just like to ride around the neiborhood its fine

Date Reviewed: April 6, 2001
Favorite Trail:McNeely Lake Louisville KY
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $350.00
Purchased At:Bobby Terrell's Cycle
Strengths:cost
smooth ride for the money
tough frame
Weaknesses:RST shocks
grip shifters
riser bar
pedals
weight
Similar Products Used:Specialized HardRocker
Bike Setup:I switched the riser bar to a flat Kore stem. I replaced the factory tires with lighter Specialized ones. I put rapid fire shifters on the bike. I replaced the front shocks with Rock Shox Judys. I put some 515 pedals on.
Bottom Line:This was my first real mountain bike. The frame is just a good old fashioned steel frame, and the Shimano parts are fine. The upgrades I made really improved this bikes performance. I have since upgraded to a Moab 1. My girlfriend rides the Frontier now. There is no real comparison between the two bikes, but I could buy 3 Frontiers for what I paid for the Moab. The Frontier is a great beginners bike. If you think you might enjoy mountain biking but you do not want to spend a fortune to find out; start with this bike. It is an excellent value.

Submitted by John Ross a from Dallas, TX, USA
Date Reviewed: December 20, 2000
Favorite Trail:White Rock
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $290.00
Purchased At:Richardson Bike Mart
Strengths:confident shifting thanks to a decent Shimano derailleur,
good brakes,
not too aggressive frame geometry makes for a fun ride,
excellent fit and finish: the Toyota corolla of entry level bikes
Weaknesses:gripshift is better suited for a hybrid bike on paved trails,
I can see replacing the front fork after several months of hard use

Similar Products Used:Specialized Hardrock, various Trek and Raleigh
Bike Setup:Stock; just added clips, cage and saddle pack
Bottom Line:To say it's a good bike for a great price is an understatement. The Schwinn Frontier fs is a great choice for inexpensive transportation to campus, work or exploring a local trail. In the sub $300 range, no one can touch this bike for features and quality

Submitted by Daniel McMahon a Downhiller from Sydney, ns, Canada
Date Reviewed: November 1, 2000
Favorite Trail:Powerlines
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $350.00
Purchased At:the bike shop
Strengths:-frame structure
-tires
-stainless steel spokes
-spungy seat
-great cable runs
-not too hard of a back end
-decent suspension
Weaknesses:-heavy
-gripshift(i upgraded to shimano rapid fire)
-pedals(i upgraded to clipless)
-riserbar (i put in a rocky mountain flatbar)
Bike Setup:i put in a rocky mountain flatbar, upgraded to clipless pedals, and i upgraded to shimano rapid fire
Bottom Line:I think this is a great bike for beginners, ect. This bike come with a lot of crapy features such as gripshift. Most of the stuff on my bike is upgraded. If I were you I'd probably go for a Schwinn Mesa or Moab (spend the extra money)The fork is a decent but after using it for a while the springs start to losen up, toooo much! If your going to be riding it a lot downhill like me get a better fork or even a better bike.

P.S. mountain bikin rules

Submitted by Kelly Williams a Weekend Warrior from Draper, Virginia. USA
Date Reviewed: August 5, 2000
Favorite Trail:New River Trail
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:Excellent breaking. Great tires, Stainless steel spokes, smooth shifting.
Weaknesses:None that I know of!
Similar Products Used:Iron Horse Flagstaff
GT Timberline
Bike Setup:Stock. Seat post upgraded to suspension post.
Bottom Line:I purchased this bike a short while back. In my opinion it is a fantastic all around bike for the money. I test drove at least 7 bikes (under $400.00) before deciding on the Schwinn Frontier FS. Im not a serious rider, but enjoy casual trail and road trips. I think it is a fantastic buy for anyone interested in enjoying biking without spending a fortune. I have added seveal accessories to my Frontier such as a computerized speedometer, suspension seat post, lighting, etc. If you are looking for a great casual bike, this should suit your needs fine.

Submitted by Matt a Weekend Warrior from Overland Park, Kansas, USA
Date Reviewed: July 3, 2000
Favorite Trail:Minor Park
Duration Product Used:6 months
Strengths:-Decent Fork
-Decent traction tires
-Upright positioning, for around town
-Cushy Seat
-Failry crisp shifting, I think...
-Riser bars
Weaknesses:-Upright positioning, BAD for races! UCK!
-Fork turns to OAK in winter
-Tires suck in mud, and mud only
-Brake pads dont last very long?
-Grip Shift-style shifters.. Shimano's Rapidfire prevail
Similar Products Used:Giant Yukon
Bike Setup:completely stock, except for grips
Bottom Line:Decent all around bike. For a beginner, it's probably very nice. Lasts a long time, and it pulls wheelie's )@)*#)@ing good! hehehe, maybe it's just because of the high CG. I dunno. Give it a try, you'll more than likely like it. If your looking for a DURABLE trail bike.. this isn't it though. Personally, I'd just save up your money and go with the Moab or something, but that's just me..
