Strengths:
Stron frame, I have taken it through some extreme rocky trails. Came with a few good components.
Weaknesses:
Bad Rims, bad tires, not to good of a crank set, and not the greatest fork, ended up replacing all these components.
Bottom Line:
Strong Frame, just needs upgraded components, as in better rims/tires, stronger crank set and a fork with more front suspension. Then you got your self a good mountain bike for Cross-Country biking. The overall cost will be about $1500.00 to make it a much better bike

Strengths:
This bike does an efficient job out on the trail and has yet to really let me down. It climbs hills well and is able to stay relavtively stable on the downhills. Despite the hardtail design the tail is quite stable on rocky terrain. This bike feels very stable underneath the rider and never feels unbalanced.
Weaknesses:
As a mechanic I'm able to keep the bike in good running shape so things like derailers and such aren't that big of an issue to me as I have mine finely tuned and adjusted. The biggest complaint I have is the bikes handling in muddy corners. With a 2.1 tire and running a lower air pressure of about 30-35 psi would leave you running smoothly on any other bike the Moab 3 tends to swim in mucky corners and the tail end seems to kick out sideways when trying to corner a turn in these conditions. Coming down wet hills such as ski slopes can leave the bike in a particularly difficult situation and sometimes out of control. Front shock is also a little soft and will bottom out in some situations.

Bottom Line:
The 99 Moab 3 is an oustanding bike. It handles incredibly well through tough terrain and is very solidly built. While some complain about the weight I've worked on a ton of products that are quite considerably heavier. For how solidly built the bike is it could easily weigh a couple pounds more. In comparison to the rest of the market it rides much lighter than any comparable hardtail. While the derailers aren't exactly top of the line they do work as well as the Shimano Deore if tuned properly. The saddle isn't the most plush part of the bike, but as a cross country rider you shouldn't need exactly a granny seat. A pair of padded bike shorts easily takes care of the issue. The only thing that I've had to replace on the bike in the last 4 years was a middle crank which bent on me after some tough rock riding. For what you pay for this bike, you easily get a high quality product that competes with anything on the market.

I have ridden this bike for over 3 years with few complaints. The front derailer was junk from day one, I bent the middle chainring just powering through some mud, and the back wheel has had to be straightened out a couple times. But that's what you get at that price. Everything else has held up very well. Still a solid bike, excellent frame for x-country (for a hardtail) and worth upgrading.

Good bike for beginners or casual riders. As a beginner, I rode it MTB singletrack most every weekend for two years. Bike is still in good shape. If you need a 23" frame, the choices are very limited. Whatever size you ride , the frame is really good for the price.

I have raced and gone on week-long treks with with the Moab and have had no major problems with it. This bike has taken tons of abuse and has held up fine. If you want a bike that you can ride hard and not worry about, this bike is for you. If you race regularly and are on a tight budget or if you only ride when you get the chance, i would recommend this bike. 5 flamin' chilis in each category.

Good bike for price, not quite race quality but can handle even the roughest terrain as well as medium drops/jumps. Needs new seat and seatpost to be comfortable for long rides, and clipless pedals to be perfect.
I've never had any problems with the rims, they've worked pretty well, but I am only 160 pounds. Also the v brakes are very good except in rainy wet weather.
The chain smacks around against the frame, makeing a lot of noise on fast rough descents, but it doesn't hurt it. (I don't think anyway)

my first bike, the only one I could find around here my size, though I have looked at a couple of Treks in the same range
Am very happy with it, as a first bike. It takes practically anything I am able to throw at it. Handles well on downhills, and can climb efficiently. Has a great frame and geometry, if you are of a mind to put in more money and upgrade some components. The fork dampens effectively.
The crank complains when you put power on it. The rims are quite flimsy, they got slightly kinked when I tried jumping over a kerb!
I had problems with shifting in the beginning, which disappeared when I adjusted the derailleurs. Rear shifting is perfect, the front protests occasionally in extreme circumstances.
I plan to go clipless, and change the wheels sometime in the near future. Will change the crank when it breaks, I guess!
On the whole, a great bike for the price.

I am a new rider heavily addicted to the sport. I love this bike and ride daily. Will probably upgrade in a year but this meets all my needs starting out as a junkie!
Excellent Geometry is soft for climbings and even better for downhills is maybe one of the most complete bikes in market since that year, is short in the copkit for better climb control and downhill turns, is a good choice if you a bike for yor money. And the color is a candy for the eyes.
Weaknesses:
The only weakness that i discover in this bike was the derailleur geometry, when you go downhill it starts making a inconvenient noise that turn you crazy, but nuts i know that everyone hates uncomfortable sounds, another problem is some of the components that came wiht the bike, when is new are very poor this bike deserve better components....

Bottom Line:
Great bike for weekend warrior or beginner. Didn't know I was going to get hooked on racing, otherwise I would have spent more money. The weight is expected for the money, and the ride from the Judy is worth it. Over 200lbs and the frame took punishment well. I'm upgrading to a Homegrown for next season... this bike needed too much attention when raced, left me without shifting ability and most of the drivetrain needs replacement. The front rim taco'd coming of a jump.. which resulted in 3 weeks off the bike. After replacing the wheels the bike became more stable. Overall this bike isn't meant for racing or extreme conditions, save yourself money by spending more. If you're looking for a great value for a plush weekend trail bike, this is it.

Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:
I think the stock setup in Europe may be different from the North American setup. Rims are Araya (Japan), shocks RST 171, tyres Kenda K6302 knobblies (Taiwan), noname front derailleur, rear Shimano Alivio, front plateau Microdrive SA Powerflow-F (Taiwan), noname pedals to which I added footstraps, brakes Shimano Altus. Stock saddle is the Schwinn Viscount, which I replaced by a BodyGeometry Gel, and covered that with a Geltech cover. Grips are by Gripshift. I added handlebar horns, and the city equipment of mudgards, lock, reflectors, lights, speedo and a klaxon.
Bottom Line:
I like this bike a lot. I use it every day to ride to work, rain or shine, and have enjoyed every minute of it (except today when I crashed it spectacularly on black ice in the middle of an intersection - the bike came through unscathed, while I am more tattered, battered, and sadder than I was at breakfast). That adds up to about 2000 km, and I'm still a great enthusiast. I've not used it much off-road, except last summer in the Alps, when it performed much better than I did. It's a great bike, serving well as a commuter over awful cobbles, tramlines, debris and uneven pavement, and showing its surefooted class whenever I do get it off-road. Who should buy it? Anyone who drives a car to work less than 10km (shame on you) - and more seriously, anyone who wants a good, serviceable bike that won't let them down and is great fun to ride.

Excellent frame (1998), incredibly strong and rigid, but not uncomfortable!!! Has homegrown geometry. Also the frame is incredibly light!!!! Excellent fork even being 2 years old and barely used.
Weaknesses:
The front derailer has been giving me some trouble but adjustments may be able to fix that. Grips are not the best either but can also be upgraded.
Rock Shox Judy XC, Titec Lil' Al stem, Go Fast Risers, XT front and rear derailer, XT integrated shifters and brake levers, XT front and rear hubs, Avid brakes, Mega 9 front crank, Italia Flight saddle, Thomson post. Voodoo Matrix rims, Ritchy Tires (front and back).
Bottom Line:
For a 98 frame, 98 fork, and used riser this is the best bike I have ever ridden. The frame, fork, and risers are all used but in perfect shape (if you don't count minor scratches). Deraliers, brakes, stem, etc are also older but have never been used before I bought the bike. This bike is incredibly light, almost lighter than my friends trek 7000 17 inch bike. The tires are excellent and grip like a baby on its mothers breast. My suggestion to anyone wanting a bike that can ride with the more expensive bikes, get a Moab. Although the newer models don't have that great of parts, upgrade the bike and you will be pleased for a lifetime. It is the most comfortable bike I have ridden or test ridden. I bought this bike for 450 dollars from a person in town that used to own a bike shop so I knew it would have quality parts. The newer moab 3 runs between 600 and 700 dollars and is well worth that amount. Schwinn's comment about the Moab being the best bike you can buy for the money is exactly right and then some!

Excellent Entry Bike for the price! The RS Judy C, Avid Brakes, Shimano Shifters and Transmissin are GREAT! Very, very stable (no vibes), good geometry and nice paint job.
Weaknesses:
Front Derailleur needed some tweeking, but OK. Rims are a little soft for HardCore riding, but OK. Kinda heavy, but very sturdy. Nothing that stands out thought as BAD!
No upgrade yet; but Shimano XT F/R derail, then XT crankset, maybe clipless and SID if I get a ton of extra $$$. No reason for serious upgrade yet.
Bottom Line:
I am so pleased with this bike. I have ridden other bikes and they do not have the overall positive feel and sturdyness that 100 years of Schwinn technology gets you. I get the most out of it every time I ride and have not been disappointed yet. Everything from light XC to downhill and the bike is sound. I have bent the middle chain ring once, fixed by the shop and the rims always need tuning, but it comes with the terrain. I would recommend this bike to any entry to intermediate rider. All the bang for not a lot of buck. You will not be disappointed with the Schwinn Moad series!!!

I do however suggest upgrading the derailleurs and crankset as they wear out. Also the tires have a wire bead which adds weight, a kevlar tire would be a better choice. Great bike!

If you had an extra $400 sitting around, upgrade the deraileurs and get new pedals. And get a suspension seatpost- the bike needs some rear cushioning. When I was shopping for bikes I'm sure I tried out dozens of bikes from $500 to $2500. The Moab 3 felt the best and fit me well. Once I took it out on the trails I knew I made the right choice. The bike is reponsive and excellent for hill climbing. The Judy fork is perfect for the conditions in which I ride. The only problem I had was the rear derailleur. The first hard ride I blew it out and I have since upgraded to an LX with intentions of going full XT front to back. The crank hasn't caused me any problems I just hate the way it looks. The frame is sturdy and looks awesome. I also changed out the pedals to clipless and what a difference that made. Anyone thinking about it DO IT! Lastly, I could not find another bike with its quality in the same price range. Any bike with a Judy fork or better came with a higher price (but better components). However, the components on the Moab 3 are not shabby and are easily upgraded. An extra 40$ for LX or 70$ to goto an XT rear derailleur is no big deal and you still save a bunch compared to similar setups. Aditional upgrades can come later as things break but I doubt they will. Overall this bike is perfect for anyone and can easily be upgraded as the rider advances. I believe this bike could easily compete with bikes worth 3 times as much with upgrades. I chose to by a bike that was relatively cheap that could be upgraded into something awesome overtime so I didn't have to empty my bank account all at once. I recommend buying the Moab3 (or 1 since the frame is the same with better components) and upgrade what you fell needs to be. I laugh as guys who have $2000 and up bikes and ride them to work every day and never see a trail. And I see a lot! It must be nice to waste your money on something that you'll never use properly. I love it even more when I'm out on a trail and fly by someone with a $2000+ bike broken down and unable to fix it - GRANOLA! Again buy this bike!

I have '98 Moab and I have had no problems. With a few upgrades to LX or XT components, it can be an exceptional bike. Already has good frame and suspension.

Great bike. The shifters work with only a 1/2 crank. $1000 bike for $750. The tubes popped fairly easily but that's OK since the rest of the bike is great. The shock takes whatever I give to it. Easily customizable. Nice gear selection. All around good bike. 5 flamers.

The moab 3 is a great bike. I have never seen such a crappy tube in my life. It popped on a curb about 10 Don't get me wrong. I can handle replacing a tube or two because schwinn has given me a bike worth $1,000 for $650. I'll take the trade.

I've been on the trails for less than a year, and the Moab 3 is my first true mountain bike. It feels so much lighter and quicker that I sometimes feel like I'm on a toy, however is has held up to any punishment, including a couple of unscheduled dismounts, that I have thrown at it. I also ride a '78 BMW R100/7 with a front disc break, so when I read in another review that someone had gone over the handlebars due to the Vee-Brake stopping power, I kind of scratched my head. The brakes feel a little squishy to me when I'm going down a real hairy downhill up in the bluffs. I kind of wish I would have gone with the Moab 2 just for the rear disc mount. Oh well, I guess that will be next year's bike. To be honest I'm very happy with my bike. Yesterday morning I put a set of clipless pedals on it and rode about thirty miles both on and off road, and I loved every minute of it. 'Nuff said.

This is a great bike and the best value out there for $600.00. It is my first real moutain bike (I have been riding a 6 year old rigid Mongoose). After researching bikes for over a month I settled on the moab 3. The frame is on par with bikes twice the price, the Judy Rock Shox's are very smoothe, and is easy to upgrade when things break. I have already upgraged the rims to Sun18's with awesome XT Hubs and plan on full XT eventually. I am very happy with my purchase. Unfortunately, I saw a Moab 1 (1998) going for $665.00 a few days after my purchase. Schwinn is making good value products these days.

This is my first bike in 6 years. When shopping I rode over 9 different bikes. The moab 3 was the last bike I rode. The frame is one of the best on the market, for the MONEY!! And with easy up grades, would rival any $1000+ bike. I am so happy with my purchase. Schwinn got my vote.

I bought my Moab 3 about 6 months ago and it is my second mountain bike. Since the purchase I have ridden it on the trails of Sedona AZ, Lawrence KS, and many trails around my home town of Kansas City. The bike has taken everything that I have thrown at it and the only problem I have had is a bent brake lever from one of my frequent trips over the handle bars. I am 6 feet 5 inches tall and weigh more then 220 lbs so I demand a lot from a bike. This is an excellent bike that I would recommend to anyone. For $650 you will not find a better bike.

I bought the 98 Schwinn Moab 3 about 8 months ago and i love it. I rode almost everyday over the summer and the bike was great.I ended up replacing parts because stuff started braking, but i did ride 6 days a week all summer long. I went with full XT parts, race face cranks and rings, frog pedals, WTB kevlar saddle, and Chris King hubs on 517 wheels.even before all the upgrades i was impressed with what Schwinn had done. the frame delivers with every push and it corners and climbs like a dream. now that i have made improvments it is about the best bike i have ridden. the bike is a really good buy, and is very upgradable.do yourself a favor and buy this bike. as things break upgrade them and ride till you can ride no more.

I bought a 98 Moab 3 Al. in April. The bike has held up well considering the fact that I ride almost every day and when I go trail riding I tend to fall quite a bit. When I'm on the bike it feels solid and I have faith in it. The wheels do tend to go out of true after a shorter distance than I would like but it's not a real big problem. The tubes that Schwinn put in the bike were pieces of crap. They flatted at least 5 times in only 3 weeks but I replaced them with standard Scwhinn ones (I think that they had Kenda tubes in it) and problem solved! I haven't had the need to buy any replacement parts but I did buy a pair of Shimano 636 DX pedals as a performance upgrade and the fact that the toe clips on the standard pedals came off and broke (fixable but not worth it). All in all, a great bike for any level. I can't wait to slap on my new X-Vert and do some riding, cold riding, but still riding

Bottom Line:
I bought my first mountain bike almost 15 years ago, which probably means I was mountain biking before most people reading this knew what the sport was. I certainly don't profess to be an expert on the sport, I just love riding bikes. The one thing I can say is that this bike is an exceptional bike. Let's face it, any bike is the manufacturer's frame with their selection of components. Schwinn has done a great job of putting together this bike for the money. The Judy fork does a great job of smoothing out the ride and the drive train shifts smoothly and effortlessly with the rapid-fire shifters. Aesthetically, the bike is in a class by itself. I have the blue and white version of this bike and I have had numerous people comment on it based purely on its appearance. The power transfer to the bike is outstanding. When I punch it, the bike really jumps. I was very surprised at the responsiveness of the bike. Although it did take a little while to get used to the V-brakes, along with 1 trip over the handlebars, they provide smooth, even stopping power. I didn't care for the grips so I changed to something more to my preference. The seat took a little getting used to and I'm still not sure I'm going to stay with it. However, these are just adding my personal tastes.I spent a lot of time researching and test riding many bikes by many manufacturers before settling on the MOAB 3. I am convinced you will not find a better overall bike for the money. My hat goes off to Schwinn.

Bottom Line:
The Schwinn Moab 3 is a solid performer. The component selection is good for a bike of this price range. A Rock Shox Judy on a $650 bike usually means compromises elsewhere, considering that most bikes in this range spec a Jett, but none are found. The shifting had a cheap feel, but then again, my regular bike uses a full XT drivetrain, I guess I'm spoiled. The parts are good, workable, and reliable. The frame rode like it was more expensive, almost as well as bikes costing twice, and maybe three times more. Pedaling input was translated into forward motion. Cornering was sharp, secure, and predictable. This bike would make an excellent woods bike. With a few judicious parts changes, light kevlar tires, light inner tubes, and your favorite bar/stem combo, this bike can become a total animal.Schwinn has done a great job on their bikes.

This is a great bike. The front suspension is pretty good (JUDY C 99). The rest of the components are average. I'm changing them all out to XT later on. The paint job on this bike rocks! I don't like the red lining on the tires though. Overall this is an excellent choice for a bike under $1000.

Bottom Line:
This bike is the best in it's price range, and can compete with bikes costing $1000+. The new Judy fork is amazing but a little heavy, but who cares? If you're concerned about weight, go on a diet and lose 5 pounds. If you like to go fast, and climb, the longer top tube is great. The main concept of this bike is its capacity to upgrade when needed. It's hung with basic race level components, but when they break, hook it up with XT. One complaint, the weinmann zac19 rims suck crap! I bent the rear wheel a good inch and a half out of true TWICE within 15 days! i e-mailed Schwinn, but they ingnored me. When I took it up with the bike shop, they got me a free wheel out of Schwinn. i expected another Weinmann, but Schwinn sent me a wheel with a MAVIC X221 rim, and STX/RC hub! Great customer service. BTW, Mountain Bike Action (Oct. 98) and Mountain Biking (Nov. 98) both reviewed the bike, and both magazines loved it.
