Favorite Trail:Mule Shoe Bend
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $600.00
Purchased At:Wheeler's of Shawnee, KS 66216
Strengths:Good looks, tuff alum frame, great bike for the buck. This is a bike that can be upgraded as the parts wear out, and still feel like you have a good bike in between.
Weaknesses:The moab trail xc tires are terrrible in dry, hardpack, and sandy gravel.
Chucked the stock cage pedals.
LX cranks are stinkers. I'm 190lbs and can flex the chain rings to either side of the front derailer. That's a lot of flex.
The spokes need to be tensioned,so fix'm b/4 you bend your rim.
Similar Products Used:Last bike was a 1989 fuji thrill. No comparisons to make.
Bike Setup:Swaped stock parts for, Titec Hellbent layback post, Kore Strictly D 3" riser bars, and I ride both Richie clipless pedals and some BMX Sharkbites depending on my mood. Not yet on the bike are Profile Racing 190mm cranks.
Bottom Line:This bike rocks for the price, and the 2001's have even better parts.

Strengths:Frame, strong and flickable.
Climbing and decending.
Weaknesses:Wheelset. Standard issue headset-snapped bearing races in mine.
Bike Setup:Moab 2, Marzocchi Z3 Bomber forks, DMR V8 pedals, LX, Avid arch rivals 1.0
Bottom Line:Great bike, great price!! Makes short work of steep climbs and responsive on downhill sections.
Frame strong enough for drop-offs etc.
Judy C's that came with bike were decent, but felt like pogo sticks compared to Z3 Bombers.
Not many in Aberdeen!!

Favorite Trail:Anything in Moab!
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $440.00
Purchased At:Bennett's Cycle of MN
Strengths:Excellent components package, especially for the price I paid. Lightweight, strong reliable Schwinn frame. Climbs and descends like no other hardtail (except possibly Homegrowns), rattle free on drops. I'm a small rider but the Moab is light enough to get some serious air. Way too much fun to play with (400 miles in first month alone!), it just plain rocks! LX drivetrain is an excellent value and performs just fine for my needs.
Weaknesses:Poor cables, stock Avid brakes a bit weak, SDG saddle ripped quickly.
Similar Products Used:Schwinn Homegrown, Specialized Rockhopper/Stumpjumper, GT Ricochet/Avalanche, Gary Fisher Tassajara/Big Sur (Just about all the upper end hardtails)
Bike Setup:Stock LX drivetrain w/ XT rear der. added, Judy XC fork, Avid 2.0 brakes and 1.9 levers, Michelin/Mavic wheels, Titec Bar/Stem/Seatpost
Bottom Line:Heck, for $440 bucks I couldn't turn down this deal, make note that I added about $150 worth of new components after the old ones wore out or broke. Caouldn't have asked for anytthing more except maybe a Homegrown but they weren't 50% off. For a reliable, relatively economic, well equipped hardtail, there's nothing like the Moab, either the trail or the bike!

Purchased At:Williamson Bicycle Works
Strengths:Walks the walk and talks the talk for less than $750. Strong frame. Two-tone retro-paint (Cream/Black). Not a harsh Al bike. Judy has a nice ride for a cheap fork. Schwinn heritage. Don't have to worry about wrecking a $2000 bike.
Weaknesses:Heavy, cheap LP27 BB. I hate it when manufacturers put crap BB's on bikes just because you can't see it! Lower-end Judy weighs more than the frame itself. Can't get things done around the house when I'm out on the bike for hours.
Similar Products Used:Trek 800 ($20 commuting bike), GT Tequesta (The bike that got me into this crazy sport!). Various other hardtails and FS bikes when test-riding.
Bike Setup:'99 19"/'01 Marzocchi Z.4/Cane Creek S-5/Titec Hellbent XC/Hutchinson Python tires/Thomson seatpost & stem/Oury grips/XT hubs; 14/15 DT DB spokes; Sun Rhino Lite rims/Kool-Stop/Truvativ Stylo Team crank; SL BB.
Bottom Line:This is a follow-up to my 4/9/00 review. I have been bitten by the biking bug and have enjoyed the Moab.

I am a card-carrying clydesdale so I upgraded the bike for heavy-duty use. I've trimmed weight where I could (seatpost, stem, fork, tires) and added weight where it was needed for my size(rims, bar). The frame is a great platform to build off the already great components.
Upgrading the fork took 1/2 lb. off the front of the bike--made a difference in climbing ability. If I weren't a big guy, an SID would shave another 1/2 lb. The crank/BB upgrade was another 1/2 lb. Little tweaks here and there make this a durable, relatively lightweight(~24 lbs) hardtail for the bigger guys. I'm not a weight-weenie, but 2+ lbs. off the weight of the bike makes a difference when I'm chugging up hills. I wouldn't hesitate to buy this bike again; or another one from Schwinn 'cause it seems they have their act together once again.

Price Paid: $700.00
Purchased At:KSH
Strengths:Affordable. Well capable going off-road. Ideal for those new to the sport.
Weaknesses:Heavy. Sluggish, especially in technical singletrack.
Similar Products Used:GT Ricochet, Specialized S-Works M4
Bike Setup:Stock except for the Easton CT2 seatpost, Selle Italia Flite Ti saddle, Time pedals, Titec Big Al stem and IRC Mythos XC tires.
Bottom Line:This is a great bike to start the sport with. It's a little heavy (27lbs with the above setup) but well capable going off-road.
Though the bike is a stable descender (perhaps due to its weight), it's a bit of a torture to ride up long or steep uphills.
The Moab 2 is a little sluggish in the handling department and so does not fare too well on technical trails. And given its rather slack geometry (a 70/72 degree head and seat tube angles as opposed to the more aggresive 71/73 degree setup), the bike rides more like a fast cruiser than a singletrack weapon. Bear this in mind if you are considering making the purchase. Upgrades would make it lighter. But whether it's money well spent is another question.

Strengths:Good Price, good component mix, good performance.
Weaknesses:wheels
Similar Products Used:Giant, Trek, Cannondale
Bike Setup:Stock with the exception of better clipless pedals. (Rockwerks)
Bottom Line:For the price, you can't beat it. I know that you've heard it before-- the price is good-- but this is a true mountain bike. Not the Wal-Mart Special, or a cheapie. This is the real deal. You can do anything you want on this bike. Long ride; technical; get lost in the woods, and not care; it's all good. If you can dish it out, this bike can take it. The only problems that I have had have involved the wheels. I am a big guy, and I have this problem of the spokes breaking when I jump off of stuff. (ie when I go over four feet in the air, something is going to break. . . It won't be the frame.) Also, dog crap has this nasty habit of stickin' to the wheels.

Purchased At:The Bike Shop, Calgary
Strengths:Solid bike, good OEM gruppo, agile, decent climber
Weaknesses:Tires; other reviews say weight, but I haven't noticed a big difference between other bikes; I should take weight off myself before I take weight off the bike :)
Similar Products Used:MT Bikes: Kuwahara Impulse, various Rocky Mountains and Gary Fishers
Road Bikes: DeKerf trialthlon bike, custom-built Bianchi
Bike Setup:OEM, Ritchey pedals, Panaracer Smoke/Dart tires
Bottom Line:This is an excellent bike for the type of riding I do - long, technical mountain trails. It is a decent climber with better tires and I find the weight contributes to stability on the fast downhill sections.

Price Paid: $830.00
Purchased At:Cyclepath
Strengths:Very Strong sturdy frame, good LX component group for the value, good handler at high and low speeds, up hills and down.
Weaknesses:Weight, too heavy
Similar Products Used:New GT ricochet, and Fisher Big Sur
Bike Setup:Stock, except Titec Heat Treated aluminum seatpost (nickel plated) and 90mm Titec welded stem.
Bottom Line:I really like the value... for the price paid you get a lot of bike, and it can sure take a beating. I've had no problems with the drivetrain, forks or frame... I would definately recomend this bike to any intermediate rider. I would however suggest changing the seatpost, it is a cheap no namer... For me I liked the 19 inch frame but I felt I was reaching to far forward, so that's why I got the shorter stem. Overall it's an amazing bike to ride, it handles like a dream, if only it were a few pounds lighter! But even with this extra weight you wouldn't be able to notice it by the way it climbs and sprints.

Purchased At:City Bike Shop, Traverse City, MI
Strengths:Frame geometry, stiffness, comfort, slow and high speed handling (up and downhill), suspension fork, componentry, appearance.
Weaknesses:Weight (which is more than compensated for in ride, I shall not whine), and sticky pedals. Is there a way to file them out or something for easier release?
Similar Products Used:Trek 7000, GT XCR-3000,Fisher Big Sur, Cannondale F-series, Specialized M2,Giant XTC hardtail, etc. (anything between $800 and $1200, except Klein Attitude)It's all opinion at this level.
Bike Setup:21", Red and Silver,Manitou Magnum SX dual adjust fork, Titec XC Hellbent Riser Bar, Belaire SDG Saddle, LX front, XT rear, Deore Hollowtech Cranks, Ritchey SPD clipless pedals,Panaracer Smoke Kevlar XC (Black with Red sidewalls).
Bottom Line:I keep trying to convince myself the bike couldn't possibly handle this well for the price, but I can't seem to do it. Near flawless singletrack hold, tight spot on downspeed handling (yes, I know the difference between snobby critique and experiential evidence), fast cornering on fire roads, nimble air catcher, and retains gymnastic finesse on slow speed play. It's too bad that the American manufacturers can't seem to put up a like ride at the same price point.....I want to be patriotic in my manufacturing selection, but consumer pragmatism keeps slapping me in the face. Get rid of the pedals. I've gone back to cheapie pedals with no clips and have been having great fun. Being that the frame is born of the same geometry as one the best frames on the market, it is tough to go wrong (Homegrown, gotta get me one of those!) Kickin Panaracer Smokes tires hug tight to the offroad loose and aggregate. Ritchey pedals are sticky to get out of, but perform admirably otherwise. Cranks have a nice feel as well. Upgrades would take you to stellar heights. If you value, well, value.....here is your little gem.

Strengths:Perfect as first "real" mtn. bike. Solid package. Great looks. Great ride.
Weaknesses:Heavy fork. Brake pads wear quickly.
Similar Products Used:Test ride only: Trek 6500, 7000, Schwinn Moab 1. Moab 2 feels better and is better value.
Bike Setup:Marzocchi Z.2 SuperFly, U.S.E. Sx post, XT drive train, Easton Monkey Lite carbon bar/ODI Lock On Grips, JagWire cables, Time ATAC Carbon pedals, Conti. Explorer Pro tires, Kool-Stop Thin-Line brake pads.
Bottom Line:Have put over 2000 miles on mine. Still looks new and rides like new (if not better with upgrades). Homegrown geometry makes for great climbing and decending. If purchased as first bike, is solid enough to also be your last. No regrets in choosing the Moab 2 over the Moab 1 (better color, better value).

Bottom Line:good bike for the money for beginners, if you can find it now. buy a new wheelset and tires(put slickys on the stocks and kevvies on the good wheels) and you're set. upgrade the drivetrain in 2-3 years along with the seatpost, saddle, stem, bar, and fork. Or save your money and buy a $2,000+ bike with what you want on it and take the chance you hate mountain biking. Tough choice, I should have gone with the latter. 5 flaming biscuits for value minus 1 flaming dingle-berry for crappy tires and my stupidity.

Bottom Line:This bike is a good introduction MTB. I have ridden over 7000km on the bike and have only had to replace the
low end Mavic rims that came with it (I am heavy 90kilos).
The frame is beautifully crafted and would outlast any

Strengths:like everyone else the, price per quality factor of this bike was the best out there when I purchased it last year. Great component group, the hydrocoil judy has been wonderfull, the paint still looks magnificent, and the frame seems as though it will outlast me...
Weaknesses:Seat post to short, but I have had this problem with every bike I have ever bought. I wasn't real thrilled about the tires, but really good tires must be terrain specific and that means you must get one for where you ride the most. I have had problems getting in the ritchey pedals, I wasn't sure if it was me or not cause I fought switching to clipless till the end!!! I have been considering the 535 dual cage and spd, cause then if I don't get in I still have pedal to push, but Im not real excited about their weight. And since many other people are having trouble with the ritcheys maybe I will just try another brand of spd's.
Similar Products Used:At the time I bought my Moab I test rode most every major brand, There were many good bikes but the Schwinn not only was good but spec'ed the best for the money. Without making a compromise that effected the bikes overall performance like some other brands had obviously done.
Bike Setup:Currently with a shorter 105mm Ritchey stem, Titec riser bar, Rock Shox suspension post, and Geax tires.
Bottom Line:I bought a Scwhinn Rocket 88 about three months ago, and at first the Moab just gathterd dust. Then I decided to start riding to school at night and I got out the Moab and put the shorter stem on it to make it comfy for the street. Then one evening I went for a ride with my roomate and I let him ride the rocket and I took the Moab. I was amazed at how good the Moab felt, I cleaned more things on the Moab than my roomate did on the rocket. To be honest the rocket has made me a better rider, be it cause I ride more now, or cause the suspension has made me a litle braver, I don't know. But it speaks wonders for the Moab that I now am back to riding the hardtail just as much as I do the full boinger. I am probably faster on the rocket, but I seem to have more fun trying technical stuff on the Moab.
Schwinn did a wonderfull job on the Moab 2, I would definitly recomend it on a value versus cost basis, as well just for the overall ride and feel of the bike.

Weaknesses:Have had some problems shifting, handlebars and bar ends stratch really easily.
Similar Products Used:Motiv stonegrinder, schwinn mesa gsx, huffys
Bike Setup:Stock red&cream '99 model
Bottom Line:This is a great bike. For the money (I got my '99 model fo r $600) you really can't beat this bike. The Avid brakes work perfectly, and the stem and handlebars really help this bike to be a great handler on slow singletrack or bolting down fire-roads. There are a few things that I will probably be upgrading, though: The wheels(they get untrued very easily), and the tires(no-name, no-grip), which I'll probably upgrade to Panaracer fire XC's, which are on the '00 model. The 9 speed LX drivetrain has worked pretty good thus far, although once in a while, when im in one of the highest gears and really hammering, the chain will "skip" and quickly start to shift by itself but then go back. This has made me a little paranoid to stand up in the big ring and really open the throttle, due to fear of the pedals suddenly surging forward and causing me to crash(the cause of my last serious crash). But all in all, this bike handles great, is light and responsive, has a beautiful paint job(the black and cream rocks!), and an upgrade of the wheels and tires would definately make this sweet machine race-worthy.

Weaknesses:Seatpost too short for taller riders (I'm 6'2")

Nothing else I've ridden in the past month felt as comfortable and confidence-inspiring as this bike. It climbs and decends well, I guess it's very well balanced. $670 was a little more than I wanted to spend on the bike but couldn't pass up the deal. Strengths:High quality frame construction. Beautiful paint scheme (black and cream). Wonderful ride. Rigid.
Weaknesses:Tires certainly have to be replaced. Wheel upgrade certainly takes off a chunk of weight right where it counts.
Schwinn no longer offers the black and cream paint scheme.

Bottom Line:This is a GREAT bike out of the box for a beginning racer. It provides a stiff ride for "point and shoot" racing. Frame weight is completely acceptable for the weight conscious. Good component mix (nearly complete LX groupo).
My only suggestion for a "must" upgrade would be a new wheelset and tires. The wheels weigh an ungodly amount and the tires can't hold worth anything on any terrain. But, as with any bike in this price range (mine was $649 base) one must expect some corners to be cut. For under a $1000 you should be able to get this bike sub-25lbs. ready to rock! Good job Schwinn! P.S. The Judy C is a little heavy, 4.7 lbs. on a digital lab scale. The Manitou Sxr ... 3.5 lbs. on the same scale (serious weight reduction there!) There is no real discernable performance difference between the two.

Bike Setup:
STock- Judy C, LX everything, Avid 1.0 brakes, new semi-slick tires
Bottom Line:I love this bike. It's a huge upgrade from my old bike, so anything probably would have been nice, but for $699 this thing is unbelievable. My riding skills have improved 500% since I've been on this thing. This bike just breathes confidence, and although I've had some pretty good wipeouts, nothing has broken except the derailleur hanger- cheaper than a new frame. I have a little bit of a hard time getting into the pedals, and I've experienced some chain suck when things get muddy, but other than that it is excellent. I'll probably replace rims, wheels and pedals and upgrade the rear derailler to XTR when I get around to it, but this bike kicks butt straight out off the showroom floor. Besides, the black and cream retro color scheme looks SO MUCH COOLER than all the boring reds and yellows you see out there. Some people may not think Schwinn is cool, but I think they just like wasting their money. I can't wait to get a Rocket 88, but even if I do, I'll never part with the Moab 2.

Bike Setup:
Stock model with pedals changed to Shimano PD-M323's
Bottom Line:I've been shopping around for a high quality mountain bike for about a year now. I looked at the Raleigh M600 and a couple of specialized bikes. The Moab looked to be the best deal though. Great components and a very upgradeable frame.

Bottom Line:Light enough compared to old chromo bike. Was looking for long top tube- this one feels good, although I see from their site that y2000 bikes will have 1 longer top tube and wheelbase. Nice looking nice handling- LIFETIME WARRANTY on this frame (imported- US homegrown frames only 5 years-go figure). 5 of those things!

Strengths:
Great buy for $1500NZ (special price, usually $2000, but good value even for two grand), with full LX including cranks, SPDs(although crap ones)and Judy Cs are a bonus for the $. Climbs well, excellent stability on the down-hills.
Weaknesses:
Ritchey SPDs are not good, by reputation as well as my own experiences with them - not easy out (or in for that matter) for technical sections, and bearings bummed out real quick. I pinched my wife's Wellgos and they are heaps better. Seat post too short for tall riders, but they are cheap - I'm 5 foot 10 and it's at it's max except on the down-hills.
Similar Products Used:
Scott, Avanti hammer, Mongoose NX 8.1
Bottom Line:Great value bike where you don't have to pay mega bucks for the name. Well balanced bike handles well in all situations, especially hills, both up and down. The only problem I've had is a bash ruined the original 9 speed cassette but I think it was a freak accident and is a fault of the general thin-ness of 9 speed sprockets. Buy this bike unless you are a lotto winner and then go buy $6000 worth of light-weight FS.

Strengths:
full lx componant package, as opposed to comparable bikes that fool you with their deraillers and that's it. this bike just feels right and looks even better, it's a nirvana thing. the judy c is the goods although slightly heavy, but not worthy it to upgrade to the xc.
Weaknesses:
slightly heavy, but c'mon you wussies, if you visit the outhouse just before you ride, that'll make up fo it - no big deal. also i'm not 100% on the pedals, hard to get into sometimes, but easy out is a good factor. also, the tires and tubes are butt heavy, change em' with the moola you save.
Similar Products Used:
trek 7000, gary fischer, connondale 600?, marin, kona - they all give you the shaft; good deraillers, crap for everything else - watch out.
Bike Setup:
standard everything, put on a chain slap stopper, and trimmed thee handlebars.
Bottom Line:the bottom line is try the rest, buy the best. schwinn knows what they're doing, this bike is the honest goods in the price range. no tricks and plenty of room for upgrading on a beautiful frame. i think they should change the flamers to dust balls, 'cause that's where this bike leaves all the other comparable ones - five flamin' moe's.

Bottom Line:For the money I don't think there is a better buy. The bike handles perfect and flies down hills thanks to the Judy C Hydra Coil. The all new 9 speed gearing kicks major tail for climbing steep hills. If you want a bike that outperforms it's price this is that bike.

This bike is a great set-up for one who whats tested reliability and performance. Handling is great, minimal personal tweaking. I'm really pleased with the Judy C Long-travel hydra-coil shock... much nicer than my previous experience with elastomers.
Weaknesses:
Front end seems a bit heavy in comparison to the rest of the bike, still adjusting to the bounciness/lightness of back (though I probably shouldn't fault the bike for this!). Feel that the 9-speed is more trend than function

Very resonable price for its value, hardly comparable to other produsts in the category. In Poland at least. Very good, comfortable but stiff frame. Very good front shock and components set - up
Nice painting.
Weaknesses:
Manufacturer (or importer) saved on clipless pedals. I am really not convienced Weinmanns rims.
Similar Products Used:

Strengths:
Does anyone know anything about handling anymore? This bike is a quick handler, great for switchbacks and climbing anything. The back end is really comfortable compared to other aluminum. The Vbrakes do bend the stays a bit, so I worry about longevity. Nice tight frame-slopes good for extreme handling. Design is quite good, for fast riding, slinging through the woods.
Weaknesses:
before mentioned brake flex, not made is USA, but what is,
Similar Products Used:
Trek controlled brands, Specialized
Bottom Line:A good frame. Handles good, balanced, but you can get last year's models cheap. Not the coolest brand name, but this frame is designed and feels better than similar bikes. Forget the parts, concentrate on the handling and feel- this is what all higher end frames are about- parts wear out and can be replaced- this is a nice frame that doesn't shout anything, but handles evenly, good a slow speed.

Bottom Line:

i came on to post a review on this bike and i was dissapointed that there weren't any.i bought this bike 3 months ago and have ridden whenever i've had a chance it rides well and feels great it was different to the one they describe above mine has 9 speed lx stuff with sdg saddle and white bro sc-90 at on the front and it cost me 1900 but it is alot different to the one described above. it is perfect for a weekend warrior like my self and for the price it was well worth it.it came with all good parts it doesn't weigh much so it makes it easy to take from place place this is the perfect bike for a weekend warrior or someone who likes to go camping with there bike but if you buy you should ride it as much as possible to get everything out of the bike and don't worry about working them too hard because there is no limit to how hard you can drive a schwinn...
