Favorite Trail:SlickRock,Moab; Tarzan Falls,Guam
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $400.00
Purchased At:used, from a friend who beats and tortures bikes for fun
Strengths:This bike has durability, and really jumps with acceleration when you pound on the pedals. It's the equivalent to a Porsche 911 in this respect. Sustains crashes and keeps on going even when you can't.
Weaknesses:It doesn't seem to break... ever! Any weaknesses would have to be from the rider, not the bike.
Similar Products Used:Moab 3, Santa Cruz, K2 Evo
Bike Setup:XT components, Avid brakes, Judy XC in front
Bottom Line:This bike is a value bike. It was my first bike after not riding for over 6 years. It's a great bike for beginners to advanced thrashers. I've gone off pretty high drops in this hardtail, and I am pleased with it's strength. This bike has ball$. It's a great value, even in today's models, and because of the serious beatings my bike has endured by both myself and the previous owner, it deserves a 5 star rating. I especially loved taking my Moab 1 to Moab, Utah. It was a blast. Only other bikes I saw there with loving, abusive owners like myself were Santa Cruz's. Seeing other Moab's make me feel like I made a wise purchase, even though the bike was used. It still rides like a charm and I wouldn't sell it. It's a very versatile hardtail.

Strengths:The moab is a great all around bike.I like drop offs and the frame handles most of them solidly. avid brakes wicked good fast wear though I really like the frame really light. really good fit for someone who is tall and skinny like me, (5'8 110 pounds) i race on the junior comp. curcit and for cross country i rely on my moab. if you want to downhill buy a sugar:)
Weaknesses:almost none. Saddle too hard.

Date Reviewed: March 3, 2001
Favorite Trail:Anything at Hardwood
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $1000.00
Purchased At:McBride's Cycle
Strengths:I must say that after one year plus of all round riding this is one great bike for the money. The frame seems to fit me beautifully (I'm 6'1" - 170 lbs). I had to play around with the saddle position a little, but once right riding had been a real pleasure. The single most impressive part of the package is the price. Unlike a lot of racers and real serious people who visit this site, I have a family and cannot responsibly plunk thousands on a bike. At the same time, I love the sport and am out riding just about every chance I get. The derailer combo of LX up front and XT in the rear works wonderfully. I never encountered a shifting problem. The Judy XC fork seems to suck up anything I navigate through with little maint. costs. The other parts mix of Titec handle bars, LX hollowtech crank, and avid brakes show the value in the product.
Weaknesses:I have two main beefs with the Moab 1.
1) The wheelsets and tires are surely not the greatest. While the Tioga Factory XC tires seem to be well received by others, they really seem to suck in any kind of wet/muddy/sloppy conditions as far as I am concerned (I think the Panaracer Fire XC Pros are the way to go). The Mavic rims seem to come out of true far too often and the hubs shimano/formula are somewhat low-end compared to the competition (I will be changing the wheelsets this season.
2) The Avid 1.0 brakes have incredible stopping power but at the expense of quick pad wear. Last fall I bough a set of Avid Arch Rival 50's and Speed-Dial 7 levers off of Pricepoint.com and all I can say is WOW!! They can clamp you to an instant stop or feather you to death.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Rockhopper A1, Stumpjumper Pro, GT Avalanch
Bike Setup:Pretty well stock, with the addition of a Rock Shox Post, Avid Arch Rival 50's w/ Speed Dial 7 levers, Serfas saddle, Panaracer Fire XC Pro (2.1) tires and WTB Speed XC Hubs on Speedmaster rims
Bottom Line:Schwinn really did a nice job here. Just a fantastic Aluminum frame that pushes you into a very aggressive and agile mode mixed with a very nice and surprisingly high-end parts mix. Sure I love to slobber over the Santa Cruz's and Sugar 1's of the world, but unless you are a real avid and serious racer, got some real generous gift-giving parents, or just loaded, I am not sure you really get that much more bang for all the extra bucks involved. If you are a serious weekend warrior such as me, then this sure is a fantastic starting point (just be prepared to spend a couple extra dollars to upgrade the parts where Schwinn really crapped out).

Favorite Trail:every single rocky one
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $800.00
Purchased At:supergo, ca
Strengths:great strong frame, beautiful welding ,makes you feel very safe and at the same time gives you the feeling that you can do ANYTHING on that bike and it's not gonna let you down. The Judy XC is very good/i haven't really needed to adjust the fork in any way and it's been working godamn awesome, even though I might wanta change the soft spring for the medium one. I like the titec bar-ok, it's very long like you guys say, but it gives you much more maneuverability on a trail if you need it ( even 80°-angle turns if you go real slow ) and I DO use it, really.
Weaknesses:the piece of c..p mavic rims became crooked after a few rough terrain downhill sections. I had to change the rims for better ones(much cheaper ones too), 36-spokes ones( not mavic ) with the cups in it. They've done so much better job than the 221s and I don't have to get them trued every week either! The hub were very bad, especially the one on the front wheel. had to change that one as well. I'm just about to let go the avid 1.0 brakes since after a few endos, the levers got warped and not reliable anymore. The seatpost that came with the MOAB1 was a real garbage, the saddle a bit hard(kept it though). A bit longer top tube, which makes you sit in a bit more bentover position which can be unpleasant for the upgrades when not having the barends, but so much more better for the downhill sections which i enjoy so much!
Similar Products Used:Kona(don't remember-the same level), Marin(??)
Bottom Line:I can recommend this bike to everybody who likes to ride a lot. You'll need to upgrade the MOAB but 200 dollars should make it just OK and than you don't pay that WADS of money to have a homegrown(a bit lighter but not that much to be a such a blast against MOAB, i suppose) and you get the same tuff frame you can do almost anything with. I have been doing some 3 - 4 feet high jumps with it and the frame stayed ok, went 40 milesperhour on a ruff downhill trails and the bike lets you do that without making you feel much scared about falling off,..very very safe feeling the MOAB gives you. I really do like hardtails and think that you can do the same stuff like with full suspension + you can climb up the hill yrself with much more ease. ALl I can say is go for this bike, YOU WILL LOVE TO RIDE IT ,MAN!!!!

Favorite Trail:el prado, chirimoyo
Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:Good maniobrability, superb climbing, vibrant colors. Good componentry but even when the rear XT derailleur shifts well it lacks of chain tension. The stock judy xc does it´s job well but nothing else. Very tough and fast. It´s rare geometry (long top tube, short seat tube) looks cool. In three words, light, tough and fast.
Weaknesses:The hubs are crap, they had to be changed to a ritchey on the rear-end and (in two days)a paradigm on the front. And so the paint quality, its scratches easily, I recommend protecting your frame with lots of cutted tubes in the chain stays. The Lil-al stem could had been the Big-Al (blame schwinn for that one). The brakes are ligth but no so good, I changed them to a pair of Rival ARCH 50. The bottom bracket can´t be worst for a bike like this, you can almost have 200 grams off if you change to a SYNCROS. The Seatpost too short. I came with good tires but I would prefer at least a 2.1" rear one. Avid products are good choice but I say: choose "ultimate" or shimano´s (cheaper). The fork works great for me (136 pounds) but it´s poor adjustability sometimes drive me crazy. I´m looking for a Sid 100.
Similar Products Used:Trek 8000, cannondale F700, GT avalanche and Yeti. trek 800 also.
Bike Setup:Avid Archrival 50, 2.0L levers, Z-pro ritchey rear hub, WTB Paradigm front, and stock.
Bottom Line:I´m absolutely sure that you wont find anything like this for the price (it´s sure better than the K2). I got mine at supergo. The frame dimensions are perfect for race or just fun purposes. If you are picky about geometry, change the fork to one of 70mm or 100mm of travel and ´vuala´, it will fit you just perfect.
The bike performs good and is predictability make one of the better choices in the price range. Don´t think it twice and go for it.

Bottom Line:Back for my month long test report.

Good bike in the mud. Recently rode in the rain here in Northern Calif. Great Climber. Awsome frame. Great control as well. I just recommend it to everyone. Comapring to the Specialized M2 stupmjumper ($1800) , this one is a bank for the buck. Components are better or equal to M2 and $700 less. A lot of bike for the money. Get some spinergy wheels and you will look hot. My next investment will be the wheels. I love the design of the specilized M2 as well.

Strengths:Light, good components, great deal for $
Weaknesses:Hubs are rather cheesy for this range of bike
Bike Setup:Suspension post, Terry seat
Bottom Line:I have ridden this bike constantly for the past three months. I would really like to find something to b*tch about, but...The only thing I would change is to put some real hubs on it, but I'm really stretching to find something to complain about. The simple fact is that you can ride this bike and have a great time.
Bike is best suited for the serious recreational rider that wants a good bike but doesn't want to break the bank in the process. The fact that you get an LX/XT combo, Rockshox Judy XC, and Avid brakes at this price is outstanding. Frame construction is good, with the frame designed to accept disc brakes, so this upgrade is no problem. Great all-around bike.

Date Reviewed: February 15, 2000
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:Amazingly light and responsive frame for the price.
Dress it up or down - cheaper parts turn it into a great tourer, more expensive ones turn it into a rip-roaring trail monster.
Cool retro-type paint job.
It's a Schwinn, dammit!
Weaknesses:It's not a Schwinn Homegrown (those babies are so hot)...
Similar Products Used:Forgot them all after one ride on this.
Bike Setup:It don't matter what you hang off this bike. It rocks!
Bottom Line:I purchased the Moab 1 down-specced with lesser parts after my bike store stripped the frame to put the original components on a Mesa GSX for a slalom racer-boy (don't ask why) and picked up a terrific bargain!

This bike is a dream. It's so easy to push uphill! Every pedal-stroke is efficient, despite some ordinary components (part of the down-spec described above). I've already trashed it several times and it begs for more! If you are contemplating a bike in this price range then look no further. As a building block towards a race bike, the Moab 1 frame is perfect.

Strengths:
Light, good components, excellent colour, excellent Tioga Kevlar tires
Weaknesses:
Titec Stem too long for me, so not enough control, causing me to fall often. Also, Alivio hubs are worthless as it caused my chain suck which in turn damaged my super nice frame. Seat also a bit too hard. Ritchey Clipless pedals are not too good as well.

Bike Setup:

Bottom Line:From the weakness, forced to upgrade. COnsidering swapping the Titec stem to Control Tech Team Issue or something shorter. Hubs must change to stop chain suck, to LX or XT but not sure yet (thinking of Chris Kings $$$$$$). Seat too painful, so changed to Specialized. Not sure what clipless to change to.Overall this bike is excellent. Very light and components match very well. Must give it 4 chillis (minus one for the weaknesses and making me spend more $$$$)

Good Value...there's always something better out there. For the price, you can't complain. So far the bike has held up to 4 or 5 rides a week, all summer long, ridden by a bigger guy, and the only problem I've had is ONE flat. I've spent more time putting myself back together than I've spent fixing my bike.
Weaknesses:
Seat post is too short.
I've already gone through the factory back tire and one pair of brake pads with the Avid brakes. Should've put better brakes and hubs on this model and charged a little more. Why didn't they put the Titec Big Al stem and Titec Hell Bent handlebar on the Moab 1 too, just like it's disc brakin' brother?? That geometry works for bigger-sized riders.
Similar Products Used:
Gary Fisher Big Sur
Bike Setup:
Swapped the Ritchey pedals for Shimanos that have street-shoe pedals, since I had never used clipless before this bike. Suspension Seat post in on the way, and I will soon be upgrading the handlebars, stem, and hubs a$ $oon a$ I have the money. And of course, the computer to log those rides.
Bottom Line:A really great bike. If you have the cash, look at the Moab 1 Disc. The stem/handlebar combo is a little different and may fit bigger people better. As for weight, I don't really care. I weigh 185 lbs, so it's easier to shave a pound off my body than off my bike. My raincoat probably weighs more than the extras I put on the bike. Regardless, I bought a mountain bike to get in shape for ski season, and have now found myself racing in our local Town Challenge Mountain Bike Race Series every other week. A great bike that has made my summers as enjoyable and healthier than my winters. I'm taking it home (to Moab) in October to see how it does!

The Judy XC should be thrashed for a Manitou SX-R (although the XC does feel plush, the SX-R has TPC and is more adjustable), the hubs are cheap. Components choice is really good, reliable so far and a LOT OF FUN TO RIDE. Verdict.....go buy one. I rate 5 flaming roadbikers

Very surprising out of the box performance for a sub $1000- bike. Pros: Boy is it light; terrific frame geometry; responsive, firm ride yet not uncomfortable; nicely matched Judy XC fork; equipped with a great combination of components (with a couple exceptions), gotta love 9 speed. Cons: Schwinn should have left off the bar ends and spent the extra money on some more durable, better quality hubs. Saddle is a little hard for my fanny.

okokok ... so this is my THIRD review of the bike ... very long term review ... I put about 30-40 miles a week on it for entire summer... had it for almost a year now ... this bike still ROCKS!!! ... I'm so sick of those effete full suspension dorks saying full suspension is the best of all worlds ... BS! ... I like to ride up the hills I go down, not take a freaking chairlift ... and I always pass those bozos on the trail anyway ... with computer, pump and empty water bottle (YES a real H20 bottle ... I have the HAWG but I still need more) my CroMo Moab 1 comes in at 24 pounds ... mine's older so I don't have the new Titec stem and Avids, but who cares ... The Scott clipless which caused me to spill initially are second nature now ... I clip in no problem and can get out when the need arises easily ... the trick is WD-40 on the spring mechanism to keep it stiction free, otherwise the resistance builds up and it gets too hard to unclip, don't use white grease or that other goopy stuff cause it turns to glue with all the dirt ... the breaks are grating a bit, but there aren't any gravel bits caught in them, was'up'w'dat? ... fitness level has soared after a summer of riding, so ignore my earlier comment about Granny gear being a bit too high ... trails around here are really rooty and rocky, we have hills but to really get into altitude you need to go to Maine/New Hampshire which I did ... this thing rides like brand new ... carves straight, is agile, doesn't flex, very stable, a little hesitant on REALLY rocky stuff, but htat may be me ... nothing loose, broken or bent after a year of decently hard riding (and I've had my share of bad spills because I'm dumb that way) ... I can't have made a better decision! ... front suspension, light weight, good components and CHEAP!! ... I don't know if you guys saying you paid a $1000 bought the aluminum or not ... I wanted Cro-Mo and paid $700 for mine INCLUDING TAX!!... ok it was on sale, '97 model and I haggle like a Bedouin, but still maybe $750-800, but not $1000 for a cro-mo ... I'm still thinking possibly suspension seatpost, but I want to see the new RockShox seatpost before I decide ... Supergo PostModerne or RockShox ... Also get the Camelbak HAWG and replace the lame bite (dribble) valve with something higher flow ... that hydration system rules also ... last shout out goes to Giro and their helmets, saved me from definite organ donation time ... I have to thank all the posters to this site ... I have made some of the most informed decisions due to you guys and gals ... Thanks again ... buy this bike! ...you won't be sorry!! as much as I like it, I don't believe in perfection but I'm still rounding up from my 4.5 Habaneros
